The damage so far: third quarter 2021 buying poll

Posted by Robin on 4 October 2021 180 Comments

Donatella Versace and her perfume cabinets

Donatella, Our Lady of Perfumed Plenty,1, does have other responsibilities (making Channing Tatum's wildest dreams come true, designing for Fendaci), but she hasn't forgotten her quarterly drop-in to hear the confessions of her flock. She'd very much like to know what you bought in the 3rd quarter (July, August and September) of 2021.

Note that if you have javascript disabled, you won't be able to vote in the poll, but you can still record your purchases in the comments.

My purchases...

Donatella hasn't quite given up on me, but she's getting close. I bought nothing, again, all year long.

As always, report your purchases in the comments if you dare! And as always, we don't include samples or gifts, and you can count miniatures, decants and bottle-splits howsoever you like (I usually count them as half bottles). Samples don't generally count at all, even though some of us spend considerable sums obtaining them.

1. Why does Donatella host (against her will, mind you) the damage polls? There is no real reason other than the picture of her perfume collection, which shows that she indulges regularly at the perfume counter. The image, by the way, is originally from Allure magazine and appears here courtesy of Blogdorf Goodman.

Not too many sins this quarter, just Cumming, via Ebay, and Galop (partial bottle purchased from an NSTer with great taste). And possibly a 10ml bottle of POAL — I can’t recall if this was during the past quarter. Time is so blurry…

Just one, a bottle of Diptyque Kyoto. I downsized my collection a few months ago from about 100+ bottles to 40. While I do feel good about it, sometimes a think of a fragrance that I’d like to wear then realize that I no longer have it, then I quickly remember that there’s a reason I decided to part with it.

I like the tartness of it and the loamy earthiness the beetroot gives it. I don’t have anything like it and it layers beautifully over Tam Dao.

It’s a special quarter because I received a windfall (sale of a house which belonged to my parents), most of it is safely invested but I put aside some fun money which it turned out was mostly perfumes and at the time my broken wrist left with so much time on my hands:

Vintage Diorissimo esprit de parfum 75ml £54.08
Chanel les exclusifs Coromandel extrait 15ml £105
    No 22 £105
(I could have bought Bois des Iles at the same time so felt restrained)
    Berdoues Masai Mara 100ml £51.85
Bogue MEM extrait de parfum 50ml £121.80
    Phaedon Pur Azure 100ml £105

And the rest of my purchases for the quarter:
    Vintage Coty Rose Jacqueminot £19.80
Tom Ford Noir Extrême 70/100 £30
Vintage Caron En Avion 50ml £49.99
Vintage Miss Dior esprit de parfum 75ml £36.95
Crown Perfumery Crown Bouquet 100ml £26.96
    Stephanotis 50ml £19
Hugo Boss Deep Red 90ml £14 (enabler pin to Jalapeno and it turned out to be a vintage bottle in pristine condition)
    Chanel Misia edp 70/200ml £46
Molton Brown Muddled Plum edt 50ml £11
    Mahina edp 50ml £26
    Mauboussin Histoire d’Eau 75ml – £28 (my favorite purchase)
Serge Lutens Des Clous pour une Pelure £59
Serge Lutens Fleurs de Citronnier 100ml £46
    Estée Lauder Azurée 50ml £24
    Vintage Floris Special No 127 100ml £43
Vintage Etro Royal Pavillon 100ml £34
    Vintage Paloma Picasso 30ml £10

Fiore dell Onda by L Erbolario, because I was in Italy and bought it as a souvenir from a lovely little shop in Scansano…

Cloud Intense smells warmer, and more amber-y to me. It’s does not have as much of the airy pear/floral & cotton candy feel. It’s NOT B540 at all (despite internet lore) but it is a warm, light pear/caramel floral. It’s delightful for sweater weather.

I thought Donatella had given up on me from January 2020 – May 2021, but then I bought one bottle at Sephora with some gift certificates in May and then finally invested in some more Hermes travel sprays (the 2018 EdT Hermessences) in August and a long-awaited bottle of The Zoo NYC Club Design two weeks ago. Perhaps Donatella is more patient than she looks. She knew I’d be back.

I didn’t do too badly (from my wallet’s standpoint) nor too well (from Donatella’s standpoint):

    – 15 ml manufacturer’s bottle of AG Eau d’Hadrien
    – 10 ml travel bottle of FM Iris Poudre

I’m enjoying both of them. I generally end up in the 2 – 4 bottles camp and this held true. But there’s still time left in 2021 for me to break OUT.

    Guerlain Derby (100 ml)

Caron’s L’Ecrin de Vos sample set of six new or reformulated perfumes. I got Aimez-Moi, Pois de Senteur, Tabac Blond, Tabac Noir, Accord 119, and Santal Precieux as my 6 samples.

It is recognizable as Tabac Blond–I’m not good with notes, but I think I can pick up carnation, leather, amber and rose–but, in the early stages, seems thinner, sweeter, and more powdery. It lasts a long time, and I like the drydown better; it’s mostly rose and patchouli (I think) and–could it be?–I _think_ I detect some oak moss. The sweet powderiness re-appears at the very end (some 16 hours after I applied a couple of sprays). Overall, it’s decent, but I don’t find it as interesting or compelling as I remember.

I’d certainly wear it if someone gave me a bottle, but I’m glad I got a sample rather than getting a full bottle based on memories of earlier versions. I’m hoping the reformulated Narcisse Noir (which I don’t have a sample of) feels closer to my memories.

Two FBs here, too, both (ack!) full price from Nordstrom but that was reduced by a few Nordstrom Notes and a modest gift card.

    Paris-Deauville 100 ml
Hiris (FINALLY — I have waited four years to buy it) 100 ml

The Hiris is SO GOOD — to me it is very, very dry and woody Iris, and predictably fleeting but I am just so happy to have it that I have been spraying with abandon.

I’m quite proud of myself this quarter for only buying two bottles, and both of them are discontinued perfumes, which makes me feel even better about them. My lowest spending/number of bottles acquired quarter probably ever since I got seriously into perfume.

    Penhaligon’s Amaranthine 50ml bottle $145
    Tocca Brigitte 50ml bottle $36

I have gone completely mad in the last quarter and really don’t want to think of the accumulated cost of all I have bought! Let’s say I’ve gone from aficionado perfumista to having a proper collection (or problem depending on how you see it). The Guerlain discontinuation rumours very much contributed ? also the fact that I’ve been selling unloved bottles in eBay.

    So let’s see
    – 1 bottle of Gourmand Coquin (back up my first bottle very depleted) and French kiss (didn’t own it and blind buy but don’t regret it)
    – Le plus beau jour de ma vie
    – Madmoiselle Guerlain
    -Baiser de Russie
    – L’Heure Bleue EDP (glorious perfume!)
    – Chanel n 5 used bottle in ebay
    – Chanel 22 EDP used bottle off eBay (so happy with it and cost offset by selling Beige)
    -Grand Soir
    – Decant or Rose Nacree du Desert and Bergamotte Calabria.
Now waiting for Dusita Anamcara to be posted. I need to stop!

    Durga Poppy Rouge, $135 (discontinued beauty, no regrets);

Like Cicely, I was sucked in by the great Guerlain panic. I bought numerous backup bottles, plus a few new ones:

Le Plus Beau Jour de Ma Vie
    Rose Chérie
    Santal Pao Rosa

I also bought a bunch of other things, completely falling off the wagon:

Teone Reinthal Embers 2021 & Sacred Ground
    Amouage Portrayal & Material
A Lab On Fire Hossegor, Liquid Night and Hallucinogenic Pearl
    Laboratorio Olfattivo Tonkade
    Dior Vanilla Diorama
    Tocca Brigitte
DS & Durga White Peacock Lily & Bowmakers

Do report on the Santa Pao Rosa – I thought that looked very promising! Guerlain panic twin – it was Bois d’Armenie’s fault. I like the new bottles, but I’ve finally realized that 75ml is *a lot* of fragrance if you have more than a few bottles – and are older than 12. 🙂

You’re so right, MossyBerry! When you are infatuated by a perfume, you tend to think you cannot live without it and the “what if I run out”… my consolation is that the resale value of many Guerlains tends to be very good, so it is not really lost. My little collection does make me happy. Bois d’Armenie deserves back up bottle for sure!

I want a report about all your new perfumes too cazaubon 🙂 How are you enjoying Embers and Sacred Grounds? Glad you got Embers and hoping you love it! I use it as aromatherapy to go to bed and get gourmand vanilla/almond notes with the sandalwood. Somehow I don’t want to spray it on me to leave the house as it feels wasteful and it’s like a little ritual.

I was thinking of getting another TRNP but I was not completely sold with other samples I got- not enough to get a bottle. Do you like any others? Honey amber and Bitter Sweet sounded very nice from the YT channel Smurfygurly.

Le Plus Beau Jour de ma Vie I never smelt before last month and that is another new love. Also use it at home pm to feel cozy. Santal Pao Rosa smelt different and much much woodier the second time I smelt it (first time it was from an unlabelled vial when they were getting the new samples in the upstairs Guerlain fragrance hall and I wonder if they gave me a mixed sample with Rose Cherie as I swear I smelled rose and sandalwood++)

I don’t know many others from your list but Angel’s Dust is really beautiful- so far my favourite F Bianchi. I have not smelt Tyger Tyger or her most recent release but both sounded very tempting.

I love Embers, I think my previous bottle was the 2012 batch? But the 2021 is supposedly better, I haven’t even worn it yet, it just arrived. Sacred ground is wonderful, and I also own Bitter Sweet and Honey Amber. All delicious.

Le Plus Beau Jour de Ma Vie was another one that I’ve sniffed but never got around to buying, happy to get some at the last minute. Santal Pao Rosa is basically all sandalwood on me, I was planning to layer it with some rose lotion or another rose perfume.

Sticky Fingers is my favorite FB, but I am enjoying Angel’s Dust and Tyger Tyger (forgot to put it in my list, along with Luxe Calm et Volupte).

I bought one whole bottle, a totally cheap thrill (hopefully) — someone on here mentioned Eau de Gaga as a good summer scent a couple months back, and the notes sounded right up my alley, so I ordered a bottle for all of $17 off of Amazon. Don’t have it yet, though — as with most of my purchases over the past 18 months, it is sitting at my sister’s house on the other side of the border. She thought the Amazon package was for her, opened it, and was wondering why anyone had sent her Eau de Gaga. 😀

I’m headed down there this weekend, finally. Waiting on me there are Bulgari Eau de Thé Noir, a Tauer LADDM solid, a sample of Oeillet Bengale, and Night Flyer (formerly Zoologist Bat). But that’s most of my purchases over the last 18 months, so I have little to confess to Donatella.

    Beekman’s Rose Apothecary
    Beekman’s Violet Wisteria

    Goutal Paris Eau d’Hadrien Parfum

Beekman’s Rose, I bought because of the laughs that made 2020 a little less dim.

Eau d’Hadrien, old friend, I have been hunting you down for too long.

There was a big Iris Dragées drama when we got back to San Diego, couldn’t find my bottle, and I knew it had to be there somewhere. Looked through all the perfumes multiple times, pulling out hair. Finally spied it in its box on the floor of the closet with my boots. Whew. Must have been misplaced in the packing frenzy!

I received a sample, dabbed it on and was strangely compelled to sniff my arm all day. Fragrantica reviews suggest people think it smells like old school Coppertone. For me it’s not quite that, but the orange blossom and clean jasmine just hit right for me. (And the price point…)

Yay, glad you were able to find some good stuff at the Teo Cabanel sale! I have both the ones you ordered, they are yummy.

Bless me, Donatella, for I am sorry to have disappointed yet again…

At a giant rummage sale on Sunday, I found two 5mL sprays–one Obsession, one Pleasures, both vintage–for $1 each! I bought them (obviously) but that’s all I’ve bought all quarter. I’m not counting the one scented soap I bought, since I don’t have a soap problem in the same way I have a perfume problem…

I have gone somewhat hog wild this year.? That said, I also got my act in gear and have sold more than a dozen bottles on Ebay in the last few months.?? I am like a museum of one….ehaeheh I grow the collection then hawk acquisitions to other interested institutions. I would also add many of these were blind buys to illustrate the degree of madness. 😉 About 20 bottles…give or take… ?

Ooh delightful. The recent discussions here about Opium flankers has made me want to try them (I have a newish bottle of Opium, loved it, and stopped there). The recent Coco M varieties (l’eau privée etc) have brought me back to that one too. I loved it around 8-10 years ago but never wore it as I didn’t want to smell like the college students I was teaching at the time. But at least they smelled good!

No you can’t- especially as perfume lovers with more perfume than we can handle. I wish more perfume houses would release travel sizes in nice bottles and cases!

Ciao Donatella! We haven’t met but I know we’re going to become good friends ?Here’s a double espressso and my list:

    Diptyque Eau Capitale edp
    F Malle Superstitious (10 mls, doesn’t count)
Armani Privé Rose Milano (no personality, doesn’t count)
YSL Rive Gauche edt (on offer)
Perris Monte Carlo Jasmin de Pays edp (birthday gift to self, doesn’t count, but what a good gift!)
Hermès Monsieur Li (okay 100mls of this delicate beauty is a lot but it was on offer, was also a back-up bottle so yep, this doesn’t count)
Hermès Un Jardin après la Mousson
Guerlain L’Instant Magic edp (old packaging so reduced)
Guerlain Chant d’Arômes edt (as above, also a BUB so definitely doesn’t count)
Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile and Gelsomino Nobile (each in the leather purse spray thing of beauty, and the Iris seems to have disappeared in this country, they are Italian, and 20mls, so these are FREE)
    Estée Lauder Private Collection
Chanel Paris-Edimbourg (shared with Mr Dolce so this doesn’t count either)
Tauer Phi Rose de Kandahar (my first Tauer so a special exemption applies to this one)

And from the occasional chemist’s bargain bin and the dodgy discount shop:
Roget et Gallet Extrait de Cologne Thé Fantaisie, Tubérose Hédonie and Cassis Frénésie, 30mls each
    Rochas Madame Rochas edt
Oscar de la Renta Oscar Gold (200mls for £20 so…also free)

Donatella, I know I need to find a better way of dealing with life than using a lot of perfume, but it’s working for now? Arrivederci!

I haven’t Donatella’d for a couple of years, after starting a very detailed spreadsheet in 2016 and having my eyes pop out of my head at the amount of money I spent. I intentionally cut back on perfume spending and now it’s become habit. (Combined with the realization that I don’t need or want anything bigger than a travel size, it has also become easy.) I now spend more on perfume for my husband, which is somewhat more satisfying, and of course, free.

I went back and tallied from the beginning of the year, so am reporting all 3 quarters. I have here and have always reported samples and decants.

    Q1: Total spent $38.56

Sample of JD BFMV (to see if it’s still my favorite vanilla, and indeed it is)

2 VCA decants: Neroli Amara, Rose Rouge

    Q2: Total spent $44.41

Used bottle of Chanel No 5 Voile and 2 No 5 EdT travel sprays. I buy perfume almost exclusively on ebay and this was one of my few misfires, and entirely my own fault, so while it might look like a great deal, it was not. Twas a good reminder to ask before buying if questions arise.

    Q3: Total spent $131.88

Parfum d’Empire sample set (Le Cri, Acqua di Sandalo, Wazamba, Corsica Furiosa, Azemour)

Samples of 4 of the 5 CdG Incense series

3 samples from Kerosene (Unforsaken, Unknown Pleasures, Follow)

Chanel No 19 vintage 7.5 ml spray. This cost all of $30.74 and makes up for the No 5 fiasco

Vintage minis of EL Knowing and Cinnabar (enabler pin to SmokeyToes)

BBW Bonfire body spray (enabler pin to hajusuuri)

So for the year thus far I’ve spent $214.85. Not bad considering that’s what I was spending per month not so long ago.

Thank you for these lovely perfumes and for the reminder that happiness can be had on a budget. I let myself go this summer, for various reasons, which is okay, but only in the short term. I do not want the delights of perfume ever to become a problem in terms of storage, finances, or regret. Meanwhile, congrats on that gorgeous No.19!
