Tuesday scent of the day 6/1

Posted by Robin on 1 June 2021 124 Comments

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit and welcome to June! (It's also World Milk Day and National Go Barefoot Day. And happy 84th to Morgan Freeman!) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm drinking a cup of organic black tea from Colombia via Upton, sprinkled with nutmeg, and I'm wearing Lush Turmeric Latte, from a decant sent by a kind reader.

Reminder: on 6/4 we're doing With A Little Help from My Friends...wear a perfume that you received from someone else, either here at Now Smell This or elsewhere, or that you never would have tried if someone else hadn't recommended it, or worn it, or reviewed it. Adapted from a suggestion by Jalapeno.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: you can find tea bags in all sorts of fun shapes at Tea Heritage (in Lyon, France) at Etsy. The bunny bags come in Earl Grey or Green Jasmine, $9.32 for 5.

Rabbit rabbit rabbit! I’m in a sample of Bois 1920 Vetiver Ambrato, which is just what it sounds like, bright vetiver (and cloves) on a base of amber (and tobacco).

It is just the right temperature here for vetiver and/or tobacco…maybe I will wear one or the other tomorrow.

I’m just reposting this as I posted it very late yesterday.

I am reading Jeeves and the King of Clubs, and and one of the characters wears “Turkish cologne,” which I decided to look up. I found this BBC article about the history of traditional Turkish kolonya and how it’s now being used as hand sanitizer during the pandemic. Interesting to think that the tradition of welcoming guests by pouring kolonya into their hands would have effectively served the same function.

Kolonya comes in many scents including lavender, lemon, fig blossom, pistachio, jasmine, tobacco, rose, and magnolia, depending on where it’s produced. I want to try them all!

Oh how interesting! I was fortunate enough to live in Madagascar for a term in college, and I witnessed a public mourning event as the body of a man who had passed the day before was being removed from his home. As they walked by with the body, folks at the end of the train doused the hands of everyone who was standing there in observance with “sanitizer.” Now I wonder what it was!

How interesting! I wonder if it was some kind of cologne, rosewater, local potion, or something like Lysol or Dettol (a popular disinfectant in Southern Africa). What a fascinating place to live Madagascar must have been!

I forgot my rabbits until I had already been up for awhile. Dang.
I’m in Diptyque Oyedo, which is lovely but doesn’t last. That’s okay though, tracking tells me the Shalimar from the splitmeet is out for delivery, so I’ll switch to that later. Can’t wait to try it!
I’m gonna switch out my perfume tray today. Putting away some of the heavy hitters and adding: Assam of India, TF Eau de Soleil Blanc, Terracotta, Sur Le Nil and Mediterranee, OJ Champaca, VCA Neroli Amara and Chanel Beige and Biarritz.

It’s supposed to be a hot week, I have a few citrus scents lined up. My SOTD is Eau de Pamplemousse Rose by Hermès, zippy/spicy citrus. I have Roger & Gallet Bouquet Imperiale planned for my post-workout scent. 🙂

Just about to head to the gym. Chest/shoulders day! I’m a little sore from yesterday – I’ve never tried the rowing machine and rowed 5000 meters. It was a little tougher than I thought but I finished!

Currently reading Farmacology – by Dr. Daphine Miller. Interesting read so far!

Agreed — I thought the concepts in the book were intriguing, and I support ongoing research into the application of psychoactive substances in the mental health realm, as well as other arenas (like coping with a terminal illness diagnosis or end of life issues). We tend to demonize certain substances or behaviors, and then it takes us a really long time to get over those characterizations, which is unfortunate.

I agree – that research is important too. The PTSD research seems to me to be the possible tipping point to acceptance. I imagine a highly effective and relatively inexpensive one-and-done treatment option must be intriguing to Veterans Affairs. Support from the VA for research would do a lot for broader acceptance, IMO.

Well, one thing’s for sure, I found breathing was uncomfortable. I’m also not sure if my form was any good so that didn’t help.
I intended to give my back/biceps an extra workout doing rowing.
Kinda like repping out the last set of weights to failure (using lighter weight than previous sets). Some studies have shown it increases post-workout calorie burn.

June! I’ve been waiting for what seems like an age for June to get here, because I pre-ordered a new Phryne Fisher ebook MONTHS ago that was set to release on 6/1. AND we’ve been having a chair repaired, also for MONTHS, and it coincidentally was set up to arrive back in our home on 6/1 and is in some stage of reassembly as I type this. It’s an Eames lounge chair that belonged to Mr. G’s father and is destined for Mr. G’s older son (once his venerable non-declawed cat passes on), so when part of it delaminated (the chair, not the cat) last year there was angst.

It definitely is! We had the leather bits replaced in about 2003, by a guy who was very picky about the leather he used – took forever, but he did a fabulous job. I’ll be sad to see it eventually leave our house, but I know it will be going to a home where it will be cherished.

What a lovely piece of furniture to inherit! I am fortunate that the last few cats (Rocky, Gino, and SmokeyToes) have never had an affinity for scratching furniture.
I’m not surprised at the wait. Friends of mine have a furniture restoration business they’ve owned for nearly 30 years.
They are currently wait listing people through November.

Remembered to rabbitx3 first thing, and am now in Paris-Deauville and about to go water a few plants to gird them for the high temps here today. Argh. And go to a lighting store to see about replacements for our decrepit under-cabinet fixtures in the kitchen. Currently only two out of about twelve are working, and those two are pretty pathetic.

I remembered my rabbits; may they put a positive spin on this new month! Wearing Bronze Goddess again but feeling anything but as I face down another overwhelming work week. On Tuesdays I drop my son off at school and then don’t see him again until noon the next day, which is an awful ache in itself, but this morning during our one precious before-school hour together he acted out so much that I got angry and we both wound up crying and I had to send him off to school with a cloud over both our heads. Just feeling like an abject failure as a mother and a grown-up.

Isabella, I’m not a mom (and I don’t even play one on TV), but I am always so impressed with my friends who are. The effort, time, responsibility, care, love, work, and selflessness y’all put into making sure another critter flourishes is, frankly, kind of heroic.

I’m not a mom, but from observing the moms around me, it seems like there’s incredible pressure to be positive and to ‘love every minute’. If you don’t, there’s something lacking.
          It’s unsustainable.

Barefoot day?! It is more like barefoot season for me. I only wear shoes when I have to, and I go about in sandals (no socks) from March until October (with the exception of my runs).

I haven’t seen my dad in a few months, so going down today to check in on him. He is very isolated, even when there isn’t a pandemic going on. I hope he’s gotten vaccinated by now. He is not stellar at some kinds of self-care.

Many good ideas here for a SOTD. I could go with Box of Eels like aspara, although maybe I’m more in a No. 5 mood now I think on it. A heavy spritz of my old edt could just hit the spot!

SOTM in Ormonde Frangipani and it is so well blended. The Frangipani is front and center, and the ripe plum and tuberose are there when I look for them, but it is all one scent. It is like an ombre stroke of paint that is yellow one end and orange on the other and it is impossible to say where exactly the color switches from yellow to orange because it happens so gradually across the canvass.

Drinking Assam tea and enjoying (through an open window) today’s sunny and low 70s weather that I wish we had had on Saturday and Sunday instead of the buckets of rain that we got.

Sotd is Panache from a generous NSTer. Thank you!

I will have no shortage of CP points this week as I am grateful to have been the beneficiary of this generous and fragrant community.

Back from the Bay Area and beautiful weather there to a beautiful sunny day in Seattle. This week I am setting my sites on decanting and mailing splits from the meet.

You smell wonderful and how great that you got to go to the Bay Area for the weekend. I seem to be Tuesday-challenged so far (forgot to get garbage out for pick-up, etc., etc.)

A beautiful day here (and cold!) after some heavy rains last night. In Chypre Rouge. I felt like something with berries, but Mure and Musc would have been too light and fleeting. My eldest has been provisionally accepted to both his preferred universities, for his first choice field of study. He had to be a little adult for most of his childhood when his brother was being a handful, so I am so grateful on his behalf. And my youngest is flourishing at school, finally. I will burn some incense and say prayers of gratitude tonight.

I forgot to rabbit rabbit this morning, but I still have kitten brain!

Today’s scent is L’Artisan Tea for Two, which in retrospect might have been a poor choice for a day that’s shaping up to be quite warm. I wore Harajuku Lovers Super G last night and the kitten sniffed my arm, his ears went back, and he fled the room! Perhaps the banana note? No other perfumes have elicited that reaction, or any reaction at all, since we brought Momo home last week.

Hmmm, maybe I should get some Harajuku Lovers Super G to wear when I am leading a conference call from home. My cats 1) like to try to lick my perfume, and 2) seem to think I am talking to them when I’m on the phone and that they should talk back. My colleagues have heard quite bit from my cats this year. 🙂

Sending virtual chin rubs to Momo.

    SOTD: Encens Divin by Givenchy

Although not a specific perfume but a note – incense – I might not have tried and explored over the years if it weren’t for my NST friends. Thank you!

Sample of the day is Fleur de Shanghai that I got from the swap meet. Coincidentally for milk day, I still have some of the Molton Brown Milk Musk on my other arm. We went to the mall yesterday and I have finally sampled perfumes in person again! Yes! Also sampled Slow Dance and retried Lost Cherry but like Milk Musk the best of the three

So many of the perfumes I have are due to seeing them mentioned here. On to the list of future samples they go!
I’m wearing Myrrhe Impériale today. I don’t know where I first read about it, but got a sample from STC or TPC, and my beloved brought me back a bottle when he visited Australia years ago.

Rabbit rabbit! (I rarely remember to do that). SOTD is 4160 Tuesdays’ Killer Rose, which I’m enjoying very much although it’s not my usual “flowery floral”. I’m taking a few days off work this week to organize my still-under-renovation house before going to a wedding this weekend. I was supposed to have time off in May that I had to cancel to handle some late-breaking projects at work, that ate into my “holiday” weekend, so I’m enjoying a quiet, peaceful day puttering around home and garden.

In honor of World Milk Day, I am wearing Bonbons au Lait from Kyse Perfumes.

Peeps, Otto Mi Gato has left me. He had advanced kidney disease and hyperthyroidism, both of which had begun to really cripple his health over the past couple of months, and I had to say goodbye to him last week. The house is too quiet, and I’m going to miss him so, so much.

I am so sorry about Otto. It sounds like you gave him a fantastic life. It is so hard when they leave us. I know that memories of them are a mix of joy and grief and that the balance changes over time. I hope the point when the joy overwhelms the grief comes to you soon. Until then, sending virtual hugs.

Florentina again. Educating the yout in the Facebook. The challenge was to explain why one would not like Santsl 33. 1. Price ridiculous. 2. That sharp cedar note that Sears the frontal lobe. 3. There are a dozen cheaper things that are similar and mostly better. 4. It’s hype. The yout was offended and accused me of being a poor. Well I am a poor, but not so poor that Le Labo soaked me for their synth sandalwood and cedar mess. Kids these days.

I have extra rabbits to share if anyone is in need.

SOTD = Iunx Talc and POTL Luctor et Emergo

The former was a find based on a store recommended by Coumarin and the latter was a split from springpansy from almost a year ago. Double points for me!

In other news, I am almost caught up with my Reader’s Digest reading! I am now up to April 2021 after almost a year of going through 4 years of RD. In this issue, there was a snippet of perfumes with their perfume notes, with an implication that they can be offensive to some (I agree!). I was going to post a link to the RD website but 1) I could find the article (which means I should have searched differently) and 2) I don’t like how the site is organized, as if it was not optimized for mobile device reading – I can understand why, but still. I posted it here:

I’m intrigued by every one of the frags RD puts on that list. 🙂 I wouldn’t necessarily *wear* them, but I’d definitely sniff them, if only to see how close they come to what they claim to be.

I never got to try Talc and I think Iunx is kaput, no? Pity they never had US distribution, I bought some of their candles and scents when I was in Paris many years ago. Would have bought more if I didn’t have to fly to Paris to buy it.

Summer has finally arrived, have had two glorious warm sunny days with another predicted for tomorrow, then it drops and the rain comes back in. :-/. Cottonwood is seeding and it is a virtual snowstorm here, as is usual at this time of year. Need to use the leaf blower to clean off the deck before it rains. Wearing Hiram Green Arbolé.
