Wednesday scent of the day 6/23

Posted by Robin on 23 June 2021 205 Comments

Happy Hump Day! Also: Let It Go Day (working on it!) and United Nations Public Service Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Ormonde Jayne Isfarkand, for what looks to be a perfect weather day: sunny, not too hot, not too cold.

Reminder: on 6/25, we're marking Anthony Bourdain's birthday. Wear a fragrance that you think of as adventurous, or interpret this project in any way you like.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Narandjestan [cropped] by Gwen Fran at flickr; some rights reserved. (This image is apparently detail from the painted ceiling at Qavam House aka Narenjestan e Ghavam, in Shiraz, Iran.) Bonus reading: Bourdain's field notes: Iran.

I am determined to use up a bunch of things before I even consider buying anything more: it’s about time. Today I’m in Molyneux Fête, one of those ubiquitous floral chypres from the sixties: my bottle dates from some time in the seventies and is still in perfect shape — seamless oakmoss from top to bottom, fruit and wood and an indistinct, abstract cloud of flowers. It’s basically a nicer, friendlier Mitsouko, and it is fantastic. I have maybe two millilitres left out of a 30-mL bottle and I mean to enjoy every drop. (I didn’t use up the whole bottle myself: I’m not really capable of that. My mom’s signature scent for decades had been Jolie Madame, and she was hugely disappointed when it was reformulated into irrelevance. I poured her a big spray decant of Fête and the old-school chypre-ness of it made her so happy.)

I’m wearing the Dior Jasmin today, it’s nice enough as a lot of the Diors in the Collection Privée are, but I doubt I will ever replace any of the minis I got with a larger bottle. Tea was a good Assam Halmari, and I will take a little time to consider what the next one will be.

The Jasmin des Anges? Me too. Astounding. My decant just arrived in my inbox (curtesy of Royalty Scents ) and I applied it just as I began skimming NST. And boom, you’re comment was right at the top! Kismet!! The perfume breaks no new ground, but it is very pretty. I get something akin to honey in the scent, but some jasmines go that way for me. I wouldn’t dream of getting one Dior’s massive bottles, but will enjoy this decant.

I wanted something that I rarely wear and reached for Anisia Bella. The reason I rarely wear it is because anise (licorice) is one of my least favorite scents, along with vanilla and fig. And yet, when I do wear this very anise forward scent, I quite enjoy it.

Anisia Bella is a terrific hot-weather scent because it’s so breezy. It might actually be my favourite licorice/anise scent. So even if you don’t love anise, you smell great!

Inspired by Pyramus, today’s SOTD is an old-school chypre, Coriandre by Jean Couturier.
Trying my best to ‘let it go’, always a work in progress. I was out of sorts, which a visit to the gym yesterday didn’t fix, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” was in my playlist. It’s something I definitely need to work on!
Enjoying a double espresso today, courtesy of Cafe Bustelo.

Gearing up for the sort of day that calls for No.19, but I’m in the mood for something softer so went with Le Lion instead. I’ll be in the field half the day with a consultant who spent most of Monday verbally bullying me — talking over me every time I tried to ask a question, sneering and talking down to me as if he was trying to make me look puny in front of the other guys present, and generally being condescending and sabotage-y. If you ever want to see me get my feminist hackles up, do that! Not looking forward to a rerun and hoping I can keep my irritation in check (also: PMS). Fortunately, after that there are flats of heirloom peaches and a reunion with my son to look forward to, and pasta bolognese for dinner.

I also use the phrases “To come back to WHAT I saying ” or “As I WAS SAYING” in a slightly louder tone. I have also muted the person if I was doing a Teams presentation (I have admin rights for my section).

      THIS. All of it.
Verbal bullying and mansplaining is annoying. “I was speaking” or “Let’s circle back” usually works. I try to have a handful of replies at the ready for these types of situations.
You’ve got something to look forward to, peaches, a meet up with your son, and pasta Bolognese for supper sound wonderful! 🙂

Love that! I shut him down a few times on Monday with phrases like “Let me finish what I’m saying” coupled with lots of sternness, and he must have gotten the point because he was way more polite today. Sometimes things work out (or Chanel fixes it all) — the Interrupter stood down, I was just in time to scoop up the last flat of white peaches at the peach farm, I had a nice 1-hour break alone in the secret back garden of a nearby general store, drinking ginger ale and reading Henry Miller and Anais Nin’s correspondence, and then a joyful reunion with my little one. Not at all a bad day after all!

Trying Narciso Rodriguez Musc Noir based on mentions in the Fragrantica Best of 2021 so far article below. Notes Plum, Musk, Heliotrope and Suede. Got the the 10 ml travel spray on sale from Macy’s which, we all know, makes it perfume math free! 😉

Quite nice. Many on Fragrantica voting it reminds them of old school Poison Eau de Cologne, which I happen to have in the Closet of Shame ? , and will do a proper comparison soon.

Not perfume, but this ad, from the (relatively) inexpensive French watch micro-brand Baltic, is genius:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNLRyDGo1XA

And it’s one that fits with the Anthony Bourdain poll.

I don’t know if anyone has commented previously on what Anthony Bourdain actually wore. I like to think he would have enjoyed a classic vintage vetiver like Guerlain or Annick Goutal.

More adventurous would be L’AP Timbuktu, Andy Tauer’s L’Air du Desert Marocain, or Bruno Fazzolari Lampblack, or you could go minimalist with Escentric Molecules Molecule 03.

Is anyone else thinking vetiver for Anthony, or are you going with gourmand, unconventional, or what?

Thank you for the lovely picture, Robin. Shiraz is quite beautiful although I cannot recommend it in the summer.
I had three marriage certificates. One in English at the US Embassy, one in French at a small church north of Teheran and one beautiful Persian marriage book with edging such as the one in the picture.

Wow, my favorites are coming up today – old-school chypres and vetivers! I’m so tempted, but I had myself set on CdG Kyoto, which will be adventurous for me, since I have never tried it in the summer. For some reason, I think of incense frags as cold-weather wear.

I’ve always wanted to go to Kyoto, too. Maybe someday I’ll make it.

Kyoto is beautiful and there is so much to see there. If you do get a chance, try staying at a Ryokan (traditional inn) and enjoying a kaiseki (seasonal multiple mini course meal).

A big storm passed through Poznań yesterday and the entire city was paralyzed and damaged. It took me 2 hours to get back home from work and it’s only 10 kms distance!

Luckily today it has calmed down. I’m in Eau de Neroli Dore.

It’s one of Sophia Grojsman’s greatest achievements. I was almost personally offended when Tania Sanchez gave it such a blistering review. My ancient bottle has started to go sort of weird, but I still wear it every now and then and try to fight through the weirdness to remember what it used to be like.

Is the newest revision any good? I just stopped smelling old beloved things because of what was being done to them, but some of the Lauder reformulations were actually not that bad — I think they kept White Linen in good shape, at least the last time I tried it.

SOTD is CdG Grace. I have a few more drops after today to decide if I want to go for a FB. I have so many roses already that I don’t really need it, and could probably get a decant that would last my lifetime, but on the other hand, all of my other roses are Rose + X, but Grace is a straight-forward, no makeup, no filter, pretty rose. And that cat bottle! <3

I happened upon a tester of Ariana Grande's Cloud body spray yesterday at TJMaxx. If it were half as sweet it would be such a great cheapie for me. If only layering it with a salty frag would cut the impact of the sugar like it would in a dessert, but I don't think scents works that way…

Enjoying open windows and low-humidity fresh air today, with a pot of chocolate puer.

I wore Dame Perfumery’s Cactus Orchid from a sample because it’s a perfect “clean, can’t offend anyone” scent and I was going to a CPR class. (I realize that doesn’t sound very exciting but I actually think it’s a great scent. Sometimes you need a good crowd-pleaser! A bottle will probably be in my future when the temperatures drop in fall.)

I don’t know if any of you remember when my parents forgot my birthday in April, but today I received an envelope with a money order and a sticky note that said “We’re so sorry we forgot your birthday!” Better late than never, eh?

I’m in SMN Eva again today. Heading off to the paint store to pick up yet more sample chips — just can’t seem to find the right colors for upstairs, although the nice lady at Benj Moore found their version of the color I’ve chosen for the fireplace surround, plus one more that might even be better!

I find choosing the color to be the most difficult part of the whole painting process. I would happily do all of the cutting in around fiddly trim, power through the numb arms of painting the ceiling, and even do a refresh coat every few years, if only a fairy godmother would find the perfect shade for me.

Ooh, paint colors! I love choosing them. I have plenty of scope this summer since we’re repainting half our house! If I’m using a color that’s new to me, I try to narrow down to two options then get sample pots. The real paint samples have saved me from wrong choices in three rooms!

    H U M P D A Y!

    1) I am in something delightfully silly and uplifting: BBW Sunshine Mimosa. The mist is basically a diluted baby sister of La Vie est Belle, but with more sweet citrus in the opening.

Bourdain would have HAAAAAATED it- ‘girly’ *, frivolous and fruity.

    2) Miscalculated on the island countertop- so I had to order a custom one! *cries* I had to order a custom one- an extra expense, but worth it.
2a) Plumbers are booked out 10- 14 days in advance. IN ADVANCE. Great for plumbers, who deserve to have space and time to do their jobs and be compensated; not so great for DIYers who need help like me. If it can be coordinated with the arrival of the arrival of the countertop GREAT. If not- your girl will on the case!

    3) The HEAT this weekend. Lord help us, the heat!

*fragrance is not gendered and this fruity florally sweet gourmand would actually smell great on a guy or emby type person. I Have in fact smelled richer and sweeter on a number of men.

    SotD = Luci ed Ombre

incense + white florals = delight

I woke up thinking of this perfume. I wondered why it came to my mind. Then I remembered I saw Luci ed Ombre yesterday, when I reached into the perfume cupboard for Iris Ukiyoe.

Let it Go Day — it’s a good reminder for me. It’s no use holding on to old hurts and regrets for too long. There are too many things to smile about each day. I smell something beautiful. A happy song is playing on the radio, I have eaten a healthy breakfast. So why hold grudges at the little annoyances in life? Well, because I’m human, that’s why, but I will do better. 😉

Thank you, Robin, for the bonus reading! I enjoy Mr. Bourdain’s writing.

One employee complained that her new headset only works half of the time. And to emphasize her point, she said even IT could not figure out why they only work 10% of the time. ?

To be fair, it smelled better on my walk so thinking slight heat and a little wind actually helped!

Gallivant Bukhara – happy with my blind buy of this, something I don’t do very often.
Had to get another blood draw for my thyroid this morning, still not quite right, pounding heart and agitated sometimes, and really tired at the same time, and not sleeping. No fun. Probably still too much.

But being on call and getting waked up at 4 in the morning isn’t helping. Be glad when Friday rolls around….

    Song of the Day: https://youtu.be/tMDFv5m18Pw

Y’all know why I picked this one. ????

On the plus side, it is a truly gorgeous early summer day for me. I’d love to have a couple weeks of this!

SOTD = Guerlain Mahora EdP, from the decant stash. Wish I’d grabbed a bottle of it when I saw it about 10 years ago at a perfume kiosk in a local mall.

My folks got Mr. Vee the Black Sabbath guitar tab book for Christmas last year. It must have been on his Amazon wish list. The image of my mom looking at that ominous picture of Ozzy on the cover and wondering “what is this nonesense?” as she wrapped it up in shiny paper makes me lol every time I think about it.

Hi, all, I’m wearing MFK APOM for women today. It’s something I wear when I want pretty, simple, and upbeat. I have had various errands to do and some frustrations, such as the fact my surgery got postponed with no reason given for more than a month, from this Tuesday to July 27. Ugh. I’ll be pretty peeved if I have to return to my own GP to get all my bloodwork run again. I’m getting conflicting messages on that. My poor kitty Willow who has the bad bite wounds and abscesses managed to hid both yesterday morning and today to avoid the regular vet trip to have her wounds flushed out and K-lasered. I finally collected her at about 2 pm and took her to the vet where she will stay the night so that she can see the doctor first thing tomorrow morning. Take that, naughty kitty!
Since I was feeling sorry for myself, a friend suggested to do some splurges to feel nicer. I went to a fancy fish market and bought some fresh grouper for dinner (a kind of sea bass, delicious) at $25/pound! –eek–and then to the grocery store where I bought a pint of Haagen Dasz dolce e leche ice cream. (Spellcheck wants to make that leech, no thank you!). So my evening meal will be pleasant!
Is anyone else hooked on Line of Duty? British show, so if you’ve watched this season over in the UK don’t offer any spoilers here! Last night was the next to the last episode on Netflix in the US, and the suspense is killing me. I have serious anxiety about what I fear might be revealed in the final episode next Tuesday night.

You smell great! Glad kitty was able to get hustled to the vet for her treatment despite her best efforts otherwise. What a bummer that yours has been delayed – your treats sound amazing and well deserved!

Oy with Willow. I hope she comes through the sleepover! As to your postponed surgery, I wonder if it has to do with the blood shortage?

Very late to chime in but I wore Hiram Green from 2 samples on each wrist – Moon Bloom and Shangri-la. I liked S-l more than MB but I probably won’t need any more of either.

Mind you, it was very hot here again so they may need another wearing. Like a few others, the temps are to be over 100 degrees this weekend!

SOTD is Vetiver Oriental after reading some of the Boudain/vetiver chatter yesterday. I always thought of this as a cold-weather only fragrance, but it’s working very well today in the mild heat.
