Thursday scent of the day 5/19

Posted by Robin on 19 May 2022 170 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy National Notebook Day! (Celebrate by writing something down in a bound paper notebook, remember those?) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm taking community project points in Hiram Green Slowdive. Ten minutes after putting it on I thought wow, why don't I own this? But of course during the 4+ years it took me to decide, Hiram Green stopped making 10 ml bottles. Money saved, again.

Reminder: on 5/20, for World Bee Day, wear a fragrance with a honey note or wear a fragrance inspired by wildflowers, or celebrate World Bee Day in some other way. (We did a honey project in 2017.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Up with the larks (or kittens, rather) this morning, and scent free. I might try to find my last remaining droplets of Botrytis for the CP tomorrow. If I can’t, I’ll probably go with spritzing some Eau de Hongrie on a tissue and wafting it in front of my face a few times. All the little furballs are well!

Hi Lisa – I’m in Viktoria Minya Eau de Hongrie today and likely tomorrow as well. Hope you find your Botrytis! (The cry of the perfumista: why didn’t I buy that when it was available?) Please give all the little furballs a kiss from me.

Exactly right — why didn’t I buy a full bottle AND a back-up bottle of Botrytis when I could? Now I can’t find it anywhere, sadly.

Kittens all give you a nose boop right back!

I think they are about 6-7 weeks old. They are still quarantined in the bedroom on the second floor, but I kitten-proofed the stairs this morning, and I plan to let them explore a couple of other rooms soon!

I love Slowdive and also have no idea why I never bought a 10 ml travel spray of it. Every time I see a bottle at a store I have to put some on and swoon ((and bonus points for naming this fragrance after a pretty f*ckin cool band)

I’m in Musk Lave by Areej le Dore. Sort of a Middle Eastern interpretation of Jicky, if there was such a thing. I love it.

    Good morning.
    Sotd is Nightingale.
I tested Hummingbird and Chameleon the other day because I wanted a Spring scent (I know, it’s almost Summer 🤣) and I honestly can’t decide. Decisions.
Currently drinking genmaicha to match the Nightingale geisha label sticker.

It was a tossup between which of two scents I wanted wear tomorrow (not doing Miel de Bois because it’s my go-to honey scent and I *do* have others). The runner-up, which I’m wearing today, was Profumo di Firenze Tabacco, a burnished honey-drenched tobacco. I don’t know why I don’t wear this a lot more often: it’s really gorgeous.

    Hello!
I am in Rose De Chine by TF
I also have a sample of Rose D’Amalfi, I tried this one in the department store, but will have an opportunity to try on the skin at home.
So far, I like Rose de Chine. My favorite is still Rose Prick.

Its dreary here today, Not sure I am going to attract any bees!

I am accidentally compliant. First perfume was SL’s Nuit de Cellophane, which as I too often repeat is a totally benign, cheerful jasmine and white flower with fruit scent, despite its edgy name. And then later this morning (I’ve been up since 5 🙁 ) I couldn’t resist a lavish spray of Bouquet de Hongrie (thank you swapmeet partner!). I am a veritable walking wild garden and fruit orchard. Come to me little bees!

Also, want to share that I spent a little time yesterday reaching out to Guerlain in the US and in Paris. I got the same response: “I regret to inform you that the 30 ml extract of Mitsouko is no longer available.” The clerk at BD’s had said it was a supply chain issue, and that it would be available again at some time–but he might be misinformed. I hope not.

I made some enquiries about Chamade extrait a couple of weeks ago and was informed by a Belgian retailer that the 30 ml bottles are no longer made, apparently you can only order Bee bottles of extrait the smallest one being 125 ml costing around €900. And the bottles are only available on order. I imagine the same goes for Mitsouko.

Oh interesting. And now I must hunt down a sniff of the reformulated version. I have heard the same about the reformulated Mitsouko extrait as well–but goodness knows how to get one’s hands on it. I am assuming the bottle being sold by Harrod’s not the newest formulation.

    Hi friends!

    I am in Elephant&Roses.

We are ok, the cold is finally gone. 😀

We had a very busy and exciting weekend with the wind orchestra. I made liters of coffee! (30? 40?) The concert was very nice too.

Today I finally received my invitation to start my classes with SheCodes. So my coding journey is about to begin. Exciting!

Also, I have been attending online courses of Swedish for three weeks. Still unable to talk to local people in their language, but I have learned a lot of useful phrases and some basics of grammar.

Hi, all, as I posted above I’m taking cp points in Viktoria Minya’s Eau de Hongrie which is a lovely soft honey fragrance.

I have a question for the folks who do splits and/or decanting– I wasn’t happy with my last batch of decant bottles purchased from Amazon. Where do you all like to buy? Bestbottles.com looks good but they have a $50 minimum order amount (possible but not my preference). Other suggestions?

I’ve had mostly good results using Riverrun. Their smallest size that has a sprayer is a bit funky (sprayers were a bit hard to press and the caps are too loose), but their 5 ml and above have all been very good. They also make small dabbers, but I’ve never ordered any of those.

I’m in Arabian Oud Kalemat today. It has a distinct honey note throughout and it’s one of my all time favorites. Plus, the longevity is astounding! Someone on Frangratica described it thus: “ It’s like pure, honey-pot honey. Or a fresh honeycomb.” I wouldn’t go that far but the honey is definitely there, even to my untrained and quite average nose.

We’re watching the rain continue to fall. When I stayed at the fishing access spot down river there was a Whoop-Whoop-Whoop! alarm. Had no idea what it meant and asked this dude pulling up his waders who happened to work for the Washington River Management Company. He said it was a an alarm that sounded when the river was running unusually high “or something like that.” 😳

Anyway, we moved to this park that day. I’m sure there are dams and all kinds of other things they do to manage water levels, but I decided to skedaddle.

I desperately need to do laundry and grocery shop and really wish it would stop raining so I can get that done without having to worry about the rain interfering with the lap sealant setup on the roof.

I’ve been contracted with another hospital, although I had to go with a different agency, which is a real pain because I have to do a ridiculous amount of credentialing since they won’t accept the stuff I did with my previous agency. Oh well, not my money and happy to have the job! It’s a critical need rate, which is more than I expected. Every cloud has a silver lining they say..! I do feel bad for all those nurses who got into traveling during the pandemic trying to make an extra dime. Hope they didn’t burn their bridges, because jobs are not plentiful this summer. I’m predicting it will pick up again in fall/winter, but rates are lower than pre-pandemic rates…🤷🏻‍♀️

It’s difficult to find short term housing (contracts are generally 13 weeks) and the nurse has to pay everything up front, including any pet fees, etc. The cost per month is usually higher as well for these short term rentals, and you may have to pay for electric, utilities, etc. Housing is outrageously expensive and it’s almost impossible to find anything <$2-3000/month. If the contract is cancelled, the nurse is SOL all that money. In my case, I think they were doing the bait and switch thing- advertising and contracting at higher rates, then slashing pay last minute thinking the nurse is already in town, has already set up housing, etc, and will generally settle for that greatly reduced rate because the cost to them if they don’t is exponential. Nope. Not me. And in fact I told my recruiter that I will NEVER work for that hospital system, so it’s been removed from my list for future contracts. It’s just bad business and its a red flag to me. I can tell you this: for all the whining and crying hospitals do about not having funds, you can take a look at their numbers as it’s public info and see management, CNO, CEO, blah blah blah that make tremendous annual salaries but on TOP of that make “bonuses” in the MILLIONS. Mean while, it’s the patient who will ultimately pay the price because of poor staffing, crappy equipment and supplies, or not enough equipment to safely get the job done. Hospitals are money making organizations, bottom line. And, in my case, they didn’t cancel my contract, I did after they told me the new rates (I made more as a staff RN 6 years ago🙄). So, the onus is on me and that’s fine because I’m not out anything other than doing last minute COBRA to continue my benefits until they kick in with the new contract. Staff RN’s and others in general complain that travel nurses “make so much money!” And that is because, according IRS guidelines, you MUST be able to prove duplication of expenses, hence the higher pay. You are paying for TWO households. If you are audited and you can’t prove this, you will be owing the man THOUSANDS of dollars plus the INTEREST on those dollars. This happened to someone I know and she owed many tens of thousands of dollars to the Man. Since I sold my house, I am 100% taxable and lose over a third of my pay to taxes. More than you EVER wanted to know, but people have a lot of misconceptions about travel nursing.

Fascinating, Deva! The for-profit rehab places and senior care places nickel and dime the residents but do not provide adequate care. I absolutely had no clue what to expect but we found ourselves having to constantly monitor what they did or didn’t do. Imagine having to clarify the institution’s policy on bathing versus what they actually did – big difference and we had to insist and asked the private duty nurse to make sure it happened.

A big factor is that in the “old days,” meaning pre-computer everything, the majority of the nurses and CNAs time was spent on patient care. Documentation, other than a few things, like code situations, was not the focus or so time consuming for the nurse, doctor or cna. Now, the focus is 50-60% looking at a computer, interacting with a computer, and or trying to get the computer to work. Everything on the computer is trackable, so if you miss something, you will be getting “notified.” The higher the level of care, the more documentation required. It generally takes me a total of 2-3 hours of documentation per patient for the level of care I generally work. Multiply that by 3-4 patients and you are front of a computer 6-9 hours of your 12 hour shift. That’s were the focus, attention, and time go now. I’m not anti-computer, but it has gotten to the point it hobbles our ability to function efficiently.

And meant to say the staffing in rehab facilities is atrocious. 30-40 patients, one nurse and maybe two CNA’s ..!

Yes, agree on the CEO pay and so do others. And I hadn’t though about the bait and switch w/ housing etc. but sadly also makes sense. 🙁

Yes, the travel nurse agency makes the bulk of the money from the hospital/nurse contracts. These C-Suite folks get bonuses for keeping costs down. That means fewer employees all around. Kitchen staff is bare bones in most places. High up on the list of pt complaints is the food in hospitals. Housekeeping is another constantly short staffed area. The people that actually DO THE WORK are almost always short. Meanwhile, there are managers, assistant managers, and so many other “managerial positions” that exist that spend all their time on non-patient related work, or avoiding patient related work. Hospitals are very top heavy. Most nurses and CNAs really do care about patients, management cares about money. Huge shift in focus. There’s a lot of gaslighting by management and really, I have never seen so much friction and antipathy between management and staff. One of many reasons I wanted to travel is to avoid all the BS. Once during huddle, the entire staff was told that yes, we were working short staffed again, but we needed to look at our co-workers who called off because that’s WHY we’re short. Trying to shift the onus of responsibility to the staff for adequate staffing is just one of many crazy things I’ve heard. 🤪

Hope all works out with the new hospital. My sister works in hospitals in Seattle, and I know it can be trying, to say the least. She was ready to walk away from her career for something, anything, in the private sector 6 months ago, but she got a new manager and things improved. But everything constantly changes and they’re always cutting.

I searched on Fragrantica and found more scents with honey notes than I had expected. It’s given me a few more options. I’m wearing Mechant Loup now. I’ve had this bottle for about 15 years and it’s still pretty full! Never noticed the honey in it before. I’d like to find some sort of wildflower perfume for tomorrow but am not sure whether I can.

A very nice neighbor just volunteered to make me some honey-oatmeal bars with a chocolate crust and I gladly accepted her offer! She said “they’re relatively healthy.” I’ll be sure to report in!

I’m a notebook person and never leave the house without a notebook and fountain pen. In fact, I spend hours thinking about paper weight ( ink mustn’t bleed through so I like 150 gm with a bit of bite) , dimensions, spiral vs. bound, weight of notebook, white vs. ivory paper, and when I go on trips I end up with two notebooks: one for writing, one for drawing. I have four old suitcases in my bedroom that are filled with 30 years worth of notebooks. My current favourite is Stillman and Birn, Epsilon wire bound as the covers are firm enough that I can write on my knee ( handy in waiting rooms) and there are only 50 sheets so they are not too thick and heavy , 6×8 inch. I also have a couple of handmade notebooks with arches paper. Always blank pages. I hate thick notebooks ( the ones with 190 sheets) as you can’t write into the bound edge comfortably. My travel ( daily) fountain pens are usually aluminium ( Lamy, Kaweco) though I also carry a Sailor Progear slim . I like pens to weigh under 20g so I don’t get cramp. There…glad you mentioned notebooks!!! I will wear honeyed Journey today and I have a Guerlain Golden Bee eye palette for extras.

I think they are fine with Biro, gel pens and pencils but fountain pen ink shows through the pages ( unless you buy the heavier sketch book paper) and wet ink also smudges quite often. Same problem with some travellers notebook paper, and Midori. But Moleskine are nice and light and compact. I like the semi- hard cover options as they put up with daily use ( more so than the straight cardboard) but have a bit of flex and character ( compared to hardback).

Lately have been so into honey scented candles. I’ve gotten most of them from TJ Maxx and Marshalls, and they are a great alternative to floral scents for spring. I usually do pine related candles for winter, so switching to honey has been really fun!

Also, there’s a candle company called Nette that makes an amazing honey candle called Queen. Honey, hay, heliotrope. Double wick with i think hand made ceramic holder. It’s Diptyque prices (but also Diptyque quality!) so not exactly buying them in bulk, but it is really awesome. I am a bit obsessed with it!

My brother had an animal steeplechase situation ages ago. I think the critter that caused the uproar was a mouse, and he had 3 dogs and 3 cats at the time (or was it 2 cats?). They ALL went after the intruder. I don’t remember how much collateral damage it caused; this happened quite a while back.

The way the told the story had me in stitches laughing. He admitted that it was funny in retrospect, but he was far from amused at the time.

Comparing/contrasting two sandalwoods by my pretend perfume boyfriend, Mathieu Nardin – Perris MC’s Santal du Pacifique and Kierin NYC’s Santal Sky. The Perris is more sandalwood dominant, and leans woody; the Kierin has a good dose of a saffron note along with the sandalwood and leans more floral, and a bit sweeter. Not quite sure how to explain this but the Perris is clear/transparent, whereas the Kierin is milky. Both have some of that sandalwood pickle thing.

Correcto! I was booked on a trip to Germany and Switzerland but I don’t want to travel so far, be on many flights and could possibly be stuck out of the country. Besides, inbound air travelers have to be tested for COVID whereas all other modes of crossing into the U.S. are exempt. One of my cousins said they did not even check any of the COVID paperwork but of course one does not want to run afoul of regulations.

Laundry twinning again! I started late. I’m hoping to get 2 loads done tonight.

          The second load never happened!
It will have to keep until tomorrow. . or the next day.

Thank goodness dirty laundry doesn’t have an expiration date! 🤣

Do you have kids, too? I know washing clothes seems to be a full time, never ending chore for you. Can you get a large capacity washer so you get some non-laundry time?

No kids, but a husband and 2 cats.

A lot of the stuff I am looking at now is seasonal stuff, like blankets. I don’t want to put dirty stuff in storage.

And I do have a large capacity, front-load washer. I stopped doing loads when I noticed it was taking far too long for loads to dry. That was the start of the whole bird’s nest saga.

And yeah, I seem to do a lot of laundry. Not sure how 2 people can make the stuff pile up the way we do.

There are only 3 of us, but the boys make mounds of laundry, it’s just unreal.

I hear that. Sometimes Mr. Jalapeno will wear a shirt for 2 – 3 hours, then plop it into the wash.

I’m having a hectic day off with errand running. I made my first ever chicken spaghetti casserole. It was a hit with the kids. I tried to buy hamburger today but $14.00 for 2lbs was just unacceptable. Gas went up another 10 cents too.
My sotd is Coco edt from a sample. I keep toying with the idea of getting a bottle but honestly I prefer the edp so unless I find it cheap (ha!) It’s off my list. ( for now lol)

The cost of EVERYTHING is unacceptable! 5.30 for regular unleaded? I mean come ON! 😡

Wow! 7 bucks a pound for hamburger?

Now I’m afraid to see what it will be for me the next time I go grocery shopping.

Taking CP points for the copious amounts of Nuxe’s Reve de Miel I’ve been using for a few days: shampoo, shower gel, conditioner, lotion. I’ve been away with my husband and those were the toiletries provided by our hotel. They smell wonderful, with strong honey vibes.
