Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, mid-August 2021

Posted by Robin on 14 August 2021 171 Comments

The dog days of summer are over, but you wouldn't know it from the weather here. We're soldiering on with our standard open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the best fragrance for forgetting all your troubles, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Morning all! It’s only 8:30 and humidity is 83%. 😯 It’s going to be an up-do kind of day as my curly mane won’t cooperate.

My SOTD is remnants of yesterday’s bedtime perfume, Sweet Patchouli by Eva Luxe. I’ll layer Annick Goutal’s Musc Nomade over it, discreet and powdery.
I have a new pair of sneakers (Hoka One One) so headed to the gym to break them in! Mr. SmokeyToes and I will head out for a walk before the heat gets too bad.

I’ve had stick-straight hair all my life (perfect in the 60s) but was always envious of girls with curls. Took until my forties before I realized what a blessing straight hair could be.

I so wanted to be Peggy Lipton or at least look like her. But I have curly brown hair. So, nope.

Peggy Lipton was so gorgeous – probably still is. In my younger days I looked more like Joni Mitchell on the cover of the Clouds album. 🙂

I’m in the ‘between’ stages of too short and ‘just perfect’ for a ponytail.
I went overboard at my last cut – my hair hadn’t been cut in 18 months, the stylist chopped off over 12 inches of hair.

Visited a mall in what seems like forever. Discovered a tiny perfume shop and purchased a long-lost love, Simply, by Clinique. It’s a little strange, fresh, with melon (from calone) but warm, with a note of soy milk and musk. It’s not ground-breaking, but it’s comforting, cozy, and clean.

Thanks! And I’m enjoying a few spritzes before I head to the gym. I forgot how enjoyable this scent was/is.
I went online and read some reviews, this morning I definitely got a licorice note (love!!) that I’d never smelled previously.

Woke up to a blissful 63 degrees and promptly threw open a few windows to capture the coolth. Am now enjoying my coffee in a spritz of Paracelsus and pretending it’s autumn, before things heat up to the predicted high of 90. ?

SOTD is a hotch pitch of samples

Delina exklusiv – meh, don’t understand the hype. Smells like fruity sweeties and pigtails.
Carven Dans Ma Bulle – more meh.
Twilly – I’ve fallen for that one. It’s just right for a certain kind of carefree mood on a sunny day.

    Happy weekend everyone!

SOTD is L’Heure Bleue + Cuir Beluga. I read somewhere that it makes a good impression of Iris Ganache and indeed the overall smell reminds me of my sample!

I have been a bit worried about the discontinuation of my beloved L’Art et la Matiere, it seems they will bring most back in new bottles. I don’t like change…? enjoying my Guerlains this week.

    Happy weekend! ☀️?

The Saks confirmed this. They are not getting more stock but there are still quite a few that can be decanted into the bee bottles. I have all the back-ups I need (mmmm….k, want) although that green bee bottle is calling my name ?.

Hajusuuri, I have also got back ups of my favourites from the line this week. I really hope Guerlain won’t be making any changes to their way of making perfume. It is one of the few houses that really works for me.

Yeah, I love those colored bee bottles, but with all my backups in the regular bottles I couldn’t justify a purchase. I haven’t heard if any scents will be discontinued, and I’m glad to see two new ones along with the return of Bois d’Arménie. If you did get the green bee bottle, which scent would you have it filled with? 😉

I adore Rose Barbare! It is such a beauty. But I can’t justify spending that kind of cash.
I admit get more than a little disappointed (read… cranky) seeing companies d/c scents or revamp and re-release and charge more $$ for the same juice.

It seems to have worked for Serge Lutens. Except for the name changes, this is a direct steal from the Lutens playbook. It just seems to be the way things are done now: change the bottles and make ’em bigger, jack up the prices, cheapen the formulae, and damn the devoted customer base.

Am I bitter? Yeah, I’m bitter.

Absolutely. Serge Lutens in the concept, Tom Ford in the shape of the bottles if you have seen them… some clever marketing people at Guerlain. I really hope they don’t mess up with the formulas. I thought very little of the last two allegorias.

        • kpaint says:
          14 August 2021 at 6:05 pm

I was primarily thinking of the name changes.

I’m all for changing bottle styles, as it makes it easier to pinpoint the era when shopping for used/vintage.

In the case of Guerlain, however, a lot of their bottles have a history, so it’s a bit sad (though I’m not referring to the art & materials here, obviously.) I personally never want to spray Shalimar from a bee bottle. Or accidentally spray something else because it looks identical to the one sitting next to it.

But I also don’t understand it from a marketing perspective. I can’t imagine going to a Guerlain counter and being faced with dozens and dozens of identical bottles. I’d just walk away if I were a less informed consumer – which most are.

I agree, a lot of the fun is the individuality of the bottles. I mean, Shalimar is famous, I adore Mahora also a favorite, as is Samsara.

          • Cicely says:
            15 August 2021 at 3:02 pm

Yes… they are losing something that made them distinctive, the different and exciting bottle designs going back in history. Now they’re no different than Tom Ford, Chanel, Dior or Lancome. Luxury bottles all identifiable by large volumes and uniformity.

I also loved the packaging of the elixirs and art et la matiere collections so sad to see them go..

    • tulipani says:
      14 August 2021 at 3:11 pm

Yes, this news of re-packaging and price increase for the L’Art et Matiere line is most upsetting! I have full bottles of all my absolute must-haves, so I’m not hunting for any back ups. The only one I might want more of is Cuir Beluga, but I have a good size decant and don’t need a full bottle. Overall, it’s very off-putting and distasteful, all this money grubbing!

I’ve never tried Iris Ganache and have always been curious, so thanks for your layering suggestion! I will try it as soon as the weather cools a bit. 😀

They have repackaged many in the Mitsouko and L’Heure Bleue bottles I think… insolence, samsara etc don’t come in the bee bottles anymore. And they have a very Tom Ford-like design for the more luxury lines.

I was touched by your words for her the other day, that she is your other half.☺️ It reminded me of the relationship I observe between my two girls- 21 and almost 16- they are like peas and carrots those two. It’s another picture perfect weather day. My h and I were up early and went to our neighborhood farmer’s market. Then we enjoyed a cup of coffee/chai at an outdoor patio. Not much else on my agenda today except enjoying the weather and some family time.?

I think I like Kai a tad bit better, I get a more clear gardenia note from it. If you like gardenia, I was going to recommend Terra Nova’s Gardenia but the company (Nectarine) officially closed shop in March 2021. I was able to track down a few of the perfume oils, China Musk, Gardenia, and Taire Lei. They had fantastic body products, the shower gels and lotions were enjoyable.

I’ve been so curious about the extreme too. I’ve checked a couple times on the L’Artisan site and they don’t have that sample available. Most frustrating! I also dislike that they only allow you to “purchase” 2 samples at a time. Purchase in quotes because they are technically free but you have to pay $11 for shipping.

I have a bottle – it’s a stronger version of the edt, with a more pronounced vanilla note. It loses some of the transparency of the original, but this is L’Artisan and Giacobetti so you couldn’t call it heavy or dense!

    SOTD = Sultan Pasha Irisoir

One of the best iris / orris butter out there!

I left work slightly early yesterday to go sniffing at Saks, with my main goal being Le Labo. To my consternation, the City Exclusives were not yet available, but I did get to smell the new one for Berlin – Cedrat 37 and sadly for my wallet, it smells pretty darn good! It is slightly salty, limey and gingery. I stopped by Aesop and smelled the latest trio – meh – smelled thin to me and they all have a base that smells damp earthy and not in a good way. I also stopped by Guerlain; nothing interesting other than there’s a green bee bottle that’s calling my name. Let’s see how I do next week when the store has its gift card event.

In other news, I am meeting up with family for takeout dinner later. When I placed my order, the order-taker said we don’t have x anymore because they were sold out yesterday. Ummm, don’t they talk about making things fresh? It was okay since I really wanted something that was all vegetables anyway and they are able to accommodate. I also ordered dessert and was told they have run out of the container! Seriously, who is minding the shop inventory? We did agree that it was fine to use an alternate container, for which I have to pay an extra $0.50 each. Since it was a small mom & pop, I did not challenge it. Looking forward to the meal as they do a great job!

And for the Caturday fans, enjoy:

I’ve been seeing weird packaging shortages in our area. We were collecting boxes at liquor stores for the last push to empty my dad’s house recently, and two of the stores had limits on how many boxes we could take. They had run out of paper bags and had to keep the boxes for customers. The cajun place down the road was short on take out boxes, too.
But still, they shouldn’t have charged you extra for a to go box! That’s just wrong.

Shalimar body lotion followed by the Eau de Cologne.

Gorgeous day here, but my husband is feeling pretty crummy. Probably side effects to a new medication. Sigh. I feel good, despite staying up a bit late. I finished watching La Mante on Netflix. Caught the end of Klute on TCM, which was followed by Barbarella. I’d never seen the latter so stayed up for some of it but decided it wasn’t worth staying up till the end. I hit “record” so I can see the end if I feel inclined.

Laundry and may try to do the zucchini bread. I need some ingredients.

I should have recorded Klute–one of my favorite vintage movies (although I saw it when it first came out!!). I enjoyed my extra zucchini chopped up with an onion, butter, a ton of basil and olive oil over pasta!!! …and a squeeze of lemon, yes!!

I never think about Barbarella without thinking about my folks. They were seeing it in the theater and Mom was pregnant with my youngest sister. She started having contractions during the movie and had to nudge my dad a couple of times to get him to leave and take her to the hospital! ?

I’m sad today. Nanci Griffith passed away yesterday. I’ve been listening to her music since the early 80’s. Her Storms album helped me process my divorce and still is probably my favorite of all her work. Here’s a live version of a tune from that album.

I’m very sad about her passing – what a great loss. I was in a local band for awhile and loved singing her songs, especially Across the Great Divide and From a Distance. And Once in a Very Blue Moon is so beautiful and haunting – “I found your letter in my mailbox today…”

I found out last night. My father reminded me that I took him to one of her concerts when I was in law school, and Adam Duritz joined her on stage. Her albums were definitely a big part of the sound track of my 20s and falling in love with my now husband. “Love at the Five and Dime” was on our wedding playlist.

A troubling ad (for me) for Hermes Cavalier jewelry in our WSJ today. Surprising to me as I think it objectifies the model as well as suggests something unappealing (androgynous looking female model with long chain necklace). I’m decidedly not the target audience, however. Did anyone else see this and have thoughts?

I only ask about the Hermes ad as I usually think highly of their perfumes, but this makes me rethink that the same way potentially glorifying addiction was unappealing to me (thinking Dior Addict’s original ads).

The signs of spring are increasing. It’s been a mild winter, but still winter, and I’ve had enough of that. The sun is shining this morning, and the first flowers are coming out on the neighbours’ magnolia tree.
We’ll be off for a long walk shortly, and I’ll spray a little of my new Encens Satin. Somone asked receently which Armani Privé I have – Rose Alexandrie, Rose d’Arabie, Myrrhe Impériale, Bois d’Encens, Ambre Eccentrico and now Encens Satin. They are over-priced, but it’s a range with quite a few that really seem to work for me. And I’ve bought most of them overseas, so there is some added excitement 🙂

The air quality and heat both improved today, so I got out for a walk earlier. I also walked up and down one of our massive sets of stairs in the neighborhood, and boy are my legs feeling it. I only usually walk up these stairs and then continue on a walk from there, but coming back down works a whole different set of muscles and my legs felt like jelly for a while after. Countered my healthy activity with a fried fish sandwich from our local burger place since it is a special for this week only. Panko crusted halibut, tomatoes, pickled red onions, and charred corn aioli – it was so tasty! Now all showered and clean about to start up Vertigo. Wearing House of Matriarch Sex Magic from a bottle I bought at a special launch party for the line in 2013. It was the first perfume event I attended after moving to Seattle! Lately, I’ve been rooting around in my boxes of perfume to wear my bottles I’ve had for a while. Shopping my collection is definitely helped me not feel the urge to sample or buy much right now.

Back home from the weekend of adventures. Went on the pontoon boat; it was a bit smoky but not nearly as hot as expected. Yesterday I walked the golf course (and also did my “caddie duties”). After golf we went to the beach for a few hours.

My work friend asked if I was interested in peaches from her tree; yes please! We picked about 20 pounds on the way home. Also got some lovely cherry tomatoes and finally got to meet her beautiful new puppy, a miniature Aussie Shepherd. So darned cute!

Off to shower and put on something fabulous after being mostly scentfree all weekend.

I know! We will have to give some away to neighbours.

It was so nice to have a fun weekend for a change.
