Thursday scent of the day 2/24

Posted by Robin on 24 February 2022 166 Comments

Happy Fat Thursday! It's also World Bartender Day and National Toast Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Demeter Gingerale for Crackerbox Palace, 1976, admittedly not my favorite George Harrison song but the video always makes me smile.

Reminder: 2/25 is George Harrison's birthday. Tell us a favorite George Harrison or Beatles song and wear the fragrance that matches the song. (Adapted from a suggestion by Old Herbaceous. We did a similar project for John Lennon in 2020.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Bonus watch: the video for Crackerbox Palace, directed by Eric Idle of Monty Python. Read more in 45 years of George Harrison's song 'Crackerbox Palace' at Far Out.

    Good morning.
    Sotd is EL Pleasures Intense.
I just showered but am too lazy to blow dry my hair completely so now I am a little cold and I am huddled next to the heater with a mug of ginger spice latte.

One of the things I hate doing most.
I recently purchased one of those rapid dry hair wraps which do an OK job of absorbing the water out of hair but having lots of hair it still is more effort than I’d like.

I’ve often wondered if springing for a pricey Dyson makes long-term sense for those with very thick hair. I know I’d be tempted, because I get impatient during the 5 minutes it takes me….

Several years ago I went to a spa that had Dyson hair dryers in the locker room you could use if you gave the attendant your driver’s license and a credit card. I was miffed at first but understood why after using one!

I have one. I bought it a few years ago when my hair person used on one my hair. takes one minute or so to dry my hair.
          Excellent on cleaning windowsills.
Went out to see friend for dinner. Was so cold along beach had puffy coat on.
SOTD post shower will be Chergui.

I’m in Chanel no 18 again. Just about ready to thunk the sample.
A week from today I am headed out of town for a 2 day conference. An actual in person conference! No Zoom! I am so excited. Plus a hotel room all to myself for one night. Heaven.☺️

Yesterday my husband told me that there was a piano out on a frozen lake near us, and sure enough there is.

Hope someone brings it in before the ice starts to melt!

On this bitingly cold day, SL Fourreau Noir, a gorgeous warm complex black-licorice lavender thing. Every single time I wear it I think it’s my favourite Lutens, although I think that about most of his scents while I’m wearing them (see also: Chypre Rouge, Un Bois Vanille, Douce Amère…).

    SotD = Mon Precieux Nectar

Dabbed from a dwindling decant, I’ve worn it often, and the evaporating angel’s share sweetly scents my perfume cupboard.

I’ll pair this one with George’s Give Me Love. I love this perfume, and though it is sweet, it feels meditative to me.

Hope everyone enjoy’s this thankful Thursday.

CP-compliant (and wearing one of the new vintage sample bottles I got): vintage Halston, for “All Those Years Ago.” It was my mom’s perfume, and she died not long after this song came out. She’d be happy today (she was a teacher and constantly pushing for us to get into the best school we could, given the circumstances of being in the military and in the middle of nowhere), because after a slew of private school rejections, Ockeghem Tween got into our first choice school, the public arts mini school. It was iffy as her second audition was nothing but sight reading, and she was nervous, and it didn’t go well. Apparently the band director already knew he was taking her, I guess.

I have to say thanks to Robin for this CP. I had never really dug into George’s post-Beatles stuff, other than the things you hear on the radio every so often. (I think “I’ve Got My Mind Set on You” put me off in high school, similar to “China Girl” putting me off Bowie in elementary school; both since reevaluated.) I listened to “All Things Must Pass” last night, and loved it.

Hi fragrant friends! I’ve been AWOL for a bit, dealing with some horrible sleep/health issues, but thanks to some chemical intervention I had an okay night last night and feel halfway chipper and functional today. I let Littles pick out my perfume — he voted for a rose, of which there are many, so we sniffed through a few and he chose Imogen Rose, which actually suited my perfume mood perfectly. It’s a well-aged solid that’s lost its baby-powder notes and just hugs the skin as a lovely warm, pink rose with soft edges and carnation undertones.

I hope you’re all doing well!

Happy Birthday, but sorry it was marked by such human tragedy. I won’t say anymore because, ya know, rules. I hope you’re able to find a way to celebrate yourself today. As Walt Whitman wrote:

Song of Myself, 1 [I Celebrate myself]
      Walt Whitman – 1819-1892

“I Celebrate myself, and sing myself,

And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.

I loafe and invite my soul,
I lean and loafe at my ease observing a spear of summer grass.

My tongue, every atom of my blood, form’d from this soil, this air,
Born here of parents born here from parents the same, and their parents the same…”

I SO wish my kid would be given this as a poem in her speech arts competition at school, but every year they turn the screws tighter and now they have to select their poems from a small handful: “Charge of the Light Brigade” (which all the boys will do, and have done in the past, even though they’re not supposed to repeat), “Caged Bird” (which we chose on our own in the past), Emily Dickinson (this year it is “Because I could not stop for death” but kid has done “I started early / took my dog” in the past), and Robert Frost “The Road Not Taken” (she did “Stopping by Woods” in Grade 2). I managed to sneak in some Mary Oliver in Grade 5. I love all these poets, but seriously, can they not come up with anyone else? E.g., Whitman?

They should be able to choose their own poem! It seems rather dictatory (not a real word but you know what I mean!) to not give them a choice. I mean, they could give “guidelines” but do they have to be so inflexible?

I have not matched anything to GH this week, loser that I am. However, I ‘m matching quite well with Fat Thursday and Toast Day, not so much Bartender Day. Partial points, maybe?

I took the easy way out and reapplied Ummagumma today because it’s so GOOD!

The “blizzard,” such as it was, has departed and we have a couple of inches of white on the ground, but that will soon disappear under the blasting sunshine and warming temps. Well, not that warm. The predicted high today is 36*…The most annoying thing about the weather has been the howling winds (literally rocking my van like a cradle) the past few days, but that thankfully, has traveled elsewhere.

    Stay well, y’all!

Philosophy Fresh Cream Soft Suede – cozy.

Finished reading Station Eleven, which I enjoyed. An easy, non-linear read. Sounds like the TV series deviated substantially from the book.

Moving on to Cold Enough for Snow by Jessica Au. And gathering tax stuff. Ugh.

I really liked “Station Eleven.” I read it in early 2015, just before we moved to Germany, and there was a temporary apartment we lived in there, in a giant, deserted block of “Hochhäuser” (high rise apartments) in August during 40C temperatures, that totally brought that whole feeling to life.

I opened a box of decants the other day and came across Grossmith’s Shem-el-Nessim, which autocorrect wants to call Shem-el-Nessie. I will forever think of this as my Loch Ness scent. lol It is suitably opulent for a cold and sunny after a snowstorm Fat Tuesday.

Still pondering what to wear tomorrow…

An unsettling/troublesome Thursday, for sure. Ukraine is in my thoughts.

It was also “Cat Wrangling Day” for me. Sweet little Spooky kitty was scooped up and plopped in the cat carrier for her trip to the vet. She’s lost some weight since last year, which is troubling since she’s so skinny as it is. At least the weather held off on the sleet until the trip back from the vet.

SOTD = Chanel No. 5 L’eau EdT. Needed a comfort scent that also had “Get ‘er done!” vibes.

Casmir today for a very cold day. Lots of sleet. I will have to go in to work tomorrow since main roads will probably be OK. Luckily, my husband is a teacher and so he’s going to be home because the schools will still be out and so he can let the dogs stay in and be warm and cozy. Our next house is going to have a doggie door so they can go in and out at will.

It’s been a dispiriting week, for many, many reasons… After a damp and chilly walk — I felt I had to get out of the house, no matter what — in late afternoon, I came back to soak for a while in a nice hot bath. In jammies now, with a small glass of wine to keep me company, I’ll read today’s posts. I found a few Ex Nihilo samples from Lucky Scent, which I’ve been trying out. (At least the samples vials from LS are ones that I can open and use; don’t get me started on complaining about the Ex Nihilo manufacturer samples!) I have on Devil Tender right now, a soft powdery rose with a bit of a sweet Turkish delight vibe. I can smell the cedar in this, but it behaves itself and remains cedarish. (Weirdly, cedar seems to transform itself into hay for me in scents like Arielle Shoshana Friday, blocki For Walks, and Gucci Mémoire d’une Odeur. Wonky nose…)
