Thursday scent of the day 7/29

Posted by Robin on 29 July 2021 198 Comments

It's Almost-Friday and International Tiger Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Parfums de Nicolaï Balle de Match, later renamed L'Eau de Sport, then possibly discontinued (I don't want to look, but I think I read that in a comment here). I do sorta wish I had a backup bottle? But I might never drain this one. Either way, I'm smelling awfully nice for a long day of chores.

Reminder: on 7/30 we're doing BUB Frenzy. Wear a fragrance that inspired you to buy a backup bottle (or that you wish you wish you had a backup bottle of, or you're thinking about buying a backup bottle). Adapted from a suggestion by chocolatemarzipan8.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I would of course wear Tyger Tyger if I had it. But no such luck, so I will wear Diptyque Tempo instead.

Lacoste Elegance, which is not actually anything I think of as elegant (although the bottle is). It is novel, though: it has a loud and clear raspberry note, not something you’re used to in a men’s scent. It’s a bit jarring for a while but it eventually settles down into a warm, soft oriental.

Hi Robin!! (As usual with Your SotD) I clicked on Your review of Balle de Match from 2006. Out of curiosity, is it the same bottle You were never able to drain in all these years?

To be honest I cannot remember. It might be? Or it might be the 2nd bottle. I did drain bottles faster back then, when I owned fewer fragrances.

    Good morning.
Wearing Tam Dao lightly. I remembered a long time ago I wore Jeux de Peau (is this still in production?) too heavily one summer day and I nearly suffocated myself and since then I got scared of applying sandalwood scents when it’s hot out, but now I am easing way back. Tuberose is also one that I am scared to wear when it’s hot.

This is when I can honestly recommend Nishane’s Tuberoza – tuberose with all lights on BUT juicy and refreshing and amazing.

Started out the day in a wee bit of Chanel Gardenia (my days start around 4 am) but have since sprayed a healthy dose of Dzongkha. They play nicely.

Tigers! A happy coincidence as the paper I’m working on now (the last one for my class) is a memoir/personal essay and it largely features William Blake.

It’s a little sad, but whenever I run across the name William Blake I hear Susan Sarandon in Bull Durham, yelling “I said William Blake!” at Kevin Costner.

I think the same thing (it should be noted, Bull Durham is one of my favorite movies).
I grew up in a town that had a minor league team (Grapefruit league), baseball players were everywhere in the Spring.

Dilettante is my BUB of the day. I jumped all over getting a backup when I heard the news here that it was getting dc’d.
Also backed up HG Shanghai La twice when that one went down. My two favourite Hiram Green’s gone too soon ?

I’m in Assam of India, day 4. Down to the last row of elephants and no plans for a bub, so I am a fail for today.
Woke to the tornado sirens at 1 am. Just a little rain, lightening and wind in my neighborhood. The worst of it was east of us. I had a hard time falling back to sleep though, so kind of dragging today.?

Waiting for a my very own bottle of Enchanted Forest coming in the mail today. Super super super excited. I may never have posted it yet but I always dreamed of having that one. Next on my list is a FB of Swan Princess which shocked me how gorgeous it is. Reminds me of my beloved Bond no.9 Park Avenue but both are different but hit the similar spot for me with their composition.

Ahhhhh, my houseguest has departed. It is fun having visitors, but also nice when they move on. I think my voice needs a few days off to recuperate from so much talking 🙂

    BUBs, I’ve had a few,
But then again, too few to mention

Well probably too many to mention. I did realize that most of my BUBs were not exactly needed, so I divested myself of most of them (*cough* some of them), but I still have a few (or perhaps too many).

SOTD is Pacifica Brazilian Mango Grapefruit, which is my most egregious BUB collection in terms of sheer bottle count. When I realized it was discontinued, I snapped up what I could find. I have: one mini tin of solid perfume; two FB’s (29 ml each, so not exactly enormous); and uhhhh ten rollerballs (10 ml each). That should last me a while, eh? In my defense, it IS one of my most favorite summer scents.

Hello NST friends, my dear Dad died on Monday, and I wanted to say thank you to you all for your kind thoughts, words of comfort and support. He went peacefully, and my brother was with him.
I’m wearing last couple spritzes of 31 Rue Cambon, frustrating that you can’t get samples of Chanel les exclusifes here in the UK anymore, since Chanel clamped down on it,(that’s what I’ve heard is the reason) but I have promised myself a bottle for Christmas. This was one of my few perfumes that makes me think of him and my step mum.
Could anyone reccomend a green oak mossy perfume in the meantime that is either very cheap, or I can get a sample of in the Uk? ?

I’m so sorry, mayfly. I’m glad he went peacefully, and with family by his side. I lost my mother in 2017 and my dad a few years earlier. By the time they passed, it was truly a merciful release for them. My mother (English) used to refer to herself as “the Cat That Walked Alone”, from the Rudyard Kipling story. We believe she no longer walks alone. I hope you find some comfort.

Re green, mossy scents — it doesn’t get much better, or more affordable, than Jacomo’s Silences. I love it. I hope you can find some.

I still haven’t tried Silences, I’m going to have a look now ?

Wearing Guerlain Vetiver Pour Elle. Am using up the second, 125 ml bottle much more slowly than the first. This was *the* go-to summer perfume first time round. Has the formulation changed? Is is that I have so many more perfumes now? Am I irked at having to decant? Is it Fickle Nose Syndrome?

I did that rabbit hole recently! I was somehow discussing Cabaret with my kid and then watched a bunch of clips (after she went to bed) to see if I could show her any. Joel, yes. Alan, probably not so much. 😉 But great fun to watch him! I’ve never smelled any of the Cummings but I should — he seems so delightful that I’d bet his scents are good.

To my nose the 2nd Cumming is exactly the same as the first fragrance. It smells like a sexy library with leather chairs, open decanters of Scotch, and the scent of damp earth blowing in through open windows. Not a shrill note in it anywhere — it makes me want to lick my wrists!

Just the mention of BUB’s made me think of Alchimie by Rochas. Before I fell in the rabbit hole of niche perfumery (back in ’04 with Park Avenue and Chinatown as my first niche perfumes) and when I was 12 years of age I went to a shopping mall and smelled Alchimie. It has completely stolen my heart. Throughout the years (before I knew niche existed) it was my number one. I have ran through at least 10 bottles of it plus even body lotions. Wish I had save one of my BUBs for a time like this: loooong discontinued but also became extremelly rare in the last few years and finding a bottle equals $$$. Alchimie, I do miss You!!

SotD, and in for CP points: Mahora. I have a back up of the edt and a bottle of the parfum. I really like the bottle design, and the parfum has that wonderful mentholated type of tuberose. One of the edt’s came in a gift set, 50ml, a shower gel, and a refillable 7ml purse spray of the parfum. When I opened it, the parfum had leaked and there was just some oily residue. But I wanted it anyway, and even was able to “reconstitute” the parfum residue by spraying some edt into it.

SOTD is Lubin’s Eva. Trying this for the second time (so no BUB on this). The first time I tried it a few weeks ago I had expected it to be sheer and sparkly, but it is more gauzy and perfumey. Going into it with the right expectation this time, I like it more today than I did the first time. it is similar my beloved Grisette, but with neroli instead of rose. And the sandalwood in the dry down works really well. I have enough left in the sample for at least one more wear. After that I may go for a FB.

Wearing Boucheron’s Santal de Kandy–a decant from Royalty Scents. Something in its base reminds me of some of the BDK perfumes, especially the jasmine one. I just looked up the notes and the only posted overlap is jasmine, so it must be some aromachemical that doesn’t translate well into PR.

Wearing Caleche today. It’s the only thing I have even sort of a BUB of. I fell into the rabbit hole when I randomly picked up a tiny sample of the soie de parfum at a yard sale. Then I finished that, and bought a 50mL bottle from the actual store. Then I came across a bottle of Caleche edt (vintage) at a different yard sale, and bought that. Even though they are not quite the same, I think of it as having a BUB. I am wearing the soie de parfum today, and I’ll wear the vintage tomorrow.

On a totally different note, I was inspired by Lovestosmellgood, and stopped off at Nordstrom’s on 57th street on a whim yesterday evening. I tried Paris-Edimbourg and found that it is NOT for me. The beginning with the juniper is great, but then it goes a little too generic-“male”-cologne-note on me, and turns into a scrubber. Ah well, that’s one expensive mistake I didn’t make!

I love Caleche! I had a lucky find at a thrift shop. A three piece vintage set with a one ounce EDT, a small bottle of perfume, and a one ounce huile parfumee.

The EDT and the perfume oil only have a half inch or so left, but the perfume (maybe 10 ml, the label doesn’t say) is nearly full.

I use them when I want to feel lavish!

SOTD is Portrait of a Lady. Something I don’t need a BUB of. I bought the 3-pack travel spray, way back when they sold them in 3-packs for a much more reasonable price. And I haven’t even thunked the first bottle. It’s strong stuff, and I have to be in the mood, so I don’t wear it all too often.

No SOTD, but if I were home, I’d probably be wearing L’eau à la folie. Instead, I am sitting in an airport in the fog. I’ve spent a lot of time in airports / airplanes in the last week…our flight to Haida Gwaii on Sunday tried to land twice, diverted to another airport, then came back and tried again to land without success, so they took us back to Vancouver and we flew up the next afternoon. Today, we need that plane to land so we have a flight home, and…same story. Waiting to see if they’ll come up from Sandspit to attempt another landing, or if we’re here overnight. I won’t complain, but I wish I’d had some warning…no idea where we’re going to stay tonight, and I’d rather be out exploring right now than marooned in the airport.

Clearly the universe is trying to tell me that I should have scheduled my Haida Gwaii trip for a day later. 🙂 But it’s all part of the adventure — gives us good stories, I guess!

And oh BTW, I ended up calling this person’s manager not because of the Zoom thing but because her attitude sucked on more than one occasion (I provided 2 specific instances, the first one of which I contacted her directly with the feedback and once I do that, the next instance is an escalation).

Well, at the agency where I work almost everyone has young children and all kinds of home chaos going on at present, so I think we’re all super understanding of Zoomers, even meeting hosts and facilitators, turning off their cameras during meetings. That said, if I was the host I’d probably offer an explanation but I don’t think anyone would take it amiss even if I didn’t.

I see your point. The thing is, she has been back to the office although I can’t tell for sure if she was in the office – there have been several of these meetings so I would have expected that at least one of them would have been from the office. In any case, perhaps there is a difference in a company’s culture that determines acceptability.

If people don’t want to be on camera, why can’t you do an old fashioned conference call? I have only done a Doctor’s video visit for my daughter. The nurse was eating. I was shocked! ( ok, not shocked, just disheartened)

Eating on Zoom on camera is REALLY BAD in my book. I hate when others do it, it’s so nasty. If I just have to eat something (often because I haven’t eaten all day before another meeting), I leave my camera off and apologize with an explanation. Then I turn camera back on when I’m not eating. Simple courtesy!

Agree with you on the grossness of eating on camera. That said, while I think it’s cute to see pets, when you see someone having to move a giant cat from one side of the desk to the other side more than 2x, it’s time to move the cat to another room.

Zoom is the way to go to keep us more connected. I really think she has no valid reason but I cannot tell her manager I have an issue with that. And the eating, gross…other than drinking coffee.

Sotd started out as St. Clair Casablanca because I was craving jasmine. When it wore off midday, I was disappointed that I didn’t have any jasmine scents in my office stash. Not complaining, though because I have plenty of other lovely decants from you all to choose from!

Speaking of jasmine, BUB #3 is Rodin by Rodin when I heard the line was being dc’d.

I’m so behind on NST so just now reading this. I’m glad you mentioned Rodin because that reminds me to start trying to hunt down a BUB myself. My bottle is only half full at this point, and I LOVE this perfume so much.

Day off today but had many appointments. I’m having to change my daughter’s programs to adult instead of child now that she is 18. Ugh… paperwork and meetings.
I have had 3 perfumes on today. The Body Shop White Musk Smokey Rose. Elie Saab Le Parfum L”eau Couture and now Proenza Schouler Arizona.

Thanks to cazaubon, I’m wearing Tyger Tyger for International Tiger Day! I don’t have a BUB of it, but I have BUBs of several other 4160 Tuesdays fragrances: Scenthusiasm, Clouds Illusion, Both Sides Now, An Excess of Carelessness, White Queen. Yes, I’m a big fan of Sarah McCartney and 4160 Tuesdays: https://scentsandsensibilities.co/tag/4160-tuesdays/. No commercial relationship, just a fangirl.
I too have “BUBs, I’ve had a few, but then again, too few to mention.” Except really, it may be too many to mention. Oops. I won’t mention Ostara again. You know.

I’ve been wearing AdP Vaniglia and Yuzu. Both are from samples. I like Yuzu a lot, but I’m possibly getting picky. I either need more from this one, or maybe I need more of it so it can grow on me.

It’s so hot here. I shopped for groceries to make a birthday feast for the hubster on Saturday, but tomorrow I need to make the cake and a side so I don’t have so much to do on Saturday. ?

I’m super late today but thought I’d still report in, I wore vintage Shalimar edc combined with the body creme; it’s a great combo!
