Thursday scent of the day 1/20

Posted by Robin on 20 January 2022 225 Comments

It's Almost-Friday, plus the International Day of Acceptance, National Cheese Lovers Day and Penguin Awareness Day. Birthdays: Lead Belly, Joy Adamson, Barbara Jordan, David Lynch. RIP Gaspard Ulliel. What fragrance are you wearing?

I tried but failed to find any Fahrenheit. I'm quite happy all the same in good old Dior Eau Sauvage.

Reminder: on 1/21, for Christian Dior's birthday, wear a Dior fragrance (this is a repeat from 2014).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is from the Dior Winter 2021-2022 campaign.

Scent twins! Can’t go wrong with Eau Sauvage, although I *am* going to be that curmudgeon and say it’s not as good as it used to be in the eighties, when I had my first bottle — and it’s more than possible that the eighties version wasn’t as good as it was in 1966. But we play the hand we’re dealt. Even recent Eau Sauvage is better than most of the stuff on the market.

Go big or go home in Dior Poison,an early 90’s “vintage” bottle. One of the best tuberoses out there I think!
    Happy Thursday!
    My weekend starts NOW.

Poison gets a lot of hate (because like so many other eighties things it was oversized and overused), but the eighties/nineties vintage is one of the all-time great scents. It’s amazing, and you smell terrific (as you know).

Good thought…I also wondered if maybe, since I hadn’t used it in a while, some small amount of juice was stuck up near the splash portion of the cap, and only a tiny bit went off, but that was the part that I got.

Hello everyone! Wearing a wonderful green tweed skirt suit for a long boring day at work. Also wearing my very own vintage Dolce Vita from maybe… the late 90s? I have two half-used bottles, as well as a few empties. My mother really loved this one on me so bought me bottles regularly, including for my eighteenth birthday. Today is my brother’s birthday so I broke out the vintage. Allo asked about the current Dolce Vita yesterday… well, it’s different to this ancient brew of course, but the current perfume is very very good (compared to other current Diors) and has the old warmth and spicy sweetness without being heavy, thick, or cheap. Good wishes to you all for today.

Thank you for your thoughts about the newer version(s) of Dolce Vita.

On a side note, this is all so timely because I hadn’t known that this is a Pierre Bourdon fragrance. Then recently Persolaise posted his interview with Gabe Oppenheim about his book The Ghost Perfumer which is about Bourdon’s history as a ghost perfumer for Creed. The story revolves around Olivier Creed’s use of some of Bourdon’s formulas without giving him credit or promised $$ compensation. Needless to say, I’m looking forward to reading the book.

Oh oh I hadn’t heard of this story (Persolaiae is wonderful but I’ve cut down my internet time in general so my other blog reading is very intermittent now) so thank you for the reference! About Bourdon: it was when I read Turin and Sanchez The Guide a few years ago that I found out how Dolce Vita had a connection to Serge Lutens via Bourdon. That made me try Feminite du Bois for the first time (which, 5 years ago, in its then-current form, smelled a lot like my vintage Dolce Vita). I’ve just checked my copy of the Guide and they hate the newer DV, but my newest bottle is from this year (only available in 100mls unfortunately) and I think it’s good (I can’t wear the current Dune, for example, which is another of my prized teen memories. Wow. My mother had excellent taste in her gift-giving!). Well worth a try if you can test it, I’d say!

He did make a swooning-with-pleasure face, so I don’t think he meant it in a bad way. 🙂 I can see what he means, too — there’s a sharpness in the opening, and something not entirely unlike the smell of a damp log on the forest floor with licorice ferns growing on it.

Hi!! I so wanted to share what I wore yesterday night but the news of Gaspard Ulliel’s passing made it feel inappropriate…
Today I am in Chinatown. Wafting my beautiful sweetness!!
Yesterday morning (to my dirty physical work) I enjoyed House of Sillage Cherry Garden.
Yesterday evening (after a good shower) I wore nothing but Shalini Jardin Nocturne (+PJs of course).
I could write a poem about Jardin Nocturne by Shalini if I was talented. It is the most intricate perfume I have ever smelled in my entire life. It is crafted like a fine jewelry piece (just the scent itself nevermind the gorgeous packaging). It really is like a delicate yet classy platinum ring with the highest quality diamonds. Many other fragrances even niche ones are more reminiscent of fun but fashion jewelry next to Jardin Nocturne. Definitely Jardin Nocturne and Swan Princess are my two most Holy Grail of perfumes.

Smelling like a Fancy Lady in Grand Bal, even if I look like a slob in sweats and fuzzy slippers, lol. Why not.

Yesterday’s scent was Balade Sauvage (Dior does like the word ‘sauvage’ don’t they). And the day before was Spice Blend. I could keep going on Diors for a while.

I’m still chipping away at re-populating my newly organized office closet. Trying to make sure that what goes back in is stuff we really want to keep. The hard part comes soon, as I have to make DH go thru *his* things. There will be whining. “Awww, wife, do I have to????”

        Is it endearing?

My sister frequently calls her husband “husband” instead of using his name, and I find it disconcerting. I don’t think I’d like to be called “wife”. But maybe the delivery matters…I cannot imagine my husband saying that in an endearing way 🙂

I think, as you said, that delivery matters. I imagined it being used in a mock-Shakespearean sort of way, and that it could come off as charming. But the key thing would be not to over-use it. Perhaps it’s the frequency with which your sister uses it….

The vacation clean out started this morning. I am starting in the kitchen. So far I have completed 2 drawers and 1 basket. It’s mostly old paper stuff. I found an old address book that hadn’t been updated since 1998.

It’s so hard for me to get rid of somethings like cards or kid’s artwork. Pieces of paper that my mom had scribbled something on. I’m being as ruthless as possible though. The worst part is the basement which I do a little each year.

My Dad kept some homemade cards I’d done as a kid for the rest of his life. I cried seeing them in a box of his personal effects last year.

Happy Birthday Lead Belly! What a huge influence he was to musicians of every genre. One of my favorite songs is the cover of In The Pines by Mark Lanegan. His voice is perfect for this song- all whiskey, cigarettes, and the rending of the human heart. If interested:

Wearing vintage Dioressence today — I love it so much. Saving my vintage Miss Dior EDT for tomorrow, in honor of the sister Christian Dior loved so much. I need to get the recent book about her (and apparently just as much about the era) by Justine Picardie. Catherine Dior was an actual heroine of the French Resistance; she was captured and tortured by the Nazis, survived a concentration camp, and returned home to Paris to become a florist. She was the youngest of the Dior siblings.

Ah, I have this! Early Christmas present from Mr Dolce. Haven’t read it yet but it does look really good, and the author is a proper fashion journalist and editor as well as a really good writer and biographer in general so I have very high hopes. It won’t be a cheerful read though.

Hi, all. I’m wearing Nez Ambre a Levres today since I mentioned it yesterday in the Daily Lemming chat. And speaking of lemmings, all my current lemmings are for vintage stuff – including lots of Dior: Miss Dior, Diorella, Diorama and Dioressence. I still hope to come upon these at a garage sale some day…

    In Dior Hypnotic Poison.

Very annoyed about one of my cousins, her husband and their 10 year old daughter who live overseas and arrive in New York yesterday. After almost 15 years of not seeing them, they knocked at our door around 9pm last night and yelled: SURPRISE!!! As much as we love them, we do not really welcome those serious unexpected visits. My mother just had an incident in the bathroom and I was helping her. I worked late and had just come back home and was very exhausted. Mom and I were both shocked, uncomfortable and my mother was pretty anxious after they left an hour later. I told them that it was better to have dinner together at home tonight. Now, they called few minutes ago to let me know that they had just taken a PCR test to make sure they were not putting my mother at risk with their visit tonight (how about me?), even though they took a rapid test yesterday before showing up. If they were having doubts about their Covid status, why they did not wait until getting the results of the PCR before coming home last night? The whole situation is very stressful and after so many years my mother still wants to share with them for a couple of hours. I asked my younger sister to call them and organize dinner in her apartment for whenever they were ready because the whole thing was very abnormal and was already making me very upset. I cannot deal with that nonsense. I do not know what’s on people minds these days anymore.
Sorry about the rant but I needed to let it out. I just hope my mood improves with my third cup of coffee and a slice of chocolate cake brought by one of my coworkers.

    Happy almost Friday, everyone!

Wearing Remember Me, a hyacinth forward Dior from around 19999/ 2000? I bought this when I was living in Bavaria ( I liked the packaging and the colour of the bottle) and sent it to my mother back in NZ as she had worn Diorissimo, Dior Dior, Diorella etc. After she died ( two years ago, today) I found the bottle in her drawer, pretty much unused as she had grown into Comme des Garçons and wearing my dad’s perfumes after he died ( Eau de Sauvage, Crabtree and Evelyn Sandalwood, Ted Lapidus). So, from remembering me to remembering her. Cold and dreary , around 8C and darker in the mornings now.

I was in the vanilla mood this morning, so I’m in Geisha Noire over a layer of Lavanila Vanilla body butter.

I wore Dioressence EdT yesterday from a mini splash bottle. It had the houndstooth label on it. Gently spicy with some cinnamon and something deep lurking quietly in the base. I have no idea if it’s real or fake, but I did enjoy it. ?

I loved those houndstooth bottles! I can still remember how happy I was to have Diorissimo on my dresser in that spiffy bottle, right next to the pretty green bottle of Coriandre.

I am trying to make a dent in the sample sea, so today I am wearing Kerosene Sacred Memory. After dithering for months, I bought a new mattress and it was delivered very, very early this morning. In a box. I managed to drag it into the bedroom, heaved it on the foundation, opened both ends, and used my head to push it out of the box. All three kitties “helped” the process until I banished them to the hall. It has a 20 year warranty so I won’t have to do this again until I’m 86, thank goodness. It will probably take me that long to recover from the experience :-).

Kitties are so helpful with bedding in general! A previous cat was always incredibly “helpful” when it came time to put on a fitted sheet. Hope the new mattress is a success!

Yay for new mattress! I am still loving the one I got last year (also came in a box, and boy was that thing heavy) and hope you will love yours!

Decided to try on 1) Bois d’Argent, 2) Bois d’Iris and 3) Orchidee Vanille. I like all three, find all three somewhat similar, and have decided that 1 and 3 are the closest. Altogether there’s around 150 ml of pleasantness on top of my dresser.

Another swing and a miss for winter weather here. It turned out to be all rain, with a few sad bursts of tiny snow flakes every so often. But the cold is coming back with a vengeance tonight! Supposed to get down into the teens (degrees F). Hopefully there won’t be much in the way of water main breaks in the area.

SOTD = Agent Provocateur EdP. from my bottle. The falling temps called for a rose perfume today. ???

Yeek. It’s been a long time since I’ve had to worry about that. Most of the water mains that break here are over in Philly.

I hope that yesterday’s Song of the Day didn’t bother you.

          Vacation?
I loved it! I only ever hear ” Our lips are sealed” anymore and had completely forgotten about some of their other hits. My memory isn’t what it used to be.

Yeah, I have that same “Only one song every gets played” thing happen with other groups from the 1980’s. Gets really annoying fast.

That video for “Vacation” is such a fun one!

Wearing a mystery sample today. I get red berries and a pillowy musk. It is one thing to read the description of a perfume and try to tease out the reported notes. I’m content with my progress on that. But sniffing blind and trying to identify notes is a whole other thing. I’m much better doing that with flavors than with scents.

Drinking a new-to-me tea today: Miro’s Columbia Cacao, a black tea with cacao. It’s tasty, but has a much milder chocolate flavor than my holy grail Clipper Ship Chocolate Puer. I’m not sure why I feel the need to keep trying other chocolate teas, but then I’m also not sure why I feel the need to try 8 million perfumes that smell like the forest… 🙂

I love chocolate tea too, but dislike so many of them that I finally just bought some cacao husks to make my own. (Not saying I will never buy another, because I probably will. But if you buy some plain husks you can doctor the ones you buy!)

That’s a good idea! I started doing that with coconut after I an extra bag post-holiday baking last year.

I will confess tho, that my chcolate puer tea has teeny tiny chocolate chips mixed in. It’s not anywhere in the realm of hot chocolate, but they definitely add flavor and creaminess. I don’t think I could bring myself to add my own choc. chips to tea, but if they are *already* mixed in with the tea leaves, I’m OK with it. 🙂

Oh, that is decadent! I do not want any calories in my tea so I will stick with my husks.

I have a chocolate tea that I enjoy quite a bit, but since it is a black tea, I don’t brew it very often. Maybe if it was an oolong tea I could drink more of it.

Hi everyone! I own only two Diors, and I’m saving Diorissimo for tomorrow so that I’ll match many of you all :). So today I’m wearing Dior Eau Svelte. I think I bought this in the early 2000s. It still smells nice, in a citrusy body spray kind of way.

Now I’ll read all the comments!
