Friday scent of the day 10/22

Posted by Robin on 22 October 2021 230 Comments

It's Friday, International Stuttering Awareness Day and National Nut Day. Happy 69th to Jeff Goldblum and happy 78th to Catherine Deneuve. The splitmeet starts tomorrow!

Our community project for today: wear a fragrance that evokes one of Pantone's picks for the Autumn/Winter 2021/2022 NYFW Color Palette. (If you like, click through to the article and pick your fragrance based on the color name or description rather than the color itself, as in "Leprechaun is a wondrous green hue emblematic of the mythical imps featured in Irish folklore" or "Friendly and joyful, an optimistic yellow offering the promise of a sunny day.")

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I went with Kenzo Air for Pantone 18-4434 Mykonos Blue.

Reminder: on 10/29, we're celebrating Pumpkin Spice season...wear a fragrance featuring any or all of the elements (cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, clove, allspice, & etc).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

To go with Fire Whirl, I’m in SL Chypre Rouge — the dark red of wine gums and tree sap. It’s the first Lutens I ever bought and I am still intoxicated by its mystery.

Ahhh the first SL I ever bought was Tubereuse Criminelle. The deep red juice would also nicely fit with Fire Whirl; especially in name. It burns so hot as it develops. One of my favorite facets of that perfume… ?

Finally made it to Friday. It was a LONG one.

Wearing SL Vetiver Oriental for Leprechaun. Not quite a foresty green, but a yummy one. If the pot of gold had dark chocolate in it, it would be perfect.

I’m still wafting Montale from yesterday. Definitely got the praline in the dry down. Reminds me of PG Santal Praline.

Rant follows, so feel free to skip it!

In other news, I just got schooled for putting trash in a public garbage can at a city park! T-Rex did her business, I cleaned it up and threw it in a plastic grocery bag that I recycle for use as trash bags, and tossed it in the can.

I hear someone yelling “Miss! Missss!” and I don’t pay any attention because I’m pretty sure I haven’t been mistaken for a “miss” in about 25 years. Then, this dude from the city catches up and tells me I can’t empty my “home trash” in the bin. I told him I picked up dog poop, put it in with some trash in a small bag and threw it in the can because I didn’t want to stink up my van. He says, “Well, if you live in your van, that’s technically your home and you can’t dump trash here from home.” So I asked him…

Why are these dilapidated RV’s and makeshift tents all over the place for weeks? Why is there abandoned furniture, 4ft piles of trash, and the smell of human waste all over what could be a lovely park with a little TLC?! Isn’t a public trash can meant for the (tax paying) public to responsibly use?!

Are you kidding me?! Next time I’ll just throw it on the ground like everyone else. This world is completely jacked. He did eventually back down because I wasn’t taking any of his BS. It ended with him saying, “Okay, you can throw a small bag of trash in the can If you need to.”

What a bunch of ? ?’s! I have half a mind to call city hall and complain.

What a pain! We have similar discussions on our local “Next Door”. Home owners getting upset about people putting dog poop bags in their garbage and such.
I look at it as, would the city or home owners rather see dog poop littered on the side walk? Or is a better solution to put it in a garbage can?
      I’d chose the latter.

Next Door app is filled with sanctimonious jerks. There’s a dog poop post every five minutes. It does bother all dog people when the few in town, don’t pick up. It isn’t like we won’t step in it either! Or worse, ?. I am very guilty of using the garbage cans and the one dog poop can in town. You did the right thing.
Don’t get me started on tax dollars and why my dog isn’t allowed to walk anywhere. ?

Re: dog waste: I’m mystified when people pick up their dogs poop, tie the top of the bag, and then (get ready), drop the bag on the walkway. What the heck?!? There are trash receptacles available, so use them! ?

Having lived across the street from an urban park, I’m very familiar with the no household trash rule. But one tiny grocery store bag? GMAB. So happy that you talked back to him for his ridiculous complaint.
Now, people throwing dog poop in my personal home trash can, I would not appreciate that personally. I carry my own dog poop back to my own house and expect others to do the same.

Sorry for your scolding. I hate stuff like that. Our small town wants everyone to be out walking and has spent lots of our tax money on randomly place doggie waste stations, with bag holders and a waste can. People stuff grocery bags in, as well as the city sometimes supplies bags. IDK; I’m a *cat* person, but glad to see the idea that in a small town with hundreds and hundreds of dogs people are encouraged to pick up pup’s business.

I’m in Indochine, mostly for comfort because of very sore upper arms due to dual inoculations yesterday (double-strength flu in one arm and the newer shingles vaccine in the other) … but I think Indochine also fits the “warm and supportive” portion of the description of Adobe so that’s my CP entry.

I’m a little meta with this week’s CP. In one of my truly greatest perfume regrets (that I didn’t buy a bottle/s), Rose Opéra by Scent on Canvas. The name is for a paint color (on canvas). Not Pantone (which does have an Opera Mauve), so not entirely sure which paint. But there is a company, Windsor & Newton, that makes a pink paint color called Opera Rose, which is very close to PANTONE 18-2330
    Fuchsia Fedora.

That said, this saffron beauty, to my nose, shares more with the pale effervescent yellow pinks of dry rosé wines. Saffron and tart strawberries. (https://winefolly.com/deep-dive/many-different-shades-of-rose-wine/)

I’m matching Leprechaun with PdN’s Weekend in Normandy. WiN is so fresh and herbal. Like walking through an herb garden. I can’t identify even one individual note – it is too well blended. It is a skin scent from the start and I imagine it won’t last long, but it smells so good.

I woke up in a non-CP-compliant mood for Black Vines, but woe, alas, my decant has turned! Scrubbed it off and layered Arbolé over the remnants, which totally works. Still doesn’t quite match the Pantone options — more of a greeny gold shot through with wraithings of ink.

I could eat Arbolé on toast! It took me a few tries to “get,” although I liked and appreciated it immediately. Now I can’t get enough of it! It smells like a birch tree having a midsummer afternoon nap and dreaming of being rolled in honey and anise seed. It smells like the contented sighs the tree makes when it wakes and stretches its limbs in the sunshine. And, wonderfully, it doesn’t smell like anything else in my collection.

I do see fragrances as colors quite often and Mx. is a rich chocolatey brown color for me with a little streak of gold sparkle. I had also thought maybe Iris Poudre today – and that would go with Pantone Blue Iris, not any of the colors above.

Second full day off now that I am working part-time hours (Mon/Tues/Wed) and it’s pretty glorious. I walked 6 miles yesterday, hiked in Discovery Park and visited the Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center (Seattle). But outings like this are partly because we have guests – I”ll still incorporate them, but not every day–I also have plenty of home projects to keep me busy.

I’m in MCMC Noble today, which seemed to me like it could go with the Root Beer colour. Also it’ll mostly be gone by the time I get to the (officially scent-free) office.

Friday…just have to make it through. Have to drive into HQ to exchange laptops (due to an annoying coffee error last week, where I didn’t realize the barista didn’t put the lid on all the way before I set my coffee down next to the laptop and it killed my keyboard), am dealing with a bunch of projects for senior people, and have an interview with a candidate for exec director at a nonprofit where I volunteer. Plus constant reminders from teachers and tutors on upcoming application/recommendation due dates and test dates. No down time this weekend, but once we get through November 15, I intend to take a deep breath.

Happy Friday, everyone! Wishing you all calmer weekends than mine. 🙂

We have a new French bakery in my little town that’s only open Thurs and Friday afternoons, I try to get there every week for bread and pain de chocolat, so that’s my plan for the weekend.

My SOTD is Fresh Cucumber Baie, to match with Leprechaun and Mykonos Blue. Cucumber is so crisp, aquatic, and green. Like I’ve just made a bowl of freshly chopped cucumber & melon salad, enjoyed seaside. I think this and the original W by Banana Republic have a lot in common.

I’m wearing Rochas Femme for Pantone Fire Whirl, because the drydown always seems to have this burnished, plummy red quality to me. My bottle of vintage Femme has turned about that colour as well, though I’m wearing the modern one today.

Wearing L’Artisan Légendes du Cèdre, which doesn’t really match any of the colors above. It would probably be a blend of Pantone 19 Root Beer from the Color Palette and Pantone 18 Olive Branch from the Core Classics.

Thank you everyone for your kind and understanding words and your well wishes for my mother’s health yesterday. It is very uplifting to count with such a comforting and supportive community. You are all so generous!

Having a cappuccino with a Halloween Peeps from a small box that one of my coworkers left on my desk early this morning. It really put a smile on my face.

I think they are all the original vanilla flavor. If I see them in one of my trips to the stores, I will grab some! As you said, it is time to “Eat Up”! ?

Légendes du Cèdre is a woody, creamy scent. Notes are cedar, labdanum and saffron. It leans masculine, but I find it pretty comfy. Sillage and longevity are average.

LPRN Black Perfecto EdP, which I think suits Rhodonite quite nicely.

Took a chance and bought a bag of Smitten apples yesterday, which I’d never tried. They are very crispy, as advertised. A bit bland on the taste, though. I chose them because each apple was on the smaller side, which I prefer. Taste wise, though, I like Sweetango better, so should have bought those.

Each year at the Minnesota Arboretum they have an apple naming contest; the Univ of MN has an extensive Apple development Ag dept. They let people taste sample newly developed varieties and vote on names. I remember SweeTango very clearly.

Eau de Gaga has become my go to for medical appointments, today it was PT.

This evening I chose Teatro alla Scala for Fire Whirl, the box is that shade of slightly burnished orange red and black tortoiseshell and gold. The scent is as opulent as the name suggests, a honeyed (beeswax note) chypre hybrid, with an oriental drydown, nothing else like it in my collection. Why has Krizia seemed to stop making fragrances? I also have K and Krazy and adore those too.

K is beautiful. Another 80s powerhouse if I remember correctly. Now I have to try those other ones you mentioned by Krizia. $250? Well I’ve spent more on perfume in the past but still that’s quite a hunk of change for a untested vintage.

Yes, K is very strongly animalic, not for the faint of heart; Krazy is very resinous, a stellar amber, and I should wear it more this winter, it used to be very affordable because it came in a big splash bottle, very unwieldy, perhaps you could save a search on eBay and wait for a good deal.

I like matching perfume to colour, but it’s been a busy week and I’ve not focused on the CP . I’ve been working my way through the Puredistance discovery set, so probably have every shade covered somewhere along the way 🙂 .
I’m relieved to say that there are lots of likes so far, not must haves, given the ridiculous prices. I’ll report back further.
Meanwhile, we’ve woken to another sunny morning, and Annick Goutal’s Chèvrefeuille is my thought for a post-shower perfume.

The Byredo was a big no, Le Labo was pretty much all fig (no), the Givenchy and Estee Lauder scents had that basic department store perfume smell. However, I quite liked the Jo Malones, surprisingly enough, as they are in the regular line, not the intense one, which is pretty much all I buy. There was also an interesting Byredo which I am testing today called Open Sky. Pungent green smell up front, turns out it’s cannabis, LOL. 🙂

It is a little bitter green on the opening, then you can smell the palo santo in the drydown. I’m really enjoying it.

I forgot to mention I tried Pulp again after many years and was surprised to find that I now love it. I also liked the new Lush scent Space, which has notes of sandalwood, olibanum and guaiac wood. Wore it to bed last night and it was very soothing. It has a bit of a sweet, woody, papery smell.

What fun! Have not done that in so long I can’t remember.

It is true that those are “regular” JMs, but they’re all recurring LE I think.

I am not up on all the recurring JMs… the Nordstrom SA implied Lavender & Silver Birch is exclusive to them but I didn’t verify that.

Super busy week at work, and an evening out yesterday, so this is the first chance I’ve had to read NST all week!

Wearing Vetiver Tonka today, which doesn’t really match any of those colors, but it smells good.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

As soon as I looked at this season’s Pantone colors I immediately knew my choice: Adobe. Its orange/rust/bronze shade IS autumn here in the Midwest: it says woody, incensey, earthy, and smoky to me. And what fragrance epitomizes this color – as well as its name? That would be my favorite October scent: the long d/c YR Nature Millenaire.

Its bronze, leaf-shaped bottle that fits nicely in the hand as well as the fragrance itself is perfect – which Yves Rocher describes as ‘a Woody, Spicy scent with scents of Earth, Bergamot Orange, Cardamom, Coriander, Cinnamon Bark, Cedarwood, Incense, Myrrh, Benzoin. Reassuring and sensual scents of earth, soft wood, and tender roots.’ There’s also a dryness to it that reminds me of the Southwest desert – and when I first tried Tauer’s very popular L’Air Desert du Marocain, it immediately reminded me a lot of the Nature Millenaire but at a huge price increase, and I really felt the blue bottle was all wrong for the scent. I like the LADM but I’ll stick with the NM, so glad I bought a back/up bottle. I believe other NST’ers in the past have commented favorably on this fragrance, especially the men’s version, which is equally awesome!❤️

We’ve had such a mild fall this year it’s hard to believe it’s nearly the end of October. Our trees are finally changing color, really late this year, hoping to get out soon to the Arboretum to really enjoy their splendor before the leaves fall. Wishing everyone a splendiforous weekend ahead!

It has been a WEEK. But I am at home with a sweet doggo (who hopefully will get her surgical staples out tomorrow) and an excellent cold German beer, so all is now right in my immediate world. Wishing everyone a moment of peace to savour this weekend.

Couldn’t click with the CP today; SotD Angel Fruity Fair. Even the pretty blue star does not quite match either of the blues. I came close earlier this week with Fendi L’Acquarossa and Fire Whirl. Love National Nut Day: friends, eat more nuts! They are high in calories but they have good fat and they are satisfying. Also, experiment with raw and/or unsalted nuts of different varieties. They can be expensive but I think Mr. Mossy and I have really improved our weight control and cholesterol levels by eating nuts every day. No medical advice here – just a nutty foodie’s report! Pecans and walnuts are our favorites.

Hi all! I’m in a hefty amount of Herba Fresca from my ancient mini that I’m trying to use up. Because it’s so old the scent has really faded, but it’s still nice. I’ll pair it with the leprechaun color.

I picked up my car today from the mechanic’s, and I should have asked for a line-by-line report of what they were going to fix before I agreed to the whole job yesterday. D’oh!! I knew they were going to do the brake pads and engine work, but they threw in new windshield wiper blades that I don’t think I needed, and an oil change (also not needed yet IMO). I know nothing about cars so I didn’t ask for a breakdown, but now I know better. But as the guy said, now the car is all ready for winter, though my credit card took a hit. I always wonder if these places take advantage of the clueless among us.

I had a pretty productive day today. Cleaned the floors, took the Wild One to the vet for routine exam and tests. She was very good for the vet! I’m always so pleased when she shows herself to be a good girl. Was on hold with the SSA for an hour, but eventually talked to a sentient being who helped me with my issue.

Wore Mugler Over the Musk today. Trying to get through things so I can send them on. This is a gorgeous cleanish musk, snuggly, soft and well blended. Skin scent for sure, but doesn’t veer into dryer sheet or plastic territory. Maybe it’ll show up on evil bay at some point. ❤️

It does smell like cola in the opening stage then it turns into an almost smoky spiciness with resins. Good longevity too. It didn’t have much projection after a while, but it was still there close to the skin all day. I like it and think it’s worth checking out.
