By Kilian Apple Brandy on the Rocks & L’Heure Verte ~ new fragrances

Posted by Robin on 18 August 2021 11 Comments

French niche line By Kilian will launch Apple Brandy on the Rocks and L’Heure Verte in September. The two fragrances join Roses on Ice and Angels' Share in the Liquors collection.

Apple Brandy on the Rocks ~ Possibly a straight relaunch of 2013's Apple Brandy, which was a New York exclusive. "Kilian Hennessy worked with perfumer Sidonie Lancesseur on this fragrance inspired by the historical American spirit: apple brandy. This scent is a new addition to the brand olfactive portfolio: a fruity fougere." With "on the rocks accord", bergamot, apple brandy, cedar and ambroxan. [Update: "Apple Brandy was first conceived with perfumer Sidonie Lancesseur for the opening of KILIAN PARIS’s New York flagship eight years ago. The fragrance returns, featuring the original apple brandy core but, this time, with an added uplift—KILIAN PARIS’s signature “on the rocks” accord blended into the opening for an ice-cold liquored delight expressing a uniquely KILIAN PARIS character. A blend of bergamot, apple brandy and cardamon, the accord cools down the original, adding excitement and modernity."]

L’Heure Verte ~ "Kilian Hennessy worked with perfumer Mathieu Nardin on L’HEURE VERTE a new fragrance inspired by the sulfurous French spirit of the cursed poets: Absinthe." Additional notes for the aromatic fragrance include cypress, violet leaf, licorice, patchouli and vetiver. [Update: "Absinthe essence opens L’Heure Verte with an instant head twist into a nostalgic heart of violet leaf and licorice root absolute. Its dry-down articulates a unique and precisely chosen facet of patchouli that resonates throughout, and blends into a trio of earthy woods along with vetiver and sandalwood. A first-time collaboration between Founder Kilian Hennessy and French perfumer Mathieu Nardin, L’Heure Verte expresses Paris at its best—indulgent and life-changing in its luxuries and wonderful illusions."] [Another update: In 2023 L’Heure Verte was renamed Fièvre Verte (green fever).]

By Kilian Apple Brandy on the Rocks and L’Heure Verte will be available in 50 ml Eau de Parfum, in refillable bottles.

I like Apple Brandy too, in fact it’s one of the few I like from the brand. But don’t know if it is the same. And I’m sure it costs more than I think it’s worth 😉

Love the bottle style. Did not love my bottle of Angel’s Share. Love the sound of L’Heure Verte.

But that word “sulfurous” (perhaps a poor translation?) gives one pause.

True – maybe they were trying for a suggestion of absinthe being sinful, close to hell-fire and brimstone sulfurous, rather than rotten eggs sulfurous, which is where my mind went, and then was puzzled – Absinthe doesn’t really smell like rotten eggs, does it? LOL! Any French speakers with a suggestion as to what colloquial term was used and what they were trying to say?

Yes, I can confirm that sulfureux in French does not refer to the rotten egg smell… more like steamy and risqué. 🙂

“Sulfurous” and “cursed” in the same phrase is a definite turn-off! I do love the smell of absinthe, but these are not the kinds of adjectives I’d reach for to describe it!

“On the rocks accord.” But doesn’t on the rocks mean…ice? Which has no scent?

Many fragrances have used ice/snow accords. The L’artisan ‘Terra Glacialis’ from a couple of years ago also used absinthe, vetiver & an ice accord.
