Tuesday scent of the day 10/12

Posted by Robin on 12 October 2021 196 Comments

It's Tuesday, Ada Lovelace Day and Freethought Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Guerlain Vetiver, which would suit Jeeves just fine.

Reminder: 10/15 is Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse's birthday. Wear a perfume for Jeeves OR Wooster. If you have never seen or read anything about Jeeves and Wooster, pick a favorite comic character from any medium, and scent that character.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Oops…tea at the moment is Upton Dikom Estate Assam with a dash of cacao husk and a tiny piece of cinnamon bark.

Today would have been my mothers’ 99th birthday. She lived to be 95. And while I would not have wished her one more day, we had her for a long time and the day is bittersweet.

Armani Bois D’ Encense for another chilly -ish day.

Thank you for the hugs, fragrant friends.

She wore Youth Dew, Shalimar, Arpege, Halston and White Linen.
And, I can remember a bottle of Windsong, too.

I indulged myself recently at STC, and this morning am in tiny spritzes of vintage Diorling EDC. What a gorgeous scent — and it might suit Jeeves as well.

And a hearty shout out to Kanuka for her reading rec over the weekend! I’m well into the Montaigne biography already, after downloading a sample and getting hooked five pages in. Thanks again!

Ooh Kanuka, if you like Montaigne, have you read Stefan Zweig’s short study of him? It was the last thing Zweig wrote, possibly unfinished, and is as wonderful (and as poignant) as the rest of his work.

Using up an ancient commercial sample of Ormonde Jayne Isfarkand, which is merely okay, nothing to get excited about, but at least it’s not actively bad.

Have you tried the Aura line for its rhubarb? I think rhubarb is what caught me with Aura. Mugler’s pre-L’Oreal scents are my elephant in the room: I don’t want that kind of perfume when I contemplate my favorite notes, but when I wear Aura (or Alien), I want to take them to my desert island. Go figure.

Morning all, my SOTD is the discontinued Minuit Enchante by Laura Mercier. Very cool morning but I’m headed out to the gym.

I am in bed at 9pm every night and up at 5am every week day.
Another reason at 68 yo I enjoy my 12 hour sleeps with magic pillow on the weekends.

Ordered a sample of Byredo Mumbai Noise. Too bad for me they are not owned by the house of many fragrances.

I’m in Angelique Noire which is just fantastic, but I’m bundled up in a coat and gloves in my very cold office so it’s not projecting and keeping me cozy the way it should. Surely this means I need to get a decant with a spray instead of this little dabber sample.

Despite spending time yesterday refreshing my perfume wardrobe with winter wonders that had been stowed away (and re-watching episodes of the saccharine but satisfying–sort of Little House on the Prairie in the UK–Larkrise to Candleford) I ignored all my more niche winter pickings this AM and went straight for Knowing. I must have some buried happy memory associated with this one, as it always makes me feel happy and nostalgic for goodness knows what.

I watched all of Larkrise to Candleford earlier this year! I so enjoyed the goody-goody escapism, somehow the saccharine didn’t get annoying. But I did find myself yelling at Thomas Brown a few times! ?

I’m wearing Narciso EDP (white cube) today. Back to the grind after a 5-day weekend. Fortunately, no problems getting back across the border in time yesterday, so all in all it was a good trip. I’m still wary of planning something for the holidays, though…so much testing and coordination if we visit family in multiple places. I guess that’s my project for tonight! Happy Tuesday, everyone.

That seems fair! My family in the States is either older or disorganized, so they rarely came up even before COVID. Now I think it’s probably not going to happen ever. We’ve always been the ones who had to travel.

Could you order a few of the at-home test kits and deploy them as needed to suit your travel schedule? They won’t suffice if you need PCR tests, but if rapid tests are accepted, it could save you some logistical hassles.

I’m trying out Nicolai Poudre de Musc Intense, and I quite like it, but it’s too similar to Musc Intense, which I have one of those cute 30 ml bottles of, for me to want more. I have to be in the mood for them, but sometimes these fluffy musks are just the thing. When I tried JHaG Musc Invisible with a friend, I exclaimed, “Oh, how squishy!” Good for a sweater, a couch, and a book.

Beautiful fall weather today, went to the west end for a dentist appointment in two discreet sprays of I Profumi di Firenze Agrumi di Sicilia but went all out this evening with Badgley Mischka, my fruit salad perfume in its luxurious silver spray – ims it was £10 for 2x30ml -on one arm, and Insomnia rediscovered during the coffee CP is really more a complex chocolate ? scent, a good thing in my book.

Tested a bit of Elie Saab Essences Gardenia this a.m. on one hand and EL Tuberose & Gardenia on the other. Am about to shower both off. The Elie Saab had that signature honeyed powder that I’ve come to associate with ES, and was nice for a warm, rainy morning.

Blimmin cold here again. Winter seems to be hanging on. Yesterday I went down to the harbour entrance to see if I could see any albatrosses on the opposite headland where they nest. I saw one so it must still be a bit early in the season. The white fronted terns were plentiful, though. Also spoonbills, which are wonderful birds…their bills are like spoons (surprise!) and they do a strange figure of eight trawl through the shallows for food. No godwits.

I’ve never seen a spoonbill – hope I do, they look amazing. My beloved and I have been excited to see a shag diving in the harbour on a couple of occasions recently. Shags are also known as cormorants, for some of you overseas folk 🙂

Apparently it’s Caligna week here — it goes so perfectly with dry offshore winds, sunny skies, and fragrant leaves going crunch-swish underfoot! I’m taking a group of conservation agency and non-profit reps out into the woods today to check out the pre-work conditions in a portion of my beloved preserve that we’re about to do some fuel reduction work in, so I picked up a big box of various fruit croissants and brioches from the local, wonderful French bakery because it’s not a party out in the woods if you don’t bring treats.

SOTD = Atelier Cologne Silver Iris, from the sample stash and Lisa D. Oddly enough, I am finding this to be labdanum heavy, and reminding me of TM’s Womanity. Not really noticing any iris until about 4 hours of wearing it. It’s a good pick for the current weather situation.

Sampling Nicolai’s Vie de Chateau. I find it particularly difficult to identify individual notes in her perfumes, which to me indicates a great creation, but is not helpful for my nose exercises! Hay, some rose, a light touch of honey, but also so much more going on. It is quite pretty. Would love to have this in a linen spray or diffuser. I like the way hay smells but I don’t necessarily want to smell like it myself.

I went to the local grocery store today with my daughter. We were in the canned aisle when I hear her say “why is there a robot here?” I look and sure enough there is a very tall robot slowly making its way towards us. Another customer said that it takes inventory. My daughter tried to hug it! I got us out of its way. I didn’t like it, I tell you, not one bit!

Very late posting here. Had a hard day working. After shower was Golden Needle Tea. It is an eau de cologne but performs like a parfum. Like I smell it 6 hours later as if I had just applied it. Loooovely tea & sandalwood.
