Thursday scent of the day 8/11

Posted by Robin on 11 August 2022 129 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! Birthdays today: Alex Haley, Steve Wozniak, Inès de La Fressange, Joe Jackson. What fragrance are you wearing?

Today, I'm not really noticing the magnolia in Arielle Shoshana Saturday.

Reminder: on 8/12, wear a fragrance with a magnolia note, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Good morning!
    Sotd is MFK Pluriel.
Yesterday afternoon I was testing out The Body Shop’s Gold Addiction and surprisingly it smelled exactly like the inside of a Lush store! I find that quite amusing.
    Currently drinking Marco Polo tea.

And that is so funny. I forgot about that whole TBS series, had to look it up. For anyone curious:

I’m wearing Herbae, which I found in my box of minis while searching for something else. It is sweeter than I prefer and not really herbal, but it is pretty.

No magnolia here right now — the hand went straight to the tiny bottle of Paracelsus. Mornings yesterday and today have been cool and overcast, with the promise of afternoon sunshine. Yesterday’s morning hours were greyer and its clouds denser; this morning the light is almost silvery through the cloud cover and the air feels dewy. One of my favorite kinds of mornings.

I appreciate that it’s a well done fragrance but for some reason it doesn’t stand out to me personally. I’m not familiar with the line at all but I would be interested in trying others.

I’ll be curious what you think of the ones you sample.

Well, it’s nearly a philosophical question — is any soap “worth” $35? But the 2 I have used have been amazing…first, unused, they scent a space for ages, then when you finally use them, they still smell great.

But the best soap I have ever experienced was a Frederic Malle, a very kind gift. If I was a rich man, I would just buy FM soaps, if they even still make them (I am not sure).

I have yet to try a Hermes soap, one day I will buy one.

Then again, Nesti Dante bars are around $10 each, and they are huge and amazing.

It’s been a busy week for me with my parents visiting and lots of back-to-school preparation for my son. He’ll be attending a new school for the first time since pre-school, and this new school will be 10 times larger than his old one! I guess all the activity is good for keeping me from being anxious for him.

I’m going to wear Serge Lutens l’Eau today, the magnolia note is quite prominent on me.

Wearing a sample of Miller Harris’s Peau Santal. To my nose it is a delicate, transparent sandalwood, that reminds me a lot of Santal 33 minus an trace of pickle (which is very pronounced for me in S33).

For the past 25 years there’s been a tradition of marking the day the magnolia at the university blooms. It’s a bit like the Groundhog Day tradition. Last year the first bud was August 9. It’s been trending towards an earlier date , but it usually falls between the first and the twentieth. I will go and have a look today, just in case, though it’s usually reported in the paper. The tree was planted in 1965.
So cold here, but frosty again. Wearing Ambre Extreme.

    sotd = Vol de Nuit

From an STC sample labelled “vintage edt”

I love it! 🙂 VdN always makes me smile the way so many other lovely florals do. Still feeling Guerlain love today.

It’s been hot here in SoCal. Last night a baby possum dragged itself up on my front lawn. When I went out to look of course it played possum for a few minutes then started blinking at me.

He was panting pretty hard, so I went and got a little dish of water for him. Pretty soon he was up and drinking then scurried away.

If you live in a hot climate with neighborhood wildlife, please think about leaving fresh water out for the birds and furry critters who are feeling parched.

Stay cool a fragrant, perfumed peeps! 🙂

This might be controversial, but I think baby possums are cute. Jealous that you got to see one up close. It was lucky to encounter a kind human.

It’s a favorite since the 70’s! It’s a very well-blended green scent with no bite, very smooth and perfect for any season or occasion. Fabulous is right!

I had a doctor’s appointment this afternoon. Got a couple of tests that were firsts for me including a “step test” (aka a stress test) and an EKG. It was being offered thru Mr. Jalapeno’s employer at no cost, so heck yeah, I’m taking advantage. Going to be 3 or 4 weeks before I get results.

SOTD = Eau de Neroli Dore EdC, sprayed after the appt. I think I have maybe one more wearing in my sample, and then it will be thunked.

I have loved all of the pictures you’ve chosen this week, Robin. And oh, that teapot was to die for, my goodness! I’ve become confused, however, and doing some quick on-line research hasn’t much helped. There are a lot of species of magnolia, but one of the main differences is between the pink kind I was used to as a kid up north, which my. mother called “tulip trees,” and the huge trees down south here, including Texas, with giant shiny green lives and plate-sized white blossoms with a sort of big cone in the center. These latter ones are more profuse in Houston, and bloom much later than the pink ones–May rather than January. The question is, do they smell different? I associate magnolia smells in perfume with kind of sweetish floral scents, whereas actual big white magnolia blossoms have a sort of super-light soft lemony gardenia smell–divine. I have not found THIS magnolia scent in any perfume (yet).
Yesterday I wore Armani Mania, said to have a magnolia note, and it seems to me to have the pink magnolia sweet note. It’s too potent and was still on my t-shirt today. But my bottle is very very old.
And another question, is Grandiflora also a subtype of magnolia?

Irrelevant aside: in my small, 11-unit townhome association, we’ve nearly come to blows about a huge beautiful magnolia that sits near one home but provides shade and privacy to two others. Recently one neighbor became convinced it was sending roots under his foundation, and an arborist said yes and offered a bid to remove it. Another neighbor objected vehemently. Nasty views were exchanged on e-mail. Then one day the first neighbor just went out in a fit of pique and cut off a bunch of branches from the beautiful huge old tree. !! Another neighbor who happens to be the landscape architect for the Menil Museum got their tree expert to come over and look, and he said the magnolia is NOT threatening the first guy’s foundation. Now Neighbor #2 wants to fine Neighbor #1, the angry guy. Moral of the story: do not every buy into a property with an HOA because you will regret it!

I may not exactly know what magnolia smells like. I was surprised at one of the ones that supposedly has magnolia, but what do I know? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I live in a development that has an HOA. I agree if there are only a few dwellings, and 11 is quite small in my opinion, an HOA may do more harm than good. My development has a 140 units and when we did not have a management company, the board did not do a good job; it got much much better with a management company that was put in place 4-5 years ago. They are not perfect but I share my displeasure when warranted.

One problem is that in the past we DID have a management agency, but it came out eventually they were bilking us of a lot of money. Then we got some better residents who were good board members, but at present we have two obnoxious alpha males + me, and I refused to get drawn into The Great Magnolia Debate, with the result that the poor tree got kind of decimated in a fit of ridiculous male anger/power display. No offense to the always nice, not peacocking, male/non-binary members of our lovely NST community!

My HOA is a PITA! It’s a sizable community, with at least 2 dozen buildings. There have been at least 3 property management company changes that I know of. They used to send out newsletters to residents, but that practice stopped several years ago.

Yes, grandiflora is a subset or species of magnolia. But not all big white magnolias are grandifloras — there are several other kinds with those big flowers.

There are no pink grandifloras, but there are obviously pink magnolias, and I think more than one kind although most of them are that tulip shape so get called tulip trees.

But tulip-shaped magnolias can also be white 🙂

That exhausts my plant knowledge. I don’t personally think any of it matters for perfume…they do what they want aesthetically and if it smells like any magnolia at all, it’s a win.

Not sure but I’m guessing a HOA is similar to a strata council. You can’t avoid a strata council if you live in a strata here (any multi-unit property). I much prefer small stratas to large ones, I have to say. We’re 14 units in my small townhouse development, and we all get along; those of us who care help out and do a lot of work with decorating, cleaning, gardening, etc. Those of us who don’t, don’t. Before this I was in a strata with one unit occupied by drunk unemployed lawyers. It was always fun (well, not) when they turned up at AGMs, but fortunately they never wanted to be on council. I’ve heard horror stories about large stratas, though.

Property managers, however, are a totally different story. I haven’t met a competent property manager yet. I’ve only met some that ignore women on council and some that don’t. Our current one is reasonably priced, appears to listen to all of us, but then terrible on follow-through. That said, our alternative is to switch to one that’s expensive and terrible on follow-through. Sigh.

In other news, when you’re looking for feedback and don’t let someone speak, I will call it out and say that person x seems to want to share something before we move on to the next topic. The info solicitor comes from a group that does a poor job of facilitating meetings and lets people derail meetings when discussions should have been nipped for later discussion.

That person is a poor group leader, then. Good for you to draw attention to the problem. I was a department chair for nine years and ALWAYS tried to be inclusive at department meetings, while also aiming at some kind of efficiency. Kind of dueling goals, but you’ve got to try. Many folks in academia, and I presume in business too, are poor at reading people’s body language and facial expression. Ugh!

If someone asks for feedback and then cuts people off when they give it, that can make people wonder if they are really being sincere when asking.
