Monday scent of the day 5/17

How can it be Monday again? It’s also World Baking Day and the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. What fragrance are you wearing?

I’m still at the beach, and my perfume choices are limited. I will probably be in a bit of Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess whipped body cream later today.

Death and sex, entropy and excess

The scent, created by the legendary French parfumier Bernard Chant, was tangy, feral, and almost too naughty to wear to work, but this mildly transgressive quality was a big part of the appeal. The seventies were an unbridled and messy time, when loucheness was a life style born of postwar nihilism and economic decline. If the city was crumbling around you, why not smell like death and sex, entropy and excess? The new formula does not smell like these things. It cannot clear elevators or persist through a night of heavy dancing. It evaporates quickly and smells a little like soap. Still, I bought a bottle recently, because I knew that a new Netflix miniseries about Halston (called, simply, “Halston,”) was coming, and I wanted to turn my viewing experience into a kind of Smell-O-Vision. As it turns out, the synthetic, exasperating reformulation was a perfect match for watching the series.

Today, our twelfth annual Haiku Challenge (if you like, you can check out past years for inspiration). We’re also happy to include other forms of poetry if haiku don’t inspire you. Have a perfume-related limerick or a sonnet you’d like to share? Please do.

If you’re writing a haiku, pick a perfume or a perfume house (or really, anything related to perfume), and write a haiku about it. OR, skip the perfume theme altogether, and write a (non-political, please!) haiku about the COVID-19 pandemic.

Either way, use the simplified English form…
