Friday scent of the day 6/25

Posted by Robin on 25 June 2021 218 Comments

Happy Friday and happy Global Beatles Day! We're also celebrating the life of Anthony Bourdain, who was born on this day in 1956. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance that you think of as adventurous, or honor Anthony Bourdain / interpret this project in any way you like.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm off to Istanbul (and smelling delicious) with L’Artisan Parfumeur Traversée du Bosphore.

Reminder: on 7/2, Donatella will be dropping by later for the damage poll, so wear one of your recent purchases, and tell us why you bought it, and whether or not you have any regrets.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

So glad it is Friday! It has been a very busy week.

Not participating in the cp. I am wearing L’Artisan Piment Brulant. I can only smell chilli and bell peppers. Overall is a nice refreshing green scent. Good enough for me today.

    Back to read comments later.
    Happy Friday! ?

But chilis and bell peppers are kitchen staples (for a lot of people) and he was a chef, so you kind of did follow the CP unintentionally…
      You smell lovely BTW.

So true! But as his great admirer, I would have liked to pair him with a more complex scent that had reflected his worlwide fame and adventures. So I will take partial points instead! ?

Oh I love Piment Brulant. I was recently even considering buying another bottle because some online discounters offer it at a really affordable price. Personally I always smelled chili peppers and soft cocoa minus the sugar. Lovely!!

It is a very pretty scent and perfect for summer time. I have never smelled the cocoa, but still it is very refreshing and unusual. I love it! I hope you get another bottle. The price is really good at the discounters now!

Problem is there is quite a few perfumes at such a great price at discounters that I constantly have to slow myself down before buying them all…

A chili & bell pepper scent sounds really good, especially if the perfumer got the notes close to the real thing.

Piment Brulant undeniably has this specific “L’Artisan DNA”. You know what I mean when You can just tell when a perfume came from a specific perfume house? Actually it does smell a tad sweet but in a very toned way. It has some warmth from the chilli pepper and softness from that dark chocolate/pure cocoa note. It is so lovely though.

Happy Friday everyone! We are having a public holiday to celebrate midsummer. I am wearing Chameleon by Zoologist. I have been on a tropical kick lately and my 4-year old asked me to wear ”the lizard perfume” so why not:)

It is not the most obvious choice for today’s project as it is very ”safe” scent in my opinion and it does not make me think of faraway tropical islands. It actually takes me to organic chemistry lab course during my first year in uni when we did some work with esters and ketones. Love the smell, though.

To avoid minus points, I think the chameleon in the bottle is wearing the kind of shirt as the late Mr Bourdain quite often did. The telly is not the same without him. I hope he found peace.

I figured I might as well wear something I bought on a trip, so: in 2017 we were in Brussels, among numerous other places, and there’s a fantastic little parfumerie called Parfum d’Ambre, where I bought a bottle of Molinard Habanita EDP, the best reformulation I have ever smelled — it doesn’t smell vintage, exactly, but it’s complex and old-fashioned in the best possible way, little curlicues of incense smoke and a ton of powder (it’s the powderiest scent I know), and roses and tobacco*, and a lot of other things besides, just glorious.

*Habanita was originally created as a perfume *for* tobacco: as a liquid you could trace onto a cigarette with the stopper’s glass rod or as sachets you could tuck into a cigarette case.

That’s the one. I never owned the original Habanita but I smelled it more than once: the 2012 EDP revision is an excellent reinvention of the scent, hewing close to the idea of the original without trying to reproduce it exactly, which is an impossibility these days.

Fragrances are great souvenirs because every time you wear them the trip comes rushing back — there’s nothing like the sense of smell to trigger memories.

I din’t know it was originally FOR tobacco–that’s really interesting. A much nicer take on the “strawberry parfait” and “pina colada” sweet fruity scents in all the e-cigs.

After largely ignoring the brand since the late 90s, I’m in Issey Miyake’s Or Encens. A friend said, “B!tch, you smell riiiich! What is THAT?!” Long discontinued, I think it was a Middle East exclusive which eventually trickled into the gray market, where I happily found it. It smells like its name (gold incense) and is truly wonderful. Yes, I did what any reasonable person would do when I eventually got my hands on it: I bought 3 bottles. 🙂

Happy Friday! I’m in Eau de Magnolia, largely because I thought of it last night and haven’t worn it in a while, but I’m sure Mr. Bourdain loved Louisiana food, right? Plus, lemons.

I’ll be working a partial day in the actual *office* today, for the first time in 15 months, and am not loving all the effort it took to get ready for the day and pack lunches and all this morning. Only doing it because the office is halfway between home and my son’s summer camp, which is an hour’s drive north, so looking to save some commute time. Foggy and dark without and within and hoping the Eau de Magnolia will work some uplifting and cheering magic!

I chose Keep Glazed by House of Oud, because although I believe Anthony Bourdain preferred savory to sweet, I remember an episode of No Reservations where he went wild over a maple bacon donut. This doesn’t have maple or bacon notes, but it does smell like the fanciest, most expensive donut you could imagine.

    I really miss him.

I’m in CdG Jaisalmer which I find adventurous. I liked Anthony Bourdain and Parts Unknown, but I have to say I was disappointed in the one he did about Seattle. He did show some good things, but there was a lot of mention of the number of serial killers we’ve had. He also featured a virtual reality porn place. Seriously? That’s what you want to talk about when we have all this incredible food and beauty?

My brother was into AB’s food episodes and wherever he happens to be on vacation that AB highlighted, he wants to experience the exact menu. I believe he, my SIL and my sister did the Singapore episode, even down to paying ridiculous amounts for a plates that would not satisfy a child. I didn’t go, but then again, I am picky about being food adventurous which really makes me NOT adventurous. A tip they found out afterwards was to get the menu inspired by AB.

I’m in Koala for the CP. I associate AB with travel as much as food, and Australia is on my vacation wish list.

I get lots of eucalyptus – fresh, green, and dewy, with a bit of menthol. After about an hour, the menthol faded and a light dust of fresh powder has settled. I don’t get wood in the traditional sense, but I do get green bamboo. I also get a spicy note in the background, but again, fresh green spicy – like carnation, not dry brown spices. The only dry/brownish note I get is some vetiver. This strikes me as a friendly, young dad scent.

    Drinking Clipper Ship Earl Gray.

I think I have mentioned on here before that on one trip to Australia, in 2017, I went with friends to a wildlife park where you could pay a small fee and HOLD a koala. It was so fun! They were tame ones, raised from birth by humans, and quite placid. VERY heavy, a lot heavier than even a large cat. SOFT fur and they had a definite sweet eucalyptus smell!

I did this too when in Australia, and yes they do! They are purely in it for the eucalyptus that the handlers feed them to encourage transfering into people’s arms, but I’ll accept bought love. I got to pet quokkas at the Adelaide Zoo as well and died of happiness.

I got about 6 hours; about 4 hours in the sandalwood and vetiver had taken over and the green notes were gone, and that was the end of the development, but I’m impressed with how distinct each phase was

Sampling Azzaro Wanted Girl which I stumbled upon pouring over Fragrantica reviews late into the night (as one does) …notes are ginger blossom, orange blossom, pink pepper, pomegranate, datura, dulce de leche, Haitian vetiver, tonka and patchouli essence.

I tried earlier this week and it starts off w/ strong orange blossom and general fruitchouli vibes (I say that w/ love…I like fruitchoulis) but then changes considerably over time and the dulce de leche comes out…definitely not linear for me…I quite enjoy when perfumes morph throughout the day.

My sister had her first chemo treatment earlier this week and is feeling nauseous and tired which is to be expected. 🙁 They have prescribed a new med for the nauseous and that is helping. She had a small mass found on the pancreas and had a whipple procedure to remove it the beginning of May which was successful but they want her to do chemotherapy as well. She will have 12 treatments every other week for 24 weeks. I am hoping the nauseous gets better and she is able to eat more. My sister is petite and normally weighs about 115 lbs but is down to around 100 now…wish I could give her 10 or 15 from my reserves.? My brother-in-law is wonderful and taking good care of her…both of his parents have passed already and they both had cancer and chemo too so this obviously brings up lots of memories and emotions for him too…people are so strong and amazing.♥️

Hi She-ra. I’m really sorry to hear your sister is going through chemo nausea. Must be awful. i have lost about 20kg since getting cancer and while having radiotherapy I was suffering from malnutrition due to vomiting etc. My specialist prescribed me with a product called Ensure Plus..it’s high calorie drink (300 calories in 150ml drink) with minerals and vitamins. I couldn’t keep down food but I could manage this stuff which stabilised weight loss a bit ( it gave me 900 calories a day) plus helped with potassium and sodium deficiencies. Your sister might be able to tolerate it too? I had vanilla…tastes like custard. You can probably find it in USA quite easily, or something similar. All the best.

Co-sign! Chocolate (Milk or Dark)! I think the only issue may be sugar content … although I never looked for them for a loved one, maybe there’s a sugarless, low-sugar version.

        Hope you’re doing well, Kanuka.

Yes that product is in the USA, in fact my brother worked at a company in Michigan that made it! He used to work in their lab as a quality control guy, which meant (partly) that he had to grow botulism (all dressed in complete protective gear) since they had to keep making sure that their testing agents were working. He always said that chocolate is the best. I’m glad to hear that it was of some help to you. How are you now, Kanuka?

I’m very sorry to hear about this, and especially sorry that your brother-in-law is going through it once again. Golly. It’s awful about the weight loss too. I just was listening to an NPR program on medical marijuana and the many uses for it, and the complexity of the cannabis plant’s chemistry. One use is for cancer treatment-caused nausea. Perhaps worth exploring? The show was basically saying that med students get little education on this but should get more because this is a potent drug with many (safe, non-hallucinogenic) uses.

I have several perfumes named after places (I’m a sucker for those!) so I chose the one that’s furthest from my current location – North Bondi, by Ouai. It’s not an adventurous scent by any means (unless you feel smelling like leave in conditioner is an adventure), but it’s a very pleasant scent. I have no idea if it smells like an Australian beach, but I’m going to pretend I’m on one.

My husband and I were (are) big fans of Parts Unknown. As a person who hates to fly and is an extremely picky eater, it was fun to vicariously visit places I know I will never see in person, and watch him eat anything they put in front of him.

    Friday!

    1) Homemade iced coffee and SOTD is Cap Neroli of course. It’s my summer jam, and AB would have appreciated the orange/neroli with mint herbally goodness. For an eau de toilette this seems to last all day on me!

    2) Watered and covered the tender plants- a super blast of heat (110F, 42C) is coming. Normally we are in the 70-75F/23-25C weather at this time of year. Already Mt St Helens (Lu’witt) and Mt Hood (Wy’east) are starting to lose the snowpack- usually you can ski until mid July. Oy Vey!

My young cousin in Michigan posted a weather forecast for a week for her area, and said “Those Sunday temperatures are a killer”, and when I looked, it said High Sunday of 150! Now that was certainly a mistake and made me laugh. Just imagine!

Cold and murky here, and expecting snow next week . I have been taking plesure in watching some sparrows build a nest under the eaves of our corrugated iron roof ( I watch from my lounging position on the couch). One male must have discovered that ournear neighbours have hens as he keeps turning up with the most glorious red-golden downy hen feathers in his beak (almost as big as him) . It bodes well for his nest.
Perfume disaster that fits the CP . I blind bought a scented candle that was meant to smell of campfires, amber and whisky but, in fact, smells of canned tomato soup. Makes the house smell like a hospital ward at dinner time. And it lasts for ever. Ba ha.
All good here: finished radiotherapy, had surgery which removed my tumour (the size of a small baby apparently) , have a 600ml wound drain to drag around as a fashion accessory. Now talk of chemotherapy…but we’ll see. Not sure I’m keen.
Missed you all but thanks so much for the emails (Oakland and Gaynor) and well wishes.

How lovely to see you here! That all sounds like progress, but a very difficult time. Wishing you all the best for everything.
That candle does not sound good 🙂 Trying to drown it out with other scents may or may not be a good idea…

It’s so nice to see your post and that you are recuperating. How lovely to be able to watch the birds do their thing.

We have a saskatoon bush so it’s been fun to watch the robins wait for the berries to ripen. They have to balance themselves as the branches sway back and forth while they select the perfect berry.

      Sending you continued good wishes.

Ginger Piccante from a sample I brought in my travels. Not adventurous at all, but certainly evokes other places besides where I am.

Dinner with one of my oldest best friends last night. We were in each other’s weddings. Way too short a visit.

My recuperating friend had painful PT today, trying to avoid scar tissue development. She’s encouraged to use a walker so she can try to walk straight instead of favoring the knee that had surgery. Long road ahead.

Last of the gorgeous early summer weather here. So I took advantage of it and went grocery shopping at Wegman’s this afternoon. There was a big sign outside of it stating that people who were fully vaxxed did not have to wear masks, unless local rulings states otherwise.

Me, I will continue to wear a mask in retail situations for as long as I can even though I had my second shot at the end of April. The delta variant is making that decision an easy one.

SOTD = Niki de Saint Phalle, from the decant stash. I will have to compare my decant to the bottle I picked up a while ago. Something about it just seems right as an honorific to Anthony Bourdain.

I’m with you on wearing a mask during those retail situations. I do the same. Still avoiding indoor events and indoor events as much as possible.

I actually don’t recall what Niki de Saint Phalle smells like but I have a greenish black iridescent bottle somewhere around here.

I’ve begun loosening up my pandemic-induced precautions which were more intense than my pre-pandemic germaphobia. First, maskless at Wegmans almost a month ago, then Whole Foods, Home Goods and the mall (not crowded), the wedding this past Sunday and actually, I stopped wiping down my groceries last Saturday. I say I was emboldened by my commute into NYC (still masked per regulations and masked while walking to and from the office and anytime I am outside, by choice). I still let my mail stew for a day or so. I also don’t leave home without a mask because I will not hesitate to wear it when I feel like I need to or when stores have signs that say mask required.

NdSP is a dry green chypre. It reminds me of perfumes like Silences, or Soivohle’s Green Oakmoss. I’m still getting wafts of it as I type.

Last weekend I ate indoors in a restaurant for the first time since 2019. It felt rather surreal… they required patrons to wear a mask when entering the establishment. It wasn’t crowded. Patrons were seated at least 6 feet away from other groups, and they didn’t have the buffet as an option.

As is their right I suppose for a privately-owned company. The Korean store I go to also still requires mask-wearing so I comply.

All of our restrictions were lifted this week. About half of retail stores still require that employees be masked, mine included. I would say about 30% of customers are still wearing masks.

I am still wearing a mask when inside retail, and I still won’t eat inside a restaurant. Going to be a pain this summer since my husband will probably just eat out without me when it’s too hot to sit outside 🙂

My SOTD is L’Artisan Havana Vanille, the original version/name, which I remember buying in 2011. I still have about half the bottle left. It is rich and boozy and foodie/gourmand, with immortelle, vanilla of course, fruits, licorice (I can smell it!), smoke, plus RUM, very boozy. Smells like a really interesting, suave, well-traveled, and handsome man. That’s my tribute to AB.

I’m reading this at my Saturday morning hair appointment, so even later than my usual NST breakfast reading. I’m interpreting adventurous as travel, and wearing an impulse purchase from Paris two years ago. The perfume is a nice jammy rose, nothing adventurous in itself, from a brand called Ausmane. I’ve never found out much about it.

It’s crazy. This is the first time I liked everything. I think I will settle for the Opium cream and a 10 ml bottle of Onycha. More expensive that my cheap butt likes, but this stuff is the perfect incense smell I’ve been looking for. The Egypt one doesn’t come in the size I want, but it’s oh so good.

Wearing AG Eau du Sud and thinking that AB might have sported such an Eau – something light enough that it didn’t compete with his wild food and travel choices and substantive enough that it made a statement, which he always did.

A chore-filled day for me today, lost track of the time and even what day it was! But I did participate in the cp: my ‘adventurous’ scent is the long d/c C&E Sonoma Valley. You may wonder why a fragrance whose notes include fig, mimosa, nectarine, and grape leaves would be considered ‘adventurous’? Because it reminds me of one of the most surreal and adventurous experiences of my life: floating above the California wine country, the Napa Sonoma Valley, in a hot air balloon on a crisp fall morning. That incredible sense of being one with the universe is one I’ll never forget, and this soft, green, fruity-floral fragrance both echoes the scents of the valley and re-immerses me in that soul-stirring experience each time I wear it.

    Happy weekend to all!

I am far too late to the game but enjoyed reading everyone’s comments!

Went with Kiehl’s Original Musk for most of today, not remotely adventurous – but switched to my bespoke Singaporean orchid perfume this evening.

That was a solo adventure I booked for myself last time I was there, and you blind-smell all the scent extracts which made it very exciting!

Meant to say this at the end of last week when the article first appeared – I was a big fan of Anthony Bourdain, he was a judge on a short-lived cooking programme here in the UK with Nigella Lawson & a French chef whose name escapes me (Mr Bourdain was highly entertaining!), & we also got his travel/foodie programme on one of our less well known TV channels & I specifically remember him at a restaurant called St John in London with the owner Fergus Henderson, who pioneered ‘nose to tail’ eating here in the UK – they were great friends & it was a joy to watch. Anthony Bourdain seemed to be a lovely man, his death was a shock to people here & he is still much missed by foodies on this side of the pond.
