Wednesday scent of the day 8/25

Posted by Robin on 25 August 2021 143 Comments

It's Hump Day and Banana Split Day. RIP Charlie Watts. (A quick PSA: I am at the beach this week, and so the blog will be even lazier than usual.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm commando, again, and not likely to accrue any points at all this week. (If we were giving out points for ice cream intake, though, I'm sure I'd be in the lead.)

Reminder: on 8/27 we're doing People change... wear something you never would have worn in your pre-perfumista days.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    RIP Charlie Watts.?
It’s a beautiful morning here and I was up early and down to my favorite coffee shop to get a Chai. I didn’t watch the news last night or this morning (I have been avoiding it more and more lately) and as I was waiting for my drink I pulled up nst on my phone and saw the news. I instantly felt very overcome with emotions and had to fight to maintain my composure while standing there. I don’t want to be labeled that weirdo who bursts into tears while waiting for her tea. I can’t even really put into words why it hit me, so instead I’ll post a link to my favorite from the Rolling Stones:
    https://youtu.be/nVrdXUHvsF0

    I’m in Not A Perfume.?

Yes, Charlie Watts and Neil Peart (from Rush) were two of my favorite drummers. Such a sad loss. ?

SaraN – a work colleague and I are both huge Rush fans. He was fortunate to attend Rush’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of fame a few years back. I think he’s seen them over 15 times in concert, me, only five.
We were both crying when we heard of Neil’s passing. He was an extraordinary talent.

I knew you would be.? Such a great song. I think part of why the news hit me so hard is that, the Stones were formed before I was born so they have just always *been there* My childhood, my adolescence, my college years, and my adult years, and now…..
Like I said, hard for me to accurately put into words, but hopefully you get me.

The Stones…… *sigh*. RIP Mr. Watts. I wonder how this will impact their upcoming tour this fall? And I’ve never seen them in person but I had watched a docu-concert of theirs on PBS and their performance was mesmerizing. To have that kind of chemistry after all these decades and with all the things that they have been thru, both singly and as a group, well that’s the stuff that legends are made of.

From what I understand, they have been playing with a substitute drummer while Charlie was sick. ( I can’t remember his name atm)
I think they will try and go on with the tour.

Saw them at a Madison Square Garden about 15 years ago and was amazed. I remember watching them as a little kid on American Bandstand or some such show and loving them. My mother disapproved mightily.

RIP, Mr. Watts. I am more of a folkie/classical music person. I read his biography and was impressed with his family life and seeming sense of avoiding the celebrity lifestyle even though he was in show business.

SOTM is a dab of Sicilian Leather. It’s beautiful, but I’ve about decided that it’s just over the edge of “too masculine” for me. Just as well, as I do not need another leather scent to lust after. Post shower I might go with Prada L’Eau Ambree since someone here mentioned it recently and I tend to forget I have it.

My SOTD is Cool Tropic Palm, by Comptoir Sud Pacifique. Light and aquatic, with a Mahogany and Teak base. Allergies are flaring up.

Met up with an old family friend last night for dinner at our favorite local sushi place. It was a lovely visit and so much fun. He is from an old Italian family who lived in Brooklyn back in the day. I loved hearing his stories. At times he would get so carried away, he’d throw in a smattering of Yiddish or Italian.

Enjoy the ice cream, Robin! Definitely something to get points for. 🙂

SOTD is Narciso EDP. Sample thunked. I have to say I rather like this one, and it looks like I could get a mini, so…hmm.

Cool and sunny here — starting to feel like fall, especially with all the planning for back to school on both Mr. Ockeghem’s and Little Ockeghem’s parts.

Good news of the day is that apparently someone is going to come and do work in my kitchen today — that hasn’t happened for 2 weeks, since the electrician came in and screwed up a whole bunch of stuff. I’d like to believe that we’ll have most of the appliances installed today…though at this point I would have to see it to believe it.

It’s a cool, dreary morning here and I’ll be on an interview panel via Zoom all day for a new manager position we’re hiring for at work. Almost reached for No. 19 for the professionalism that’s in it, but then thought, why? I’m not the one being interviewed! So, I’m in Cumming, for the unprofessionalism that’s in it, and because it’s cuddlesome. I probably always would have loved Cumming, even in my pre-perfumista days, since it’s so far outside of the standard scent-palette of conventional fragrances.

I’m sad that I missed Cumming; it sounds lovely, and seems like such a great human anyway that I’d want to try it. It’s just something that wasn’t on my radar when it came out. Now, of course, it seems that I’m way late to the party, and of course it’s discontinued.

But I love the idea of a bit of unprofessionalism on a full day of Zoom interviews. 🙂

I can send you a sample if you’d like — hit me up at c a l i n d a 4 at the mail that is hot. Also, CB I Hate Perfume’s After Party is a good approximation of the original — a bit less warm and buttery but still very nice and earthy. Apparently one of the original ingredients became unavailable, so he had to reformulate.

Rose de Petra by Stephanie Humbert 777 (odd name for a company, isn’t it?) This is a light, initially tangy sort of rose that glides to incense over time. An appropriate scent for Petra, a place I find fascinating and would love to visit someday, if pestilence and war fade enough to make it safe to travel to that area of the world.
Closer to home, fighting donut cravings with more fresh grapefruit, and watermelon, and the occasional small dose of organic dark chocolate and what not….

Maybe you can make your own air-fried donuts? So far, although I haven’t done much research yet, the main ingredient is still pre-made biscuits. If there are gluten-free biscuits …

My dear, donuts is just shorthand for any carb-rich sweet thing, and I am trying to avoid them all. When I splurge on homemade carbs, I tend to go for my Welsh grandma’s easy peasey shortbread recipe – 1/2 cup excellent butter, salted or not, 1/2 cup brown sugar, or cane sugar, or baker’s very fine sugar, whatever you have on hand, 1 cup almond flour, 1 cup fine unbleached wheat flour, 2 tsp cornstarch or tapioca flour, a splash of almond extract. Keep the butter as cool as possible and still be workable. Mash this all together with your hands until it is mixed, it will still be crumbly, pat it into a 1/2 inch thick round wafer on a sturdy cookie sheet, chill for half an hour in the frig, then bake at 325 for about 25 minutes, until the bottom edge is just starting to brown and the top looks slightly puffy (Your oven may vary – watch it like a hawk, since the almond flour goes from uncooked to burnt in a matter of minutes – remove from oven when you see hints of browning). Let cool a few minutes, slice into little squares with a sharp knife. Butter, sugar, just enough flour to make it stick together. So yum, but so bad. Fabulous still warm with a nice glass of cold milk, or once cooled, with a nice strong cup of tea….Grandma appreciated the simple things in life. But she had Type 2 diabetes and had a horrible stroke, so I am trying to not appreciate some of those simple things so much. 🙂

I thought I was going to participate in Pandemic baking and got all the ingredients. FWIW, I haven’t turned on the oven in years and will probably need to get rid of the pandemic stuff. With this said, the recipe can probably be modified to work on an air fryer. I would skip the butter and the sugar and substitute with apple sauce and some avocado oil.

Testing a sample of Gallop to see if I want to keep a bottle I snagged on discount. This is perfectly named because it really does give the impression of buttoned up blue blood who rides horses. Can absolutely imagine this as the perfume of an equestrian who grew up in an english manor house (and now lives in a slightly large one), wears competition style dress every time she rides, and has grooms to take care of her horses and stable (and the muck). To her, riding smells like the smooth leather of her saddle and boots, roses and fresh air from the garden she trots by, and fresh hay in the stable. I was never into horses, but I am an unapologetic anglophile, and I can see wearing this when I want to project an air of composure and confidence, but not necessarily the authority of No.19.

Drinking english breakfast, steeped with some shredded coconut for kicks.

I’m using unsweetened, pre-shredded coconut that was left over from my sister’s macaroon baking experiment. I got the idea from Georgia Tea Co.’s Snowflake tea, which is black tea mixed with shredded coconut and almonds. It is quite tasty.

My sis is perpetually trying to make baked desserts “healthier” by doing things like substituting applesauce for eggs, pumpkin purée for butter, yogurt for cream, etc. I will be generous and call her results “mixed.” There is a joke from The Good Place about how humans take something good and make it a little worse so they can have a little more of it, and that about sums it up. In fairness tho, the macaroons had the right look and mouthfeel, they just had almost no sugar. Savory macaroons.

Torrey Pines is dreamy. Perhaps I knew too many bad boys who lived relatively near there in my 20s? …. Gorgeous though.

Am I remembering correctly that you get to go back to San Diego in September?

Terracotta because it’s humid here, and I’m heading out to one of the state parks for a thing on gardening for pollinators. Which is somewhat amusing since I’ve never gardened. But, I likely will, so keeping pollinators in mind makes sense. I have to return a book to the library that I, unfortunately, didn’t read and can’t renew…. Oh well.

    SOTD = Slumberhouse Ore

Spicy, smoky, chocolate, amber – woo and I used 8 sprays but I am inside chez moi. We’ll see how it goes when I go out for a walk later, assuming I do!

At some point, I’ll have a photo up on IG as the bottle is just perfectly perfect perfection. Did I say it was perfect? ?

I remember when I was young and my mom heard over the news that Nelson Eddy had died.

Howdy, waving back at ya! ?? I remember being young and not thinking of anything much other that my immediate circle of family/friends/fun. While it seems a bit superficial and shallow now, I’m so happy for those worry free times, because I look back at them with great fondness. I think people equate being young with being selfish, but I think it’s more being innocent of the complexities and tragedies of life. Getting older removes those blinders for sure. Every age has its own gifts and curses, I guess. Hope you are well!

Wearing Philosykos today. I think maybe I get CP points for this. I don’t much care for fresh figs, although they are sometimes OK. I hate dried figs (and fig newtons, ugh!) with the passion of a thousand fiery suns. So fig perfume was definitely not an intuitive choice. 🙂

However, I love it, and it’s great in the summer heat.

    SOTD: Hummingbird

Its the blind buy that arrived the other day. I doused myself in it prior to bed last night as a first time try (not recommended). Hummingbird definitely has Bee’s DNA in it and I find it very pretty. I might try layering it with Bee to see what happens.

    Chipmunk is coming!

Always been a perfumista. I can safely say I wouldn’t have tried iris fragrances, as an adult. I couldn’t identify the note and read every description as powdery. Friends here taught me a lot this year. Iris/violet=win! I had no idea the frequent pairing and I adore violet.

Have a beautiful day! It can be great!

A thunk to report – my first in many years – Stash body oil. I have been using it over the last week or so as I work readying my new vegetable garden. I put lots of it on my hair, which I normally don’t do, and on my limbs to see if its cedar and patchouli would keep bugs off: I did not want to evoke jokes about bug spray scents, but why couldn’t something smell wonderful and be practical? It certainly made my hair nice and soft, and I did not get any bites. Post shower, the scent did not linger, even in my hair, which surprised me. No CP points, as I have always like this style of fragrance and patchouli is my life-long love.

Unintentionally participating in CdG Kyoto. I got samples of the whole incense series after asking here for recommendations for non-summer summer perfumes. I’ve worn very few incense-forward perfumes and have no point of reference for incense IRL, so it’s a genre that’s totally foreign to me.

Am I enjoying it? I think I might *appreciate* it more than I enjoy wearing it. If it lasted 1 hour it would be perfect. I found the same with Zagorsk when I wore it the other day. Wore me down a bit once I got past the first hour.

After watching and waiting and watching as my neighbour’s clump of daffodils slowly opened and feeling so cheered by their appearance I was a bit glum when less than 24 hours later the family came outside and picked them all! Not a single daffodil left …baha.
Still two amazing things. The first is that I saw a skink – one that has been around for several years by some stones near the washing line – yesterday. It must be spring and warming up. The second is that I managed to walk a few hundred metres down the road to a spot where a large mimosa tree hangs over the pavement. I buried my nose in the flowers and breathed deeply , what a wonderful reward for a walk. I have no muscle strength at the moment, it’s amazing how 3 months of couch lounging can deplete your strength. We’re still in level 4 lockdown so it is almost spooky quiet around here, apart from the birds which are all calling in spring. Wearing SL Couche de Diable. I like it. A bit similar to Bapteme du Feu and Rousse (combined).

Aww, that’s such a shame about the daffodils. :-(. Speaking of no muscles, I tried to go for a bike ride today and barely made it 8km, feeling like I was going to collapse at any moment. A far cry from the 100kms I was able to do 5 years ago. So glad you were able to enjoy the mimosa tree! Hopefully you will be able to build your strength back up to walk the dogs, I loved reading the tales of your walks.

Today I’m wearing Pacifico by Snif. Blind buy based on notes and the graphic design (yes, I am that sucker) and it’s just great. So happy about this scent. Before my perfumista days I would have never even considered a blind buy.

Our dog had a face to face encounter with a copperhead today. Thank heavens she wasn’t hurt, but dang, stress levels plus one billion. It’s funny how I got into protective mama mode and would have picked up the snake and tossed it far if I had to. Thank goodness that wasn’t necessary. Still coming down from the adrenaline.
