Thursday scent of the day 8/19

Posted by Robin on 19 August 2021 137 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also World Humanitarian Day, International Orangutan Day, National Aviation Day and Coco Chanel’s birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Diptyque Philosykos. It's not so much that I wasn't a fan of fig perfumes before Philosykos, it's just that I was not aware they existed.

Reminder: on 8/20, wear the first scent that made you a fan of a particular note. Suggested by PriscillaE.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

The new SL perfume Fille de Joie is also VERY much a honey perfume, with some jasmine. It’s heavy but worth trying if you enjoy honey.

Do you mean Fils de Joie? If so, I can definitely second that recommendation, the jasmine is gorgeous. Serge does jasmine so well.

SOTD is Love Don’t Be Shy by Killian.
Today’s image is commonly known as an Angel Trumpet. I have a yellow one in my garden. They are picky picky to grow here in the upper Midwest but I love them. The bees LOVE them.
And in honor of Aviation Day, later today I’ll drink an Aviation cocktail! Maybe two, return flight you know.?

Minneapolis. Location (southern facing near warm foundation), winter mulching (heavy!) and crossed fingers are required for growth.

Well, goodness, methinks I must wear Chanel No. 19 to wish Coco a happy birthday.

Going with friends tonight to the local cooking school. Tonight’s class is focused on smoked meat. Here’s the menu:
Smoked Duck and White Bean Crostini and Bacon Jam
    Bacon Pasta Carbonara
    Pilsner Braised Chicken and Kale
Bacon Honey Roasted Vegetables with Rosemary Honey
    Maple Cookie with Crisp Bacon

Not sure which dish(es) we will focus on creating. So much for my getting back on the WW horse…. I’m also doing two more classes – one in Sept and one in Oct. My advance b’day present to myself.

With you in Chanel No. 19! I also wore it because I expected a challenging day at work, and it always makes me feel a little feistier. It might even have counted for CP, since it was the first fragrance that really made me fall in love with green notes.

I love Fig, one of my favorite notes in Perfumery! My SOTD is Fig & Poppy by Speziali Fiorentini, crisp and green – one of my favorite fig perfumes!
I have an early student orientation 9am, so finalizing paperwork.

Should be high summer, but feels fallish here in Michigan, very cool nights, not so humid during the day. Wearing Diorissimo, circa 2007 bottle, pretty but a little watered down version. LOTV is one of my favorite scents. I am contemplating getting a bottle of the new Dragonfly, kicking myself for not getting one of the originals.

It has felt fallish here too in some ways…really just the angle of the light. It’s otherwise humid as all get out here.

      Anyway, you smell great.

Sotd is Aedes de Venustas Signature which began my love of rhubarb and tomato leaf in fragrance.

When I first smelled it, it opened a whole new world of what fragrance can be and from that point on, there’s been no turning back.

Along the same foody lines, I fell in love with fig when I first met Figuier Extreme, Philosykos and most recently Libertine Eros Fig. I feel another deep dive coming…

SOTD is the tragically discontinued Mandarine Glaciale, which turned me on to ginger. Not that I was ever turned off by it, but I hadn’t really given it much thought as a potential favorite before MG.

Thanks for the well wishes from everyone yesterday! I successfully avoided dry socket. Healing seems to be going fine, but my jaw’s still tender. Surviving on soft food 🙂

SOTD is Arquiste Sydney Rock Pool from a generous NSTer. I get coconut, a sweet-and-sour frangipani, seaweed, and then a mixture of undefined notes that smell like skin sweaty from the sun. There are at least two notes that are creating dissonance for me, not sure if it is the coconut and frangipani, the skin accord, or the reported ambertonic (I’m not sure I could identify that note), but they are crashing into one another without melding into a single perfume. So I keep sniffing, which is engaging, but also frustrating because I can’t figure it out. I’m about 2 hours in, so maybe they will get on the same wavelength and meld further into the dry down.

Continuing to drink my way through the English Breakfast bags, but I’m doing it with a new pretty teapot — the one Robin posted last week. 🙂 My lemming is very happy.

I have and wear Sydney Rock Pool and the note I get is lemongrass…after the coconut, salt and (possibly) lime. I should see what the actual notes are as it is a strange scent.

Oh, that’s interesting. I don’t encounter lemongrass often, so that wouldn’t have occurred to me as one of the notes. Today’s sprays have worn off, but I’m adding this to my notes and will look for lemongrass the next time I wear it. Thanks Kanuka!

Out of curiosity, does it come across as discordant to you?

I learned recently that discordant musical notes have sound waves that do not line up in an order way. IOW, the physical sound waves are out harmony when they reach our ear drums, so the discomfort they cause is not just in what we hear, but also in what we feel from the sound waves. I wouldn’t be surprised if scents have a similar physical effect on us.

    Hello all!

I’m in Voyage d’Hermes today, practically a nostalgic perfume for me. I remember accidently dropping my sample in a Blockbuster during their closing sale…. I see Voyage as a variation of Angelique sous la pluie, and I greatly prefer the Hermes.

Diptyque Philosykos was also my first fig fragrance!
It made me so happy, and brought back childhood memories of climbing the fig tree in my grandparents’ backyard!
But, gradually I realized that it was the scent of the tree and the leaves that I loved, and Philosykos was a bit too coconutty for me.

I have enjoyed MANY fig fragrances, but my favorite right now is Armani Figuier Eden. It is fruity, but dry. To me, it smells like a fig tree warmed by the sun. Yummy!

I’m reaching very far back with my SOTD which is BPAL’s nothing Gold can stay from their Halloween line back in 2010! My small bottle has held up magnificently and still just smells the best kind of autumnal green. Seemed perfect for an August day that’s not supposed to get above 65°!

All this rain has been lovely! The air is so clean! Also, very funny that Nothing Gold has held up so well! I think the rest of my BPAL oils just straight up smell like cinnamon now, whether or not that was originally in the notes list… I can’t complain I used most of the bottles and they’re all at least 9 years old.

Had to be in Cali for work from Sunday-yesterday evening. Only took some Mugler cologne and Assam of India because I was in the desert most of the time and it was insanely hot. I did get to go to the Korean spa and get scrubbed and rubbed, soaked and steamed and eat some delish Korean food. Looove Koreatown in LA.

So I’m back home working today and am in vintage Cabochard for a cool, rainy day here in CO.

I’m in Tam Dao, my gateway to sandalwood in perfumery. Before falling down the rabbit hole, my brain linked “sandalwood” to the overly scented candles Pier 1 used to stock back in the 70s. Imagine my surprise when I learned how beautiful it actually smells.

I was sampling A Drop D’Issey but I couldn’t get past the annoying synthetic opening so post shower I’m in Cognoscenti 17 Civet Chypre which will hopefully not be distracting for my first driving lesson in 30+ years.

SOTD = Lancôme La Vie Est Belle Intensement

There was no doubt I had to wear this today as my hand was reaching for No.19.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CSw9tlrrly-/?utm_medium=copy_link

    Rants:
    – How do you spell “sandalwood”? Other than a potential misspelling, would you keep doing it if someone asked you (privately) why you’re spelling it “sandlewood” and the answer you got back was “it’s all the same”? No, it’s not all the same and it makes you look not smart, especially for an “Influencer” although I am not judging this on this rant.
    – Why am I hearing more about the events in AFGH from our CEO than from the highest levels of this country? ?
    – Our Diversity organization recently published a Style Guide with 94 words and phrases to use and not use, but the list looks like it was edited by someone who was schooled only on one side of the spectrum. And, funnily enough (or not), comments were cut off after half a day instead of the normal 5 days. It seems that whenever there’s a controversial topic, employees are cut off from providing feedback. Censorship much?

Okay, I want to smell that LVEB Intensement, it’s causing such a furor, even though I loathe the original.

I saw a document recently where the guy repeatedly spelled satellite as satallite. Makes you wonder if they’ve been living under a rock for the last 30 years.

A sunny morning here, one thing I do like about working from home is the morning sunshine – I’m probably repeating myself, because there is very little I like about it!
Mitsouko turned me on to chypres once it finally clicked for me, but I wore Mitsouko quite recently, so it will be Jubilation 25. This was a purchase that quickly followed my sudden love of Mitsouko.

Mmm, Jubilation 25 is gorgeous, and I’m not even a chypre person! I liked working from home, it was nice to be outside in the middle of the day in between tasks.

    Hello Good Smelling Folks!
It’s been a minute since I was here! It’s been a CRAZY few months (some sickness and drama in the family, now over and all resolved!) so perfume went off my radar for a while. Summer is also my least favorite season to wear fragrance too, but I’ve definitely been sampling and wearing all this time….

Anyhoo, wearing Hermes Un Jardin Sur Le Toit today and it’s almost faded completely now.

Hope y’all are all doing well! Looking forward to jumping back into NST with renewed energy and scents! 🙂

Inspired by Cicely’s layering of l’Heure Bleue with Cuir Beluga the other day, I’m wearing l’HB layered with Chanel Jersey. It works!

I had to stop by work (in person) yesterday, and managed to squeeze in a visit to Nordstrom before I had to pick my son up from school. Finally got to try Édimbourg! I like it a lot, but it’s faint. It is an “eaux” so I shouldn’t be surprised, but I think the others in the line were stronger on me. I also randomly spritzed on Sisley’s Soir d’Orient, which I enjoyed a lot. Wish I had gotten a sample of it, since who knows when I’ll venture to the store again!

My neighbour’s daffodil finally opened yesterday. The first bloom of spring and such a slow opening, days and days of waiting and watching (me). I like how daffodils really do ‘nod’ in the breeze. A grape hyacinth has flowered in my garden, too. And the mornings are definitely lighter. Still very chilly though, and the branches on the tree outside cut a stark outline. Wearing Bois de Vanille today. No reason, just because it was there. Keep cool and well everyone!

Those car mats were pretty much a deathknell to perfume rights. At least they have brought you joy! I am good. Unhooked from iv antibiotics so at least I can scratch my nose more easily. My walking stick is my new best friend and things are looking up in terms of healing and wound related stuff. So, all good! Thank you

I am twins with allo in Aedes de Venustas, the gateway to rhubarb. Now I have Rhubarb Ecarlate too, for hotter days when I want rhubarb. Bertie Wooster is sleeping on my lap and it’s been a productive day.

I’m wearing Memo TIger’s Nest, and am a bit inadvertently CP compliant since the dominant note is amber, and that is the first note I explored in a semi-serious way when I began getting more “into” perfumes. Prior to that I had tried and liked a variety of perfumes, but without much of any focus. In retrospect my favorite notes seem to have been in the citrus family. But I began the rabbit hole journey by buying perfume note sample sets way back when and amber was the very first one, as I recall–soon to be followed by fig. I still love both notes. Hope everyone is having a good day. I recently passed a “big number” birthday in a simple way by enjoying a dinner out with a friend. Our Covid situation is pretty bad here in Texas and I’m becoming a lot more hesitant to go anywhere for awhile again. At least in the drug store where I just went I’d say the mask ratio was about 90% of people there. I’m feeling for my colleagues who have to go back to full-class in-person teaching with no mask or vaccination mandates. Glad to be retired.

I never knew I loved vetiver until SL Vetiver Oriental, even though that is an unusual one. I thought I would be wearing Fat Electrician all week, but it didn’t do well in the heat for me. Today it’s Lancôme Climat, which is stretching it, but most of my vetivers are firmly in the fall/winter category.

Oh! My CP choice tomorrow will be vetiver related. I too love Vetiver Oriental. I feel like I love many of the unusual vetivers without having tried some of the more iconic ones, like Guerlain Vetiver and Encre Noire and Sycomore. I have to add Fat Electrician to the sample list!

I’m in Escentric 2 again. It just works so well for me and I don’t have the bandwith to debate between perfumes. I may copy tiffanie and start a “this is what I wear during the work week” plan until things calm down.
