Tuesday scent of the day 8/24

Posted by Robin on 24 August 2021 135 Comments

It's Tuesday and National Peach Pie Day. (A quick PSA: I am at the beach this week, and so the blog will be even lazier than usual, and I am already quite behind on comments.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm commando, again, and planning to spend most of the day by the water, reading and chatting under a beach umbrella. (I am just starting book 3 of the Blandings Castle series, Summer Lightning. It has been so long since I read this series that it's almost like reading it for the first time.)

Reminder: on 8/27 we're doing People change... wear something you never would have worn in your pre-perfumista days.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Green Sea Turtle teapot ("These porcelain teapots feature original art by marine artist Kim Rody fired into the glaze.") is $39 at Ocean Life.

That is a really cute teapot.
I’m in Molecule 01+Iris today. I think Iris lovers would like it. Yesterday’s M+Patchouli finally got the downvote from my daughter in the afternoon. She said it was overpowering. “I can’t even smell my OWN perfume over yours!” lol. And that was only 2 sprays.
So, yesterday afternoon I did something I’ve never done before. I went to the barre3 studio in my neighborhood. Holy cow, what a workout! Granted, I haven’t worked out in…well, I can’t remember when. My legs felt like jello when I was walking to my car afterward. Going back for some more this afternoon.?

It’s too hot to wear much perfume. I have on the remnants of last night’s Seville l’Aube and may just stick to China Rain today.
Thanks to everyone for the well wishes for cataract surgery.! Everything went smoothly except that I feel lopsided….looking forward to having the other eye done next Monday.

One drop, 4x daily. There’s a tiny implant of antibiotics etc that gets inserted into the eye during surgery that dissolves over a few weeks. It’s amazing how much this procedure has changed over the years.

Very glad to hear all this! I’m due to get both of my eyes done as soon as I’m able to. (No such surgeries allowed during my recovery period from the shoulder replacement.) I have heard from others as well about the lopsided feeling, but at least it’s temporary.

I have returned to trying my Nicolai discovery set, and today is Fig Tea. I don’t like fig, but this is more fruity than figgy. The lactonic notes in most fig scents is missing. I like the fragrance, so its a win for me.

I never was an amber lover per se. I tried Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan years ago from a mini bottle I used to have – and while of good quality – decided amber wasn’t for me. That is until I got a bottle of Tango from my Mom for last Xmas. Feel deeeeply in love with Tango. Then miraculously I realized many of the perfumes that followed Tango also had amber in them. Squid by Zoologist has maybe not amber but synthetic Ambre Gris that is just as warm as the real thing is. Then Tuberoza has a base of amber too. I believe even Chinatown has amber in it too!! And I loved Chinatown since it’s launch in 2005 or so.

Wearing Amber Oud by Killian today. This is an amber heavy, oud light sort of rich perfume which I like very much. It’s doing well on a coolish morning, supposed to get hot later. Right now I am getting more oud than I usually do. When this fades away mid afternoon I will probably reapply my other Oud, Miral, a more classic middle eastern style dense smoky Oud with floral hints, which is great when it is cold out, so I am interested to see what it does in heat.
An earlier poster mentioned a second cup of coffee. I believe I will emulate that example. No peach pie – might get some cut up watermelon chunks, or a half a grapefruit – I am back on a gluten free regime for a while.
Last fall I successfully dropped 20 pounds over the course of 5 months with gluten free, no sugar, no carbonated beverages, minimizing processed meats and carbs in general, alcohol limited to 1 glass of red wine a week. Now I have maintained that new weight for many months and here we are rolling into fall again, so I am going to get back on the bandwagon, slowly, by eating up all the offenders and not replacing them in my larder. Interestingly enough, the hardest thing to part with at this moment seems to be carbonated beverages, which have been hitting the spot these last few really hot and muggy days. I think I have two small bottles of tonic water left. I will probably make a gin and tonic this coming weekend, and then no more of that until next July!

Do you drink flavored seltzer/sparkling water w/ no sweeteners (real or artificial)? There are so many good seltzer/sparkling waters out now it’s hard to keep up. 😉 I have read about the issues w/ diet soda but wondering about not drinking carbonated beverages if they have no sweeteners. I love sparkling water. I love regular water for that matter too. ehaeheh I have some friends who have a tough time drinking regular water for that matter.

I have a friend who had fibromyalgia symptoms, and her wholistic doctor told her to stop drinking anything with carbonation and it really reduced the intensity of her aches and pains. So I stopped drinking carbonation, and it helped my middle ages aches and pains. An old cowboy I knew refused to eat bacon, ham or sausage, said it made his joints hurt. I stopped eating processed meats, anything with nitrates in it, and didn’t notice much difference for a while, I just like fresh meat better. Now, if I give into impulse and have bacon and eggs for breakfast, my joints will hurt for the next two days. Lack of gluten (and lots more green leafy vegies) soothes my digestive system, but I have to go a couple months gluten free to completely feel the benefits, and I will have pretty strong cravings for a few weeks there in the middle. Dreaming about donuts is just really weird. I can’t imagine what it must be like to try to withdraw from serious medications! However, if I stick to this regime, which is basically fresh meat, poultry and fish, lots of green leafy vegies, a citrus fruit and some other sort of fruit, berries, a pear, or an apple, every day, limiting dairy to a little cream in coffee, or a little cheese with apple for a snack, small helpings of non-gluten grains every other day, wild rice, buck wheat kasha or pancakes, quinoa pilaf, teff or oat porridge, or a smallish piece of cornbread, or teff…I will feel much better, I know I will feel much better, but with all these choices, our culture still pushes this set of things I am trying to cut back on – bread, sodas, candy, processed meats, cheese, so there is a constant background hum in my head of don’t eat this crap that will make you feel bad. It’s tiring. 🙂

It’s a lot of work eating healthy and sticking to it. But it’s so worth it.
About 15 years ago, I did an elimination diet, followed the same food choices you just listed and my joints never felt better. And my skin cleared up, it had a marvelous glow to it.

Hello all! I am wearing Serge Lutens Borneo 1834. Another day of perfume indecision, so I closed my eyes and applied whatever my hand landed on. I was sorta hoping it’d be Ambre Sultan but here we are. 🙂

I should call my old roomie, who was from the mid-west and made delicious pies, especially peach. I was fortunate to have an uncle whose house bordered on a large peach farm on Long Island. Growing up, we had plenty of peaches, syrupy sweet nectar dripping from our chins and fingertips.

I ordered some fall samples from Lucky Scent and they arrived yesterday.
Zoologist Chipmunk: oh how I wanted to like this, but Chippy turned out to be a big meh on me. I got some woodsy smell, but no nut, no leave mulch. It wasn’t very impressive and faded very quickly. Strike one on samples.
Hiram Green Hyde: SMOKE! Smoke smoke smoke. Roll around in the dead ashes smoke. Not much else? This type of scent is usually right up my alley but it’s ALL smoke. No subtlety or nuance, no depth, just overwhelming ash. Who wants to smell like that for a perfume? Strike two.
Goldfield&Banks Silky Woods: now here’s a delicious scent! Soft wood, slightly powdery. I love it. Yippee! But wait, why does this smell so familiar? Hmm, because it’s almost a carbon copy of SL Daim Blonde!
So familiar I put DB on my other arm. I could hardly tell the difference. Since I have a FB of DaimB I’m not springing for a dupe by another name. Strike three, but it was lovely.

I’m going to make a note of Silky Woods. My bottle of DB is a favorite and I no longer trust Serge Lutens for their changes. When DB is empty I’ll probably replace with Silky Woods.

Wearing L’Ombre de Merveilles today. I know it didn’t seem to get a lot of love, but I really like it. It is like the dark side of the original, to me.

Didn’t Ben and Jerry’s do a Willie Nelson Peach Cobbler ice cream or something like that? That would really hit the spot today. Sigh. It was probably one of their limited editions.

In two, tiny spritzes of the ginger bicky today. Yes, a Jo Malone I would buy, and at full price, so am hoping it really will be turning up as a seasonal scent come November because I will rush to order it.

Today is my first day back at work, seeing all my coworkers. You all understand how important it is to have some reassuring scent, and it has to be quite gentle and unobtrusive in case there really is a no-scent policy now.

OJ Frangipani, since the humidity level has risen.

Ordered a foldable queen platform bed frame for a guest coming soon. Had to give directions to a new FedEx driver, who got confused by our place, which Google still doesn’t acknowledge. He found us. Now I have to clean the guest room out to set things up.

So you will put away the frame when you don’t have guests, is that the idea? Anyway, good luck getting everything settled 🙂

Yes. That’s the plan, until we determine a more permanent guest solution. Right now we have a queen air mattress and I’ll add a foam topper. But it’s too low to the ground for adults….

Another beautiful day here in the PNW rain forest. I’m in SSS Forest Walk from yesterday afternoon, which I’m sure will continue wafting all day without having to re-spritz. This stuff lasts forever..!

T-Rex is giving me the big eyes and the tap, tap, tap with her paw that clearly communicates she’d like her breakfast, sooner rather than later thank you very much, so I’m off to feed her, then walkies for both of us.

    Happy Tuesday! ✌?

I loaded up in the last sale so I’m sitting this one out, but it’s a nice deal. They have some on sale at Indiescents right now as well. I’m waiting for the black Friday sale (which she calls pink Friday) to get myself a 100ml bottle of Freeway, plus she has a new Saltburn Driftwood fragrance in the works that sounds interesting. There’s also an almond variant on Over the Chocolate Shop I’m curious about.

I’m in a few hefty spritzes of Badlands, from Scotch Porter. I love three out of the four fragrances from this line (Miami Duppy didn’t work for me, sadly, though it should have). Glenwood is my absolute favorite, but Badlands has a really bright, uplifting quality to it that I needed today.

One of the best things about working from home is the ability to lay on the perfume without worrying about anybody else’s nose!

What am I going to wear today? Chinatown. My backup arrived today anyway.
So I have just been browsing through different perfume house websites and besides me needing more of Swan Princess and wanting to try Blue Tea, I also have been mesmerized by THoO’s Unique collection especially the Red Storm. That one features ginger top notes, ginger blossom heart and… Candied ginger heart. I LOVE when my favorite ingredients notes repeat themselves in different forms or stages of the perfume. I want to try the Royal Stone too. Also I have ventured into Bond no.9’s website and decided that by description the Dubai collection really intrigues me. Especially Garnet and Jade. Maybe even Citrine. Anyways so now I wanna try these well-above average and pricey perfumes. Yes way to go for me as I am not rich at all.

Testing Elizabeth & James Nirvana Rose today. Ordered a sample to get free shipping on another purchase, and trying to decide if I want to snag a FB while they are still available. I really like their White and Black, and love their Bourbon. I thought the Rose would be a no brainer for me, but I was not into it when it first came out. I get a mixture of fresh rose petals (bouquet fresh, not still-on-the-vine fresh) mixed with dried potpourri rose petals, patchouli, and vetiver. Reminds of a stripped down version of POAL with vetiver.

Drinking black tea mixed with Nutcracker Rooibos.

    SOTD = YSL Tuxedo

4 spritzes did not last long in this heat. But the few hours it lasted, the amber patchouli with flecks of rose and salt and a vanilla drydown makes this quite an interesting perfume. I’ll wear it once more in the heat (8 sprays!), then dial back to 4 when it’s much cooler out!

It’s been a crazy day and I don’t feel like logging back in again to finish something for which I gave everyone else a deadline of today. Oh well.

Not quite perfume but certainly, smell-related since it was from Barh and Body Works – notcaturday! What do you think – ?? ?? ?? Or something else? ?

That backpack is too cute!! And that’s a very handsome Tuxedo decant, I’m impressed.

I’m excited to say, with your hints, I was able to sleuth out Ms. Sandlewood!!!! ? It’s even worse than I imagined, I couldn’t believe she would misspell the word when it’s part of the name of a fragrance. The horror. Plus, I agree, it definitely looks like there are many undisclosed gifted bottles. Very “suss”, as my middle schooler would say.

Wore a few sprays of Datura Noir. Barely sprayed it but I can still pick up a bit even 8+ hours later. Potent stuff! I also noticed the coolness in the air today so Fall is coming.

Yesterday I wore a couple patch-forward scents; I think it’s a better note for me if it’s well blended in the mix. I even tried to dilute them with hand sanitizer but it didn’t work! Maybe those are better in the middle of Winter..

Finally a chance to breathe. The first two days of school have been absolutely bananas. My SOTD was No. 5 L’Eau. Very glad to be wearing something light when the AC decided to quit. On a 95 degree day. With 2700 people in the building.

Late to the party but earlier I wore Jo Loves Green Orange & Coriander because I was in the mood for its comforting mineral note. I’m not sure why I think of this perfume as comforting or just very comfortable to wear maybe. Just switched over to St. Clair First Cut.
