I’ve been thinking again about Kevin’s recent post about samples. I recognize his frustration with so many niche brands: the ever-higher prices and well-designed websites don’t always guarantee novel or memorable olfactory experiences. I deliberately stalled on trying the new-ish brand BDK Parfums (founded in 2016, but only available in the United States since 2020) because I had a hunch that, despite a wave of online adulation, this would be more of the same. But then I had a chance to receive a BDK sample set as a gift-with-purchase, so I gave in; why not?

The daily lemming

Method's latest limited edition collaboration features the work of artist Lisa Congdon. There are two gel hand washes: Wild Dewberry (above left; "this fruity fragrance is bursting with juicy notes of sun-ripened dewberries + red raspberries") and Soft Vanilla (above right; "cozy + slightly rosy with soft notes of vanilla bean and sandalwood. not too sweet. not too fierce. just right."), about $3.50 each at Target.

The prevailing aromas of my distorted reality

My Ponds facial moisturizer smells like cookies. My hair products, shampoo, and soap oscillate between crayons and cantaloupe. Peanut butter smells like crayons or chemicals, while garlic and onions smell like chemicals or caramel. In fact, "gently caramelized" and "lightly charred" are the prevailing aromas of my distorted reality. It's like there's a muted electrical fire in my brain at all times, quietly smoldering from the effort of rewiring the circuitry of olfaction.
