The daily lemming

Mandy Aftel is reopening her Aftel Archive of Curious Scents at the end of this month (it's been closed since last March), and she has a fun new product for serious sampling: the AromaCone. "Our ScentCatcher AromaCone is a scent amplifier that acts like a magnifying glass for your nose. This elegant device focuses the aromas under it and creates a denser stream of odor molecules for you to smell. The AromaCone also maintains "nasal distancing" as part of a contact-free smelling experience. It provides a safe separation between you and what you are smelling, and from the other noses that smelled it before you. Inspired by an original suggestion from Becky Saletan." A set of 20 AromaCones goes for $40 at Aftelier.

Monday scent of the day 7/19

Monday, plus Daiquiri Day if that helps. What fragrance are you wearing?
I’m in Hiram Green Vetiver, which I found too much in hot weather last week. It’s just right this morning (it’s cool enough here to open the windows this morning, although I imagine we’ll have the a/c on by early afternoon).
Reminder: 7/23 will be Sitcom Friday…
A blast of sweet pea
As my eyes adjusted to both the darkness of the gallery and the swirling pink and fuchsia flowers projected on the walls and floor, it hit me: a blast of sweet pea, maybe tuberose, perhaps peony? The fragrance drifted through the galleries (and my mask), and I mentally connected the smell to the explosions of digital flowers surrounding me. The perfume was mildly intoxicating but not too artificial: It was a heightened interpretation of what spring flowers smell like, rather than a re-creation. That is also an apt description for “Continuity,” the inaugural exhibition at the Akiko Yamazaki and Jerry Yang Pavilion at the Asian Art Museum by Tokyo-based art collective teamLab.
