It was the dustbag that really set people off

Posted by Robin on 7 December 2021 12 Comments

And so it went with the unboxing over eight more posts, in which Ms. Harmon revealed perfumes (good), key chains (not so much), lipstick and nail polish (mostly good, even if they were also mostly sample size), a mirror (not), a rope bracelet with a CC wax stamp (huh?), a plastic mini snow globe and … a Chanel dustbag, the bags used for shoes or other accessories. It was the dustbag that really set people off.

— In a shocking turn of events, not everybody who shelled out $825 for their Chanel Advent Calendar thinks they got their money's worth. Read more in Chanel, TikTok and the Beauty Advent Calendar Controversy at The New York Times. (And in case you were wondering whether your New York Times subscription was worth whatever you're paying for it, the Times does point out that "A dustbag with “Chanel” on it is worth more than a dustbag with nothing on it.")

At least the dustbag is useful. The snow globe would have put me over the edge.

For me it would be the stickers. Multiple stickers. What am I supposed to stick them to?

The snowglobe would at least make me laugh? I’ll take the snowglobe, you can have the dustbag 🙂

I have not seen it, and mean to get through life without ever seeing a video in which anybody unboxes anything 🙂

I read that article last night and had a laugh, not at the people who got sort of rooked by the Advent calendar but at the executives who okayed that thing. They had all those limited-edition Factory 5 items in production — how could it not occur to them to include a tiny oil can full of body oil, a few of those shower-gel pyramids, a bag of bath tablets, a wee canister of the sparkling body gel? They could have made the calendar something really desirable and fought-over and collectible instead of the object of derision. I will never understand corporate decision-making.

That, and including small versions of those products probably would have led to full-size purchases by people who otherwise wouldn’t have tried them. Advent calendars are great promotional opportunities.

I have one of the calendars and I am happy with it. The contents are listed on the website so boo hiss if someone bought it and thought they were going to get more than advertised. The calendar is very well made and is a collectible.

For those interested, I am posting each day (at least for now), the items that are in the boxes. I’m on my iPad so I can only go to my page without logging in. The calendar is a few rows down, posted on December 5th.

I think there should be a calendar with all the Les Exclusifs!

I was about to say that I would in for a Les Exclusifs calendar, but it would probably be double the price of the No. 5 one, so maybe not. 🙂

Your posts about the Guerlain advent have me considering one for next year. I’ll probably just stick with tea, but it doesn’t hurt to dream!

I don’t think it will be double the price but then who knows?

Last year, I did a tea and a chocolate advent calendar. I got behind in week 2 but I will try my best to be lockstep with the days. My perfume advent calendar will not be neglected since it determines my perfume brand of the day!

I was going to say, weren’t all the contents stated on the website…? Glad that wasn’t just my imagination. I think it’s funny when people feel duped even though all the info is trivially available to them.

Agreed. The contents were not surprises and given the non-trivial cost, I expect people to be a little bit more circumspect before shelling out.
