Friday scent of the day 7/1

Posted by Robin on 1 July 2022 240 Comments

Rabbit rabbit rabbit! It's July, and Canada Day. Also, International Reggae Day, National Gingersnap Day and International Joke Day. Birthdays: George Sand, Estée Lauder, Debbie Harry, Princess Diana. Our community project for today: pick an occasion (it doesn't have to be listed here!) and a fragrance to match, and tell us about it.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

As luck would have it, I'm at the beach on Estée Lauder's birthday. I'm in Bronze Goddess Whipped Body Creme.

Reminder: on 7/8, for Kevin Bacon's birthday, we're doing a variation on six degrees of separation. In place of film, you can use perfumer and/or brand, and we're starting with Chanel No. 5. Can you get to the fragrance you want to wear without going more than six steps from Chanel No. 5? (example: Chanel No. 5 -> Chanel Paris Paris (by Olivier Polge) -> Burberry Brit Rhythm (by Olivier Polge, Dominique Ropion & Anne Flipo -> L'Artisan Ananas Fizz (by Anne Flipo) -> L'Artisan Timbuktu (by Bertrand Duchaufour) -> Aedes Copal Azur; that would be 5 degrees of separation.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    🐰🐰🐰!
I am attracting all the bunnies with I Love Les Carottes 🥕.
I will be celebrating Canada Day by eating vanilla ice cream drizzled with maple syrup. Perfect way to cool down.

Rabbit rabbit rabbit — I remembered! Still in bed (it’s only 6:30 here, so I’m entitled) but have been waiting to post in answer to foxbins’ question yesterday. Go to smittenkitchen.com and type “salad” into the search box — you’ll get recipes for every summer salad known to humanity. Plus, she makes everything look just so delicious!

In other news, I did manage to find great glasses frames yesterday, so in a couple of weeks the jolts in the mirror will cease — yay! My current spex look okay with their clip-on sunshades on, so they are destined to be my prescription sunglasses and won’t go totally to waste.

Not sure what my CP selection will be, but Jour d’Hermes is on the tip of my brain along with Cristalle EDT, to celebrate the arrival of July. Or something more clever than that. Happy Friday everyone!

    Rabbit rabbit rabbit!

It *is* Canada Day, I have the flag hung off the balcony railing, and I am wearing the only Canadian thing I own, Alfred Sung Encore, one of those big fat tuberosey orientals that became ubiquitous in the wake of Dior Poison. It didn’t make much of a splash but I’ve always loved it.

Jubilation 25 is more floral, less incense and herbs than XXV. I can’t really recall 25’s exact scent, because I first wore them together, one on either arm. While I sniffed the XXV arm a lot, I didn’t really bother with the 25 arm. I just realized that while I was enjoying XXV, 25 was meh. Since then, I’ve worn XXV, but not 25.

Soft Animal would have been perfect, but Sauvage works too — I have un petit lapin sauvage that hops through my back yard fairly often. So cute! But I worry about being overrun by cute little bunnies if nature (or a local coyote) doesn’t take a hand. 🥹

I remembered my rabbits in the early morning hours. I was so tired last night I went to bed before the sun, so I woke up really early on my own feeling very rested.
I’m in Beautiful for Estée Lauder’s bday. A few drops from a vintage mini, probably from 92 or 93, which is considered vintage at this point right? I know I’ve mentioned this before but this was my wedding perfume.☺️

Thank you for the good luck words yesterday, my daughter got the job! She will start after she returns from summer camp. I remember the excitement of having my own money.🤩 She has a couple of good friends that work there also so that will be nice.
It’s a gorgeous day here to kick off our long holiday weekend. We have no real firm plans yet, I guess we’ll just see what each day brings.
    Happy Friday!🌞

I’ve been going through the bag of thunked samples from June, and resniffed the Masque Russian Tea dabber. There was some left, so I’m accidentally wearing it on my fingers, not that I mind! I’ll figure out what to wear later, possibly Neroli Outrenoir.

It’s only projected to get to 87 degrees today, which is unheard of at this time of year in Houston. Yesterday was lovely too. I’ll enjoy it while I can, because the return of the heat is inevitable. 🥵

I saw them! Just beautiful! I’m conflicted about fresh flowers. Although I think they’re lovely, it seems cruel to cut them down at the height of their glory. I’m also the weirdo who wouldn’t walk on grass as a young kid because I saw each blade of grass as a tiny individual and I didn’t want to hurt it by walking on it. I’m sure there’s a diagnosis for me somewhere in the DSM-V.🤷🏻‍♀️

lol! Generally I prefer live plants to cut flowers, and I have a garden where I can plant them, but you can’t grow herbaceous peonies where I live (too hot; they need lots of time with temps at or below freezing). I also remind myself that buying the flowers keeps a flower grower growing them!

I remember feeling a lot more light hearted about the book when I originally read it as a young adult. I read it again decades later and found it very depressing, the descent into mental illness. Sylvia Plath is genius, too bad her life was cut tragically cut short.

What to wear? What to wear? It’s sunny, 68, with no humidity. And I’ll be inside most of the day. 🙄🙁. But I’ll be out at 6 pm, so evening will still be nice. We drove over to the Lake MI side of the peninsula for dinner last night. I had fish tacos, and my husband had pan-fried perch. Yummy. Perfect weather.

So…I decided Chamade in all its green glory should be my SOTD. Thought about Aliage for EL, but the hand went elsewhere.

Irritated that for two months, our health care premiums will go up substantially. Husband moved to Medicare + supplement but I’m still on our original, and the cost barely moved downward. It never ends, the $$$ fleeing from me.

Celebrating Estée Lauder’s birthday in Beyond Paradise from the beautiful multicolored bottle.

Very hot and muggy here today in the 90’s. I ran my errands early this morning before Trader Joe’s and the rest of the places I went to got crowded.
I am on my second cup of iced coffee with a slice of strawberry cheesecake. No cooking today, so it will be a day of either pizza or salads.

    Happy Friday! 🌞

I love the bottle and the juice of Beyond Paradise, however I didn’t like much Beyond Paradise Blue and I barely wore it. The travel size sprays were also beautiful! I do not like the new bottles at all.

What a rough day today with the heat. I slowed down and stay cool inside, watching tv most of the time, which is very unusual for me. I hope tomorrow is at least less humid, so I can keep up with my tasks at home.

Glad I’m not a rabbit. Fruit and veggies are so expensive due to winter weather and yesterday I paid $6.50 for an iceberg lettuce. A small cucumber was $5.50. And capsicum $4 each. That makes one expensive salad. Guess I will just have to live on champagne and chocolate until spring. Had my weekly meeting in the botanic gardens…four jumpers and a down jacket…the magnolias have large downy buds now. I love the way the large, heritage trees ( oaks, beech, elm etc) look in winter, so sculptural without their leaves. Such a contrast to the native trees which keep their leaves. Wearing Wander .

It is interesting to see which beach restaurants are raising their prices and which aren’t…they’ve all got to be paying more for everything this year (there’s a terrible labor shortage here in addition to everything else).

The place where we usually have a splurge meal once a summer is now comically past our comfort level even for a splurge.

They are similar – sisters who look a lot alike but are not twins. I have BG Eau Fraiche, and it is has a noticeably lighter body and sillage than Terracotta. Terracotta is more full- bodied and has more amber. I’ve seen some people describe BG as the daytime version and Terracotta as the nighttime version of the same scent and I think it is a good way to describe it. If I were at the beach on a hot sunny day, I’d be happy with BG Eau Fraiche getting intensified by the heat&sun&sweat, but Terracotta would be too much for me.

The body cream is much stronger and longer lasting than the Eau Fraiche, or used to be. If you put it on your whole body, you’d be packing some serious sillage. I tend to just put it on my legs.

I’m joining those of you celebrating Estee’s birthday in vintage White Linen. I’ve worn this every Fourth of July for as long as I can remember, the only time I wear it, and so I have many wonderful memories associated with it. Since there’s only a tiny bit left and today’s her birthday, I’ve decided to wear it the entire weekend and the holiday itself and then say goodbye 😿.

We’ve really been enjoying going to as many outdoor concerts as possible as well as trips to our local pool. Taking a break today to stay home and catch up on ‘stuff’ before our community’s fireworks celebration tomorrow and then Rockin’ in the Park on Monday with a Bob Seger tribute band and more fireworks.

    Have a great weekend! 🧨

I really hate to say goodbye to my bottle just for the reasons you state, yet someone posted recently on fragrantica that she had recently purchased a bottle having finished the original long ago and didn’t sense any differences from the one she’d loved back in the 80’s. So maybe 🤞?

In Nicolai’s Poudre de Musc Intense, and it is perfect. Smellier, and delicious, was a fancy tin of Portuguese mackerel in olive oil that I had for lunch. I kept delaying the indulgence as the scent can be strong and I didn’t want to put anyone off. But the only meetings I have today are virtual. The cat is out of his mind with whatever bouquet is lingering in kitchen 🙂 🙂 🙂

LOL! Strangely enough, neither of my cats are “fish people”. But they do like shellfish and will beg unrelentingly if we are eating shrimp.

I should have worn an Estée Lauder scent but did not think of it.

I took today off, though I will work July 4 holiday. I spent The morning smelling of cleaner, since I did a bunch of grungy cleaning jobs. But at least they are out of the way. I am wearing Escentric Molecule 04 and starting on some meal prep.

Rabbit … eh, does anyone want to donate any rabbits to me?

SOTD = Jo Malone Salty Amber

Woot! Yes, I bought a bottle and love it and love the bottle! Salty mineral fresh green amber with a very tiny bit of vanilla. With the CP really for anything goes 🎊 🧨

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CfeqLhXOs75/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

Did a Costco run today. The parking lot was very crowded but surprising, it wasn’t too bad inside. Today, I noticed price increases that I have never before – perhaps I was looking for them? For example, I buy 2 dozen organic eggs which used to be $4.99 (or actually probably lower) and today it was $7.49, a 50% increase! Avocado oil went up almost 40%. I don’t think it will really change my eating habits, but it is really making me think twice about only buying what I need.

I keep hearing about adding “sumac” to food. I saw a sitcom sized packet but have to clue for what purpose I would use it. I f you use sumac, how do you use it? Is it spicy hot or spicy tasty or does it make something more gourmand? I could be thinking of another substance but sumac reminds me of either a poison or an antidote to one. Thanks.

You can have the spare set of rabbits I said this morning. Teflon kitty gave me a quizzical look when I quietly muttered “Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit” under my breath at 5:13am.

Sumac isn’t spicy hot. IIRC, it’s kind of fruity. Been a while since I’ve had it. There is a Persian restaurant in Morristown that had it as a condiment on the table in addition to salt and black pepper.

        Thank you, dear 🐇!

I may have been to that Persian restaurant in Morristown! As to sumac, I forgot to see how much it costs but I’m tempted the next time I go.

I used to work across the street from that Persian restaurant and it was my favorite lunch spot!

I like adding sumac to hummus; with cumin to sautéed carrots & chick peas; and to garlic yogurt sauce.

No kidding! I used to go there when I was doing game conventions up in Morristown from 2009 to 2016. LOVED the kebabs and the Shirin Polo.

Sumac has a tangy, light fruity, flavor. It is not spicy. It is perfect on grilled meats, especially on kababs, like Kabab Koobideh. It can also be sprinkled on roasted vegetables and on some fruits. It is a staple ingredient in my kitchen.

Sending Caz good luck. I’m wearing Smell Bent One this morning, for its old paperback book smell since what I do the most in summer is read. Making duck soup for dinner, I found a duck leg in the corner of the freezer and thought I should use it.

    🐇🐇🐇!

Hot & humid today. The Real Feel temp was high enough that I decided groceries could wait until tomorrow.

SOTD = Estee Lauder Azuree. I am house twins with Robin today! Glad I got one of the older bottles of Azuree, before the container was changed to something boring.

Hahaha, boring bottles are no fun. 🙂 Many of the older EL bottles were glorious.

I blind bought Insolence edt for the silly bottle, lucked out when I found I love the scent.

It rained here and it was so humid when I just opened the door to check and it did not cool down anything afterwards. I have modern Azuree from about 5 years ago … need to look for it and wear one of these days.

Late to the party, coming to you from the San Juan Islands (start of 2 week vacation!) in a crazy melange of Une Rose and CdG Black Pepper and celebrating my birthday, that I also happen to share with Princess Diana (July 1, 1961).

Funny story….on “our” 22nd birthday, I decided it would be a good idea to write to the Princess and tell her that we must be twin sisters, mysteriously separated at birth, and that I read that on her birthday, she received lots of jewelry, haute couture and fancy trips while I received a paperback book, some tennis balls and a couple of bath bombs. I didn’t stop there.

I enlisted a friend to take photos of me in Princess Diana-like outfits in various Princess Diana-like poses: me visiting children in a hospital, avoiding paparazzi on a shopping trip and chatting it up at a soirée.

Weeks passed and I’d given up on any hopes of the Princess responding to my letter. Then one day, I found a letter FROM BUCKINGHAM PALACE under some other papers on a table and when I asked said roommate she said, “Oh yah, I meant to tell you that came in mail a couple of weeks ago.” WHAT?!!

The letter was from the Princess’s Lady in Waiting and explained that the Princess had very much enjoyed the lovely photos and note. I’m dubious. I’m thinking the letter and photos went directly to her security detail…”if you ever see this woman on the grounds…”

So on our birthday every year, I’m always a little sad that she didn’t get to see her children grow up and I’m all the more grateful for my life, even sans lots of jewelry and haute couture.

dear allo, I do hope you enjoy your birthday and vacation to the utmost. 🙂

LOVE your Diana-twin adventure. I’m always a bit sad, too, when I think of her oddly unsettled life story. It does make me feel a bit more grateful for my humdrum situation.

I’m very late today! I ended up in Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess all day. This morning I was in the eau fraiche. Tonight for my shower I used the exfoliating shower gel then sprayed on the cooling body spray afterwards paired with the cooling gelee.

It was a warm, sunny day so BG seemed to fit appropriately. I barely wore it last year, so it was nice to pile on the products today.

    Happy long weekend, everyone!

I wore Ava Luxe Heart of Glass for Debbie Harry’s birthday since it shares its name with a Blondie song. It’s a crystalline sweet tuberose, super pretty and easygoing. Tonight I put on Moon Jasmine by Loreto Remsing (L’Aromatica) for Scent Trunk.
