Wednesday scent of the day 5/18

Posted by Robin on 18 May 2022 164 Comments

It’s Hump Day and International Museum Day. (And don't forget: the splitmeet is coming up on Saturday.) Birthdays: Gertrude Käsebier, Frank Capra, Big Joe Turner, W. G. Sebald. What fragrance are you wearing?

It's another gorgeous spring day here, and my fringe tree is in full bloom. I'm in Ormonde Jayne Osmanthus (lovely but not as lovely as the smell of the fringe tree).

Reminder: on 5/20, for World Bee Day, wear a fragrance with a honey note or wear a fragrance inspired by wildflowers, or celebrate World Bee Day in some other way. (We did a honey project in 2017.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I haven’t been wearing scent because I’ve had a cold and been at home all week. Back at work I decided to wear something easy, which for me today means L’Eau Mixte, from my bedside table.

It’s cool and rainy and I have a ton of household chores to do, so it’s a Shalimar day, an edt from the 80s. Hoping for motivation.

Sotd is TF Rose D’Amalfi. I wonder if it will layer well with JM’s Red Roses because the rose is not strong with this one. Hmm might try it later.

A windy rainstorm today, so good thing I’d done a fair amount of walking the last couple of days. Working on a sample of Invictus Victory, which has been surprisingly pleasant, considering my general anti-dude perfume stance.

OK, have never smelled Invictus Victory, but it’s about the last thing I’d expect an anti-dude perfume person to find at all pleasant!

Back to grey skies and rain today, boo hiss! Yesterday was just lovely though, and if you happened to be lounging in the sun, it got very toasty very quick.

I wore a bit on AG Ninfeo Mio last night to bed but it’s gone now, but it was a delightful change from all the warmer scents I’ve been wearing. I’m having some mild fragrance ennui these past few days. Not sure what I’ll go with today and may just go with nothing at all. I think it must be the weather. We had a lot of walkies yesterday and a bit of swim time, so doggo is pooped out. My thighs are killing me from going up and down the ladder a million and one times. Today just may be a Day of Rest.

Well, last minute decision. It’s Fils de Dieu today. This always hits my sweet spot and is pretty much guaranteed to lift my spirits!

Hope the weather is better wherever you are. 😎

Just a leak around the vent/fan. Hoping I fixed it yesterday morning. I need to let it set up for 24-48 hours so I’m still sitting here with my fancy blue tarp over it. The next rain will be the moment of truth. Hope you’re having lovely weather there. ☀️

The weather here is about the same as Deva’s — sunny and warm yesterday (so nice that I went out and wiped down the picnic table while deluding myself into believing that we might have dinner out there), and grey, cold and rainy today. I think I jinxed things with the cleaning, much as one does by washing one’s car. Oh well, that’s spring in the PNW. 😂 I’m in TF Noir Pour Femme for the moment, but will most likely switch to Knize Ten post-shower — that one has stolen my fickle perfumista heart … for now.

After a spectacularly bad work day yesterday, today is a bit better. I was wearing MFK Petit Matin, but it’s gone by now. Maybe I’ll pull out something for the bees this evening.

I’m still dithering over which perfume to buy myself as a consolation prize for having mono, but I just can’t choose. Sometimes I think the dithering is half the fun.

Helloooooooo NST. Had a wonderful time in NY despite some stomach ailment–not flu, not food poisoning, no COVID–which led me to cancel some planned fancy dining and now has me undergoing a zillion tests (arghhh!). In perfume news, it was a slow day. I purchased a bottle of Epine de Rose (Mizensir) that I might slightly regret. Loved it in the shop, but now it seems fleeting and a little thin. Inoffensive and pretty, I am spraying with abandon. Oh well. After wearing Dear Polly loads, cuz I had a sample in my purse, I realized I love it. So even though I am not much of a tea scent person, I purchased a bottle online when I got home. My other purchase was a 1 0z bottle of Amalia from Fueguia 1833, an over the top girly floral jasmine that makes me happy. I had planned on replacing my finished Mitsouko parfum, but apparently there isn’t a bottle to be had in all of the US–problems with the supply chain, or so said the clerk at Bergdorf’s. Also, I learned that due to new IFRA restrictions, L’Heure Bleue parfum will only be sold in Paris (again said the clerk, so you may have better info).

Wearing Isabey Prends-Moi. I was hoping for a chocolate-raspberry-rose-lipstick over the top valentine’s day kind of vibe, but this is rather tame. I don’t dislike it, but I need to adjust my expectations.

To be fair to the perfume, it is not a disappointment. It is just more subtle than I had anticipated. Misnamed, perhaps, since Isabey translates Prends-Moi to “Take Me” and I assumed such a commanding name would mean a commanding frag.

Also want to mention … perhaps instead of a whole wall of painting, you can frame 4 “pictures” (parts of wallpaper maybe) to represent the seasons or some other theme and you can rearrange them to make a new view. I have seen hand-painted walls that could have used TLC when new.

I haven’t looked yet but the 50mL bottles are included. I have no clue on the bottle pricing but perhaps it’s not too far off from being perfumath free. 😉 Besides, I’m sure Donatella would understand because after all, you HAVE to reward yourself for moving! All that packing, etc. etc.

I noticed that Dusita offers free shipping from Paris, but does not remove the VAT, so you are effectively paying for the shipping by paying VAT which is not owed on export shipments.

Oh interesting! Here I was thinking we’d save on sales tax. But is VAT already included in the price? I’ll have to investigate.

Yes, I checked Dusita’s price against First in Fragrance’s price, Dusita charges the VAT but FiF suppresses it so it’s cheaper (I place one large order a year with FiF to get free shipping).

Interesting! If VAT ends up being > $40, I will say sayonara to the deal. Thanks for the heads up!

Hi friends! It’s been a while, but just wanted to let you all know that I’m alive and well. I’ve been through an excruciatingly difficult period of PTSD-induced insomnia and general fragility, but I’m doing much, much better at the moment. But, weirdly, one of the effects of all the things I’ve been feeling and dealing with has been a sort of distaste for perfume or strong scents in general — even just imagining spritzing on something from most of my collection feels like turning up a radio to a painful volume. The only scents I’ve been able to tolerate are ultra-light, ultra-simple things like Malibu Lemon Blossom and Beach; even citrus colognes feel like Too Much Fragrance. I’m very much hoping this particular state of affairs will pass, and I was actually thinking of wearing a tiny hint of Slowdive today, which would be very CP compliant!

I hope you’re all doing well!

Sorry to hear about your difficulties! I think the sensitivity will pass as you move toward balance. I wouldn’t push it, and there’s nothing wrong with gentle, quiet perfumes. When I’m feeling a bit fragile, I always go for soft scents. Or even no scents. Sometimes a nice roll on perfume oil or perfume solid really fits. Hope you continue to mend and are able to enjoy your collection to its full extent whenever you’re ready. ✌🏼

I’m wearing Songes today for doing laundry. I cleaned out my (home) desk yesterday and was amazed by all the old stuff in it–paper manuals (remember those?) for long-gone computers and appliances, business cards from places I don’t remember, and loads of little notes and to-do lists that somehow got stuck in there. Now there is a lot more room and I can find what I want!

It was Paris Roses Enchantées today, a long gone Paris flanker and it was fittingly spring-like, those flankers were good, now it’s all Black Opium flankers at YSL, sigh. This evening it’s Angels’ Share because I have a tester bottle purchased last year for a great price, around £44 IIRC. It’s good, I get boozy tobacco from it but it’s not the right season for it.

Cartier L’Envol which is interesting enough but fails to float my boat in a spectacular way. It’s one of these fragrances that I should love but don’t. Fortunately I don’t own a bottle just a large sample, like 10 ml. or so.

well I didn’t pay a penny for it. It was given to me when I bought something else (not Cartier): a nice box with three small bottles of Cartiers, I think La Panthère, Carat and L’Envol. I’m going to give it to someone who will enjoy it.

Hi all. I got good news yesterday from my doctor: my leg is strong enough now that I can do without my walker and my brace, and can begin driving again. Wow! I truly wasn’t prepared for all this, thought I had a ways further to go. Naturally, after sitting for three months in the garage, my car wouldn’t start today. But a friend is going to come help me with it tomorrow. I will make a transition now from in-home therapy to outpatient therapy, and have gotten an appointment for next week with my previous therapist (she helped me after both hip an shoulder surgeries before). I’ll be glad to go back; as the doctor put it, they “have more modalities” to help me continue making progress with my leg. It still hurts like crazy, I’m sad to say.

My SOTD isn’t CP related: it’s Musc Ravageur. I found a sample and someone wore it recently, which inspired me. I’m going to have to look around and maybe do some research to figure out what to wear on Friday for the CP.

Glad you are back on the road, and I’ll be hoping for continued improvement! Regarding the CP, I was surprised how easy it was to find honey notes in my collection! I don’t consciously seek it out, but when I started teasing out notes in several favorites, there it was.

    Song of the Day: https://youtu.be/UIE4UjBtx-o

Sigh. Why are things never easy anymore?

One of the baby birds either fell out of the nest, or was hiding behind it when it was removed yesterday afternoon from the dryer vent. Guess who woke me up at 6 this morning? And hadn’t stopped chirping since?

So I called the company back. Thankfully the guys were able to return this afternoon and get the last baby bird out. I asked to see this one. That little feathered face looked *SO* ticked off!

Wonderful, blessed peace and quiet has returned. Let’s hope it stays like that!

SotD enjoying cozy wafts of Miel Sauvage, from Hajusuuri’s split. Fragrantica says the notes are “Honey, Bergamot and Red Pepper; middle notes are Sandalwood, Jasmine and Agarwood (Oud); base notes are Incense, Tonka Bean and Patchouli.” I clearly smell honey, then general woodiness, sweet floral incense and clean patchouli. It’s damp and rainy here; cool enough to have the windows open, and that seems to be helping my scent bubble. I dreaded an appointment today with a new family doctor. But we seemed to click, and I was relieved to get that over with. I did wear *several* sprays of Miel Sauvage to the appointment, but what with masks I don’t think it was noticeable. My mask did not hide the fragrance from a skunk who must have sprayed (or met his end) near the front door of the building. The parking lot was redolent, and little puffs of skunk followed people in as the wide automatic doors opened and closed!

I was quite disappointed at the lack of service at The Zoo. I was excited to get Dangerous Curves. I placed the order in mid- March, and should have received the product in early April; however, the company indicated an issue with the labels and that the perfume will ship in two weeks (by the beginning of the last week of April) and the rest will mail in 2 more weeks so end of the first full week of May. I followed up mid last week, didn’t hear back and followed up on Friday. I heard back on Monday with a “we’re looking into it”. This morning, with no other news since the email on Monday, I followed up again and basically said if there is no update, I want a refund. Well, lo and behold, an email was sent saying it will be another 2 weeks. Guess what? I wrote back and said I’ve lost interest and I want a refund. I’ll check tomorrow to see if it hit my account. I provided 3 reasons why their customer service was atrocious and to let Christophe Laudamiel know I was severely disappointed. Ugh.
