Frederic Malle Synthetic Jungle ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 17 August 2021 13 Comments

French niche line Frédéric Malle has launched Synthetic Jungle, the brand's first fragrance from perfumer Anne Flipo.

Bright and lush, mysterious and provocative, Synthetic Jungle is a stylized landscape in technicolor greens. An ode to cult perfumes of the 1970s, Synthetic Jungle offers a modern vision of nature reimagined.

Flipo retained the opulent basil of the original composition,* along with a recomposed bouquet of hyacinth, lily of the valley, natural jasmine, and Ylang Ylang oil.

To modernize and sharpen, she then added synthetic black currant and styralyl acetate, effectively putting the bouquet through a glossy, sparkling filter. Flipo simplified the Chypre and leather notes, resulting in a cleaner, more streamlined accord. Finally, she added patchouli.

Additional notes include galbanum.

Frédéric Malle Synthetic Jungle is available in 10, 30 50 and 100 ml Eau de Parfum, £38 - £195. (There is also a 7 ml sample, but it is currently out of stock.)

* The text at Liberty says "An ode to the distinctive cult perfumes of the '70s, Synthetic Jungle presents a modern vision of nature, reimagined; a stylised landscape in technicolour greens. Retaining the opulent basil note found in the original compositions..."

In the video for the fragrance, Malle mentions two fragrances from the 1970s that made an impression on him, Chanel No. 19 and Estée Lauder Private Collection, and says he suggested that Flipo work from Private Collection and "take certain aspects that we liked, remove those that didn't feel right, and come up with something different."

Not sure why you’re sold on it just because he mentioned Private Collection, when he told her to take Private Collection as a starting point & then ‘make something different’ so will undoubtedly smell absolutely nothing at all like PC !

Not a fan of green scents, but will give it a sniff anyway out of curiosity.

I love green, don’t love PC, really like a lot of Anne Flipo’s niche work, especially for L’Artisan. So I am interested 🙂

So interesting. Neither am I–I mean there are green perfumes I like, but then I rarely want to wear them. And there are big classic greens that I liked when I began my perfume journey, and now don’t enjoy so much. And I find a lot of modern green scents totally unappealing. I thought I was alone in this!

Private Collection is one of my favorite perfumes so I am intrigued and interested. I also love Chanel 19.
It definitely sounds like a tribute to 70’s green perfumes.
The Private Collection Jasmine Ylang Ylang was also a nice tribute but was discontinued.
I have the feeling, though Malle is part of the Estée Lauder group, that they are still producing all of their catalogue, unlike Kilian and their own. Am I wrong ?

Yes, Malle was acquired by EL in 2014.

It makes sense to me that there are discontinuations at EL & Kilian, since they release far more product.

Malle has announced a couple of discontinuations, namely Dries Van Noten and Superstitious.

They had me at “cult perfumes of the 70s.” Oh, and the words “chypre” and “leather.” And basil, and galbanum.

Really late to the party on this one, but here goes: I was given a generous sample of this, but, alas, it’s not for me. Maybe I’m too easily swayed by the name, but the artificial aspect of this doesn’t work for me. The galbanum-basil green has a plastic quality which is very penetrating. (The image above does seem very apt.)
