Tuesday scent of the day 7/20

Posted by Robin on 20 July 2021 182 Comments

It's Tuesday, International Chess Day and Gregor Mendel's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Voyage d'Hermès for the canned gin and tonics in season 2 of Fleabag. Update: I forgot (again) to report my tea. It's Dikom Estate Assam from Upton, with a sprinkle of nutmeg.

Reminder: 7/23 will be Sitcom Friday...name a favorite sitcom, and wear a fragrance that reminds you of the show in general, or one of the characters.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Phoebe Waller-Bridge of Fleabag, drinking tea in her guinea pig cafe. More reading: Fleabag: a hilarious sitcom about terrible people and broken lives and Farewell Fleabag: the most electrifying, devastating TV in years, both at The Guardian.

Man, I really gotta rewatch Fleabag from the start. But there are so many other things I have to watch too! How do people keep up? I know I can’t.

Today I’m in a discreet amount of Jacomo de Jacomo, an almost undefinable hybrid between an aromatic fougère and a woody oriental. If I say “It smells like the early eighties”, anyone who was around then will know exactly what I mean.

I loved Fleabag and thought it was hilarious.
I’m Heretic Scandalwood, which I love, but it does become a skin scent fairly quickly.
My daughter leaves for camp in a few hours. She is taking the bus this year and I’m feeling a mixture of sadness and guilt over this decision. Because of covid parents can’t even get out of their cars when dropping their campers off. Which means no walking her to her cabin, making her bed, and slipping my traditional card under her pillow.☹️ I felt like driving for 10 hours to just sit in the car was hardly worth it. This is her fifth summer, so she’s old hat at this. I’m trying to keep in mind that this is not about me, it’s about her, and I am thrilled that she gets to go back this year. I’ll wait until the bus is safely out of sight before I cry. Lol.

Thanks lillyjo. Yeah, I had to sneak it into her duffle bag in between her folded sheets, so she’ll find it. She said to me last night “I’ll have to make my own bed this year”? stupid covid is right!

Sometimes the bus ride leads to inside jokes and friendships that wouldn’t have happened otherwise.

That was my thought exactly. Plus they are rapid testing every camper as they enter, so the drop off sounded like it was going to be a total cluster you-know-what.

I love the slipping of the card under the pillow! We’ve never gotten to do that since the kids ride a ferry to camp across the sound — I’ve never actually been to her camp! She had to figure out making her bed herself at age 8, which wasn’t a bad thing.

She’ll have a great time on the bus, even if you’ll be misty-eyed. 🙂

SotD = Lumiere Doree. Really, really enjoying it. Some perfume houses I just love their vibe and that is the case with Miller Harris.
As for the CP I am saving my personal best for last – for Friday which is when I will wear Kedu, a perfume I wore every evening I binge watched All American.
I was also thinking about what kind of perfume Fallon from the new Dynasty would wear? Hard question to answer. Maybe a luxe Guerlain like their Muguet?

The chessboard is perpetually out and collecting dust; since The Queen’s Gambit, I’ve lost all desire to play. I think that show opened my eyes to what a pathetic player I really am and yet, it also motivated me to want to get better. Unfortunately, that takes time which I currently am in short supply of. My husband plays on his phone all the time waiting patiently for me to join him again.

The Rose 31 lotion comes with any stay at a Fairmont, and my kid nabbed some of the bottles. She puts it on in the car all the time. 🙂 It’s nice, and quite strong. I’ve never tried the original perfume, so can’t compare, though.

            20 July 2021 at 9:25 pm

Thanks! Lys 41 is the scent I’d be most inclined to get as a lotion, as I’d love to emphasize it’s tuberose wonderfulness. I don’t see it as a downside if the lotion has good lasting power!

        • Vee says:
          20 July 2021 at 10:02 pm

I use a 50-50 mix the of the Rose 31 lotion with unscented Dove lotion* and even then the scent is strong enough that I get compliments on my “perfume.”

*Le Labo lotion is definitively all about the scent and not the moisturizing capability.

SOTD is a dab of Kenzo Amour (old, discontinued formulation) on left arm and DSH Au Lait on right arm, to compare. When I sampled Au Lait yesterday, it immediately made me think of Amour, so I wanted to do a side-by-side. Amour is more of a perfume–with more complexities of notes than Au Lait being more linear and unidimensional. Actually, that’s been my note for all of the DSH scents I’ve tried in this set of samples.

Maybe it’s not fair, as they are all gourmet scents meant to evoke a particular food (chocolate, coffee, and in this case, sweetened condensed milk), but at the same time, if I’m going to wear perfume, I usually want it to surprise me at least a little bit. I’m not much for the Demeter-type scents, for example. The quality is higher for DSH than Demeter, but the sense of once you’ve smelled it, you know what you’re getting is the same.

So, no holy grail coffee scent, yet. Gotta keep sampling!

Do you know if the newer Amour smells much different? I should have bought a bigger bottle of Amour when I got it years ago, but only got the 1 oz and some day it’s going to be gone.

I sniffed a newer tester of Amour a few years ago and I remember thinking it was noticeably different, but I’m hazy on the details now. I want to say it was sharper, less milky and maybe less long-lasting? IIRC, when they reformulated, they changed the bottles to all one color, so if you can find a set online with 3 colors (pink mini, orange middle, white large), I believe that will be the older formulation.

I’m testing the Different Company’s Sublime Balkiss today. Starts with citrus, followed by springtime flowers (blooms and greens) with a fresh aquatic note. Reminds of of Sur Le Nil, but if it were set in an english garden with a small brook. The comparisons to Pleasures make sense to me too. It is very well done.

Fleabag is so good! I could see Claire wearing this. It is niche and sophisticated, but also extremely office appropriate.

Drinking a mystery black tea from a homemade tea bag. I’m guessing I made the bag for my travel mug, and then realized I need to wear a mask wherever I was going, so it was pointless to bring tea. Tastes like a Darjeeling.

No new sitcoms have grabbed me so I’m going to watch Making the Cut this evening (Amazon Prime) but I am laughing that Heidi Klum said it was different from Project Runway because “It’s not a sewing competition.” Project Runway wasn’t a sewing competition either, as I remember a woman winning for what were essentially caftans.

I wore Dedcool’s Taunt because I have it in the perfume oil form and wanted something that would sit close to the skin and not gas out the plane. We’re in Vegas – rode in a elevator that had just been vacated by someone wearing a huge cloud of Baccarat Rouge 540. I haven’t smelled perfume in the wild for sooooo long! Such a treat.

I love Fleabag!! The sisterly interactions were especially great, even if my sister and I are nothing like that.

I like it quite a bit! I bought the travel spray and have no regret but probably would not go for a full bottle. It’s quite floral on me (jasmine and orange blossom) with a dusting of matcha powder, almost like a jasmine tea. I also don’t like it as much as their previous tea scent, Tea Escape. Sadly, discontinued.

Have been in Chanel Eau de Cologne this morning while doing serious research on a new computer. Oh, look at that – there’s an emoji for my aged ? (so why oh why is there no perfume bottle emoji??). I’ve just about nailed everything down, and am now trying to optimize the various adapters needed for transitioning to a USB-C-only environment — my current system was built before USB-C was even a gleam in an engineer’s eye, so all my stuff (card reader, CD player) has the older version of USB connection. First world problems, for sure. ?

Adapters. But, I got a cheapie one from Amazon with a one to many and it failed me. My CD player has not worked yet but I haven’t spent much time trying to figure it out. The most important peripheral is an external back-up drive. I also got a wireless mouse that uses blue-tooth.

It’s possible that I might want to use a non-Apple Bluetooth mouse (that uses a usb plug-in) while also downloading photos from my aged DSLR (which uses “compactflash” memory cards and an old usb-based card reader) AND a wired (USB) keyboard. That’s the most complicated scenario I can think of. Looks to me like there are USB-C hubs that would give me 4 old-style usb ports, and as long as the hub worked, that would cover my needs. But I’ll still order an Apple-made USB-C-to-USB converter as a back-up. Think that covers things?

It should. Apple may be a reseller of the USB-C hubs although and I would trust them more; I may have to give in and buy one from the store.

Speaking of first world problems, my company is reimbursing us $1,100 for a defined list of work from home computer equipment (computer / laptop, keyboard, mouse, monitor) for anything purchased from March 2020 onwards. How I found out about this is another story. My work laptop is now 2 years old – I bought it April 2019 and took it out of the box January 2020. Anyway, so I could go out shopping for a new setup. We can get reimbursed every 3 years and we also get to keep the equipment even if we leave the company before the 3 years is up. Decisions decisions!

    Hello!

    1) in Bagatelle de Gabrielle today. Really perfect for this cool, overcast with a tiny sprinkle of rain morning.

    2) Clean up and returning. I have slowly started putting things into the new cabinets- and decluttering at the same time. How weird I don’t want my old worn out stuff into new sparkling cabinets. I have to return a kitchen sink (fun) and coordinate returning some items from IKEA (double fun).

In my sample of BDK Tabac Rose again and loving the plummy richness. Andréa hasn’t quite convinced me yet on a FB but she does keep reminding me that life is short and pourquoi pas?

In other fragrance news, I was reading my local Nextdoor posts, only to see this headline – “Police Recover Purloined Perfume in North Seattle” – “At approximately 7:40pm, police watched 2 men enter the beauty store and head straight for the fragrances…the men were arrested leaving the store with over 60 bottles of perfume and admitted to a plan to sell the bottles on the street in Seattle’s downtown core.” Whoever came up with the quippy “Purloined Perfume” must be quite proud of themselves 🙂

The exhibition I’m performing in will finally open on the 29th, so it’s go-time trying to make sure we’re really ready.

Post-work, I put on Musc Ravageur and took a short nap to let the second vaccine dose continue working its magic. Now to eat dinner and get to bed early again!

Do you know if they will make it available on zoom or anything?

Checking in appallingly late — I was too PMSsy today for perfume but now smell lovely after a bath with a Lush Goddess bath bomb. I was thinking of Fleabag earlier and remembering the wee scene where Claire, suffering from intense PMS, walks into the room in a full-body turquoise spandex running (?) suit. That’s about where I’m at.
