Friday scent of the day 8/12

Posted by Robin on 12 August 2022 156 Comments

It's Friday, plus World Elephant Day and International Youth Day. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance with a magnolia note, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in Guerlain Cologne du 68, which does list magnolia among its 68 notes. I need to buy a magnolia soliflore one of these days.

Reminder: 8/19 is Coco Chanel’s birthday. We've done two Chanel projects in the past (see 2014 and 2019). If you're up for a third, wear something by Chanel, with double points for wearing No. 19. If you're not up for a third, vote with your fragrance: wear a brand that you think deserves more attention. Suggested by Dawn.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Good morning and TGIF!
Claiming cp points with LV’s Etoile Filante.
Thought I could find magnolia scents easily in my collection but no, and also found out I have more tuberose than I realised.
Tea currently is matchy matchy magnolia oolong.

      TGIF to you happy888cat!

There does seem to be a general dearth of magnolia.

Well school is back in session. It struck me last night I am older than every single parent! I needed a pick me up. I am wearing Dans tes Bras FM that my sister gave me.

That transition can be unsettling. I’m now older than almost all my college students’ parents, and my husband is getting into grandparent territory.

      But you smell wonderful!

I’ve been watching a British tv series recently and thinking of you because of the gilding. It’s called The Great Big Tiny Design Challenge. Every week contestants have to design a room for a dolls house mansion ( nursery, bedroom, entrance etc.) in a different historical style ( Elizabethan, rococo etc.), all on a tiny scale . It’s really interesting in terms of making, and there is sometimes a tiny bit of gilding. It works like the British bake off or sewing bee, in so much that people get voted off etc. Some fantastic real life mansion interiors are shown. You might like it.

I’m in JHaG Magnolia Bliss from a sample. I saved it til Friday because I don’t think I have anything else with magnolia in it. I’m generally not a floral fan.
Cooler here and overcast. I’m meeting a former colleague friend for lunch later. It will be fun to catch up.
I got word from my college daughter last night that my teenage daughter made it safely back to summer camp after 14 days in Canada’s Quetico Provincial Park. I can’t wait to hear all about it! She gets home tomorrow.😍 I’m also very happy to hear she made it safely in and out of the country with her misgendered passport. Whew. Now we need to get that fixed!
    Happy Friday!

Hey, I spritzed some Magnolia Bliss on yesterday at Sephora. I was in Kohl’s with a friend and looking for placemats. Funny how I ended up in the makeup… 🤔 What did you think of it? I thought it was okay. There was an Estée Lauder magnolia something something there, but I wasn’t crazy for how it smelled on a paper blotter.

At first spritz it is very pretty, but then…I’m a few hours in and that JHaG ambroxan at the base is getting to be all I can smell. The only thing from that line that’s worked for me is Musc Invisible. Happy to send it you if you’d like! Just let me know.

“I’m generally not a floral fan” is what I told myself and was shocked to discover that I have more florals than I originally thought.

Glad you daughter made it to Canada and back! For some reason I thought you were able to resolve this … but then again, misgendered seem to be officially acceptable anyway. 🤷🏻‍♀️

And I was shocked to discover I love Carnal Flower, so I never say never anymore.
So I did print off the paperwork for a corrected passport, but you have to mail the incorrect one back while waiting for the corrected one. So I had to decide: gamble on the fact that the corrected passport would be back to her in time, or go with the incorrect one? I chose the latter because you are correct in that the gender on your passport does not have to match the gender on your supporting document. I sent her birth certificate and social security card too, just in case!

Happy Friday everyone! I am a long-term background lurker and trying to join back to the community projects after a long break:)

It is early evening where I live and in the morning I unwrapped my blind-buy bottle of Bvlgari Aqua Divina as it apparently is the only perfume with magnolia note in my collection. It provided a nice background hum for office day, but I really appreciate the scent of my current environment more (picking blackcurrants next to lilies in full bloom).

I know I have a sample of Atelier Cologne Sud Magnolia somewhere but heck if I can find it, so no community points for me in Dior Midnight Poison, which I can hardly believe is 15 years old. It’s very simple (how did it take 3 top perfumers to create a basic rose patchouli?), but I like it a lot.

Surprisingly getting Poll Points in the 2006 Missoni, the five star hot mess. I love it still, and it is very nostalgic to me, but sometimes it does smell like Dial clear soap. I never would have guessed there was magnolia in here.

Hmm..not much of a mag fan. In Marienbad by Prada..it’s sublime..expensive and probably will never own a bottle. Maybe a split eventually who knows lol. For those who like fumes like Lab 18, Ambra di Luna..this scent is for you. Prada was my gateway into amber and powdery scents and happy it was lol.

Is summer near the end? That was fast! More floods this way I guess. Extra humid summer here..at least for the desert.

Commando as I head out to scrub the pergola — we are having guests for drinks later on and now that the heat has broken, it would be lovely to be outdoors. Not sure what I will choose later — no magnolia here, AFAIK. Probably Hiris, which I haven’t worn in a few weeks.

Looking for suggestions from make-up-wearing NSTers: I am looking for a new, light-to-medium coverage, hydrating foundation with a natural or dewy (but not sparkly or oily and definitely NOT MATTE) finish. My skin is dry and I’m in my 50s. I would prefer one without SPF, since I wear high-SPF sunscreen year-round, with and without makeup. Even though The NY Times had an article last week that proclaimed “foundation is dead,” I do not mind a little assistance evening out my skin tone.

I alternate between Chanel Vitalumiere (a lightweight, close-to-sheer liquid foundation) and Dermalogica Sheer Tint (it says it’s a tinted moisturizer, but I use it over my regular moisturizer and it works well as a very sheer evener-outer). Both have low-protection sunscreen, but I wouldn’t think they would clash with the high-protection sunscreen you use. The Chanel’s sunscreen is chemical (octinoxate) and the Dermalogica also includes a physical barrier (zinc oxide added to the octinoxate).

La Mer Soft Fluid Long Wear Foundation with SPF 20 is my foundation of choice. It’s barely there for me. I use the La Mer SPF 50 sunscreen all over my face (including eyelids), then layer a tiny pump of this foundation everywhere on my face except what my bangs cover because why waste it. I then blot lightly with a tissue so nothing transfers to my mask, which I still wear on the train and several blocks past NYPenn.

I’m sure your La Mer person would be happy to give you a sample or two. Some Macys stores have a La Mer counter and a Macys SA once told me that you can return anything you want. I go to Nordstrom have only exchanged one La Mer item, coincidentally a foundation, because the formula ended up separating at first opening.

Good luck and please let us know what you ended up with!

If only I had a La Mer person 🙂 the Sephora on the mall (40 miles away) may carry it, but the last time I was in-store (about a month ago), I was unable to get ANY of the SAs to acknowledge me, let alone help me — and I had gone in precisely for the foundation question. Nearest Nordstrom is five+ hours away (in NYC). I’ll certainly try the LaMer if the opportunity presents itself, though it is priced higher than I generally go for color cosmetics. OTOH, your suggestion that this can be made transfer-resistant is very appealing! Blech to scungu masks.

For super cheap, the Wet and Wild Tinted Hydrator can’t be beat! No SPF, can easily be sheered to a light coverage but building to a medium is no chore. Semi dewy finish, you may wish to powder in your T zone. Really beautiful finish!

For a more expensive one I really like the EL Double Wear Sheer. It does have an SPF of 19, so that my nix it for you if you have sensitivities, but a lovely dry down and finish. Another higher end brand I absolutely love is the Monica Blunder “Blunder Cover.” Can be applied sheer and built to a medium coverage. No SPF, solid coverage, dries down and sets without power to a natural satin finish. It’s available on Amazon, so you have to research colors to get close to your skin color, depth and undertone, but I found my perfect color the very first purchase. It’s one of my favorites! Have fun!

FYI: I’d say I have normal to dry skin, fair, with a lot of redness in my cheeks. Just healing up after I tried an SPF and broke out with deep cystic acne spot in 3 different regions. The blunder cover works well to cover those spots.

I’ve never tried Double Wear — I seem to have an aversion to EL makeup and skincare products (except for More than Mascara!), although I love the fragrances. Maybe worth a sample! I’ll check out W&W, too; have used nail polish and eyeshadow from them but haven’t tried face products.

Nars tinted moisturizer with SPF was my go/to for years, but at some point the color became too yellow for my skin and also started to sit atop my skin like a oily layer. I’ve tried Laura Mercier’s tinted moisturizer several times because so many people love it, but it makes me break out. I think, too, that maybe I want a bit more coverage now. But do you have a tinted moisturizer you like?

I looked but don’t have a perfume I identify as a magnolia scent – though some list that as a note (Jadins de Bagatelle is evocative of the feeling). But I grew up in Georgia. During my high school years, I lived in a house that had magnolia trees in the front yard, the magnolia grandiflora. So many teenage problems can be set aside when in the presence and fragrance of this tree in bloom. SotD is Cynthia Rowley, which has a lemon verbena note, and very much reminds me of those flowers.

Your front garden sounds bliss. Totally agree about the problem solving benefits of flowering trees. And lemon verbena captures that aspect of grandiflora so well.

No clear magnolia perfume at hand, so I’m in Addictive Vibration, from a sample. It’s a bit too “Juicy Fruit gum” for my taste, so I think I’m going to layer something with a little more heft on top of it.

No SOTD now. Had what was supposed to be outpatient surgery on Wednesday but it ended up being so complicated it took three times as long as expected and bought me an overnight admission and I now have a lovely drain dangling out of my abdomen. Ugh! I will say I had some lovely nurses and residents. The surgeon had the typical lightening fast bedside manner of most surgeons: “Abcessed gall bladder, no questions, ok bye!” And zoom, away he goes…🙄

Picking up the doggo from the kennel today, thankful I had the foresight to board her the day before “just in case.” I will cry on her shoulder. As long as I feed her treats she will cuddle till the cows come home.

Thanks! I wasn’t feeling bad at all but kept passing stones that partially or fully obstructed the cystic or common bile duct. Couldn’t have surgery at the time because of Covid and a lap-chole want considered “emergent.” By the time those restrictions were lifted, I was at a very small hospital and didn’t want to have surgery there, for many reasons I won’t go into. No one was more surprised about the actual status of my gallbladder than me and I think the surgeon since my presentation was quite benign. And this is why surgeons are always late. It’s people like me that throw a hitch in the giddy-up. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Happy Friday, everyone!

SOTD: In BBW Marigold & Cane Sugar- sweet, light and floral, very casual and perfect for this hot day. No magnolia in the scent, but I have a magnolia tree next door, which smelled glorious this past spring.

The extreme heat of 100f/38c has now calmed down to a 82F/28c, THANK GOD, so I can get some garden trim & clean up done. And will be planting for fall/winter green crops!

Another gardener grateful for cooler weather. I’ve sowed some buttercrunch lettuce, coriander, beets, turnips and radishes for fall crops. In the past, only turnips have worked where I live, but we shall see. The beets sprouted in just over two days, so here’s hoping. BTW, I don’t much like radishes, but someone gave me the seeds, so I if I pick one in October, I will munch it up in gratitude!

Wearing Dolce Vita which does have magnolia hidden away. I went on a magnolia hunt yesterday and came across a few early blooms in the botanic gardens, a touch of pink against the ash grey branches. Still a bit cold and early. The moon looks big this morning, lighting up the hills.
I mentioned it above but really recommend a British tv series , The great big tiny house challenge. Same formula as the bake off, or sewing bee, but contestants make rooms for a dolls house in various historical styles: regency, Elizabethan, rococo etc. Incredible talent and skill. Also some visits to real historic houses.

This one never grew on me. I find the opening very pleasant, but there is something in the middle notes that puts me off every time and reminds me why I don’t wear it often. I imagined this to be a light citrusy floral fragrance, but at least on my skin, the scent gets too dark, too soon.

A sunny Saturday morning! Yay, I last saw a bit of sun last Sunday morning. It was sunny for a while yesterday, but I was in the office, so it’s not the same.
I’ve got a hair appointment this morning. They come around fast, but I’m determined to continue the battle not to see my grey hair for a few years yet, although it’s hard to avoid seeing the regrowth after a couple of weeks.
I went through the list on Fragrantica and found that I don’t have a single perfume with magnolia notes, not even a sample. I do have Divine from Divine, which is a fabulous floral.

I’m claiming lots of points for today’s cp: SOTD is L’Occitane Magnolia & Mure (lots of yummy blackberry in this one) layered over various magnolia blossom b&b products, a tshirt from a long ago trip to Williamsburg, VA with a lovely magnolia blossom on the front, and on our way to a folkfest this weekend in WI near madtowngirl 👋 we took a long detour down county roads and went thru a tiny town named . . . Magnolia!

The heat wave has broken, yippee! But it still feels plenty warm to me this afternoon. Productive afternoon today; I made a few phone calls that I had been putting off. Have to make a couple more but those can wait until Monday.

SOTD = Atelier Cologne Sud Magnolia, from the sample stash. It turns out that I have 2 samples of this one. The spray sample I got ages ago from Sephora may have turned, since I am smelling a distinct celery note when I first spray it. However, the second sample I have courtesy of Lisa D is just fine.

Watery florals meh but it has magnolia so I am taking credit. At least the bottle is beautiful but of course not as beautiful as Greenie!

For summer Friday, I left work just a little after 2pm and I am off on Monday as well! I went to Saks as I was too lazy to walk over to Bergdorfs. Saks reorganized the beauty floor again … not so radically, just the middle part and it seems like they added more perfumes. Everyone other than Vilhelm was tight-fisted with samples. Vilhelm gave me a sample of London Funk but I haven’t tried it yet. I really wanted to try the 2 new Guerlains but they will not be available until closer to the end of September 😭.
