Comme des Garcons + KAWS Mirror ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 7 October 2021 35 Comments

Brooklyn-based artist and designer KAWS has launched a new unisex fragrance in collaboration with Comme des Garçons, Mirror.

COMME des GARÇONS and KAWS are pleased to present the artist’s first scent, MIRROR. Inspired by KAWS’s multi-faceted practice, MIRROR brings a complex blend of optimistic fragrant notes together in collaboration to create a musky floral scent. The bottle design is a nod to the artist’s iconic COMPANION character who materializes across a variety of medium, from fine art to consumer products, leveling the hierarchies between “high” and “low”.

Mirror was developed by perfumer Nicolas Beaulieu; the notes for the musky floral include turmeric leaves and root, neroli, clean accord, orange blossom, cashmeran, sinfonide (IFF velvety musk) and benzoin.

KAWS Mirror is available in 100 ml Eau de Toilette.

The picture on the bottle is depressing. I had never heard of Companion, and when I looked it up I got more depressed. I guess I am not experiencing catharsis from this concept! But a floral perfume with turmeric does make me want to sniff.

Ditto. It looks like drowning and that’s always an upsetting thought for me.

It did not depress me, but I am also not the target market and not going to buy it 🙂

When will CdG collaborate with a manga/anime artist??

They could put anything in a bottle with a label designed by Makoto Takahashi, Ryoko Ikeda (a luscious rose macaron for Rose of Versailles, maybe?),or Kaori Yuki and I would buy it unsniffed!

I had totally forgotten that CdG featured some of Macoto Takahashi’s (sorry, got the spelling wrong last time) art on their clothing recently, so it could happen!

They do seem busy with collaborations this year! So maybe.

My immediate impression was Mickey Mouse drowning in a sea of blood. How is this appealing?

Yes, I agree, horrifying. And the perfume doesn’t sound too appealing either.

Yep, “next on Dateline, who killed Mickey? Did he cheat on Minnie and she snapped? Or was it, a mistress? Here’s Keith Morrison with, “Mickey’s Fate”.

My guess is that Kaws fans will find it appealing, and possibly just CdG fans. It’s edgy and new and young. I bet it doesn’t matter if perfumistas otherwise don’t find it appealing 🙂

I was going to get it for the bottle alone (even though depressing). Then I got to thinking that I would rather get a KAWS-shaped bottle.

There is always the Pharrell Williams/CdG Girl bottle, which I think KAWS designed, no?

Tja, personally I think the news is much more creepy these days than this innocent bottle ? Well, the perfume sounds interesting, though the benzoin note also scares me off a bit (more than the bottle).

I WANT to like the edginess of KAWS Companions, but I don’t. I just don’t. And I like that CdG is using very unromantic, un-French imagery to sell hipness and status in their perfume. But goooollllly I agree with others, I don’t like the image one bit.

I’m curious about the perfume though!

Heh I actually like the bottle, but I have darker sensibilities than most. However, the perfume does not appeal to me. Maybe it’s part of the point to have dark imagery on a clean musky floral perfume bottle, but I wish the perfume sounded like it matched the vibe of the bottle.

Yes, therabbitsflower, different sensibilities noted 🙂 But turmeric, and of course *flowers* are great loves to me. The color and flavor of turmeric is associated with happy, festive moments.

I do enjoy turmeric and flowers, but the clean accord is a big no for me. Speaking of turmeric, my boyfriend cooks rice with it and bay leaf to go with a rogan josh chicken dish, and it’s great!

I like the bottle too. I’m ready for popular cinema to recover from Disney’s chokehold, so Mickey Mouse drowning in blood is just my vibe.

Juice doesn’t sound like it’s for me though. I see “clean accord” and I turn around.

“Clean accord” is a big old NOPE! for me. And I thought the art looked like someone had cut off Mickey’s hands, eeeeeeek! Definitely disturbing.

I love CdG. I know they are a very unique in their style. But honestly they collaborate with people/artists/brands I know nothing about and no one I know would know anything about. Not to mention that they are more often than not just weird. Like the whole HolyGrace and HolyGrapie thing
    …
    Like ok… Really?!
