Friday scent of the day 4/22

Posted by Robin on 22 April 2022 207 Comments

It's Friday (at last) and Earth Day (the 2022 theme: Invest In Our Planet). Our community project for today: wear a fragrance with a narcissus note, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I went with Vanille & Narcisse, from L'Occitane's 2013 La Collection de Grasse. My aged sample is now more vanilla than narcissus, but I tried.

Reminder: on 4/29 we're doing Picture Challenge, edition 7: Hilma af Klint, The Ten Largest. Wear a perfume that matches the picture(s) of your choice from this series that depicts the stages of life.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m in Complicated Shadows by 4160 Tuesdays, listed as having notes of “Sandalwood, Shade, Narcissus, Iris and Irony.” It’s so subtle and beautiful, I wish I would have bought a larger bottle! Otherwise my favorite narcissus scent is Roberto Greco Porter Sa Peau.

Gearing up to go on my first vacation in many many years, a post-divorce jaunt through Central Europe (Poland), leaving next week. Will be doing much fragrance buying!

Have a safe and wonderful trip! Envying you a bit, as my heritage is Polish and I have never been, hoping one day to get there and explore the villages of my grandparents.

Yes you should definitely go! I always hear that people love visiting Central Europe over the more popular Western Europe locations too.

I had every intention of wearing Guy Laroche Fidji today but the Aura bottle caught my eye, so I chose it instead.
Looking forward to the swap meet! I have always used electrical tape over nozzles and decants for mailing and would like to try parafilm, can anyone recommend some from Amazon? There’s a lot of choices. Thanks!

A different recommendation: plumbers thread seal tape. Works really well and you can even find it at hardware stores or Home Depot.

Electrical tape, never used that but have seen several decants where ppl used that and it had slid off. I also get parafilm from the bay..haven’t had any complaints thus far.

Ostara from a decant. I sometimes wish I had bought a bottle, and then realize I have had this decant for several years and it will probably last for several more.

Jumping in early today to say hi, and playing along with the CP in TF Jonquille de Nuit. The name says jonquil, but the notes say hyacinth. I probably couldn’t tell the difference, and it doesn’t matter – I love this one!

I own nothing narcissus-y or even narcissus-adjacent, although I did own a small bottle of the immense Chloe Narcisse back in the day, and it was just as narcotic as it should be. Today I’m in one of my standbys, Old Spice, which for good reason has been around for the better part of a century: it’s wonderful.

Le Temps d’une Fête for me. I don’t know how I never realized that there’s a narcissus note in it; now that I’m looking for it, it’s hitting me in the face. I guess this is one where I’ve always liked the whole of the composition, without really thinking hard about the notes.

Found my mini of Chloe Narcisse for the CP today. This is a kitchen sink frag, and it is ancient, so I’m getting more stone fruit than narcissus, but that’s OK. I’d love to hunt down a fb of this and the Lagerfeld Chloe, but I worry about how those old bottles were stored. I guess that is always the risk of vintage.

On the other arm, to guarantee some narcissus, I’m trying Hermes Narcisse Blu, thanks to katsura. I get a dominant, savory soup/bay leaf note in this one, but I had a sinus exam this morning, so maybe my sniffer is off.

Had to wake up early for my doctor’s appointment; drinking pu’er to compensate for the lost hour of sleep. The beautiful weather is helping.

    Alert;

DAwn Spencer Horowitz, the dean of Indie perfumers, and creator of about billions of scents, from retro elegance to new age is having a flash sale.
I have no business or other connection, but do intend to make purchases of scents sampled.

I am in London Prosady’s Jacinto Jonquinth. It has a sharp first moments, and then settles into a very green spring floral. A good alternative to muget for those early spring longings for something light and lovely.

    Hello and TGIF!
Sotd and CP points in Youth Dew. Love it.
Every time I think of narcissus I think of Ostara, one of the perfume that got away. I have been meaning to buy it then it got discontinued then hard to find.
Currently drinking osmanthus oolong to continue the floral theme.

Yes, we made it one piece! Luckily the weather doesn’t pay heed to the forecast, which was for 2” snow on the pass. Nope, bright and sunny with dry pavement! We lucked out, but it’s a hair-raising downhill for sure. It has a steep grade, but the real problem is all the hairpin turns on the way down. We just put it in low gear and toodled down slowly. Only touched the brakes twice. ?

No, still in Moby. The truck/trailer combo won’t happen for at least another year. I just put a down payment on it to hold my spot in the production line. It’s direct from manufacturer to consumer, so I will eventually connect with them and complete a “build sheet” which specifies my customizations. Then production will start, will be finished approximately 3 months after that. It’s a process. ?

I’m wearing La Haie Fleurie du Hameau, essentially a white floral bouquet with a jonquille note. I think it is utterly lovely. I remember buying the last bottle from a shop in The Hague some ten years ago, and how lucky felt for getting it.

Leaving for a week in France tomorrow. I’ve just finished packing my decants, teas will be up next.

Morning. I have just finished a book called The Jane Austen Remedy by Ruth Wilson and thought of you. It’s a memoir but really a book about rereading Austen that formed part of her PhD ( in her 80s) on the transactional nature of reading. The idea that reading books, and rereading at different stages of your life provide new insights into your life experiences. She reads in a kind of ‘spiral’ so looking from text, to life, to text etc. Anyway, it’s a terrific book on Austen ( available as an E Book) and interesting on the process of reading.
      Have a happy holiday.

I gained an entirely new perspective of Austen after studying traditional property law. I know read her as novels as about economic transformation and the impacts of money and power .

I’m not sure that I have anything with a narcissus note, and I’m too lazy to do any research this morning. Instead, I’m going with Absolute Aphrodisiac, which is a very nice vanilla. SO glad it is Friday, and as soon as I’m done with my morning meetings, I think I’m going to take the afternoon off! Feeling rather stretched thin, and I could use some down time.

Not participating in the CP today. SOTD is Cassis, Rose & Sandalwood by Dame. Very pretty. I think this perfume house has some very nice scents and Jeffrey is very generous with samples. He even gave me a rollerball for free due to my order being delayed. Very accommodating. I think that says a lot for his customer service ?

Foxbins bought Goldfield & Banks Sunset Hour and I cought travel sprays of Scents of Wood Cypress in Oak and Leather in Bourbon. So nice to meet up with her again!

Inspired by Old Herbaceous, I’m in Vol de Nuit 1996 edt. I never tried to find narcissus in this one, so that’s my challenge to help get to know it. I also have a 2017 Bee Bottle that I’ve liked better because it does seem “sweetened.” The ’96 one so far has not been my style, but maybe that will change! I don’t know about the newest one.

Not the biggest fan of narcissus here. Resampling Misia by Chanel. Which I really didn’t like when I first tried it as I disliked how earthy it was but this time around..not bad. Chanel just does perfume right.

Ah, interesting! Is this a new/recentish sample or tester? I have an old edt sample which I find bright and very beautiful, but what I actually bought recently is a new bottle of the edp, which seems quite different to my (very old) edt. It’s still lovely though, but not as bright and clear-softer and warmer somehow. It didn’t strike me as earthy from either bottle but maybe I just lack the vocabulary to do justice to this comparison…glad to hear you’re enjoying it this time round!

In Bois Sacre, so a CP fail. But golly I smell amazing!

My bottle’s sprayer was a mess. ScentBar encouraged me to try to pull off the sprayer and decant. I can’t say the sprayer removal went well–the glass snapped immediately. It was a clean snap and my attitude is that the chances that any micro glass chips will make their way up the new spray tubes and out the new sprayers is pretty small (won’t spray perfume in my eyes as an extra precaution!). The new bottles look lovely, if I say so myself. https://www.instagram.com/p/Ccme5N6O6L3l0ugaZw2hkvqZqJV39r3j_Eh3kk0/

(I made my Insta account private because I started getting too many random men with no posts following me–which was just weird–so if you can’t seen the pic and want to, just ping me on Insta.)

It seems appropriate for the cp to Keep-It-Simple on Earth Day, and I’m doing so with Dame Perfumery Soliliflore Narcissus perfume oil. Although I’m not much of a floral note lover, wearing this for the first time today I’m really enjoying it. A little dab’ll do ya with this one; it’s rich and creamy and slightly indolic, more complex than its ‘soliliflore’ designation, and quite long-lasting. Very nice!

Today’s community project is perfect because over the years we’ve planted many varieties of daffodils and, since they’re one of the few bulbs our neighborhood squirrels won’t dig up and eat, they have proliferated nicely and are in full bloom right now. Although today is grey and rainy, yesterday was a warm and sunny day and their bright shades of mostly yellow were a welcome sight after the miserable spring weather we’ve had thus far.

Later I’l be topping off my SOTD with Ted Lapidus Creation, an absolutely glorious fragrance from the mid-1980’s. It’s bold and brash, with more notes than you can count (including narcissus), crosses all genres and is a beautiful celebration of nature’s rebirth in spring, a favorite of mine in April when life springs forth. I ❤️it!

We finally got to the nursery this week and I’m looking forward to planting my window boxes with pansies tomorrow, which is forecast to be warm and sunny again. Looking forward also to a small concert with our favorite Chicago folk troubadour on Sunday. Got my second booster this week so I feel safe again, luckily only aftereffect was a sore arm the next day.

Wishing everyone Happy ? Day with a wonderful weekend to follow!

Wearing Ostara today, which has a faceful of narcissus! I sadly have a cold (not COVID, thankfully), likely from my husband coughing in my face. I did NOT miss getting casual colds from the Before Times. The distancing during the pandemic kept me nicely protected from such small-scale infections, and my immune system has grown weak. Reintegrating myself into the general world has its risks.

I’m fragrance free today. It is cool and rainy today, so something cozy sounds lovely, but I’m short-handed in that category.

I was sitting at the kitchen table yesterday and glanced through the sliding door and, to my horror, two plump rats were on the other side. Happily sitting there on the doormat as if waiting for me to invite them in to share my coffee and sandwich. After what seemed like hours they slowly ambled off and disappeared into a crack ( tiny) in the wall of the house. Just thinking about it makes my heart go thud thud. That’s Earth Day for you! They must be eating the feed I put out for the sparrows. I feel sorry for them as we will have to kill them. Ugh, rats. They give me the creeps.

You can just trap it/them and set it loose out in the woods. It’s much easier than killing them, no matter what method you use. It’s always a mess to clean up. And if you use poison you run the risk of killing anything that may eat the dead rat, including dogs. You can rent or buy steel traps, take them out in the woods and release them. If you saw two, you probably are hosting 10x that amount.

I think it was allo who mentioned that Green Spell has narcissus. I’m on board with that! I have a 7mL travel spray.

This morning, just outside of Penn Station, the sidewalk between 33rd and 34th was littered with deflated balloon garbage and it almost looked like someone was protesting Earth Day.

Jacinth Jonquil blooms best on me in the heat of summer but even then what it evokes is May. Still exploring the house but have enjoyed everything so far.

They haven’t made JdB in so long that any you found would be deeper than it was, probably. Mine is far more floral/sweet than Synthetic Jungle, and has more of an old fashioned feel…it is nearly a soliflore.

Another gorgeous early spring day for me with plenty of sun and the barest hint of cool in the air. Strangely enough, the cats did not take advantage of the sunny windowsill this afternoon. ???

Doing my part for Earth Day by using Easter ham leftovers to make dirty rice for dinner tonight.

SOTD = BF Au Dela Narcisse, from the Sample Stash. I have maybe a spritz or two left in my sample. I had several choices today, but one perfume bottle I was interested in stubbornly refused to be opened this morning. I will try again with that one later.

We have a screened porch adjacent to both the living room and family room where the cats can sun themselves in a protected space.. ?? and ?sit by the window or door and wait for Mom to let them in or out and seem to do that often when the weather is yucky. But when the sun is shining on a beautiful warm day, they’re not interested. Cats!!!?

        Silly kitties! ??

Mine were much more interested in the kitty cat heating pad today. We had the patio door cracked open, so I suspect that the house temp was a little cooler than they would like.

One of mine decided she needed to sit exactly two inches behind me all day today. ? Almost kicked her by accident a half dozen times. Cats!!!

I’ve had a few “stepped on kitty by accident” episodes lately because one or both of the cats have decided that it’s OK to be underfoot in the kitchen! Sheesh.

I’m on team Ostara today and heading out for a long walk that’ll take us to a Mexican restaurant on the water for a late lunch/early dinner (linner?). Trying to take advantage of this beautiful weather and a day off work.

It’s raining cats and dogs here.
After a quick search I found I have nothing for the cp. I went with Prada Candy Night. It fits with the weather. I realized today that it smells like a perfumed tootsie roll.

Not CP compliant – I’m wearing Pacifico by Snif. I bought it on a whim, and it’s turned into a favorite easy reach.

This week has felt about 7000 years long. So happy it’s the weekend!
