Thursday scent of the day 10/7

Posted by Robin on 7 October 2021 244 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday, plus happy 90th to Archbishop Desmond Tutu and happy 66th to Yo-Yo Ma. (And don't forget, the freebiemeet is still open!) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Prada L’Eau Ambrée, which very much reminds me of another Robin who was a long time reader here (and before that, a regular on MakeupAlley) before she passed away.

Reminder: 10/8 will be Thinking of You Friday...wear a perfume that reminds you of someone else (a friend? a family member? another NST reader? a celebrity? anyone, really). Adapted from a suggestion by chocolatemarzipan.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

In Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir. Another fall season favorite scent.

Glad to have encouraging news now in the morning, that my mother has shown significant improvement in the past two days and may be discharged from the hospital during the weekend.

On my second cup of coffee and ready to face my next meeting in a more cheerful mood!
    Happy almost Friday! ??

I adore JM’s Pom Noir, it was my trip down the wabbit hole with her line. Such a beautiful pom scent.
Have you tried the Pomegranate perfume oil by Perfectly Scentsable? It’s lovely, similar to JM’s Pomegranate Noir and currently 40% off because it’s being discontinued.

    SotD = CdG Red Sequoia

Smells like expensive pencil shavings in a really good way. I would wear this all the time if I had a bottle.

A few weeks ago I read a David Sedaris piece, probably in the New Yorker? He shared thoughts about his father’s passing away and some of his memories of family life.

David mentioned his sister, Amy, and how she wears enough perfume to create a cloud that arrives before she does. He said she wears four or five perfumes at once, and smells of flowers and pencil shavings. I wonder how many bottles in her collection and what she wears most often. Her Instagram posts are fun.

Anyway, today I’m thinking of people who are no longer here, and of you fabulous NSTers, and hoping everyone has a wonderful day.

We are planning to see David Sedaris at a reading next week!

I wanted to wear some crazy japanesish avant garde outfit, but won’t be able to pull that off. 4 or 5 perfumes I could do, though ?

My husband and I went to the Outer Banks this summer and kept an eye out for him and his house, the Sea Section, everywhere we went – to no avail. No Jim Comey sightings either ?

I don’t know your SotD, but oh yes pencil shavings can be wonderful. Avon used to have a perfume call Persian Wood. I have a cologne bottle shaped like a rocking chair, the cap being a gold cat. 🙂 It smells like flowers and pencil shavings and that Avonaide that I am very fond of.

SOTD Rose Prick (to match my mood)
pachouli and a drop of rose

Venting Post (feel free to skip)
A good friend of mine here is moving to SF next month and this weekend she is going away for a 2 week trip. We made plans a week ago to go out for coffee. I messaged her the day before to see if we were still on. She didn’t respond but came over (she is in our apt building) and asked to have coffee at my place instead of going out. So I agreed. Yesterday planning for her to arrive I made us cappuccino, grinding fresh coffee beans. Got her whole milk. Then you know the rest of the story of how that went. I think what upset me more is that I got ditched for grocery shopping. Like the text was a very passive..oh I need to go out and get this and that at Eli’s and I don’t want to keep you waiting with no follow up like-“be 20 min late” or anything. Of course I wrote back, its ok, don’t worry, another time. But today I am still angry. Mr L thinks this is her way of distancing herself because she is moving and we have been close friends for years. Female companionships (and all companionships) are quite complex.

Me and Mr. L agree entirely. Figure that she is going through a lot and is at a loss to settle down for a few minutes with an old friend to fill you in. I’d be annoyed and hurt as well, but I’m guessing that she is overwhelmed and just plowing ahead, friends be damned.

Agree w/ your husband…it is a way to distance yourselves/create separation before the true physical separation occurs. It happened to me w/ couple who moved as well years ago…it took me some time to understand why we argued/fell into a weird spot in the friendship but then I realized later what really had happened. Big hugs to you.

Ach. This is painful, the more so as she’s a close friend. When the pain lessens a bit, would it help to consider if this is characteristic of her (therefore, has something been revealed about how she values you, which might need adjusting to/ entire friendship gets re-evaluated) or, is this way off for a good friend in a stressful time (therefore, do allowances need to be made)? A very close friend of 20 years’ standing did something peculiar to me last year which hurt so much, and it took me months to deal with, but now I see that it was all in character, which has changed those years of friendship in a way that also hurts…you’re right, there are volumes to write about female friendships. Sending a Shalimar hug.

As someone who’s moved 4 times in 5 years, crisscrossing the country, it seems to me entirely possible that she’s just overwhelmed and stressed out and doesn’t feel like she has time to do anything but deal with the move.

Maybe you can try again and ask if you can bring coffee and pastries to her apartment and hang out while she works on packing, etc., or offer to help her while you’re there?

I’m not quite sure I understand the ’emotional distancing’ theory, although I have to assume this is something people engage in considering the consensus here.

I’d chalk it up to moving stress. (And making a last dash to get favorite nyc food at the grocery store she won’t have access to in CA.)

      Just my 2 cents.

My $0.10. Whatever real excuse she had is not acceptable; however, did it seem like she was in an emotionally fragile state? If she was, I suggest giving her space and 2-3 months to contact you and if she doesn’t, try contacting her and if no response, maybe it’s best to leave it alone, sadly.

Robin, I love today’s photo! Puts me in the mood for Black March or Wild Hunt, but today I’m in a judicious amount of Musc Ravageur to accompany a meeting-in-the-woods with a couple of professional associates, one of whom I’ve never met but need to forge a strong working relationship with, and the other of whom is crush-worthy and will likely let me ride in his truck and mess with his siren. 🙂 Going for gosh-she-smells-wonderful-but-not-like-she’s-wearing-perfume (which naturally will lead directly to she-might-not-work-for-a-state-agency-but-gosh-she-knows-her-stuff-about-fuel-management-and-we-really-should-respect-her).

Well, I’m back from the field, and while no one snuggled me, they did treat me with more warmth and camaraderie than I typically see from this particular agency. Can we blame the perfume?

My main squeeze is five times the expert in fuel management that I’ll ever be and doesn’t wear fragrance, but if he put on MR, I think I’d faint.

Les Parfums de Rosine Eloge du Vert from my sample purgatory bin. I’m not a fan of the opening, which smells like I crushed a green pepper with my bare hands…it’s one of the only vegetables I don’t love so it’s not what I want to smell like. I dunno why it escaped the giveaway bin so that will be its next home.

Piment Brulant does a little back-and-forth dance on me, between ‘cocoa with chile’ and ‘hmmm, green bell peppers…’ When it veers towards the latter, I’m not pleased.

ELdO Like This today — I finally grabbed the right bottle. Heading out for Thanksgiving weekend today…going down to the States, which I’m hoping will be the easy part. (Getting the test to get home on a weekend and getting back into the country before it expires is the hard part.) The land border’s still closed going South (except to US citizens), so I’m assuming there won’t be any lineups. It will be nice to see my family after 18 months.

Good luck with your trip! Ours went smoothly, and driving back into the US was the easiest border crossing ever. I’ve spent more time at red lights. But we crossed at Thousand Islands and I think the traffic there is pretty light in the general case.

The day we headed home, my sister and her kids, plus my mom, were driving to the Toronto area. We ran into each other at a rest stop a few miles from the border LOL. No one had any idea we were traversing the same highway except my sister, who failed to mention this, and was very casual about our chance encounter.

Bon voyage! When my husband crossed from Vancouver he was the only car, aside from the commercial trucks, which were routed a different way. He had no issues.

SotD EL Amber Mystique. I like the spicy amber, the fruity rose and I do get whiffs of “band-aide” oud. I have not worn it in a long time, and so far it’s like I am sitting next to someone wearing it; it does not seem to be me that smells so nice. I am going to stick with it today and try to pay more attention. Sometimes these strong perfumes are better understood the next day on clothes or pre-shower. Happy Friday-Eve!

Hi Kleestof, we used to live in SF, right by Sutro Baths and the Cliff House at Balboa St. We moved this past Spring to Millbrae. While I love our old neighborhood, it’s warmer and sunnier, I miss SF.
I used to live at the top of Craigmont in the Sunset, where the fog was so thick it’d make my mascara run!

Hahhhh that’s funny ? being someone of the non-makeup-wearing persuasion, I haven’t thought about moisture in that way. Sometimes just walking from Bart to work on Nob Hill gets me rather humid. I’m in the East Bay, recently moved to Richmond where it seems to be a nice mixture of marine and sunny.

Last evening I “attended” an Instagram Live sniffing event, and today I have all the blotters from that lined up on my desk, since the samples were sent to me in advance of the event. It smells wonderful in here! Alas, most of them are too expensive for me to purchase, even with a $40 off coupon. Nishane Unutamam was the only one I really did not like, to me it smells like burning rubber.

The ten we tested were L’Air du Desert Marocain which I love and already own, Arbole(Hiram Green) which I also love and already own, Parfums de Marly Akaster which I really liked, Goldfield and Banks Velvet Splendour, Ormonde Jayne Nawab of Oudh which i was surprised that I liked, despite the fact that I didn’t smell much oudh, Olfactive Studio Chypre Shot which I thought was kind of meh, Very Cherry Rose Chocolate Patchouli from Meleg which I could never wear because I would be craving chocolate all day, B683 Extrait which was amazing, Gallivant Tokyo which was lovely but not my favourite and the aforementioned Unutamam. I guess my favourites were the ones I own and Akaster or B683. I wouldn’t toss back most any of them except the Unutamam.

Well, I did it again. In a frenzy of goodness knows what, I bought a bottle blind. It was very inexpensive, from a Canadian purveyor, and just one ounce, which wasn’t all that much more than a decant. It is ELDO’s Roland Mouret Une Amourette, and I love it. Sadly, either it fades very quickly, or I go anosmic–but it has very little staying power. On me it is iris and a dry-opposite-of-headshop patchouli, with a warm buzz of neroli and vanilla in the background. It is not sweet. Elegant. However, opinions are all over the place about it.

It’s annoying when that happens! I have a few perfumes do that on me. I may love them but poof!.. they disappear. Or I cannot smell them at all but for a few vague notes. The last one this happened was Anamcara, just after spraying I smelled from up close and I couldn’t smell the notes properly, just a vague orange. But on subsequent tries this changed and now I can smell it. Very odd!

This morning I’m in my first wearing of Armani Cuir Amethyste, bequeathed to me by the lovely and generous Lillyjo. It felt familiar from the start, reminding me vaguely of two or three other scents … and now that Robin mentions L’Eau Ambree, I’m thinking that Cuir Amethyste could be the love child of that particular Prada and BV Eau Legere, with Le Dix and Jolie Madame acting as fairy godmothers. I gather from some review sleuthing that men perceive Cuir Amethyste quite differently than women do, and that at one time Portia was (and maybe still is) completely smitten with it (hi Portia!). I will wait for a few hours of further development on my own skin before opining further, but so far I’m very grateful to whoever or whatever it was that caused Lillyjo to remove it from her rotation and think of me as adoptive owner (thanks again, Lillyjo!).

Big thanks to such kind and warm comments. I bawled my eyes out, again, reading all the uplifting words of comfort.

My appointment yesterday was hard, but I was met with love. I can’t complain about that since I haven’t seen the same IRL.
I’m on a medication that is older and I forget the word, but interacts with the vaccines. There have been no legitimate studies in the US on my condition, but the studies out of Europe and India are frightening.
Their was one incredibly sloppy study done in the US. It was done with people of all ages, varying degrees of the condition, whether it was active or not. They did not include whether people were male, female, or identified as a different gender. No race, no pre-existing health conditions. My condition has not been under control. I get high fevers with it, there was no word about that.
Angry at the US for never giving a rat’s heiny about neurology.
Angry at people who think I am selfish for not getting the shot.
Angry at people who that tell me I am going to die if I get it.

Now, I am planning. I’ll end up getting it. To people please. Like. I said, I have to get my affairs in order. Hoping I can do that quickly. Even if I end up just having my disorder f’d up more, people need to be aware of their bully tactics.
Just updating, I shouldn’t be asking for consolation.
    Thanks for the love.

I’m so sorry you are going through this. Really nobody should judge others for getting the vaccine or not, that is entirely your personal decision. Vaccines are beneficial at a population level but on some individual cases this may not be so. The only ones opining there should be you and your doctors. Sending you hugs xx

I got a sample of Arquiste Anima Dulcis from a friend and I’m wearing it today.

I am burning a Bath & Body Works candle…Summer Boardwalk…quite pungent…supposed to be popcorn, apple toffee and salty/sweet cream maybe…suffice to say it’s sweet with vanilla detected. 😉

No perfume as I am doing the Beautyhabit Durga sniffalong later today…no affiliation…don’t think I’ve actually tried anything from Durga before either…

Hello everyone. Currently wearing a couple of sample sprays, should have paid more attention…two of the recent-ish Guerlain AA’s, maybe the neroli and the orange one, or something else entirely? Blah. One has vanished and one has lingered, something that goes on bright, stays bright, and goes nowhere (not even towards white musk). Hmm. I began the day in Paris-Edimbourg though, which reminds me of the Lancôme Aroma Tonic I wore by the gallon 20 years ago during a summer spent working in Rome. Dolce vita indeed!

    SOTD = Puredistance White

Mmmm good – sandalwood, rose, tonka and iris.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CUvJJMwr4xQ/?utm_medium=copy_link

I am getting credit for the CP because Puredistance reminds me of my scent twins Undina and Lucas!

And, the comment in a few places about using a banana for scale confounded me because bananas come in all shapes and sizes. For fun, I used a paperclip for scale (they’re not standard either as I found out).

Wearing my sample of Anna Pliska for the first time. It’s super pretty on paper (literally, when I spray a test strip) but straight up Double Bubble gum on my skin. Also very intense, and I only dabbed the tiniest bit on. Sad – I didn’t expect this to be a scrubber for me!

I don’t know this perfume, but Double Bubble is kind of a cult favorite. I remember when BubbleYum came out (I searched and that was 1973) and so many kids thought it was better: softer, sweeter. But I still preferred the often hard squares of slightly medicinal DB!

SOTD is D.S. Durga Rose Atlantic. My second time wearing it this week from a sample and I just cannot smell it. It is such a weird sensation! Not being able to pick up on one or two notes is not unusual for me, but I went full hajusuuri-level-sprays on this and I get nothing. I’m sad because rose + salt + linden blossoms is right up my alley. Mr. Vee ventured into the office today, so I can’t even force him to sniff to confirm whether I am anosmic to this or if it is just a super weak frag.

Drinking chocolate puer, so at least my tea smells yummy.

Spent the day in test sprays of Dusita Sillage Blanc. Those bitter greens were really a treat. I’d tested PdE Corsica Furiosa late this summer and loved the bitter green opening, and was heartbroken when it gave way to something akin to Muguet Porcelain, which has never been a favorite. It’s been (relatively) cool and muggy here today, which has made me wonder what the Dusita is like in other weather conditions.

Le Sillage Blanc is such an amazing sharp galbanum! I like it too but it’s almost a bit too green on me, I want a bit of a softer contrast after a while. But I can totally see the appeal, and I keep trying it from time to time.

SOTD is just a spritz of Hermes Hiris–wanted something classic and cool for this unusually warm day. Got a Covid booster shot today and so far so good on little to no reaction….we will see what tomorrow brings…..if I remember correctly, after the last shot I was tired and achy the next day. Just glad to keep up and try my best to take care.

I stopped at TJ Maxx and spotted Nirvana Rose for $17 dollars. I grabbed it, went to the line and saw it was 2200 miles long! Well after 9 hours of work, I just didn’t have it in me to wait. I put it back in a semi- hidden spot and if I have time tomorrow on my day odd I will go back.

You did it just like my nephew did. We went to a $5 and below. I promised him that I will get him one thing and of course he found several and he had a hard time deciding. So he finally selected one, hid the one he liked second in the general vicinity of where he found the item and put way way back – his reasoning was my dad will bring him to the store and buy him one thing. Smart kid and smart lillyjo!
