Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, late May 2022

Posted by Robin on 21 May 2022 224 Comments

Saturday is World Meditation Day, and Sunday is Sherlock Holmes Day plus World Goth Day. Whatever you're celebrating, we've got our standard-issue open thread poll.

Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, your favorite perfume for meditating (or detecting, or expressing your inner goth), whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

I’m testing newish Iris de Gris from L’Artisan today and I must say I enjoy it. It’s an interesting iris scent, very green and vegetal through a prominent sweet pea note and a hint of mint.

The photo is L’Artisan Iris Pallida though as an ugly decant wouldn’t look nice.

Hi all, happy Saturday! I had already planned to wear Kyoto today so I’m on point for meditation day. It’s cool and rainy here and I’m going with a group of friends to see the new Downton Abbey movie, then dinner out, and I thought Kyoto would be cozy and not too much sillage. I haven’t been to a movie since before the pandemic and have only eaten out a couple of times so I can use some calming.

I hope you have fun, and report back on how you liked it if you have time!

I went with the same group to the first DA movie and we had so much fun, but I would have gone to see it alone if I didn’t have a group. Downton is escapism at it’s best!

Happy weekend NST : ) I recently bought a bottle of Ouai hair conditioner and am in love with the fragrance, which is apparently called Mercer Street. Unfortunately, the brand did develop perfumes for its fragrances, but this one has since been discontinued and a search of the web comes up with nothing. I’m wondering if anyone is familiar with the fragrance and might offer suggestions for a similar perfume? Or possibly an online source I may have overlooked that might have a bottle of Mercer Street still knocking around in inventory.
Fragrantica lists the notes as: Top notes of Lily, Peony, Italian Lemon, iris and Orange; middle notes of Magnolia, Jasmine Sambac and Turkish Rose; base notes of White Musk and Orris.
Would much appreciate any suggestions – Thanks in advance!

That’s frustrating! Seems they’ve got many other options out there but not Mercer Street.
I actually love the smell of the one I use Oribe Gold Lust hair oil which is a soft, light & airy jasmine scent. Wouldn’t mind trying this in perfume form.

Long week capped off with a burial yesterday of a dear, long time friend.
Often think we should do celebration of people’s lives while they are alive as it is just amazing to hear the stories and various ways one life has impacted so many. And what an encouragement that would be for them! I suppose milestone birthdays are a good occasion for that.

Still in bed with fresh, hot, cinnamon- spiked coffee. Added a spritz of Guerlain’s Mandarine Basilic and I’m happy.

I’m so sorry you had to say goodbye to your close friend. You make a very good point about celebrating people and their accomplishments while they are still alive. Maybe we can do that in small ways, by giving them verbal affirmations of how much they mean to us. I know I don’t do that often enough.

Good morning! I’m in IA Sundrunk, and as usual, I’m not a big fan of sunscreen scents. Ah well, I’m off to work out and will take a shower after. It’s okay to start over, in so many ways!

I spent several hours yesterday organizing clothes and “filing” them into the closets. Yes, that last word is intentionally plural. I have clothes in a range of sizes from semi-skinny to fluffy…ahem…. 😳

I’m wearing Maison Crivelli Rose Centifolia this morning, which is accidentally CP-appropriate because it would be really good for a meditation session on a beach on a sunny but cool-ish day — for preference, up in the San Juan islands. I’ll get there again someday, I hope.

Lavishly sprayed on SL L’Eau Froide for this hot, humid day in the 90’s.

No plans to go outside at all this weekend. I will spend it deep cleaning and organizing my bedroom.
On my second cup of iced coffee and ready to start the day.

When instructing the very youngest of students, violin teachers often begin with a box violin, to acquaint them with the mechanics of holding the violin before actually putting the instrument in their hands.

And since you mentioned makeup, I’m testing Lisa Eldridge’s foundation today. I actually haven’t checked on it after my sweaty walk! The sample pack of shades I got looked fairly different in the packaging, but it was sheer enough on my face that several of the shades seem to match. Now I’m just confused which is best!

I think I put on too little yesterday, I was testing out the colors on the side of my cheeks and sort of dabbed more on around the rest of the face. It pretty much disappeared after my walk!

Today I’m trying a different tactic, just using one of the colors all over. I love the finish, it’s very skin-like, neither matte nor overly glowy.

I’ve discovered two interesting smell-a-likes recently.

Masque Milano Petra is so similar to Coco Mademoiselle. Definitely a fruit-jasmine-patchouli bomb.

Scored a vintage Ted Lapidus Creation edt, and I adore it. It kept reminding me of something… Dryad! A beautiful classic kitchen-sink type of thing. I’m so glad I discovered this one.

I’m in PdN Vetyver for its snuggly soothing warmth. The sun is OUT so we will get in some walkies and then head out.

We’ve been in a campground for the past several days and have had the entire loop to ourselves, probably because it’s dry camping only. It’s been fabulous! Had a nice chat with one of the hosts who happens to be a retired nurse. She said they are expecting an influx of 70 campers today! Yep, time to pack it up and skedaddle!

    Happy weekend! ✌🏼

No perfume yet cuz I was busy organizing my garage sale…I bought recently the Ariana Cloud body spray as a dupe to Baccarat Rouge and may wear that…

Our house was broken into yesterday afternoon while we were on a walk. Nothing was taken and no one was hurt but it was pretty stressful. The police caught the culprits who were basically kids in dire circumstances. We told them we don’t want to press any charges. From now on we will be locking our front door!

World Goth Day 🦇. More like bad internet connection day bleh. Pretty sure I talked about all things goth on the last World Goth Day here lol. I was goth in younger years..jet black hair etc. Now that I am older…it’s more inner goth lol.

Here is a classical take on a gothic like tune, Sunken Cathedral by Debussy. The title sounds ultra goth too. Lol.

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=levGISzDmjs

Debussy has influenced some of the more modern gothic type music artists. So, thank you, Debussy:). 🎹 🎶

As far as a gothic fragrance..haven’t really found one that takes the cake personally lol. Some liked Midnight Poison for goth..but patchouli doesn’t really say goth to me.

Thank you for that wonderful music. I wish every morning started this way. I was curious that the recording listed Debussy as the artist playing and found this really interesting. I find that ink as a perfume note has a goth vibe. It turns it’s back on perfume ( beauty) norms and can be quite challenging and complex.

Do you have your own connection? My home phone has not worked for over a month…definitely fewer crank calls and having to empty out the voicemail box every 7-10 days. For some strange reason, the DSL part still works so I am happy for the alternative to cable.

It’s freezing outside ( making allowances for the fact it’s only 5 am) wet, windy and probably snow on the hills if it was light enough to see that far. Definitely the coldest of the year so far and to mark the occasion our hot water cylinder is broken so I’m trying to utilise the situation to explore the benefits of taking cold showers. I am anticipating that my skin will glow with health and I will feel the rushing euphoria that usually only comes from standing beneath a glacier-fed waterfall while watching marmots play in alpine meadows. We’re too mean to pay for a weekend electrician/ plumber so I will have to embrace the situation. At least we have power and today I am going to see The Northman at the movies. Wearing Divine Perversion (Hedonik) from Gaynor’s sample box. Really nice leather, not grungy or strong or particularly perverted. Keep warm everyone!

SOTD = Jorum Studio Healing Berry

This was one of my 15% off purchases from Luckyscent. It’s an herbal rose on me. I don’t know what half of these smell like but whatever they are, they blend in well. The notes per the Luckyscent website are: Artemisia, Blackcurrant Absolute, Tayberry, Willowherb, Sloes, Wild Mint, Rose Absolute, Loganberry, Buckler Fern, Violet Leaf Absolute, Raspberry Leaf, Orris Butter, Himalayan Balsam, Cereal Accord

I finally finished my response to the NY State inquiry regarding my income allocation. I read through the information on “telecommuting” and the standards for a home office were from 2006 (!) without any regard to how work life changed during the pandemic. I kept my response simple. Regardless of the outcome, I will still get money back but it’s a matter of having to spend time amending my NJ return. Keeping fingers, eyes and toes crossed for a good outcome.

The SplitMeet appears to be doing good business! I have one more bottle I want to split but will deal with that later as it will be a 7th bottle. In the meantime, wish me luck as I go out into the pea soup heat.

    Hi all,
I’m in PG Naiviris and avoiding sorting and organizing my closets and pantries.

I have a question for you Chanel Exclusif lovers. Oddly enough, I fell in love with Coromandel edp instead of the older favorite edt. I dreamt about and saved up for the extrait, which I received last month thanks to the Paris shopper.

I am so deeply disappointed. Not with the scent – it’s magnificent. But it lasts just 2-3 hours or so. I have Bois des Iles, 22, and 5 extraits (purchased a good 8 years ago) and they last for 12 plus hours.
Anyone tried Coromandel pure parfum? Or have you noticed any change in the longevity of the extraits?

There is a YouTube reviewer who reviews a lot of Chanel (super dacob) he has said that the Coramandel extrait does not last as long as the edt and sits close to the skin. I do not know this first hand as I have not tried it.

Joining many of you in the warm weather today. I walked to the farmers market this morning and worked up quite a sweat! I also cleaned my stove top, cooked, and moved a bit of furniture around. I feel like I”m ready to be lazy for the rest of the weekend.

SOTF is Rose d’Amalfi. I’m quite enjoying this one, I got myself a small decant.

I love that you’re able to walk to the farmers’ market!

I am postponing the stovetop clean up. I have a desk (never been used as one) that needs attention. I may get around to it today, at least half of it anyway.

Spent the day about two hours south in Duncan, going to the farmer’s market, the bakery, and lots of little boutiques. Had lunch in a favorite little cafe. It was so great to be out of the house having fun in warm sunshine. There has been a severe shortage of both fun and sun in my life so I feel grateful.

My meditation scent is Bodhi Tree by Teone Reinthal Natural Perfumes. 🙂

For a suddenly back to Spring-time cool day, EL Knowing, a bottle from 2009. With its rosy and mossy opening, I will enjoy this powerhouse all day to the last animalic and patchouli-rich wafts. It somehow stays out of my top twenty – not sweet enough or a bit too much earthiness in the patchouli? I still love it though. Off to read comments.

It’s a blessed 73 degrees outside today in Houston. It’s cloudy and will rain most of the coming week, which is a welcome change from the hot, dry weather we’ve had this spring.

I’m in a bit of Byredo Rose Noir topped off with Marni. The Rose was competing and losing against the peanut butter granola that just came out of the oven, but the Marni was a nice boost!

I hope all y’all are having a peaceful Sunday. 😊

Yes, the weather is so much nicer today! (Though I was rudely awakened at 3:30 a.m. last night by all the lightning and thunder!) I visited Mom today and was able to take her outside. We sat on a bench out in front and enjoyed the breezes and the pretty flowers. I think Mom also liked to watch the people coming and going. And one of their very kind staff members saw us go out and promptly went in the kitchen to fetch us some cookies–he knows how much Mom loves her cookies. Although she doesn’t make a lot of sense any more she has moments of lucidity, when she seems more herself, and that is wonderful.
Today I’m wearing L’Artisan Mure et Musc Extreme. Sorry for no diacritical marks, French speakers! I’ve had it for ages, maybe a decade or more, but it still smells fresh and cheerful. I used to think it didn’t have much village or lasting power, but now it seems to me it does.

It’s been lovely weather here all weekend – the heatwave didn’t materialize where I am right now, for which I’m exceedingly grateful.
I’ve spent the last couple of days in MH Fleurs de Sel, which has been perfect, since I’m near the ocean. I love this one, it’s such a perfect combination of notes for the summer.
BY the way, I have added a bottle to the splitmeet. 😉

    Happy Sunday!
My second standby weekend for May done and dusted!(people are on leave)
It’s been a Wick fragrance weekend.
Lauren from Wick started a Niche Perfume club, sending out seasonal quarterly perfumes in 15ml format, unnamed. We also had to guess the notes and I was spot on with the Vetiver,Cedar and Jasmin.
There’s also a wonderful clove and nutmeg note, and something she calls Forest Rose.a Wonderful cozy spicy but fresh perfume.Another part of the fun is a whatsapp group she created with all the participants,to discuss and smell and compare notes, and to eventually name it as a group.LoveLove!
    Friday was the Wick *unnamed*.
Saturday Wick Night Call, one of their first releases,a smoldering rose perfume.
Today I went with the spectacular Reine du Volcan, the sesame oil note is BEYOND wonderful.
I enjoy this local brand so much, and I also love that she is branching out,but not too fast or too far(UK look out for the brand pretty soon!)
NOT AFILLIATED,but such a fanboy of Lauren and the Wick team!
    XO’S

Be still my heart, two sunny days in a row! I still have spots available in my Zoologist split. Everything but Bee is available. I’m working in the yard again today, the rain has made weeds grow taller than me. I’m wearing Santal Exotique.

Rain has made gardening a non-starter here, and the weeds know it! But we are supposed to have have – YES – two sunny days in a row, so I hope to weed and finish planting the veggies Monday. My little starters are looking kinda leggy and tired of being in the potting medium!

Sweaty and gross from the garden.
I actually opened a bottle I bought. Irresistible. It smelled so different when I actually sniffed it, it was kinda disappointing. Another La Vie or Black Opium.
I can’t remember who, but if I bought Orris Root, wanted a split. I’m saving 10mls for you!

Looking for a Palo Santo perfume. Any ideas?

Split meet! I had forgotten, but just put up a few.
