Monday scent of the day 7/18

Posted by Robin on 18 July 2022 171 Comments

It's (a very Mondayish) Monday. Also, Nelson Mandela International Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm taking points early in Hermès Un Jardin Sur le Nil. Possibly I'll just wear it all week.

Reminder: on 7/22, for National Mango Day, wear a perfume (or a body product?) with a mango note, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Second-ing Robin’s ‘very Monday-ish Monday’, although it is raining here today, and I can’t remember when my geo-area had a nice good rain (probs like couple of months), we certainly need it.

Yesterday I wore Violette, which seemed a nice concept, but didn’t last an hour on me. Today I am going for Versace; I figure if a little glam doesn’t chase the Monday blah-ness away at least a little, then nothing will.

    Hello!

It’s hot and humid here, and I’m wearing Eau de Guerlain. I first wore it in 1995, and when I put it on, it reminds me of that time, every time lol.

Hope everyone has a good week ahead of them 🙂

A busy week ahead of me and not much energy.
    Have a great week.

SOTD is Jo Malone Fig and Lotus Flower, which was a sample I got in an order from Nordstrom right before vacation. Fig seemed like a good note for a dreary, rainy, jet lagged morning. It was worth a try — I haven’t tried any JMs for a long time — but it’s not a keeper, even as a sample. I have a ton of samples from my pre-vacation US shopping spree to get through, anyway, so on to the next as soon as this wears off.

I know most of the rest of the world doesn’t feel this way today, but here it feels more like winter than it did in Cape Town on Saturday. I think it’s supposed to warm up a bit later this week, though. Mr. Ockeghem will be sweltering in Germany this week, so I’m not complaining about PNW weather.

For the CP, if only I owned Snoopy Fragrance Let’s Mango! Love Snoopy, love the name. Oh well.

According to Fragrantica, I have 2 mango fragrances – Timbuktu and Jardin Sur Nil so I’m joining the crowd in JSN today 🙂

I’m picking up new glasses today and chose Chanel 19 EDT for that … just in case there’s a problem and I need a spine. My last several pairs have all come from this place and I’ve never had the smallest complaint, but the pandemic wreaked havoc and my mom has had issues with them, so … you know. Just in case.

For Mango Day I plan on wearing Goodsir’s Or du Serail (weather permitting). Fragrantica doesn’t list it if you search “mango” under notes, but the page for OdS itself definitely includes mango. If it’s too humid on Friday, I have a little mini of Sur le Nil to serve as fallback.

Hope Monday’s not too bad for everyone. Looks like we have another hot day on tap here — we are in the heat layer above the fog. Toasty.

Had a fun (if smoky) (and hot) visit to Yosemite last week for our 30th wedding anniversary. On the way home we detoured past Mono Lake and thru Bodie (ghost town), fun.

Been working on house projects too — finally finished installing new closet doors in two rooms, which of course did not go smoothly at all, but yay, it’s done.

And now I’m popping on my walking shoes and heading off to feed a neighbor’s cats — it’ll be about a 2 mile walk. Best to get going before it gets too hot.

SOTD is 4711 Pink Pepper & Grapefruit. I bet it’ll be gone before I get to the neighbor’s house.

Like many here, probably the only scent with a mango note that I have is Sur le Nil, but I have to be in just the right mood to wear it; sometimes it seems just a little too high-pitched for me.

There’s a chance that I’ve found somebody to adopt one of the five kittens I’m fostering, which is very good news! Unfortunately this woman (a friend of one of my oldest friends) lives many hours away, so it will eventually mean a long car ride for my little Turtle — but I feel good about it, nonetheless. Turtle has been my favorite of the bunch, simply because she loved me big time from the very start, and after talking to this woman I feel confident that Turtle would be going to a very loving home where she will be adored and well cared for (and have a big brother, to boot). This summer of fostering has been absolutely splendid, despite (or perhaps because of) the fact that the pack has overtaken my life. At this moment I am meeting Easy-Peasy’s urgent need for head scritches, while he purrs madly and makes air biscuits.

        18 July 2022 at 12:18 pm

At this point, it probably depends upon if I can get the other four adopted. I’m getting very little adoption help from the shelter (they’ve ignored my last 5 emails with photos and descriptions of the kittens, which I was hoping they would post on their Petfinder and Facebook pages). I don’t do much social media (nor do I want to), and I thought that my role was to provide the kittens with a loving home and reduce the burden on the shelter, while they worked to get them adopted — clearly that’s not going to be the case. I think I have another potential adopter for Cashmere, but the three black kitties might be a little harder to find homes for. So, if I’m going to end up caring for those three long-term, I might not foster again. If I can find homes for them, I would definitely consider fostering again — it’s been a blast to have my world revolve around funny, furry little felines.

Yes, that is the ridiculous case. Both cats and dogs that are black are more difficult to find homes for. It’s so silly, and from an aesthetic standpoint, I really don’t get it; these three black kittens — Bully Idol, Easy-Peasy, and Braveheart — are simply gorgeous. Braveheart looks like an Egyptian cat statue (all sleek and willowy), Easy is super handsome, and the woolly Bully looks kinda like a dark Maine Coon.

Having kept black cats in the past, can also say that you have to be more careful if they are outside cats…weird people will do weird things. If I ever have one again I will keep it inside.

I’m going to go visit the shelter in person tomorrow, since nobody appears to be reading my emails. I get that they’re probably overworked and understaffed, but even a “Hey, thanks for the photos, how are the kittens doing?” reply would be appreciated. There hasn’t been a single check-in on their part, and it’s been over two months since I brought the furballs home.

Some of the best cats I have had in my life were black cats! I like the superstition that some places in the Far East have about them: black cats are bringers of financial good fortune.

Wish I could help with your fosters, but I am tapped out at 2 cats currently.

You have done a wonderful thing by fostering those 5 babies and hope they all get adopted. soon. That is strange and unfortunate the shelter is helping to get them listed on their website for adoption. I am in San Diego and it seems like folks who foster here are easing the burden and taking care of them but all other efforts are done by the shelter or nonprofit,

I’m wearing Timbuktu and inadvertently participating in this week’s CP.
I did not know this has a mango note (nor am I smelling any mango) until I saw allo’s comment above.
I have two other perfumes with a (discernible) mango note in my collection: Bombay Bling and Un Jardin sur le Nil.

I need to do some mango research but I have SLN for Friday if nothing else. Today I am enjoying a successful blind buy of Balenciaga’s Florabotanica. I get mint + indistinct green notes + rose, which is very fun and good for the 90+F temps we are suppose to get this week. The black and white stripe detail on/in the bottle seems like a late 80s/early 90s design choice, so I was surprised to see this came out in 2012. It reminds me of Beetlejuice’s suit.

Tea this morning was Clippership’s Golden Monkey so that I had something delicious to savor on the commute to the office. For this afternoon I have my old standby of Twinings English Breakfast, which I will glam up with cinnamon if I can find some in the office kitchen.

    Almost 100% positive I have no mango. I’m such a CP ne’er-do-well…

But, I am big and bodacious in Montalé Arabians Tonka. One spray last night which is continuing to expand exponentially, just like the universe! Yee Haw, it is so BIG! This is not delicate mincing Arabian! No, more like a huge galloping draft horse that shakes the ground as it pounds towards you, mane and tail flying, hooves the size of a large dinner plates gouging and flinging up huge clods of earth, eyes white rimmed, nostrils dilated and whose broad mass displaces the air before it. In other words, monumental!

I like this kind of thing only very occasionally, but when it is that occasion, I enjoy it immensely!

    Happy Monday!

I slept until 9:30 this morning which hasn’t happened in years, must have needed it. But it makes me feel a little groggy, even with extra coffee.
Wearing Zoologist Bee today. After much needed rain all weekend, it’s now sunny and hot and Bee just feels like everything summer to me. Time for another trip to the vegetable stands.

No mango this week. Today is Chanel Paris-Deauville. It is about the only thing that works in this heat. High 90’s this week.

I am off to North Carolina for the next few weeks so only a few scents coming with me and I probably won’t be posting. I will probably be lurking though to see any news in the perfume world.

Hello perfume friends! Work is silly, the world is sad, and the weather is frightening – sudden extreme heat warnings here. Hope everyone is okay wherever you are reading this from. Wearing double Chanel for a fun comparison: Allure on one wrist and Allure Sensuelle on the other. They smell related but not close, and both are helping me to keep my temper this evening. Began the day in BV Eau Sensuelle in the hopes I would feel something other than irritated on a Monday morning at work…no luck there but what a lovely perfume it is! Haven’t worn it in aeons but put it on my summer shelf today (that is a new feature for me as my bottles usually live in boxes neatly stacked in cupboards, but some are worn so rarely that I wanted a temporary display) and it will get a little more attention now I know it’s wonderful!

Like several of you, I think all I have with a mango note is Jardin Sur le Nil. I’ll wear that today AND Friday. Like ockeghem, I’m not complaining, but it’s so cold in my living room that I’m wrapped in a blanket with lots of hot coffee at my work-from-home desk (PNW). Monday is not my favorite, but it’s smooth sailing at the moment with two bosses OOO today.

In other news, we get new carpet tomorrow and Wednesday (finally) and I’ve ordered a new vacuum to celebrate. For anyone interested, I ended up choosing the Shark Apex Duo-Clean and will post my thoughts once I’ve used it. (not an ad, I’m not affiliated) We’ve been planning to do this ever since we moved in in 2017 and were about get it installed before COVID hit back in 2020; and although I thought it best to hold off, the carpet store owner told me he’s never been busier than during 2020 and 2021!

The heat 🔥 wave from the continent hit us today but now keeping cool in my north west bedroom, I chose the acidulated Addict Eau Délice for the day but this evening it’s Quartz de Molyneux, waving to Jalapeno. It’s like an easier Diorella at least from my vintage bottle (I knew it was oldish but it lists only perfume and water, so it’s proper vintage), it is a little gem I find.

Thank you Robin, yes, the bedrooms have a good exposition for High temps. The problem with heat waves in the UK is that the infrastructure is not ready for such temperatures, so rails bend… etc. And folks don’t have AC either. But today forecast already sees a change in the weather.

SOTD = Jo Malone Salt & Amber

Just perfect for today! Got caught in the torrential downpour this morning. Thank God for umbrellas but the pants still got wet. It stopped about 3/5 of the way to the office but I can tell you for certain that the sections where there’s construction, there were 💧 💧.

Went to Starbucks this morning and said I wanted to pay for a “cheaper” sandwich because I got charged for a more expensive one last Friday. I got the more expensive sandwich for free because it was too much to handle it the way I suggested. Eh? It was nice though to her it for free, not that I am hard pressed for the difference – it was the principle.

Finally, I must have been mistaken for someone else because I got for free and without asking a sample of the newest offering plus a 7 or 9mL of a travel spray from an indie niche line. Both are very very good. I suppose I shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth and just thank the brand for it even if I don’t necessarily agree with its philosophy.

Mixed bag for me on the very muggy Monday. On the plus side, all the out-of-season blankets have been washed and put away. Whoo hoo! On the minus side, Spooky kitty threw up on the wood floor, then pooped there. Sometimes she has problems getting to the litterbox, and today was one of those times. Sigh. 💩

I feel rather prone to swaggering about in my sample sprays of Wilhelm Mango Skin! It’s a scent I got in some sample grab bag and I have unexpectedly enjoyed it a lot. It’s juicy and fresh but classy. I even wore some sprays to physical therapy today. I did 20 minutes on the step machine! Very low level setting but still, I’m proud and can tell it’s going to help. I had my therapist before for both my hip and my knee, and felt happy to see her again. How she feels about it may be less clear! She warned me that it’s going to take hard work given that my injuries have meant more time has elapsed since my knee surgery. But still, it doesn’t sound hopeless.

I’m rarely in the mood for rose, but I’ve been gravitating towards some the last few days. I think it’s because of sniffing some yellow tea roses last weekend. Today I finished off a sample of Les Indemodables Rose de Jamal. I prefer it to PoaL and Rose 31, neither of which agree with me, but I don’t need any more than the sample.
