Tuesday scent of the day 7/19

Posted by Robin on 19 July 2022 149 Comments

It's Tuesday and National Daiquiri Day. Birthdays: Edgar Degas, Alice Dunbar Nelson, Brian May. What fragrance are you wearing?

More mango points: I'm still looking for my L'Artisan Parfumeur Nuit de Tubéreuse, but meanwhile I'm smelling delicious in (the sadly discontinued) Parfums de Nicolaï Eau Exotique. Later I'll shower with Yves Rocher Mango Coriander shower gel (and by the way, the annual What's In Your Shower poll is coming up on Saturday).

Reminder: on 7/22, for National Mango Day, wear a perfume (or a body product?) with a mango note, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is for DavidsTea Mango Matcha ("Elevate your matcha ritual. Made with a base of finely ground energizing green tea powder, pure cane sugar and juicy mango, this natural-flavoured matcha is a refreshing way to treat yourself while sipping the whole leaf benefits of green tea. Froth with milk for a green tea latte, blend with yogurt and ice for a matcha mango lassi..."), available as loose leaf or tea bags.

In the last wafts of SL Un Bois Vanille after a perfectly horrid night. Bleh!

Foxbins, if you see this, I’m wondering if you’ve gotten your Boyfriend yet, and what you think of it…There’s a rumor I bought a travel spray and I’m looking for feedback to justify this unnecessary purchase. 😬

Sorry you had a bad night — was it super-windy where you are? Sounded like near-hurricane strength here for a while. (And then I had nightmares about being stuck in snow … but that’s a whole other story.)

Sorry to hear you had a rough night! I think your Boyfriend travel spray is a very reasonable purchase. I have a bottle, and I find it super comforting in a casual way. It’s a fall favorite if mine.

Sistine, I think I pulled the trigger in the hopes it would bring fall on faster. I remember I really wanted to try it years ago based on reviews, then couldn’t find it anywhere. Completely forgot about until foxbins brought it up the other day. Thanks for assuaging my travel size guilt! 😃

    Hello all!

In one of my old favorites, Dzongkha. I bought a back up bottle recently but just had to see how the formula is in the new packaging. Still very much Dzongkha. Today I’m in my clear bottle and smelling like the calm I need for a long day.

    Have a great day everyone!

I’m in a little nineties-era Estée Lauder Private Collection, not as much oakmoss as I would have liked but still terrific, green but also rich and lush, really sophisticated.

Speaking of green and lush, I have managed not to kill off the plants on my balcony and the leaves are plentiful, so that makes me happy, but I don’t see any sign of flowers in three of them: I’m increasingly doubtful that they’ll flower at all, because there isn’t a whole lot of sun on this side of the building, just an hour in the morning and a few more in the evening, plus it’s been a fairly dismal summer so far (it’s raining yet again today). The forget-me-nots have bloomed but the perfume is scant — you have to gather a bunch up and put your nose to them to smell anything. I suspect I may just have to content myself with herbs and attractively leafy plants going forward and give up the idea of having a scented garden.

You could try a liquid fertilizer, if you haven’t already. There are formulas meant to encourage blooms. Or even just an all-purpose houseplant one, like Schultz.

Looks like I can do a whole week of mango scents, who knew? SOTA yesterday was Kilian Moonlight in Heaven. SOTA today will be Pacifica Brazilian Mango Grapefruit, my favorite Pacifica ever, and thus of course discontinued. But not to worry, I have a lifetime stash 🙂

Meanwhile off to do more combat gardening. Yesterday I hacked out a dead lavender bush, and I have the wounds to prove it. Today I will be playing with my favorite gardening power tool, a hand held (well, shoulder lugged) mulcher. Like a leaf blower in reverse. Vacuuming the yard, my husband calls it.

I’m back from my summer holidays in Turkey, had a wonderful week there. I feel recharged. The temperatures were usually around 35*C the whole time, so hot and I’m not really used to such high temps living in Poland.

from a a sample, highly recommend the Tauer sample sets. Love the little blue tin.

I am sniffing Tobacco Vanille as well. I think I like VF better today, tho the other vanilla is a great scent. I spilled a drop on my keyboard months ago and can still smell it.

Wishing everyone vanilla and mango scented loveliness on this terrific Tuesday.

I am wearing Phi Une Rose de Kandahar, two days in a row which is rare for me.
At work trying to concentrate and not to daydream.
Tomorrow i will try to find one with a mango note.

Has anyone here tossed their cosmetics since the pandemic? I have drawers full of no-longer-worn lipsticks, eye shadows and face powders. Part of me says toss it, but part of me feels really sad that at 56, my life as a « pretty girl » is over. What to do?

Just yesterday I thought to myself ” I used to be pretty” I have pretty much stopped wearing makeup since the shut down. I’ve tried a handful of times to restart wearing makeup but I just don’t care anymore and that makes me sad. I haven’t thrown anything out except mascara and my daughter has enough makeup that I can borrow if I ever feel up to it again. I’m thankful I still love my perfumes.

I wore it during my vacation in Montréal earlier this month, but that’s pretty much been it for the past 2+ years. I feel invisible in my life here in San Diego & BC, so why bother? For whatever reason being in the big city made me feel like I existed again as a woman. Interesting phenomenon.

Probably a good idea – just reduce the ones I’m not likely to ever wear again, hold on to the ones I still like.

Oh no, as long as we’re not pushing up daisies, our pretty girl days are NOT over. I systematically swatched all of my lipsticks on my hands/arms and sniffed them, and there were only two that had to be tossed. As for powder cosmetics, I think they last indefinitely if they smell okay. Now mascara and foundation, those have a shelf life. I’ve tossed those.
I don’t by any means wear cosmetics every day, but when I do, it’s because it boosts my mood and makes me feel pretty. And we all deserve to feel pretty. 🙂

        What Nancyleandros said.

I still wear less makeup than pre-pandemic, but I’ve actually started wearing a very neutral eyeshadow on days I have meetings (I rarely wore eyeshadow pre-pandemic). Had a GREAT brow-shaping just before I left Ireland, and am making friends again with my bolder lip colors. I’m in my mid-50s, generally invisible to people thanks to my age and mostly silver hair, but I’ve never looked better and as long as I am happy with how I look, I’m good. (Part of the happiness with how I look is, I think, the joy caring what others think!)

I have new, still sealed stuff. I am letting myself get rid of shades that don’t suit me, no matter how much they cost.

      I really should declutter that.

That’s a good idea – I don’t see myself wearing bright blue & green eyeshadow ever again. I’ve found a few neutral and subtle shades that I feel good in now.

I toss lipsticks after a few years, eye pencils after a few years +.

I don’t toss eye shadow, but I only use it very rarely so I brush off the top layer with a clean brush and then use another clean brush to apply.

I still have lots of makeup, even though I don’t wear it every day. I have pared some things down though.

Aging has given me hooded eyelids, but I’ve got a great taupe eyeshadow to counteract that (when I do wear it). Eyebrows are the one thing I need to do most days since the grey hairs have moved in.

No full-face makeup usually but I do a few things since it makes me feel better.

No make up for me since the pandemic. I just don’t feel like being bothered with it. I am still keeping very few lipsticks, mascaras, eye liners and powders in case I get in the mood to wear them. I feel ok with myself that way and that’s what it counts to me.

I think the loss of interest in makeup is not unusual since you’ve been going through an especially hard time on top of the stress of a world wide pandemic. I stopped wearing makeup entirely with the onset of the pandemic because of masking, face shields, and helmet respirators we use for Covid. Oh, and did I mention stress?! Lol

Previously, I wore makeup on work days because I think it helps patients to feel more confident if I look neat and put together vs the just rolled out of bed look.

I pared down a ton of makeup when I started traveling, and as mask mandates eased, I found myself using skin care and makeup in a more meditative way. I don’t have to rush to work as soon as I get up, and having time to thoughtfully do my skin care and makeup now makes me feel better.

I’ve never been a “pretty” girl, so I don’t feel the loss of that recognition really. I think beauty is ageless and some of the loveliest women are those that proudly wear their life experience on their face, made more noticeable when they smile and laugh. I HAVE packed on pounds as I’ve traveled since my regular biking/spinning and good food choices have gone out the window. It is what it is. I’m still wearing my maxi dresses everyday and mostly feeling good. I will say many middle aged and older women have asked me about my purple hair and have had positive comments. Doing this one thing has helped me feel more “seen” than anything. The feedback from complete strangers has been really fun! I’d say cut yourself a break, don’t make any big decisions until you feel you’ve gotten your equilibrium back. It will come back! I can attest to that! And then maybe do one thing out of your comfort zone and see how it goes. I’ve never seen you in a photo or in person, but I can guarantee you are BEAUTIFUL! 🤗

I have been thinking about doing purple hair for a couple of years now, LOL. Mostly I haven’t done it because my husband is horrified at the idea. But maybe next year I’ll actually do it! I think I look reasonably good for 56, despite being just a simple jeans & tshirt kind of woman. But you’re right, I’ve been through an exceptionally tough time and my mojo is going to take time to recover. Thank you for your sweet comments. 🙂

My official sotd is Clean Ultimate Beach Day, which is really nice. It’s hot and humid here ( not complaining! just reporting) I also have a sample spritz of Hypnotic Poiso on. I think I have talked myself into getting it again. I have a goal of trying to replace my early 2000 collection that I threw out/gave away (when I thought I would never wear perfume again) and HP is on the list.

Robin, your photo today inspired my morning beverage. I made a matcha latte (iced) with mango syrup. It was yummy! I don’t usually have my matcha lattes cold or with much sugar, so this was a fun twist.

All the comments yesterday and today made me realize I do have enough mango scents to do a whole week. It also made me realize the mango note is more versatile than I had initially thought, occurring in some scents I think of as cold-weather scents, like Or du Serail and Jungle l’Elephant. It’s definitely a fun note though, for cold or warm weather, I love that about mango! I’m going to go with Bombay Bling today.

Loads of Ninfeo Mio today since y’all were talking about it a bit on the weekend poll or late last week. Such a reliable summer scent for me. I also associate it with my boyfriend’s dad’s wedding about 10 years ago because I wore it that weekend. It was a very small ceremony at an old Tudor mansion turned inn/event site in Northern Ohio. Just a beautiful setting. And I got to experience my first gardenia flower with the boutonniere that my bf was given to wear.

I’m wearing one of my new purchases from Luckyscent, I bought two FBs to help average the shipping costs. This is Ormond Jayne Ta’if, which I’ve wanted for years. When I visited London seven years ago (it’s that long ago!!), I made a difficult choice between Ta’if and Orris Noir, now I’ve finally got both.

My SOTD may seem surprising: Zoologist Chipmunk. It seems to have been marketed as or come to be associated with fall fragrances, maybe because it is woodsy and nutty, but I’m finding it a cozy delight in hot weather, I think maybe because of its top notes of quince and blood mandarin. It’s also fairly sweet, but not in any sickening way (I do find several of their scents too sweet, including Hummingbird and Nightingale). I found my sample of it in the bag I was looking through the other day of recent patchouli samples, and now I’ve worn it quite a few times. I probably don’t need a FB but maybe a travel bottle is in my future.
