Something bright was shining in my eyes this morning as I backed out of the driveway. It was the sun!🌞 It’s gorgeous out with not a cloud in the sky. Unfortunately I’m in my office without a window today, but at least I know the sun is shining!
I was up early for a first appointment of the day dental cleaning before work. I know I scheduled the appointment with my regular hygienist that I’ve been seeing for years, so when somebody new came out to the waiting room to get me I got an immediate pit in my stomach. I already have lots of anxiety when it comes to the dentist so any stray from routine throws me right off. But! It went well. Whew. Rewarded myself with my favorite chai afterward.

Only rarely purchase from Chanel’s site…usually a limited edition lipstick once or twice a year. Lo and behold, Chanel sent me a GWP without my making any purchase: a Coco or CocoMad sample (left at the gym), a sample tube of Sublimage eye cream and a blister pack of one of the new Rouge Allure Extrait refillable lipsticks. Color me surprised!

Greetings everyone! Continuing my exploration of roses in Etro Shantung today. It describes itself as blackcurrant, lychee, incense, cedar, cashmere, musk, rose and peony (whew!) but to me this is just rose, a lovely rose that lasts well but doesn’t get thick or cloying. I remember trying Etro Manrose around the same time, but can’t recall what that one smelled like…well if I bought this I must have had a clear favourite! Good wishes to you all for today.

I’m interested. As a rose lover, do you further refine your tastes or can you detect diverse roses, e.g., Turkish, Bulgarian, French, whatever? I’m always fascinated by how some perfumes highlight the exact type of rose that’s been used in their formula. I can smell differences among roses in a garden, but I have no idea about how these different “types” (varieties? species?) of roses smell. At least, not unless someone smacks a label right on one that I’m about to sniff!
Etro makes some very nice things to sniff! Pity they are so hard to find here anymore… 😥

Hello, all, it’s my birthday and I’ve just announced my retirement at work (in August) AND we’re leaving for a wedding in California wine country so it’s a pretty great day all around. I know there’s still lots of awful stuff in the world, but I’m planning to stay happy today at least.

Just chiming in…my son tested positive for covid yesterday afternoon. He is vaccinated & boosted and seems to have a reasonably mild case so far, but it’s upended all sorts of plans and so I’m running behind — still have not read all of Tuesday’s comments.
We are doing our best to keep quarantined in our house but who knows!

Eek! Fingers crossed that he recovers quickly and that the rest of you dodge it. A friend’s daughter visited them about a month back and tested positive a couple days before she went home. Neither parent ended up with it. (All, including daughter, were vaxxed and boosted.)
Don’t worry about falling behind! Many of my friends’ vaxxed teens & twentysomethings have contracted covid, all are fine now. Hope he rallies quickly.
Hope he recovers quickly! My husband’s case last fall was pretty mild, he just had the sniffles and a low fever for a few days (and lost his sense of smell/taste for a month). I never did get it; hopefully you won’t either. We were both vaxxed but not yet boosted (boosters weren’t authorized for our age group at that point).

The weather is lovely and sunny. I have a stand of lovely, fragrant narcissus that was flattened by rain. Hoping it springs back up when it dries off.
No perfume to report, as I have a massage later today. I’m new to massage, as the only experience I’ve had was a brutal shoulder massage years ago. It was in a group setting – everyone else thought it was fantastic, and I thought it was super painful. Many years later, I’m finally going to try it again…

Oh no! Usually the masseur/masseuse asks if the pressure is OK and they ought to have done so. And they can start off light and apply more as they go along, once your knots have been loosened (or whatever it is).
I don’t usually go for massages and when I do, I just do the chair massages. One masseuse got too enthusiastic and caused my shoulder blade (whatever the behind the shoulder part is called) to bruise. The bruise took quite a long time to disappear so I was not a happy camper.

I’m in the dregs of my travel spray of FM PoaL…plunk? Is that right? I’m very sad to be done with it, but perhaps it’s for the best, as the husband hates it. Or maybe I just need to get another travel spray or decant; this one lasted me years.
Today is Mayhem Day <3 it is the day my cat Mayhem died in 2019, after living with cancer far longer than the vet ever thought he would. This is a bad time of year for us and our cats; our other cat, Mischief, died a year ago last Saturday 🙁 We celebrated her life with dairy and meat products while telling stories of how silly and sweet she was; I think we will do the same tonight for Mayhem.

Most of the scents he likes are ones I find boring. He likes a lot of Jo Malones and the cleaner/simpler Dames 🙂 We agree on a few, like l’Eau de Tarocco, Histoire d’Orangers, and a lot of the Hermessences! Those got outsized play during the pandemic.

Beautiful cloudless days and so still that the leaves don’t even rustle. And the stars are incredible: still getting a kick from seeing Jupiter and Venus ( and Saturn) as bright as two led torches every morning. Thanks for the dentist good lucks yesterday. My tooth had a crack beneath a filling which runs into the pulp. It has been bonded and refilled and hopefully that will work, otherwise crown or extraction may be required. At least it’s less painful today. Plus I am going to the Botanic Garden for a walk later: the autumn colours are hanging on. Wearing sunset hour though it’s not yet sunrise. I like it: nice and easy , not too sweet and unfolds rather than fades.
Agree those planets are putting on fabulous show – in the USA Midwest we seem them around 5am.

I went for a cleaning a week or two ago and my dentist took a few photos to show me cracks in two molars b/c of my powerful jaw as he phrases it. 😉 Eventually I will need crowns. Then he said to the dental hygienist who is new to their office something like…see, it’s not always decay…implication being as people age I suppose…and I wanted to say…hey, I’m in the room….ehaeheh talk about me and powerful jaw when I’m gone🤣 He’s a very nice and good dentist though that I have been seeing for at least 15 years now I’d say.

No, I didn’t buy anything this time. I really was in a tiny village in a very rural part of France. The closest slightly bigger city was Paray-le-Monial and that doesn’t have an interesting perfume shop.
I did buy a lot of nice food related items like nut oils and vinegars. There is a really nice shop in the Beaujolais that sells an impressive array of oils and condiments. I always try to go there whenever I’m more or less near it.
Mind you I did get some lovely linden soaps that were made by a local nurse.

Glad you had such a good trip. I love Beaujolais. We stayed there for 2 weeks several years ago and had such a great time. The people are incredibly friendly and the landscape is beautiful.

TF Rose d’Amalfi today.
Slept poorly last night. I usually sleep well but maybe one day a month, or even every other month, I wake up around 2 am or so and then am up for a couple hours. In those hours, I am convinced work and life are in dire straits. Not really a panic attack but definitely persistent anxious thoughts. But I as I type here the following day I wonder what I was so upset about….I kind of know logically but there’s definitely something w/ irrational anxiety in the middle of the night like a fever dream or something and I dread when it happens. To clarify, I sometimes walk up to use the restroom too and can go right back to sleep but other times I wake up and my mind is oddly alert and I think…oh no, here we go…the anxious madness! 😉 I tried to pour over review on Fragrantica for part of the time but it was tough and without the normal joy.

Super quick check in since I have a meeting in a few minutes. Day 4 of Cartier for me since I started Sunday. Baiser Vole EDP on left arm and the Essence de Parfum on the right. I prefer the vanilla of the Essence, as I find the EDP fairly dull and too laundry clean. Yesterday was Carat, which is a good background perfume that I needed while having a very tired day. Today is tired day 2. Hopefully tomorrow breaks the chain. And I’m taking a break from Cartier tomorrow and will wear my last of theirs on Friday.
The Essence is beautiful, you smell great, and I like the effervescent edt much better than the edp.

Now a day later, my work day will be full of meetings! Every other Thursday holds a lot of them for me. At least I broke the tired chain and am feeling alright this morning.
I don’t have any Cartier unless in some samples that are too hard to locate. I’m wearing Arielle Shoshana Saturday. I got the three of her scents awhile back and tried them but forgot what I thought and so I’m going to try them again. This one goes on just like straight cat pee to me! I said “grapefruit” to myself right away and looked up the notes. Sure enough it is there, but I noticed passionfruit is listed first and wonder if that might be the real stinker here in my nose’s experience. I honestly can’t stand the smell of fresh passionfruit–though I like it in teas and adore the blossoms. They grow often in gardens here. Anyway I’m giving it a longer try to see if that icky note goes away and something better comes into focus instead.

I couldn’t fit in a reply to your comment above asking me about rose varieties and what my nose can discern…short answer is no, I can’t define/detect one rose over another so there is no refinement here to report, only enthusiasm! Your question feels like something to aim for though – to gain greater discernment of a lovely flower – so thank you for it. I hear you on grapefruit’s bad association though (Guerlain’s AA Pamplelune did that to me, and how) and I am sorry to hear that passion fruit might be another suspect…Hope you find yourself in a cloud of something more palatable very soon.
I’ve noticed that my older sample of AS Saturday has a diminished passionfruit note. When I first got it, that was front and center. The sandalwood base pops up sooner than it had in the past, too. So maybe stash that sample away for a few months?

SOTD = back in 31 RC EdT. Yeah, I am on another one of my perfume monogamous streaks. It will probably end on Friday, since I do have a couple of Cartier perfumes. The question is, which one will I pick?

You smell great! Never thought about matching AP with a rose lotion. It plays well with jasmine lotions, and probably an incense one, if such a thing exists.

If you’re looking for straight-up orris butter, this is it. I did not detect any development but it could be because I used 2 droppers’ worth on my hair. Nice. The SA gave me about 2mL in a dropper bottle (I bought a bottle of Oud Ulya).
I got an inquiry from NY State to explain my income allocation. I may have mentioned that I ended up owing NJ and expecting $s from NY state. My employer kept us at our work location prior to the pandemic and I could never get the tax piece calculated properly. Anyway, I do nave to respond to it and hopefully it will be accepted. I did it in favor of NY state so let’s see what happens.
Yuck, tax stuff.

Overall, too expensive for its simplicity. Oud Ulya is not oudy nor too rosy so that was my pick. I got about a 20% discount.
Woke up early because….sun! Still chilly out, but was fine with just a hoodie. First spritz of Fiori di Capri for the season.
Morning gathering and then nice lunch with a friend. Brought home a raspberry bread pudding with toffee sauce. Yum. Only downside is realizing that I will need to tell doctor that, after 12 days of antibiotics and warm compresses, my eye (tear duct) infection is not better. Still inflamed. Sigh.
Yay for raspberry bread pudding (that sounds delicious), but boo hiss for that stubborn eye infection!
LL Labdanum 18 for me today. We’re headed into a week or so of temps in the upper 90’s and I’m just dreading it. 😟
