Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, mid June 2022

Posted by Robin on 11 June 2022 188 Comments

Saturday is King Kamehameha I Day and Hugh Laurie's birthday; Sunday is Superman Day, Loving Day, and Anne Frank's birthday. We're marking it all with our usual open thread poll.

Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, your favorite summer-weight tropical fragrance, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

    Hello and happy weekend!
Sotd is tropical fruit salad Zoologist Chameleon.
One of my favourite summer scent is Terry de Gunzburg’s Fruit Défendu (I think it’s sadly discontinued though). It has a bright citrusy opening then becomes this realistic juicy sweet mango nectar. Very good.
A still available fav will be Bronze Goddess. I am pale as chalk but a girl can dream.

I do not have anything like a green thumb but all four of the pots I planted for the balcony are thriving, and with any luck I’ll have a profusion of scent-flowers — candytuft, forget-me-nots, four o’clocks, and nicotiana — in four to six weeks. (I chose flowers that thrive on indirect light, because we have a north exposure and the only straight-on sunlight is early evening for a couple of hours.) This is the first time we’ve had a balcony in almost twenty years, and I feel lucky to have a little space for growing.

Today I’m in YSL Yvresse, post-renaming but pre-reformulation, and it’s so charming.

That’s great that everything is thriving! I sympathize with your need to find part sun plants; my back patio is a cave because there’s a huge hedge trying to hide the school portable that’s just behind it, so I’m in the same boat. Half the nursery is off limits!

As part of the process of moving, I did some research and ordered nine packets of seeds, the ones that would grow in my part of the world (nothing tropical), didn’t require a lot of skill (something I don’t have, to say the least), and were strongly scented (I don’t even much care what they look like). And then I realized too late that a lot of them wanted full sun, but luckily I had four that were okay with indirect sun. Next year I might try to plant the others anyway, just to see what happens, but this first year I really wanted to succeed so I planted only the ones that weren’t quite so finicky. So far so good!

Thanks for the ideas, pyramus! Next year, I’ll look for some nicotiana for my balcony, which gets only morning sun.
By the way, you are smelling great.

My mom wanted her garden to look just so (and she really did have a green thumb, which I did not inherit, and had a way with roses). She grew nicotiana grandiflora in the flower beds at the front of the house: she loved the masses of white flowers (and the hummingbirds they attracted), and I loved the smell of them.

I love patios with scented flowers! My granny, who died decades ago, lived on the 21st floor of her Chelsea apartment in Manhattan. She had a huge patio with incredible views, that she filled with plants and flowers. I loved to sit out there in the sun and listen to the city below.

My mother-in-law was a great gardener, and she grew an oasis around her little mobile home. I hope her daughter, who bought it, will keep it up. She’s a garden lover as well, so I’m hopeful.

Winter daphne grows in shade and partial sun and is pretty hardy. It’s quite good as a plant pot shrub as it has a tendency to die if the roots get too wet. Smells great.

Yay!! Sounds lovely. We were just sniffing nicotiana plants the other day…I did not realize that there are varieties with almost no smell (cool lime green flowers though).

So far my front porch plants are doing well too, but we’ll see what happens when we go out of town. Keeping fingers crossed for my tuberose bulbs.

Good luck with your tuberoses! I bet the smell of the fresh flowers is intoxicating.

As for the nicotiana, it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that every possible variety of flower has been bred for visual appeal with a consequent loss of scent. (We’ve done it with fruit and vegetables: why not flowers?) I’ve been disappointed by far too many pretty but scentless roses and carnations. I genuinely don’t care what they look like (and in fact the candytuft I hope to succeed at growing are very drab): a beautiful flower is a bonus, but I just want them to transport me with their perfume.

    I’m in Ormonde Woman today.

Super excited about my garden –just planted lots of basil yesterday. I also have arugula, Swiss chard, romaine, peppers, tomatoes, scallions, lots of other herbs and garlic bulbs that I planted last fall. And some raspberries in another area. I wish I had lots more space to plant more!!

For Jalapeno: I brought one of my own bottles to the pedicure: Essie Enuf Is Enuf (such a happy summer toes color: a pinky coral). I think my very favorite is Orly Haute Red, but I lost my bottle. Need to remedy that. So there you go – way more than you ever wanted to know 😉 .

When I logged onto NST this morning, no one had yet commented. But I got carried away looking up the history of King Kamehameha and now it’s an hour later 😂🌼🌸🌺 🌴 🏝

Love the photo of the leis—now I am daydreaming of tropical humidity and warm winds carrying the scent of the sea and flowers. It is painful to read the recent/last 300-year history of Hawaii, or that of any indigenous people really. And I find the transliterated names particularly difficult to remember or keep sorted in my mind, but I also feel like it is a sort of duty. Anyway, that is all I will say about that.

Perfume! Last night I got loads of compliments on my Dear Polly. It really is so pretty. This AM, idling with a hot cup of joe and the World Wide Web, I’m in The Favourite. All the doors and windows are open wide, and the sounds of the birds and squirrels is so loud it is almost drowning out the banging being made by men building a fence on the ridge above our house.

We had snow on the hilltops yesterday and it was one of those days where being outside left you feeling chilled. Today is not much better so going for warmth in Smoked Ambergris and a cruisey song from Nick Drake (Saturday Sun) to warm the day. Drinking coffee in bed, listening to the wind rattling the trees, and three hours to dawn….winter. Happy weekend.

Oakland Fresca, and another geographical difference…a sparrow could never fly in and land on my bed because as soon as the weather here is warm enough to open a window, there are too many bugs not to have screens in the windows!

Did the sparrow leave of its own accord or was it work to get it back outside?

Well I am, ahem, an expert on “wild things and other animals that stray through your open windows and doors.” Dogs are supposed to be on leashes, but I have shooed countless out of our living room and backyard (and one pit bull that chased one of our cats upstairs and through all of the bedrooms, leaving deep scratches in our wood floor and a cat that needed valium for two days afterwards–the dog was very sweet to me, but not so much to our cat). We’ve had mice, lizards, squirrels, raccoons, (of course rats!) and a close call with a skunk that almost came in. And birds of every feather. The most memorable was the duck who eschewed the wide open door, and crashed through the glass of our closed kitchen window. . . Hummingbirds are the hardest to chase out. But this little bird–I’m amending my characterization of him as a sparrow, it turns out it was a chestnut-backed chickadee– and I did a three-second stare down and then he politely flew back out.

LOL…useful to have a good stare!

We had a ferret run in once, and various dogs and cats that weren’t ours, but that’s it other than the mice, of course, and a couple bats.

I’ve found that during a caulking session, the longer I caulk the better it looks. So I practice in the garage for a while before caulking the area that actually needs it. I hope yours comes out beautifully!

Update: Foxbins saved my bacon. Found an old piece of moulding in the garage and squirted some of the new caulk on it, just to get a feel for the gun. Turns out that the “biscuit” color I thought would match the pale tan color of the existing caulk and grout is basically white — not the color I expected to see. Apparently “almond” is the color I need … sigh. Mr. G will run out and get some for me later this morning. So the saga continues.

I’m in SSS Bee’s Bliss for what feels like a day in Florida with better temps. The humidity must be 110% because we just did a tiny walk and I’m sweating. 😅 The temp is a much friendlier high 60’s, so thankful for that!

Found a very nice park here that caters to equestrians (should have worn SSS Equestrian!) and has miles of trails available to horseback riders and hikers, dogs allowed on leash. No bikes or motorized equipment allowed, which I appreciate. Very thick canopy too, so it should be one of the cooler places to spend summer days.

    Happy weekend!

I was excited last night to discover I still had a little left in my sample of Bengale Rouge. It had seemed too vanilla when I first tried it, but it had grown on me. I can now confirm that an FB will be a future purchase. It’s definitely an appropriate perfume for the cold and wet day here.

I’m contemplating cleaning the windows. My excuse is that my right wrist is no longer what it used to be since I broke it.

I wore Diorella today, this vintage edt is extraordinarily diffusive, so I walked in its bubble today it suited the weather, sunny with occasional clouds and 21C. This evening it’s Angels’ share which I purchased only because I paid around £40 is for a tester bottle but I’ve grown to like it quite a bit, especially the cinnamon.

So glad you grew to love it too, perfume sisters that we are, it’s a sleeper this way, when I picked it up solely based on the great price I wasn’t that impressed but as often I just had to get to know it better.

If you need more of it I’ll travel to France early sept (I bought my ticket) and could send you a decant then.

Iris Torréfié for another rainy day. Managed to make it out this morning with the dog for a walk before it started, where I ran into the next door neighbors who announced they are also putting their house up for sale this week, and theirs is nicer than mine (wail). The universe is conspiring against me I swear.

She didn’t want to wear a dress so we picked out a cute black jumpsuit with a sheer sparkly star shirt underneath. She wore constellation fake nails and sparkly barrette and sandals. It was fun. She danced like her mom ( swaying, lol) we ate pizza and chicken. Her sotd was Arianna Grande Thank You Next body mist and I wore TM Miroir des Majesteax. A happy day!😊🌞

Hajusuuri.. as you know I am inexperienced with technology. Last night I decided I would jump into the 21st century and for the first time ever use the video recorder on my phone. I discovered later that even though I had it in video mode there was still a record button to press. Nothing recorded. However I did manage to take a few pictures and the school was taking them too. Lol at myself.. I guess that’s what I get for being so stubborn.

SOTD was Chanel No. 19 as we went to a memorial service for our neighbor/ friend’s dad, who was well known in the community. He apparently wasn’t an easy man, and one of his sons delivered a very honest, funny and charming eulogy.

In the category of “what are people thinking?” there was a woman who came into the market the other day, accompanied by a little girl of about 5 or 6. The woman was wearing a T shirt that said in all caps “New York F$#&ing City” (without the edits). Who does that? Not just to wear in public but around a kid? I was horrified. And oddly offended on behalf of my former home.

I’m looking forward to wearing OJ Frangipani soon. One of my favorite summer scents. And I’m fondly remembering Nicolai Eau d’Ete. I went through a small bottle of that one summer.

One of the bad things about living in a van is that I witness/hear a ton of terrible things. People have no clue I’m in there, T-Rex is not a barker, so they have no clue that everything they say/do is being overheard/witnessed. The poor kids of the world! I mean, really, you have denigrate and humiliate a five year old because his shoe is untied?! I think a lot of these kinds of things are perpetrated by men who are probably not the kids father, but it’s often the mother as well. Really shocking stuff. 😢

Returned some online purchases to the mall and replaced them with new purchases. Definitely got my steps in today.

Grabbed samples of Gypsy Water and Infloresence. Already a fan of Gypsy Water, think Infloresence will be a good one based on my initial spray but also didn’t stick around for long so dunno if would purchase.

I did try the Prada Infusion de Rose and it was very nice. I would have gotten a sample of that as well but the area was pretty busy so I just did a test spray.

Have a couple options for dessert tonight. I like to top off a scoop of Haggan Daas Chocolate and Peanut Butter ice cream with a scoop of Black Raspberry and chocolate chip Talanti gelato. It’s a very tasty combo.

I started the day with some Chanel n5 EdT, then added the Prada Infusion de Rose, then Chloe Nomade Absolue (it’s fine), then got Gypsy water and Inforesence all over my hands and arms filling sample spray bottles. Threw some Guerlain Santal something-or-other on the other arm on my way out of the store and when I got home my husband said he could smell me across the room, lol. He wasn’t complaining though!

It’s a good day to set your DVRs…TCM’s lineup is The Ghost & Mrs Muir, From Here to Eternity and Sunday in New York. Sunday in NY is a very dated comedy about dating, but still entertaining with an appealing cast.

I did pretty much nothing all weekend because I wasn’t feeling well and just have a bad case of intense ennui, probably because I’m returning to work tomorrow. Will be happy to start depositing instead of withdrawing all the time, but still…😭 I’ve been buzzing around the new town to look for shady parks, bathrooms, and trash bin locations-you know, the essentials. There is certainly a dearth of trash bins, which really annoys me to no end. Quite a lovely area, though, and I think I must have landed on the “right side of the tracks” vs. the canceled contract that was in a very unpleasant looking area, so that’s my good luck, I guess. It’s very populated and tons of traffic, which makes me a bit claustrophobic. I’m going to try and schedule to work every weekend so I don’t have to deal with the craziness.

Wearing the same shirt as yesterday, hence still in Bee’s Bliss. This has tremendous staying power on fabric. I like it much better after it’s aired out a while. At first spritz, it’s so intensely floral it almost turns me off.

Hope everyone has had a restful and restorative weekend. 🕉

I don’t blame you. I wish they gave people the option of continuing to work from home. If they’ve proven to be dependable for the past two years, why not?

Thank you. I don’t think it’s the assignments as much as it is me. Medicine and nursing has changed so much it’s almost unrecognizable now. I think I’m just done. I’m researching and looking forward to work camping. As soon as I get my camper, I’m hoping to start that for most of the year.

Ooh, will you be a campground host in residence? That seems like a nice job.

That is one position I’m looking at, yes. Hopefully with the NFS.

Well, not sure quite yet. Many moving parts, including people who are in line ahead of me potentially backing out because of the economy/gas prices, etc., which will shift me forward. The supply chain issues seem to be resolved for the most part now. Longest wait will be about 18 months, which is down from the original 24 when I placed my deposit, but could be less…

Right. Good luck, hope it is sooner rather than later.

Hi everyone, I’m kind of absent lately because the cast on my left arm makes it difficult to type–among other things. At least I’m allowed to get it wet, which simplifies showering a lot (no need to wrap it all in a trash bag). I’ve been wearing my sample of Mango Skin by Wilhelm. It has surprised me by how nice it is. Yes it’s fruity but it’s neither too sweet nor too simple. On me it has very good lasting power too. Good for summer and hot weather.

Last night I got ambitious and made lemon risotto. Lots of lemon juice and zest and I managed to get the texture right, very creamy. That was the star but on the side I had quickly browned some shrimp and sugar snap peas in butter and the combination proved to be a great success! Nice contrast of flavors and textures. Patting myself on the back. I can’t do much of any chopping right now but zesting the lemons was about the hardest thing for this dinner.

I’m completely hooked on the Korean crime/police/thriller/suspense drama The Stranger on Netflix. It’s very intense and at times confusing. The plot is full of twists and turns. The two lead actors are so great–so are some of the villains. Can’t wait to watch more.

I hope you’re healing well, and quickly. I’m hoping you have home assistance for things like showering, cleaning, garbage removal, etc..?

Reporting late, but I wore le Parfum du 68 today. Mostly sunny, aside from one rain shower, yay!

Shalimar Eau de Cologne today. And I’ve awarded myself an enabler pin after I mentioned Nicolai Eau d’Ete. Found it on Amazon and pulled the trigger on a 30 ml bottle.
