Something that smells antique

Posted by Robin on 14 March 2022 39 Comments

While you don't want your perfume to smell too young, you also don't want it to smell too old. "Something that smells antique leans more toward overtly mature, reminding us of a 'grandma's' fragrance," says Fitz. "Women today do not act or merely resemble what 65-year-old women of the past looked like. They are bold, confident, and embrace their age and femininity."

— Embrace your age, yes, just be sure you don't smell overtly mature. For more advice, read If You're Over 65, Don't Wear This Scent, Experts Warn at Best Life.

I probably should say I agree on the “candy” type perfumes. At 63 I don’t want to smell like candy. However, I was SMH at parts of the article too.

I wear what feels comforting at the moment…I don’t wear perfume to project any message whatsoever to other people. So these articles always crack me up.

In this case the inherent contradiction between “embrace your age” and “try not to smell old” just struck me as particularly ridiculous.

          Exactly! So silly.

Lol, that’s the spirit! I’m going to wear purple, wear vanilla and shake my cane at these obnoxious whippersnappers when I’m 80.

SMH. I can’t begin to parse this tripe. Older women should *be* bold (unlike all older women in human history!) but not *smell* bold, lest they um, get noticed, or something.

Chanel marketing must be in a tizzy since Chanel No 5 takes the top spot for old lady perfumes that old ladies shouldn’t wear.

I had to take some deep breaths and remind myself that the internet doesn’t forget before posting the following response: both my grandmothers were bold, confident and embraced their lives. And they always smelled great and stylish in Jicky, Chanel No5 or anything else they chose to wear.

Can I just make one giant HOOHEY on that whole article! What a bunch of crap. Wear what you love, no matter what your age. If someone wants to wear Brittney at age 65, who cares? To imply that you become too old for something is frankly insulting. Maybe you age out of a favorite yourself as your tastes change. Or maybe you don’t because you still enjoy it. Who’s business is it anyway?

Joining others in SMH, deep breaths, and explanations of hooey. Makes me want to bathe in No. 5 and then go for a very long hike, waving as I pass the 30-somethings checking their phones in the woods.

Because god forbid you should ever do anything that would make people think you were any older than 24.

As I never-endingly tell people over on Reddit, wear what you want (in moderation, none of this five-to-ten-sprays nonsense). Doesn’t matter if it’s cheap or expensive, men’s or women’s, summer or winter: if you love it, wear it. Period. Life is *way* too short to concern yourself with these trivial matters: take your little pleasures where you can find them. There’s no perfume for you in the grave.

Incredibly narrow minded, “stay in your lane” type thinking. Why would anyone limit their expression by following advice like “Don’t smell too young for your age and definitely don’t smell too old” . I wonder what age we should smell in order to not offend with our presence?

Omg, yes. All I could think while reading that cr*p was WTF? I certainly wouldn’t want to offend anyone by wearing something sweet that someone somewhere might think I shouldn’t wear as an older person. Or wearing something that made someone think I was “old.” Maybe I should get a facelift as well?

What a load of Ascention Wellness c***. Can this lady not find another less insulting way to push her healing crystal perfume bs?

What I find hilarious is her “accent to love” is a complete sweet bomb…strawberries, vanilla. I guess by her own nonsense only the young can seek love. Yeah, what a load of horse puckie”.

Fabulous example of “What insecurities can I play on so that I can sell my product?”

Totally! Which is, ironically, very “antique” in itself! Those vintage adds shamelessly playing on women’s insecurities to sell them stuff. I don’t think we see that very often nowadays.

I believe I’ll join Oakland Fresca, bathing in Chanel No. 5 and wafting great clouds of it toward the whippersnappers. Let’s see: bath oil, body shimmer oil, body lotion, bath powder, extrait, and eau de toilette. That should do the trick.
