Wednesday scent of the day 12/1

Posted by Robin on 1 December 2021 195 Comments

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit! Welcome to December. It’s also the fourth night of Hanukkah, World AIDS Day and Rosa Parks Day. Birthdays: Rex Stout, Bette Midler, Richard Pryor. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm trying Aftelier Joie de Vert.

Reminder: on 12/3, wear a perfume with a rhubarb note, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Bette Midler, shown in a still from the 1988 movie Beaches.

    Rabbit rabbit rabbit!

I’m not an iris fan but I’m in a couple of sprays from an old sample of OJ Orris Noir, which isn’t *super* irisy: it reminds me of TF Black Orchid, actually, with all that incense.

Agree it is not super irisy, which is probably why I did not adore it?

I’m wearing English Pear & Freesia, because it includes rhubarb as a base note. You can’t smell it, mind you, but it is supposed to be there. This is from a sample I received in a freebiemeet.

I think it did for the most part. I did have my rbf on today but people were still talking to me, so it may have had the opposite desired effect. I’m normally quite invisible and strangers don’t talk to me. Very weird day indeed!

Interesting. Some day I may be brave enough to try ten full sprays of Aromatics Elixir. For me it works best with a light mist that is barely in my same zip code. 🙂 I wonder if it is one of those fragrances that works best at eother extreme of application, and not so well at “regular.”

The 10 sprays was my attempt to keep people from coming too close to me in an attempt to keep a 6 foot radius all around me! Not that it’s usually a problem but we are in Florida for a few months.

Sometimes more is more. I have a ginormous bottle so I may as well spray away.

    Happy humpday, everyone…
Haven’t chimed in for a little bit, the holidays kicking in have made things so busy. But I’m sampling Jovoy 21 Conduit St, which has a rhubarb note in the opening but has since become pleasantly pine sappy.

Was looking for books for my step-father, an avid italophile, and came across a beautiful children’s book. Since mine are now old and out of the house, I don’t have a good excuse to buy picture books–but I thought you might be interest! It’s called Bartali’s Bicycle, about a Tour de France winner who saves lives during WWII.

Forgot my rabbits, darn it! But I’m happily basking in 24 Faubourg, rapidly dispelling a slight headache with espresso, and wishing Rex Stout a very happy birthday! The city has finally approved our application so tomorrow our very dead pine-y tree (it didn’t survive the ridiculous 116-degree days we had last summer) gets removed at long last, so I’m happy about that too … I guess. Sad when a tree dies, especially one as big as this one is. Fortunately the rest of the little urban forest on our property seems to have survived. And we can finally plant the city-approved replacement tree before the really cold weather sets in.

Happy December, all! I remembered my rabbits and my Nikki McClure calendar tells me the theme for the month is “hope,” which is lovely, though I decided this morning that my own theme will be “sweetness.” The figurative rather than the literal kind, but Jeux de Peau fits that theme either way so that’s today’s scent.

I’m in BDK’s Wood Jasmin. I know a lot of people do not like this one, but I just do. It is close to what I had hoped Angel’s Share would smell like. It reminds me of Irish Mist, a weirdly sweet whiskey liqueur that a boy I dated in law school would drink–at least my made-up memory of it as I don’t think I was aware of its scent back then!

    Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit!

    1) In Cloud body spray & Cloud 2 after my shower! Just started a strength routine in the mornings to combat SAD and oof, the sweat!

1b) But it a beautiful clear mid morning right now in PDX!

    2) I found out yesterday that I had 160 UNUSED PTO plus purchased PTO, so instead of giving notice to my job I am simply….taking the month of December EXCEPT the very last day that we are supposed to be laid off, the 30th. This is the workaround to the lay off, and if there is a severance package at the end of the month, I would still be able to receive it while working at my new job(I would get the purchased PTO in a check- I have always used that as a forced savings account).
If I am focused, I can pay off the HD CC bill for miscellaneous materials for the kitchen & powder in one fell swoop AND have my bank account (somewhat) replenished by the end of the year. I would then have no other CC debt.

2b) My holiday hardware job is going strong!

If you’re not averse to incurrring additional CC debt, you might like to add this to your library:

Mind you, they also have a “regular” edition for a mere $140 ?

Foo!! I completely forget my rabbits this morning.
Continuing my Lubin sampling today with Idole. I didn’t like this the first time I tried it, but that was from a dabber sample, not a sprayer, and I wonder if that makes a difference, because this time around I think it is great. Rum notes without the sharpness of alcohol. Vanilla, brown sugar, fruit notes, and leather but all smooth and well blended so it is difficult to distinguish them.

Tea of the day is Fortnum and Mason Queen Anne. Looking forward to starting my F&M tea advent calendar this evening.

I forgot to rabbit, I never seem to remember. I’m wearing two spritzes of Mazzolari Vetiver but it was smelling too much like poisoned roots, so I added some Mohur on top. Strangely, they seem to have cancelled each other out. Still working on my bulky knit blanket, I’ve unravelled it four times now because the stitches are always too tight. I don’t know how to make them big, loose, and all the same size. Any experienced knitters here with advice?

I knit very tightly, and all my teachers said you can not change how you knit. I have gone up two or more sizes in needles to get the right gauge – and gauge really matters for your finished project. I suggest that you get some bigger needles – go up two sizes to start – and do more swatches before starting again. Also, regarding most vetiver scents, “poisoned roots” works for me – only after I found Vetiver Oriental did I understand how nice it can be! 😀

Oh, wow — I find it so difficult to maneuver large needles. I have the opposite problem – I always have to drop at least two needle sizes, and I like to knit socks and other fine-gauge items — so sometimes I cannot find needles small enough!

Are you arm knitting it? Maybe you need to have chunky arms like me because my stitches were too loose. I think consistent size stitches are very difficult if you’re arm knitting because your forearms aren’t the same size wrist to elbow. Very frustrating! ?

No, I’m using needles. I had the same problem as you arm knitting, plus roving pills and shreds. I switched to Bernat Big Blanket yarn and 25mm needles but the stitches are sooo tight. Not the look I’m going for at all.

The only thing I can say is relax your hands, hold the yarn loosely, try not to pull the working yarn, and make sure you are not knitting at the tips but are inserting that needle all the way.

Seconding this — for me it’s all about keeping my hands relaxed and keeping a little slack in the working yarn. And yes, make sure you aren’t knitting on the tapered area near the tips.

    Happy December 1st, Everyone!!

Today’s SotD is Creed 2000 Fleurs just as it was yesterday. If I can describe it in one word? Gorgeous. But if I can use two words I will say: So Gorgeous!!

It reminds me a little bit of another beast of mine which is Imperial Tea by Kilian. Only here it is green tea and rose. Love them both:)

I always say my own saying: “if it’s Creed or Malle then it will be a perfectly done perfume”.

On another note the other day my Mom and I ordered a new birdcage for our African Grey. It was time to do so already. Since the large box arrived I’m arguing with my Dad who wants to return it. Why? Because in my email the order shows this cage with an African Grey in it and it looks similar to what the bird’s already got. But on the box there is a picture of a Conure. Well, the measurements are a match so what is the problem? Well no matter what I try to do to prove my Dad that it is still the same cage He still thinks it is a different cage that sits inside the box because it has that Conure on the packaging… Sigh.

TF Black Orchid from a sample. Maybe I didn’t do enough sprays, but this seems fairly generic…. As usual, no rabbits here.

Speaking of solstice, I laughed when I saw that our sunset will be at 4:08 pm today. We are overcast and gray…I think I get why folks use those lamps for SAD. (I remember working with someone in San Francisco, who had a huge lamp on her desk, even though she sat by the window. She must have been uber-sensitive.)

    ???!

Another day, another load of laundry. And dishes.

So: the funny story before the Thanksgiving trek. Mr. Jalapeno told his relatives that we would be bringing a side dish. However, his picks were either stuffing or Broccoli Casserole. Which both contain gluten. His older nephew has Celiac. I gave him my dirtiest look and told him that I wasn’t interested in poisoning anyone at Thanksgiving this year.

After some research, Mr. Jalapeno found both gluten free versions of cream of mushroom soup, and the French’s fried onions. OK. So I started making the casserole the night before our trip. I opened the first can of cream of mushroom soup… and was horrified!

My apologies to anyone if they have Celiac, but the gluten free version of that soup looks extremely unappealing. I spent a good 15 seconds staring at the can and thinking “How am I going to polish this culinary turd?!?” Fortunately for everyone else, I have a well stocked spice cabinet that came to my rescue.

I now know how to make a passable gluten free version of the casserole.

SOTD = Aedes de Venustas EdP, from the sample stash and one of you wonderful folks here.

I haven’t seen the gluten-free version but my hubby bought 2 cans of salt-free cream of mushroom. OMG! I didn’t have enough spices to help. I’m all for a low sodium diet but that was unreal; it tasted like wall-paper paste, and that was with a handful of random spices added.

It’s a surprise which brand I will get each day and I made sure to seed the calendar with more indie brands. I am also opening my Guerlain Beehive Advent Calendar but will not be wearing or using the contents. If I get a wildcard brand and the beehive has a perfume on the same day, I may wear the perfume although I am likely to change my mind so don’t trust me on this one.

    SOTD = Hiram Green Lustre

It’s a beautiful luminous tea rose!

The beehive revealed a wonderful 10mL mini of Rose Barbare. So cute!

I also have a chocolate truffle box and I am likely to pick one everyday starting December 11 as there are 15 of them.

Whew, I am exhausted just thinking of all this work! ?

Now off to read more comments!

The hair is soft and the body is a sturdy ornament grade (not ornament ball).

I’ll take those rabbits! I forgot, again. I’ll blame it on the nasty cold I am currently battling. I started my Advent calendar today too! SOTD was Nice Bergamote, by Essential Parfums.

Oy with the cold! Jalapeño may have to donate her rabbits since I gave away my 2 extras.

Wow You are sos lucky with the Guerlain Advent Calendar!! Wow!! Wow!! I just couldn’t afford one… But that’s ok. I buy a lot too in the end. I was really itching to buy a perfume advent calendar this year but that would mean I am too frivolous raising a toddler and stuff..

I made my own perfume advent calendar using a cheapie < $2 chocolate advent calendar. That said, a toddler is way more fun and responsibility!

I’ll take hajusuuri’s third set of rabbits — I *thought* it this morning, but didn’t say it aloud. I seem to have started the month with a very mild case of food poisoning — just enough to make me uncomfortable.

OTOH, I have spent the day wearing Winter Palace 🙂 AND this afternoon I finished my stressful documents for the admin; hitting “send” truly lifted a weight from my shoulders.

Oh noes! Even a mild case of food poisoning is really unpleasant. Been there.

Oh no with the food poisoning. I suppose you can virtually take the magical 3rd set of rabbits since it seemed to have multiplied!

When is the last day of the term for this year?

Friday is our last teaching day. My exams go to the very end — I have the absolute last slot, Friday 10 Dec. from 7-10 p.m. And then I get to grade them! But I should be finished by the 13th or 14th, which will give me two weeks to get ready to leave for Ireland (which is still on at the moment).
