Friday scent of the day 9/24

Posted by Robin on 24 September 2021 249 Comments

Happy Friday and happy National Punctuation Day! (And hey, the swapmeet is still open.) Today is also the birth date of Jim Henson and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Our community project for today: wear whatever fits for whatever reason — scent a muppet or a Fitzgerald character, maybe?

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in Chanel Bois des Iles in extrait, for that picture of Scott and Zelda — really it would suit either one of them.

Reminder: 10/1 is International Coffee Day...wear a fragrance with a coffee note.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Years ago, when my brother was in secondary school, he and his classmates had some fun by raising his hand in the middle of a Science lesson:

      – Sir! Sir!

      – yes, what is it?

      – what’s a “menomena”?

      – “phenomena”?

      – No, “menomena”

      – MENOMENA???

      – BETHEEPY-THEEPY!!

There was a band called menomena in the aughts. I had read a lot of praise for their first album, and in my head I pronounced the name Men-O-Mena. When I asked about their album at the record store the clerk tried really hard not to laugh at me. 🙂

My family are HUGE muppet fans. I grew up with a coffee table book of The Muppet Show skits that included the menomena one. I really should have recognized the word!

We’ve developed the bad habit in our household of referring to a phenomenon as a “menomena” on account of our being Muppets fans. Totally setting my son up for an awkward moment in school one of these days…

Ages ago, a friend of mine fell hopelessly in love with Creed Tabarome and dithered about buying it until she discovered that it was about to be discontinued and replaced by Tabarome Millésime, not at all the same thing, so she said to hell with it and bought the big 8-ounce bottle. She sent me a sizeable decant, and today I am coming to the end of that. It’s been slowly evaporating over the years (I kept it in a zip-lock bag for all the good that did), and what is left is even more concentrated, a rich golden aura of tobacco leaves and amber.

A lot of people describe the vintage Tabarome as “old man”, and they are quite right: it smells like a sophisticated, kind, generous, and charming old man, the sort any young man should aspire to be.

So, as I have never read any Fitzgerald save for a few short stories, I guess we might as well put it on Statler and/or Waldorf.

I don’t know, unfortunately. We fell out of touch over the years, which happens — I didn’t know when I was 14 or even 21 that the number of friends in my life would steadily dwindle, that that’s just how it is.

Knowing her, though, she still has it, still wears it, and still smells fabulous — if not that, then something else. She was so much more sophisticated than I could ever dream of being.

I’m in Safran Troublant. I think Deva wore it earlier this week which reminded me of my decant.
Yesterday was gorgeous weather. I went out kayaking, possibly the last paddle of the season which always makes me a little sad.
My college daughter will be here tonight about dinner time and it will be the first time all 3 kids will be home in I can’t remember how long. I’m going to try and enjoy every minute of it.
    Happy Friday.??

I’m in Micallef’s Aoud Gourmet, from a bottle I bought years and years ago, when I was still in a state of joyful astonishment that there were perfumes that smelled like nothing I had ever experienced before. It’s a weird one, but not in a bad way. It can’t decide if it wants to be a medicinal oud or a sweet gourmand, and wanders back and forth between the two. I’m often feeling fairly weird these days, so I guess it suits.

    Happy Friday, everybody!

And I saw that The Addams Family 2 will be out starting October 1st in theaters and On Demand. My decide on your COVID risk brain immediately went to do I go to a movie theater (and be with people who may be eating and be unmasked for 2+ hours and not socially-distanced) or stream it On Demand (which I hope means Comcast). The answer was easy.

You know, I really did forget that some of the Exclusifs were released in extrait, and I am going to carry on as if they don’t, lest I spend the next years obsessing over Bois des Iles parfum…

I am in vintage Chanel No 19 extrait, which fits both angles of the CP, and like BdI extrait, would work for either Zelda or F. Scott F.

Doing last minute packing and planning for an international trek tomorrow. 2 flights, then picking up a rental car to cross into Canada, then a 2-hour drive.

We need covid tests no more than 72 hours old to cross the border, which has caused me no small amount of anxiety. We got tested Weds and yesterday and our Weds results already came in. But they expire 2 hours after our plane lands, thus the 2nd round of tests. Hopefully everything will go smoothly.

Because of the border shutdown and Canada instituting covid hotels, all flights to Canada originating in the US were rerouted to the covid hotel cities. I’m going to Ottawa, which was not a covid hotel city, so we can’t get a *regular* flight until the schedules change in November. Last I looked, the best available flight stopped at 3 cities, for 4 legs total, clocked in around 12 hours total travel time, and cost 3x what it normally does. It’s otherwise 2 short legs and clocks in around 4 hours.

So if it weren’t a familial obligation, I’d not be making this trip (or traveling anywhere outside the US.) The whole thing has been extremely anxiety-inducing and I’ll be hugely relieved once we’ve crossed the border.

That said, happy Friday and cheers to the weekend!

I’m so with you, kpaint! I’ve had to put off going south for a long time (U.S. passport renewal hell, testing / border uncertainty, getting the whole family vaccinated first), but I am finally going to do it over Thanksgiving weekend next month to do our annual fall farm visits with my dad, whom we haven’t seen in 18 months. The whole process has been such a pain — and I haven’t even gone yet! — that I am not sure I’m going to go again over the holidays as we’d planned.

Fortunately getting into the U.S. is relatively painless for us, since we can drive. (My colleagues who aren’t dual have had to fly, even just to get from Vancouver to Seattle.) But the problem is getting back into Canada. My dad’s in a small city that’s fairly isolated and NO ONE will guarantee a test result in 72 hours, especially over a weekend. So we’re having it done in Seattle on the way, and if all works well, we’ll cross the border on the way home about an hour before it expires. If all doesn’t work well, we’ll have to pay $750 for rapid tests at the airport. Sigh.

I hope all goes well for you — enjoy the time with your family!

There’s a Kaiser location in Seattle that does travel PCR tests with a 24-hour turnaround. That’s where my parents got theirs done, and they had results in 18 hours, and they didn’t have to pay afaik.

Reading through all the rules is no easy matter. I spent a full 8 hour day trying to figure out what we needed to do and still wasn’t sure. My husband spent another 2 or 3.

At least driving into the US will be easy with American passports. Are you all dual citizens?

Oh – and my parents drove from Seattle to Vancouver on Wednesday night and they were the only ones crossing!

I will look for that Kaiser location! Thank you! One of my colleagues who’s been down to Seattle referred me to a lab company that tests and promises 36 hour turnaround even over the weekend, but you have to pay (it’s not crazy, it’s $90 each). He found it after trying Walgreens for free and not getting the results in time. I also found the place at the airport that will give results in an hour, but that’s $250 each…very much a last resort if everything else falls through.

My dad spent a couple of days casing testing places in Spokane for me, and went to a couple of Walgreens to ask in person, and no one there will guarantee a turnaround in 72 hours (sigh). I guess it gave him something to do for a couple of days. (He’s retired.) 🙂

Yes, we’re all dual, much as my daughter refuses to believe me when I inform her that she’s a U.S. citizen. (She’s never lived in the U.S., so doesn’t feel much connection, except that she loves “Hamilton.” 🙂 )

These restrictions are crazy. I mean, I get it, but labs in other countries are under no obligation to meet Canadian entry requirements, so it’s a headache.

It’s just silly to require PCR tests for vaccinated folks. Rapid should be more than sufficient.

I mean, not to be a total weenie, but domestic travel seems to me to have been a big enough PITA even before the pandemic — last time I flew I was all disoriented by the machine-only check ins and how harsh and surly the whole air-travel thing has become.

This week has been so much fun looking for a perfect F Scott Fitzgerald matching perfume. His favourite drink was gin.
Also, Robert Redford and Mia Farrow were draped in Cartier jewels for their spin as Gatsby and Daisy.
So, L’Heure Brilliant VI by Cartier has the gong.
Gin, lemon and aldehydes. As cold and sparkling as you would wish.

Here’s a link to the fabulous jewellery of that movie.

Amouage Gold today, for Miss Piggy. I probably should have gone for something even louder in the ’80s vein, but I don’t have much of that. Plus, only the best (Amouage! Gold!) for Miss Piggy.

I’ll probably switch to Tauer Les Années 25 for the Fitzgeralds later today.

Kitchen: Not done. It inched closer in the 30 minutes the contractor was here yesterday, and will inch a little closer in the 30 minutes they will be in to skim coat today. But they’re ignoring three other issues I’ve been harping on with the designer (so he’s supposed to be harping on with them!). The paint, supposedly, will be done Monday and they will take their stuff with them, though. (Of course, I found out yesterday that the upholsterer ordered the wrong colourway of the fabric for the dining room bench that should have been finished ages ago since he’s had it for 5 months, and the right colourway won’t be in until late October. This…is just the story of this renovation.)

We were going to buy a sofa in May that they told us should arrive by Labor Day. Then we got distracted, but are planning on putting the order in next month.

I’ve been assuming, for no good reason at all, that production times would be back to normal by now. But I suppose it’s more likely that it’ll take even longer ?

The global supply chain issues are supposed to last into next year, I believe. The appliance dealer told me a month or two ago that I shouldn’t complain about things taking 6 months when they told me 12 weeks — now they’re saying 6 months and it’s probably longer. I do know IKEA is still out of lots of stuff (we need drawer liner, small trash cans, a new white bookcase, and an interim media solution until the cabinetmaker gets around to building one, all out of stock).

We waited for 6 months for a small stand-up freezer last year. It came in like a week before we were moving 10 hours away into an apartment we’d never been inside before so we declined.

But I managed to get a smaller freezer and new tv last fall on the spot, so it must depend on what retail sector you’re shopping in.

The design person at the furniture store told us they were having backlog issues because things were shipping slowly “from France.” I almost snorted out loud.

I did a lot of redecorating last year, and am finishing up a few things this year.

From what I can see, this year is much worse.

It doesn’t bother me, there is nothing I really need, and I just remind myself that I am not dying of covid, knock on wood, and I can wait.

Molinard “Habanita” for at least a nod in the direction of the roaring twenties, although it could just as easily serve Miss Piggy vamping it with a cigarette holder and a black dress.

A busy week, my project has finished its “development” phase and next week we’ll be frantically snagging everything prior to launch. Happily I am being retained to help the “embed” phase when we hope to get folk using the stuff we’ve created to make their work easier/ better quality. So if all goes to plan I will be stopping at Christmas and will worry about a next contract in February or March next year

I have not been very perfume-focused for a while now but I did enjoy a couple of Pierre Guillaume scents this week, “Entre ciel et mer” from a sample and “fleur de foudre” from a FB. I think he is one of those perfumers who turns people off by being needlessly prolific. The 3 former brands “Parfumerie Générale”, “Collection Croisière” and “Huitième Art” are now just branded “Pierre Guillaume” and there are 2 new lines as well. Anyway, he may be less fashionable than he was and he may jolly well deserve to be, but I enjoyed those two.

Reading NST through the week I can see/sense some folk are at their wits’ end out there between family issues and health issues and pandemic issues and supply-chain issues and retail staffing issues, whichever side of the counter you stand. A big hug to you all. A big hug to *us* all. We’re not wired for continuous sustained stress and I think we’re mostly doing the best we can and well done to us for getting this far. :^)

Habanita is very Roaring Twenties, and of course it was originally sold as a perfume *for* cigarettes, to be painted on them before smoking or as a little sachet to be tucked into your cigarette case. Imagine all those modern young things scenting the air with their daring cigarettes and feeling so terribly au courant.

You’re doing it right with the rollout. I am living a nightmare of participating in UAT that yielded triple digit bugs, a rollout date that was delayed by 12 days, advised not to request access to Production and indeed, access to Prod would have been useless per a group that insisted on getting access.

Yeah, I feel that pain. My company just delayed implementation on a core system upgrade that’s taken three years so far. It’s the second delay this year and now launch is sometime next year after we get through the holidays and a core sales season in Jan-Feb. They were coming back with >50% defects in testing in the production environment, so had to put it on hold again.

Seriously, what is up with all the sloppiness. The tech team kept saying it’s “Agile” and I want to say all it really means is minimal dev testing and flexible prod turnover. Ours was supposed to have been completed last December…

I’m Agile qualified – I work in PMO but wanted to know Agile so PMs couldn’t bullshit me. It usually takes 2-3 questions before you can think to yourself, “I don’t know what you think you’re doing, fella, but it ain’t Agile”.

          • ockeghem says:
            24 September 2021 at 6:46 pm

Hoo boy. “Agile.” Yeah. I’m on a secondment to a “transformation” team that is “agile” — and we’re supposed to be hitting revenue goals…without any IT resources. Yeah, no dev support. Uh huh, that’s not happening.

We’re supposed to be “bringing agility to the organization.” But honestly, no one really understands Agile methodology, it’s just a buzzword. Agile is not going to be our organization’s saviour. (And I say that understanding fully that Agile is a methodology…one of many…and there’s nothing wrong with it at all, but it is so misunderstood.) What they also don’t understand is that Agile is customer-led. (Hahahahahahaha….this in an organization that laid off all of its new Customer Experience team last fall and has let the IT organization and cost implications lead every major project launch.)

            Sorry…you got me started! 🙂

Hmm ya well not to keep throwing shade on Canada, but the federal government there fully implemented a new payroll system a few years ago that was so not-ready-for-primetime that it resulted in tens of thousands of people not getting paid for over a year, my BIL among them. And when they finally did get some cash in hand, the accounting was so effed up that it was a years-long process to trace everything back to get proper and accurate remuneration. Except the onus for that was on the employees, and presumably most of them gave up and took the shorted paychecks out of sheer desperation and exasperation.

I was going to wear something green for Kermit (and Robin – my favorite because he is just so cute) but I got distracted by samples and put on Regime des Fleur Gold Leaves instead. It is indolic but not headache inducing. Lots of lily blooms and stems (regular lily, not LOTV). I get the pitosporum too, but only because I recognize the shared note with TF Neroli Portofino. There is much more going on, but nothing else that I can pull out and identify on its own; this is very well blended. One review mentions the vase water, and I do get a whiff of that. It is a very compelling scent – I keep sniffing my wrist – but it is more interesting than wearable.

I’m going on vacation next week to a cabin in Vermont. Today’s CP reminded me that I’ve been wanting to reread A Moveable Feast, and next week will be a good time to do it.

Fireplace on low as I drank coffee this am. Could hear the wafting of Tiny Dancer coming from the workmen building the duplex next door. Cat briefly snuggling until I stopped petting…she’s disappeared now. (Oops…she’s back…and draped in front of the fire) Checking out Fat Bear Week site in preparation of the annual vote.

And…the only scent that seemed appropriate for me was Hermès Eau de Narcisse Bleu. In honor of my husband’s favorite muppet…Grover. And, yes, we do have a stuffed Grover.

If you are thinking online purchase, my idea won’t work, but if you are where there is a brick-n-mortar, might they have the 75ml bottles of one of the Guerlain L’Art & La Matiere’s gathering dust under a counter or behind something else in the stock room? I know stores shift their stock around, but I nabbed Iris Torrefie in the last few weeks online; seems like something might still be out there.

SotD: Azuree d’Or for Miss Piggy and for Zelda. It’s a scent that to me has a lot of glamour (for Miss Piggy) but also says to me: let’s party hearty, and is at home in a smoke-filled room with free-flowing beverages and loud music and talking. I could not find my bottle of Azuree, but the Ad’O is quite similar.

I’m pairing it with the eco version of Oscar the Grouch. My sister used to have an Oscar the Grouch in his trash can alarm clock. When the appointed time came, his grouchy voice said (IIRC) “Ring, ring, hey wake up there. And don’t forget to wind the clock so I can wake you up again tomorrow! Ring, ring …” and the whole thing repeats again until you turn the darn thing off. I don’t believe it is electronic but you can push Oscar into his trash can and he would pop up when you press a button.

I will probably put a few things up for swap tomorrow. Stay tuned!

I work in a museum that has a Jim Henson exhibition. I wanted to wear something odd and out there in honor of his earlier work as an experimental filmmaker–something like Gentiane Blanche or Chypre Mousse, but I’ve used up all my odd stuff. So I’m in Selva do Brasil, as I remember some jungle-y settings and backgrounds in Muppet Show, and Labyrinth.

SOTD is 4160 Tuesdays’ An Excess of Carelessness, in honor of F. Scott Fitzgerald! Maybe later I’ll use Tocca’s Liliana hair perfume, which I wrote about here in the context of Daisy Buchanan: https://scentsandsensibilities.co/tag/the-great-gatsby/. Excess of Carelessness uses materials and notes that were au courant during the Gatsby era: Heliotropin, Vanillin, Coumarin, Bergamot, Amber, with floral notes that I think include iris and violet. I love it!

I started the morning in Memoirs of a Trespasser (again, because Mr. G likes it a lot), and have now switched to L’Ambre des Merveilles because it smells like a snack kids would enjoy while watching the Muppets. Not terribly inventive on my part, my excuse being a lack of deep experience with either Muppets or Fitzgerald. Have enjoyed reading others’ pairings this week, though.

    https://thecandyperfumeboy.com/2017/10/31/perfume-review-scherzo-tender-by-miller-harris/

Tender is the Night is one of my favourite modern novels and my favourite of F.Scott Fitzgerald novels and I remembered that Miller Harris had commissioned two perfumers to create a perfume based on the same passage from the book (2 interpretations of the same quote). I was tempted to blind buy but never got around to it so I can’t wear either one. There are so many great settings (Paris, Riviera, Rome, Zurich, New York, )and ‘lifestyles’ (psychiatrist, movie star, wealthy, alcoholic) in the book that almost any perfume would work I think. I have no idea what to wear…it’s early here…but I’m going with Jil Sander Sun which is my newest acquisition and more layered and interesting than it sounds. Have a great weekend! Everything is so stunningly green here: the paddocks are lush, kelly green. Kermit would be right at home.

On a wide side note Kanuka,
One of the first times Jin and I went to dinner with Olfactoria and her husband I wore Sun. The husband remembered it being one of Olfactoria’s fragrances early in their relationship and asked me what I was wearing. It was such a beautiful moment and Olfactoria was visibly moved by his remembrance.

Nothing delights me more than when serendipity enters my life, and it did with this week’s cp.

The Great Gatsby is a favorite book of mine, and I knew I wanted a fragrance that would not only suit Daisy but also the Jazz Age, New York, the book’s theme, and would’ve been created at that time. In searching by year, I came upon Lanvin My Sin, circa 1924-1925. Perfect . . . . and sounding strangely familiar to me. Looking it up on fragrantica revealed why – the mysterious Madame Zed is said to be the perfumer – and I had just recently finished a book that featured Madame Zed and My Sin as well! Duh! I had bought the book, The Perfume Collector by Kathleen Tessaro, several years ago at my local library’s annual book sale and only now just read it. Never heard of Madame Zed before I read the book, thought she was only fictitious and created for this book, but I guess not! And, luckily, I have a bit of vintage My Sin left that I believe was my mom’s that I never wear but did today to tie everything together. And the explanation Madame Zed provides in this book of the meaning behind both the fragrance and its name really suits The Great Gatsby and Daisy. If you can find a copy, it’s worth a read.

So that’s my rather long-winded contribution for today’s SOTD but I really wanted to share that. Hope everyone is enjoying the first weekend of fall or, spring!, if that’s where you are.

I have that book! My husband read it (and read the first chapter aloud to me, probably during the shut down) but I never finished.

What a great connection, and now I can read the book knowing that Madame Zed was a real person. I can’t say I’ve ever run across a reference to her in all of my perfume reading.

      Well played with the CP!

The promised gorgeous weather has arrived! Yay! ?????

My two favorite Muppets are from The Muppet Show, and are Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker. Their hijinks used to leave me in stitches. However, I didn’t feel like wearing Angel EdP for its (supposed) melon note, which actually smells like candied pineapple to my nose anyhow. So I went with Plan B, and a second set of favorite Muppets.

SOTD = Clinique Wrappings again, for Waldorf and Statler, the balcony hecklers. It’s a little bitter, like they are. And I think it’s great.

I have been trying to think of a Beaker pairing all week, and have not come up with anything. Feu d’Issey was as close as I got.

HA! Waldorf and Statler always made my sister and me go crazy in hysterics. We thought they were the finniest, more clever and interesting characters in the crew.

I have to admit it, I’ve never seen it I’m too scared. I’m only brave enough to watch trailer, lol.

Angelica Huston plays the Queen of the Witches, and the witches are all at a convention talking about turning children into mice.

I may try to watch it. It’s currently on Netflix.

I checked Netflix and couldn’t find The Witches there. HBO just did a new version of this starring Octavia Spencer and Anne Hathaway. I made my husband watch it with me, since I was scared to watch it by myself — I am a wimp. It was not that scary.

Was in a casino bathroom, someone tried to cover up business with a thick, patchouli spray..I appreciate the effort but kinda made it worse lol.

Sprayed a few sprays of Ruby Woo on..listening to 80s tunes at the casino lol
