Thursday scent of the day 7/14

Posted by Robin on 14 July 2022 133 Comments

It's Almost-Friday, plus, happy Bastille Day! It's also Shark Awareness Day. Birthdays: Gustav Klimt, Ingmar Bergman. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Providence Perfume Co Branch & Vine. Yes, I would like a bottle.

Reminder: 7/15 will be FBW Friday...wear a full-bottle-worthy perfume that you have not yet bought, but would like to. (This is probably a repeat.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Now I’m curious about that perfume, Robin. Just read the review, sounds great. I’m in Ta´if, would love a decant of this one.

I really like it. I would buy the small size were it not for the roller bottle

Thunked a sample of Ormonde Jayne Isfarkand: I’ve had it for eons and only just finished it today because it isn’t very interesting, really. I mean, it’s fine, it’s whatever, but I sure wouldn’t buy a whole bottle, so I guess it’s kind of the anti-CP.

Presumably most of us have so many points for general good perfumistaship that we can afford to lose one or two along the way 😉

Copying Pyramus in the anti-cp I am one spray away from thunking my sample of Scandal by Roja. Its just a white floral with a huge price tag.

I finished my Etiquette book. I learned some pointers for small talk and to body language. One thing she mentions is how to stand elegantly which is in a relaxed 3rd position in ballet. Most of the book I skimmed through..

Tomorrow I hope to participate in the CP but I am volunteering at the library and so I usually am commando or a 1 light spray of something..Yours truly, Ms Bookman

In beauty related news, yesterday I started a serum treatment for my hair/scalp. Its by Renee Furterer. I read lots of positive reviews online, and I think its stress but my hair is needed some TLC.

Good luck! My eyebrows have suddenly gotten patchy, I think from stress, and my sister who had the same issue swears by a particular serum, so I bit the bullet and ordered some. NOT cheap. We’ll see how it goes. I hope your hair responds to the TLC!

        😂😂😂
There was actually some information on how to sit, as in when someone pulls out the chair for you, and once you sit you should keep you legs together and put them off to the left and you can cross your ankles but never your legs. 😂

I’m working on the CP in the almost last dregs of a mini of Safari that I’ve had since the nineties. I always forget how much I love this until I wear it. It is definitely full bottle worthy, but I keep getting sidetracked by the “niche” fragrances.

SOTM is Wazamba, from a decant provided by a very sweet NSTer. A bottle has been in and back out of my LS cart many times, along with a bottle of Regime des Fleurs Little Flower, as I waffle hopelessly over whether I actually need either in FB quantity. Right now I think I need both, but there are also Bel Ami, Bel Respiro, Cuir Cannage, and a host of others to consider (such as vintage Sous le Vent, unavailable at any price I fear). Must. Win. Lottery. Or something. At least I have no shortage of CP choices for tomorrow!

Accidently I am right on point with the CP. Wearing Ambra Aurea from a little sample vial that has been floating around my work surface for weeks. I have gone through two decants of this but for some reason each time I am ready to buy it I neglect to pull the trigger. It is expensive, and strong, so one doesn’t need very much of it per wearing. (The 18 ml, which is what I should buy, is a whopping $100 if I could ever find it.) My current decant it tucked away with my winter perfumes. But I do love love love this perfume.

Robin, you smell lovely. I have a sample of that one, too, though have never bought the FB.

SOTD is House of Gozdawa Hel, which from paper I thought might like because it was interesting & a bit different than what I normally gravitate towards, but on my skin it doesn’t work. Notes are grapefruit marsh, tuberose, and cajeput. I got a bit of the grapefruit to start, and I can smell the tuberose in there, but I think it’s the cajeput that’s not agreeing with me? (I wasn’t familiar with this note before now.) On me, it smells like a hippie shop in Harvard Square in about 1993. I did like some of the other House of Gozdawa scents — Simo and Guilty Pleasures were well put together.

Anyway, I left the store with Please Wait Here from Apartment, another local brand. I liked everything I smelled from Apartment, but Please Wait Here felt more like this moment to me — sunny late afternoon, winter, after a very chill drive along Chapman’s Peak Drive. I’ll be sad to leave Cape Town! (And many, many thanks to Johanò for his list of local brands!)

Continuing with samples today – I wore A Quiet Morning from Miller et Bertaux for my quiet morning. It was nice, but it was a little flat on my skin. I’d love to smell it on my husband.

Post-shower I switched to Aedes de Venustas’ Signature. Now this one I really like!!! The rhubarb/ tomato leaf is just dynamite.

PSA: Kate Walsh has her new website up and running, http://www.boyfriendperfume.com. For a sample of Boyfriend, use code SAMPLER and just pay $4.99 for shipping. It looks like it is US only.

I’ve wanted to try Boyfriend for a while and couldn’t find it anywhere, so I was happy to see this. I am hoping it lives up to the hype. Today I am wearing Grand Neroli, from one of the little vials in my Atelier Advent calendar from a couple of years back. It’s nice, and if I didn’t have hundreds of bottles already I might be tempted to buy a full bottle, but I do so I won’t.

I’m in Copal Azur, for no other reason than I haven’t worn it for a while. It’s a contender for the CP, but I’m not sure that I love it so much that I’d buy it instead of something else. Has anybody found that fragrance “wow” experiences are getting more infrequent? Perhaps it’s just habituation to the circumstances of intensely focusing on a scent, or the fact that I’ve spent many years exploring fragrance and am rarely surprised anymore, or that I just don’t keep up with new releases. It’s been a long time since I’ve smelled something and thought — “That’s altogether gorgeous and I must have it!”

I love a matching lotion and fragrance. The notes just have to be similar. If there are holes in my collection, like my quest for a beach scent, then I hunt. The suggestions here are usually spot on. And, don’t get me started on my search for sentimental fragrances.

I am exactly the same re. Workout or work. The thing that I use to trick me into action is employing curiosity. So, instead of saying ‘do it, you’ll be glad” I say, “ I wonder how it will go today and how I will feel. I wonder what will happen that’s different from yesterday. I wonder what I’ll see and notice. I wonder if I will feel stronger or tired“ For some reason that works . I think it makes it less of a boring, repetitive trial and more of an adventure into the unknown. Plus I promise myself, “just give it a few minutes and then you can give up”

That’s a very smart strategy. I am quite lazy but also very curious and that has helped me to no end in life. 😉 I have often told my boss that I am not necessarily the smartest person in any room/meeting, etc. but I am very curious and often hunt down answers/figure out things others won’t b/c it doesn’t make sense/piques my interest. Perfume and curiosity go very well together too. 🙂

This reminds me that I used to have a good strategy, but fell out of the habit. I would work out in the morning, so the deal I made with myself was that I had to put on my sneakers and brush my teeth. If I didn’t want to work out after that, I could go back to bed. 99% of the time, I did the work out (and honestly, I probably was better off getting extra sleep the other other 1%). I need to find a similar strategy now that my schedule has changed and I want to get myself to work out at night…

Tough morning, feeling slightly better after a tylenol with codeine. I might be able to go for a walk.

Will wear another sample today, Thomas de Monaco Pure Gold.

Not too long ago I read The Best Intentions by Inmarsat Bergman. It’s based on the marriage of his parents and was later made into a movie . The father is a divinity student, whereas the mother has money. It’s a really good book about the nature of relationships: son/ mother, husband/ wife and the struggles between them. It has a sadness and tenderness to it. Someone compared it to Ibsen but if you like Edith Wharton you might also like it. Matching it to Chypre Mousse : a bit introverted, spare and beautiful.
Still raining! I walked in the graveyard yesterday and saw a very sorry looking rabbit. It was drenched and staring into space, but hopped away, through a hole in a slab of concrete ( under a grave ). Signs of daffodil buds. The trees had that stark look they get when they are soaked through, very dark against the grey sky.

I’m heading into the office today, I am definitely feeling better, although still not quite back to normal. I was going to wait till Monday, but the IT issues are piling up. Lots of systems have changed, and more and more things are not working on my laptop and phone.
I’ll wear Chambre Noire for my expedition, nothing to do with the CP, but very appropriate for a winter day.

My sample of Momotaro from On the Nose is rather condensed and sticky at this point and I unfortunately will never have a full bottle. The etsy shop was theoretically taking a short break but hasn’t returned in years and there doesn’t seem to be any other mention of the perfumer either

I got my workout in today by vacuuming the stairs and the master bedroom. The cats were not thrilled by this turn of events, and promptly vanished when I fired up said vacuum.

SOTD = back in yesterday’s layering of Dame Narcissus Soliflore perfume oil and Wrappings EdP.

For the CP: Un Bois Vanille. I have a Frag…Net travel spray, which could *almost* be a lifetime supply. I think it smells so strait-forwardly delightful, and it lasts on me. I passed a full bottle up many times to buy one of M. Luten’s more unusual creations but it is now a high favorite in the way Claire de Musc is, or Vetiver Oriental. Uncle Serge and Mr. Sheldrake made my favorite musk and vetiver, and I think this might be my favorite vanilla!

Took a mini vacation earlier this week with a friend who I haven’t gotten to see much during COVID. We drove ridiculously far to see our favorite band at an outdoor venue. Seeing her, going on vacation, and going to a concert made it feel like it was 2019!

I brought along my Fzotic samples because I’ll take any one of them in a full bottle, please. I’m back home today, and enjoying wafts of Ummagumma.

Tea today was a strong pot of Fortnum & Mason Countess Grey.

I thought I had a good candidate for the cp. Fenty edp.
I sprayed my sample when I got to work, and way oversprayed! After about 10 minutes it started making me feel sick to my stomach. Ugh… that was 4 hours ago and I am still wafting across the country I am sure.
Anyway, I no longer want a full bottle. Money saved!

So my SOTD, for CP points, is St. Clair Scents’ Song of Aubrac, a gorgeous fragrance centered on narcissus absolute and named for a rural region of France (Happy Bastille Day!). It is absolutely FBW, as are pretty much all of St. Clair Scents’ offerings. I think I’ll be wearing another tomorrow!

The good news for me is that I found my bottle of Caligna which does that trick of being all pine needles instead of figgy, good thing I like pine needles. Don’t seem to be able to drop off to sleep 😴 again, it’s midnight here, so I’m going to read the comments instead.

    SOTD = Tauer Dark Passage

Long discontinued and if we were to believe Andy, never to be made again…I am still hoping for more!

There was transit suspension this morning and I gave myself 2 extra hours of sleep 😴. Tomorrow’s another day!

I picked up my air purifier today and it is now all set up. So I moved the one I had in the living room to the extra messy room upstairs. I really need to get back to cleaning.

Looking forward to see what everyone’s picks are tomorrow!
