The damage so far: second quarter 2021 buying poll

Posted by Robin on 2 July 2021 214 Comments

Donatella Versace and her perfume cabinets

Donatella, Our Lady of Fragranced Forgiveness,1, is as busy as ever, what with keeping Versaceopolis populated with mermaids and raising money for Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation and declaring blonde banal and whatnot, but she would never miss her quarterly drop-in to hear the confessions of her flock. She'd very much like to know what you bought in the 2nd quarter (April, May and June) of 2021.

Note that if you have javascript disabled, you won't be able to vote in the poll, but you can still record your purchases in the comments.

My purchases...

So I swore I was going to buy either Astier de Villatte Grand Chalet or D'Orsay Vouloir être ailleurs or both, but I dithered as usual and now it's too hot to ship perfume til the fall. So my total for the year is still ZERO. I am sorry for failing you, Donatella.

As always, report your purchases in the comments if you dare! And as always, we don't include samples or gifts, and you can count miniatures, decants and bottle-splits howsoever you like (I usually count them as half bottles). Samples don't generally count at all, even though some of us spend considerable sums obtaining them.

1. Why does Donatella host (against her will, mind you) the damage polls? There is no real reason other than the picture of her perfume collection, which shows that she indulges regularly at the perfume counter. The image, by the way, is originally from Allure magazine and appears here courtesy of Blogdorf Goodman.

I’m always happy to let you go first, BobH 🙂 Tell me about the Miller Harris… it’s hard to find that line in the US.

Starts out with a blast of blackcurrant and herb garden mint and quickly dries down to purple fruit and creamy vanilla. Not earth shattering, but good nonetheless! And a steal at £24.99 at TK Maxx.
And a quick PSA, Miller Harris are having a sale online right now…

Hi Bobh!! I just wanted to make sure this was a TK Maxx and not TJ Maxx. It is the first time I hear of TK Maxx. And the price You got Your Miller Harris for was not in the US, correct? We have a TJ Maxx where I live and I wish to run into a Miller Harris too!!

Yes, I’m enjoying it a lot. It sits between rooty and buttery iris and the saffron gives it a bit of creamy spiciness. I’ve slept on these 4711s for a long time but they’re all really good for the money. Really pleasantly surprised.

My dearest Lady Donatella, you are truly a beacon to me (or at least your bleachy blonde hair is beacon-like); as always, I do try to follow your One True Path of Never Enough Perfume.

This quarter, well! I was fairly restrained, considering. (Considering what, you ask? I dunno, it just sounded good.)

    So, there were FB purchases:
    1. Tom Ford Bitter Peach
    2. Miller Harris Dance Amongst the Lace
    3. Miller Harris Sublime Blossom
    4. Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir
    5. Jo Malone Nectarine Blossom & Honey
    6. Guerlain Shalimar Philtre de Parfum
    7. Fragonard Beau de Provence
    8. Cartier Oud & Oud
    9. Cartier Oud & Musc
    10. Dyptique Eau Moheli
    11. Chanel Paris-Edimbourg

There was an acquisition of a museum piece (ok, vintage stuff bought off Ebay, but still):
    12. Diorissimo EdT

There was a charitable contribution (a purchase directly from the artist):
    13. Dame Perfumery New Musk EdT

There were mini’s, which are invisible to Donatella:
    1. Guerlain Parure parfum
    2. Diorissimo parfum
    3. EL Tuscany per Donna parfum
    4. Kenzo Jungle Le Tigre
    5. Kenzo Parfum d’Ete
    6. Tauer Cologne du Maghreb
    7. Scents of Wood x 3

But do all of these count? I think not. Mini’s never count, nor do charitable contributions, nor museum pieces, I say. I split two of the FBs so let’s count them as ½ a bottle each. Gifts to self don’t count, and there have been several of those this quarter. I deserved gifts for my first covid vaccine shot, and my second (might deserve two for that second shot, my reaction was pretty awful). I have also been on a diet all year, and deserved gifts to self for a couple of diet-related milestones: first, I lost enough weight to make the weight listed on my driver’s license be the actual truth instead of an out-and-out lie; second, I passed the ten-pounds-lost mark.

Considering all that, it appears I acquired 6-ish bottles this quarter. Pretty restrained! BUT WAIT! I sold, swapped, or gave away 15 FB’s and 11 mini’s. So! We have a net loss. Whoops, sorry Lady D! You know I will try harder in the future.

Dear Donatella, I have let you down this quarter. I did not buy anything. No bottles of perfume, no shower gels or scented soaps, no candles, not even any samples. I am hanging my head in shame. I did buy a condo, a small one, but I suspect it is beneath your notice, being so tiny. It’s probably smaller than one of your closets.

I’ll try to do better next quarter.

I’m curious as to what other NSTers think about Coco EDT vs EDP. I got both during the Sephora sale bc I wanted to see if I could really tell the difference. I wore the edt years (decades) ago and liked it, so I figured I’d either have two different versions Coco if they smelled different, or a bottle and a BUB if they smelled the same, and thus no real risk. The EDT certainly smells lighter and less bombastic to me, but I don’t get a DRAMATIC difference between the two.

I didn’t record prices for a long time, but when I realized I had a crazy number of bottles, I thought it best to know so I could do fair swap offers or maybe sell or gift bottles from time to time.

Yep, picked one up at the new Salt Straw in Totem Lake (WA) [They had plenty of them on a nice display]. Nice little shopping center they’re building there. The employee was like whaaat, no Ice Cream with your purchase? 😉

They should give a complimentary scoop with the fragrance purchase! I really like that scent just for the pleasant association with the sweet wall of waffle cone smell walking into Salt and Straw.

Lots of perfume fun here – L’Orpheline is wonderful – I don’t think it gets enough love. Questions, how were what I assume are the current formulations of Frédéric Malle Portrait Of A Lady Eau De Parfum (Harrod’s (Fri) May 21 – 2021) and Byredo Pulp Eau De Parfum (Selfridges (Wed) May 05 – 2021)? I have read some grips in recent reviews. Not that you have to compare to a prior version, but are they fabulous?

Here’s my total as far as I can remember, I don’t really keep track:

    Xerjoff Italica
    Xerjoff Golden Dallah
    Nez Kraft Gommé
    F. Bianchi Luxe, Calme et Volupté
    VCA Bois d’Amande
    VCA Bois Doré
    Dusita Splendiris
    4160 Tuesdays Complicated Shadows
4160 Tuesdays Waft from the Loft BUB
    Guérlain Joyeuse Tubéreuse
    Gallagher Wicked Good
    Gallagher Behold Patchouli
    Tom Ford Lost Cherry

It was a good quarter, although most of them are sitting in San Diego so I won’t really have access to them until November. Sigh.

No idea, it was a blind buy (like most of the bottles on the list) as I’m up in Canada until the end of October and the bottles are sitting in San Diego. I noticed they had it on sale at fragrancebuy.ca.

I have little to contribute, Donatella, and I see others have caught your eye for the excellent purchases they have made.

    – I bought some LS samples, none of which thrilled me. (Especially disappointed in Lost Alice which I thought sounded like tons of fun and on me is mostly just figgy.)
    – Happily I participated in the split of Paris-Venise which IS pretty great.
    – And I did very well in the swapmeet –many thanks to all my swap partners.
I think I can do better next quarter, dear Donatella. Do not give up on me yet!

Not much to report, just two decants. But they were on my wish list for ever, and I am glad I finally got them.

Heeley Menthe Fraiche 7 ml (another minty scent is always welcome in summer)
Annick Goutal Encens Flamboyant 10 ml (incense, but not a church incense)

Oh, and if you are looking for a (bar) soap with a realistic scent of linden blossom, I recommend European Soaps Pre de Provence Linden. It smells just like linden trees in bloom to me! (And very much like D’Orsay Tilleul). The only downside is that the fragrance is rather subtle.

Pre de Provence Linden is a great linden soap. I agree that the scent is subtle, but I enjoy it lot. I love Pre de Provence soaps.

This is a linden staple for me — it’s so good! And I find that a fresh bar will scent half the house for a while, and at the same time not leave noticeable scent on my hands (which is a big plus for me).

For me, it does not fill the bathroom the way some scented soaps do, but I can smell it distinctly when I am near the sink.
I like when the soap scent lingers on my hands, so I was a bit disappointed. But I think my cat disapproves scented hands, so she probably agrees with you on this point.

Two for me (SMN Eva and vintage Cabochard), plus a 4 ml mini of Chanel Sycomore. My perfume purchasing seems to have tapered a bit over prior quarters, but I see in reviewing my “orders” email folder that I’ve gone a bit hog wild with home furnishings lately. ?

Seriously, if there is someone somewhere with a blog demanding that you report your quarterly home furnishings expenditures, then I am glad I do not read that blog. That is where all my 2020 and 2021 $ has gone.

EDP, in good shape, but I also have edt, yes it can be a bit of a gamble with vintage.

Wow, I can see I have some serious catching up to do to be a member of this exclusive club!
I only bought one, and not even sure it was in this quarter or not–so hard to keep track of time these featureless days. Amouage Love Tuberose. I have no regrets. I haven’t been going out anywhere sniffing, and apparently that has quelled my desires to buy. Well, that plus the inadvertent acquisition of four new cats, which has in turn triggered an enormous sum spent to veterinarians in payments for checkups, neuter/spay, not to mention horrendous bite wounds from fights that necessitated daily visits, hospitalization, and more…. those vet visits really add up fast.

The cat who bit me back in December had to be put to sleep in around March or April. I think it’s possible she had some dementia as that was just not at all like her. After that I took in the four new ones, a male, a mama and her two kittens (not related to the boy). The unneutered male cat attacked some of my other cats and they had the very bad bite wounds that required vet visits. He also attacked my leg once which necessitated another doctor visit and my doctor told me I have too many cats. Sigh. Now that he’s neutered he is much calmer. I planned to get the kittens adopted but they were simply too cute to give up. Now they are next in line at four months to go in for spaying.

I feel confident spaying and neutering will be the key for “home colony” harmony. Thanks for sharing you story because we are soon going to be bringing new kitties in our home and it will likely be a period of challenge. But cats are so worth it.

Only two this quarter! A bub of Gucci brown, and a 30 ml of Freckled and Beautiful. I had noticed on A Lab on Fire’s website that they had this size available, but didn’t buy. When I went back, the option wasn’t available. So I emailed them, and the last one is in the mail on its way to me 🙂

Donatella, I have been busy redoing my kitchen and working on certifications for work BUT :

    1) Sunshine Mimosa perfume spray- part of a set for my sister, which she did not like: about $17

    2) La Vie Est Belle Soleil Cristal- This is my ‘reward’ for getting the kitchen done! A lovely skin scent, but honestly this is going to replace my Boucheron for the winter; warm and luminous skin close. $133

I am quite enab, er, encouraged by the lists here. I decided to join in the reporting:

Vintage lot of partial bottles: Giorgio Red, Charlie & Shalimar edt. All unboxed@$15

Vintage Miss Dior edt, 100mls, NOS, sealed@$75.96 (it smells great)

Atelier Cafe Tuberosa, 100mls, new, sealed@116.89. Price seemed right and I am near a thunk on my travel spray.

Vintage Mahora edp, 75mls, new sealed@104.86. I have a bottle but I do wear it often so I caved on my no more back up rule.

Second hand Amouage Myths, with box, 90% of 100mls@$139.09. Love it: it was a blind buy based on several trusted reviewers.

Vintage Lancaster version of Chopard Casmir, 100mls, full, no box@$36.96. Purchase in a fit of pique, wanting to find out what it is people love about the vintage. I will have to do a comparison with the modern version I got some time ago and which seemed meh.

Vintage-ish Insolence edt, 100mls in the Serge Mansau bottle, full tester with cap@$37.40. This was also a fit of pique because my other bottle of edt did not have a cap. I have all the other versions of Insolence and *those* have the caps. That is nutty and I tried to learn from the experience, but did not. And I do really love Insolence.

SL Fils De Joie, 50 mls, new sealed@114.40. Another blind buy based on trusted reviewers and an NST’er who raved about it a few weeks ago. Also, I am finding that the current SL’s seem quite nice to me, though I don’t doubt that some were once more statement-making. Guess I will do a pre-confession: I paid that much because it looked like it was getting snapped up at the discounters. Then last week (new quarter) it re-appeared at FragranceNet for ~$78 and I failed again to resist backups. But my infatuation with it and the performance and sillage did play a role. A little nutty; but my sister might like it so I could say I’ll count it as a gift.

Vintage EL Spellbound, second-hand, no box 90% of 50mls@112.86. It smells perfect; I am wearing it now. That was not a bargain juice-wise, but I now have all but Aliage in the original bottle style, so that played a part.

Beyond Paradise Blue, new sealed, 100mls@$62.67. This was a blind buy based solely on an NST’er who recently wore it and like it. Please claim your enabler badge. I tried to look you up but could not find your comment. Also, I have the other Beyond Paradise Rainbow bottle, so my completist side is now happy. The BP Blue bottle is really pretty, too.

Mauboussin Histoire d’Eau. I don’t know why. It was on clearance at Frag’net, 40ml tester with cap, new sealed@$12.49. The funny bottle? FOMO? I have no idea what it smells like.

LPRN Black Perfecto edp, 30ml new sealed@$22.00. Because I still can’t believe such good perfume in a great bottle is only $22. I already have a big ol’ bottle, so I left it sealed and will see if a gift opportunity comes up.

Not that I count these as damage, but I will mention the wonderful additions through the Swapmeet and the Splitmeet: In travel or decants, I discovered Frederic Malle En Passant and Le Parfum de Therese, Bruno Fazzolari Au Dela, Shalimar Philtre de Parfum, and Chanel Le Lion; and an FB of Atlelier Jasmine Angelique. Ateliers do so well for me. I have Cafe Tuberosa, Oud Sapphir (it’s crazy masculine except when it’s not – really a shape-shifter), and Silver Iris. Eyeing others……

Whew, there you have it. I am sure Lady Ms. Donatella can relate. BTW, I liked the overall designs and prints/embellishments of the mermaid dresses, but the necklines seem very unflattering: push down is not going to be the new push up, sez me.

It felt like a naughty quarter for me since I’ve not been spending much on myself recently and did succumb to a few perfume purchases:

*Splits: Le Lion, Paris-Deauville, and Jardin en Mediterranee, which all together don’t quite add up to one FB…
*Partial bottle of Malibu Lemon Blossom off Ebay as it appears to have been discontinued and it’s my favorite cheap thrill
*AP Blue Silk, extravagantly discounted via FragranceNet

Now I’ll politely fold my hands in my lap (and put my wallet back in my pocket) and hopefully not buy anything in the coming quarter!

Two FBs for me this quarter, plus a few samples from Luckyscent that are still somewhere en route.
    Fort and Manle Amber Absolutely
    Armani Privé Ambre Eccentrico
I see a theme there, I seem to have an increasing interest in warmer perfumes. And I only paid the cost of the perfumes themselves, I bought them within the country and postage was free. That certainly gives some me some perfumath discount 🙂

    Tuberoza by Nishane
Decant of Creed Asian Green Tea
    Decant of Neela Vermeire Mohur
Andy Tauer L’air du desert morocain (for my Dad)
And a mistery travel bottle I purchased to be revealed when I am ready to report on it!!

How do you like Squid, and is it like anything that’s been out a while? I almost blind bought that one.

I love it but it caused a rash in the exact area of application ☹️.

Oh dear! I hope it did not last too long, and that you only had a sample.

Squid… Is unlike ANYTHING out there. Salty with this oceanic note that is not aquatic at all. Weird. But I love it. It has it’s amazing sweetness to it too. I blind bought it after reading the list of notes and what Zoologist wrote about this fragrance and it is definitely a fulfilled promise on their end.

Just to clarify I don’t feel any regrets about buying perfumes because my hobby makes my blood pump. I am in no position to be spending but I do and manage and love it:))

For some reason I read this as “My husband makes my blood pump” and was trying to understand the connection.

Ha! I plan to just pull out Scoob’s list now and then to show Mr. SP that I am not doing enough comparatively to pkease Donatello!

Hey everyone! I had to come report to Donatella even though I’m still days behind reading posts. Just a lot going on lately. I’ll make sure to show up to the weekend poll though!

I bought more than intended this quarter, but I don’t regret any of them.

Matching you with Le Lion and Fils de Joie – so glad to add those to my hoard. Good find on the Cristalle, too!

Oops I forgot to list the 10ml decant of VC&A California Reverie. That’s probably because it didn’t do it for me, so I’ve already placed it in the “swap away” box.

Yes, it’s been hot, but I certainly didn’t let that stop me this quarter.
I killed some long-time lemmings, so I don’t regret these:

    vintage Etro Royal Pavillon, 100ml
    vintage Etro Shaal Nur, 100ml
    P d’Empire Cuir Ottoman, 50ml
    Papillon Dryad, 50ml
    diptyque Tam Dao, 30ml
splits of Ambre Sultan and Afrika-Olifant
Prada Infusions d’Iris, 30ml (OK, I do regret this one. Anyone care to swap?)

Hooray for the vintage Etro’s! Tam Dao is a beauty, too. It is one where I’ve so far made do with a sample because much as I like it, it’s not quite “me.” But I have mulled over bargain bottles from time to time.

They smell just as I remember.

And you can’t go wrong with Tam Dao!

Would you mind sharing where you found the 30 ml Tam Dao? I’ve been looking…

I found it on ebay, in an orange box with a sandalwood graphic. I think it may be some kind of duty free exclusive? It has Arabic lettering on the bottom of the box.

The back of the label has a beautiful drawing of an elephant. You see it when you turn the bottle around.

I bought Juliette Has a Gun Musc Invisible.

I went back and forth for a while, telling myself I really have a LOT of musks. But then I wear and like musks so it made sense to add it to the collection.

I have been wearing it quite a lot.
