Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, late May 2021

Posted by Robin on 22 May 2021 203 Comments

Saturday is Sherlock Holmes Day and World Goth Day, then Sunday is World Turtle Day. We're marking all the occasions with our usual open thread poll.

Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance that helps you hide in your shell, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Yay for the weekend! The weather was unpredictable today and I was caught by a storm while riding a bike. Luckily I found a bus stop to hide before the heaviest rain struck. When it passed I continued. Almost 27 km done ?

I’m in Puredistance I today, haven’t worn it for a while.

I start to look forward to my holidays that will start on June 1. I’ll be going to Gdańsk for some local leisuring without going abroad. Also my first covid vaccine is coming on Wednesday.

      Have a happy mother’s day.

I had a hard time with reactions to my MDNA shots, particularly the second. I strongly recommend making sure that you have plenty of digestive medicines on hand.

I just got a carnival glass candy dish, a pillar candle holder, and a pair of hand carved wooden fork and spoon with giraffe heads in them for 1.50 at a yard sale. My shirt smells like EA green tea from yesterday. I don’t know how or why, but it really lasts well for me. 81 degrees, sun, and a nice breeze. I’m going to the rat park later for excercise. The day looks great, except for those awful rats. Hope the feral cats move in and TCB.

It got better! Usually Goodwill is dollar store junk, but I found an antique Turkish coffee pot with a signature on it. The going price is 125 and up. I will probably keep it.

Sweet! Congrats on the find! The last time I visited Goodwill downtown SF, I found a nearly complete set of Rosenthal China, including a gravy boat and two serving platters. Average price was $1.50-$2 per item but including my MIL’s senior discount, it went down 50%.

I have to stop finding things, or start selling them, or get a bigger place. The dish is amber and doesn’t go with my decor, but it is beautiful and I couldn’t pass for 50 cents.

I’m wearing Lost Cherry today for the first time. A while back someone mentioned Royalty Scents and I’m trying a subscription. The prices are good and they have some things I haven’t bought decants of because of the price.

Hooray for the weekend! My favorite scent to wear back in my Goth days was Magie Noire, I’m wearing the EDT with a dab of the perfume. A little glamorous to be doing laundry but here we are.

We’ll head out in a bit to meet friends for Dim Sum. Both are former colleagues whom I haven’t seen since prior to the Pandemic, I am so excited to meet up! 😀

I have a wonderful memory of dim sum in 1995 at a restaurant in San Francisco which a was a four story, narrow building that was packed and we had to walk up to the top floor to get a table. Almost everyone there except us either was or spoke Chinese and the servers just brought us what everyone else was having. So much fun!

May I suggest this recent NIN/Health collab for some goth listening? Lol.

Boy, what I wouldn’t give to see that venue/concert again.
Also saw Peter Murphy opening for the Church, we were close enough to touch his boots, the venue was Club Park Avenue in Tallahassee FL. A friend still has Peter Murphy’s hand-written play list. Iggy Pop opening for the Pretenders back in the day was fun. And Psychedelic Furs. White Zombie was a fantastic concert. All such great memories. It takes a certain kind of commitment being a Goth in FL when it’s 95% humidity most of the year.

Yesterday I went and had a microdermabrasion and a calming facial after. It…was…wonderful.
Beautiful sunny SoCal morning sipping coffee and catching up on emails and New York Times.
    Mani pedi later.

Many years ago, I asked my partner to move out and then left town for 3 days to a hot springs (a trip I’d already had planned and decided to go ahead with). I got my scheduled massage the next day and just balled the entire time. The masseuse was very understanding.

I was surprised how comforting it was! Normally, I am loathe to cry in public, or in front of anyone for that matter. But, somehow, it felt ok. I hope your tears felt ok, too!

          • Isabella says:
            22 May 2021 at 4:11 pm

I cried my way through a haircut, of all things, a few years ago, and my very kind hairdresser told me that people break down crying in her salon chair *all the time.* Granted, I get special 2-hour-long curly-girl haircuts and there’s lots of time to talk about our personal lives… I’m sure massage therapists see lots of tears and have an accepting place in their hearts for them!

          • austenfan says:
            22 May 2021 at 4:42 pm

Are your curly girl haircuts by any chance done following the CurlSys system?
I had one of those on Thursday and it took nearly two hours to get it done. Granted my hair had not been cut in nearly 6 months or so.

          • Isabella says:
            22 May 2021 at 5:07 pm

They’re via the “Deva cut” method. Sometimes they take as much as 2 1/2 hours but I always get tea and fashion magazines, along with a complete download on my hairdresser’s love life.

          • austenfan says:
            22 May 2021 at 7:04 pm

just briefly comparing the two systems online the deva cut seems to take even more time.
CurlSys changed my haircutting experiences a lot. I used to loath having my hair cut as it would always be very hit and miss, but these days it’s mostly good.

My hairdresser told me all about the consequences of Covid measures on her work. Mind you, communication was not that easy, I can understand German very well, but struggle speaking it. I always seem to end up with French sentences in my head.

I have wept during a massage, before. I suspect massage therapists see a lot of emotional releases like that, along with the physical release of tension.

I am a believer that our bodies hold onto everything. and we work out pain, grief and sorrow through our bodies or not.
We know what happens without human touch. So, yes, weep on.

I’m jealous of the short nappers of the world. I don’t think I can nap in under 90 minutes. I conk out, go into full sleep with dreams and everything. So, usually I avoid it because it can really mess with my bedtime! Not this week, though.

      I love Ninfeo Mio!!
At times, it can go a bit cat pee on me, but I don’t mind. I find it very similar to Fico di Amalfi from Blu Mediterraneo.
Sometimes, I wear them both, one on each wrist!
I have been very much enjoying Figuier Eden from Armani, but it is much lighter.
To my nose, these are all fig TREE fragrances, not fruit. It is the scent of the branches and leaves that I enjoy!

Three cheers for the weekend, the more so because 1) our neighborhood swimming pool has re-opened for business after being closed all last year, and my kiddo and I are headed there this afternoon for splashes and soft serve, and 2) we’re headed to the mountains for a 3-day camping trip on Sunday, which will be our first vacation in almost two years (wildfire evacuations don’t count). Wearing liberal rubbings of Beach body oil to get in the vacation spirit, and I’ll likely spritz on some Neroli Portofino, my go-to summer scent, to make it official.

Never had a Goth phase myself, but my closest jr. high friend would have been Goth if Gothness had existed in the early 70s. I’m working my way through season one of NCIS and Abby is my favorite Goth of all time. SOTM is Italian Leather for a cool, slightly damp morning here.

I haven’t seen it, either, Robin. But that’s not really fair. I haven’t seen a full episode of Seinfeld, either, and maybe only 1 full episode of Friends. Oh, and only perhaps half a season of Game of Thrones? I usually have no idea what people are talking about. 😀

I am actually among the last, I suspect – it’s been on for 16 seasons, still going strong, and I’m just now watching season one. It’s pretty good, holds up reasonably well to the passage of time. If you like Bosch, you might like NCIS.

I’m in JD Labdanum Doux (autocorrect wanted that to be Doug?) which I expected to be heavier than it is. This one and his Vanille are actually quite “airy” to my nose and remind me of JCE’s style.
You guys! My daughter and I went to Sephora yesterday and the testers were out! And perfume!? I was so happy and maybe it’s just my imagination but all the sales associates seemed especially friendly and chipper too. It had to be draining constantly reminding customers not to touch. Surely I couldn’t have been the only one.?

Today is sunny and gorgeous! Trying to just enjoy the day and not be sad that my 2 week staycation and life events that I was looking forward to have come to an end. Back to life, back to reality.?

Still working on waking up this morning, so no SOTD, yet. My day is mostly unscheduled, thank goodness, so after lifting this morning I might be brave and wander towards some shops, just to see if they aren’t too busy and I can see something different than my house for a change. I like the idea of having some podcasts on my phone to listen to while looking at clothes or antiques or something else frivolous.

I mentioned early in the pandemic that wearing a mask was triggering PTSD flashbacks for me, and I’m happy to report that with lots of treatment this year, that is getting better. I’m not *all good*, but I can often go long enough for it to not be an issue nowadays. I can feel myself reacting and can usually settle myself without having to run outside and tear my mask off. So, that’s progress!

I spent the morning helping set up for our school’s outdoor prom tonight. I was the only person who wasn’t afraid of ladders or heights, so I was the person up in trees hanging string lights. It’s going to be so gorgeous for the kids.

    SotD = Jour d’Hermes

Sunshine in a bottle! Makes me so happy, and I’m wearing FOURSPRAYSTHATSALOTFORME from the gigantic bottle I bought on sale at TJ Maxx a few years ago.

It’s a refill bottle that came with a cute gold purse spray in a velvet bag. I thought I was doing something good by rescuing it and giving it a happy home. Told myself that it was a great deal — twice the size and half the price of a bottle from an online discounter at the time. Of course we all know this way leads to fragrant madness. 😉

Happy weekend, everybody. I hope your day makes you smile.

Sprayed myself earlier with Guerlain Vetiver; its still going strong. I overlayered it with Limoncello (perfume, not the delicious drink). Vetiver is winning out!

We just got back from a quick grocery trip and ran into 2 people we know. Hardly ever happens, but it was nice to have a quick chat with them. One person was my hubby’s nephew who bought a condo in our city (right by the beach). We haven’t seen him for 2 Christmases plus! He invited us over after we all get our 2nd vax. And we also also saw a former co-worker who was heading out boating for the long weekend! It was nice to see some familiar friendly faces. Now off to the backyard to do some weeding!

Waiting for the sun to come out at least a little bit so I can go for a walk. I’ll still walk if it’s cloudy, but I really want to hold out a little bit longer for sun. I think we’re going to grab some lunch while out walking and then plan to go to a nearby used bookstore for the first time in a year plus. A big bonus is that it’s a bookstore where cats live, so I’ll also get to hang out with kitties while masked, hopefully minimizing my allergies.

No SOTD yet, but yesterday I wore Copal Azur for the CP. It’s amazing how long lasting it is. Two sprays to each arm and to my neck at 8 a.m., and it was still present last night.

Feeling kinda sad that the friend I hang out with often (we’ve taken many walks together this last year) just flew to Missouri today to spend 4-5 weeks with her family. I guess it’ll be solo walks and hangs with the boyfriend for me while she’s gone. Most other friendly acquaintances I have here don’t live close to me, and I currently am without a car to go meet up with anyone. Oh, well. I’ll just have to satisfy myself with phone calls and texts with my closest friends, who all live far away. My friend and I took a really nice two hour walk after work yesterday, so that was good. I love that she’s become more interested in identifying and smelling flowers and plants via taking walks with me. ?

I had an interesting walk today. The weather had been putting my off walking this past week or so, and I was getting fed up.
So I decided now was not the time to be a wimp and off I went. Well I had it all: torrential rain, hail, lightning, thunder, a tree crashing. It was rather scary but it all ended well. I was almost tempted to sing that famous Kate Bush song: Heathcliff, it’s me, I’m Cathy
    I’ve come home, I’m so cold….

I wore Un Zest de Rose which is not very Wuthering Heights ?

Mon Parfum Chéri par Camille perhaps?

I read the Brontë novels when I was still in my teens and enjoyed them a lot at the time. I’ve since reread bits of Jane Eyre and interestingly it did nothing for me.
I never reread Wuthering Heights, but I’ve heard the song loads of times. I think Kate Bush did another concert a few years back and apparently it was excellent.
Another of her songs I appreciate a lot is her duet with Peter Gabriel.

My garden is exploding with growth and I picked my first home-grown zucchini of the season today. First tomato was a couple of days ago! I ended up wearing vintage Jicky EDT earlier on my walk and to the used bookstore. Made friends with the sweetest black cat that lives at the bookstore. This bookstore hosts a number of cats, and I believe they’re adoptable. I think I picked the friendliest one to give a little back rub to while it was sleeping in a bed on the floor. Its motor started up immediately (the loudest purrs!), and it ended up licking my hand by the end of our time together. I bought 5 books that I’m excited to read.

Post shower tonight I’m in Francesca Bianchi Black Knight.

Vintage Jicky EDT sounds lovely and what a lucky bookstore kitty!

And you mentioned walking earlier – maybe you and I and Springpansy can find a time to walk in the coming weeks – perhaps the Arboretum? There’s nothing quite as beautiful as Spring in Seattle.

SOTD is Madragore by Annick Goutal, which is in fact, vaguely Goth.
    Unlike myself.

To me black dresses or suits are suitably chic for trips to NYC museums or for serious job interviews, rather than as the color of rebellion.

Sunday morning another 11 hours sleep.
Same place on sofa sipping coffee and reading Times
I found an unopened bottle of Chanel 5 perfume elixir yesterday while digging for corso como. Whooo hoooo!
Going to walk the headlands later along Palos Verdes.
I have a project offer to meditate on. 7 months maternity leave coverage for a company that owns many of the fragrance houses we love, like or wonder about.

Congratulations on everything coming up ? ?! A found perfume is a fantastic gift, truly a buried treasure.
I would grab that job in a heartbeat, if they offered free bottles ?. It has to depend on the job, if you think that the work you will be doing will be fulfilling and enjoyable, great!

      Best of luck whichever direction!

      Great news all around.

Wow, two wonderful happenings! The Elixir Sensuel is so nice. That’s fantastic, finding a bottle. Can I come clean your house? ?

The job sounds wonderful, and even if it’s not quite what you are looking for, it’s only a few months. Whatever decision you make, I’m sure it will be the right one for you.

well, nl, you would have to clean all the house….and garage!
I am at an age where any project longer than 6-7 months is too long. I want to move on.
        Yes, discounts are involved.
I would work east coast hours but would be done by 2pm.
currently I start UK hours and end in HK hours, which is why I sleep so long on weekend.

SOTD is Pas de Soir by BDK. So very pretty.
I recently purchased Gris Charnel and have another to add to the list, ?.

Super hot day out and will play with either putting up a couple more splits and organizing or…

    Purchase Mandy Aftel’s class?

    Have a great Sunday!

Happy Sunday everyone! I’m in Oriental Lounge again, still loving it. It’s been rainy all week, but we needed it here.
I made banana muffins yesterday, a small batch of six. Less to have hanging around. We’ll have leftover chicken and veggies today for lunch and I’ll do something with the Mantequilla beans simmering away on the stove. Trying to stay busy and grateful. ?

In Jazmin Sarai How You Love. Nice and easy.

We got our house painted this weekend. It went from tired white to a beautiful warm sage green. I keep on going outside to look at it ❤️

This is all part of the plan of getting the house sale-ready. But I’m finding the more work I do on the house the more I like it! There’s very low inventory in my town anyway so we will probably stay put for another year

My mom decided on seafood last night. I am not a seafood fan and had chicken. Think it’s because of the smell and texture and ended up breaking a tooth while eating fish once. It’s going to be a lazy Sunday and I am in no 22 extrait.

SotD: Alien Fusion from a sample; FB ordered; might have been too impulsive but a good price and I have loved this both times I tested. Question for NST’ers: have any of you sniffed both AdV Oeilett Savage and EL vintage/vintage-ish Cinnabar? I held back from the split because I wondered if my hoard of Cinnabar would fill the need? I was going on Fragrantica note list of OS: “turmeric, cinnamon, black pepper, cardamom, cloves and saffron; middle notes are rose, white pepper, big strawberry and floral notes; base notes are vanilla, tolu balsam, benzoin and labdanum. ” If you don’t have a comparison, does the OS *really* have BIG STRAWBERRY?? I do love strawberries in perfume; oddly, not so much in real life unless they are home-grown (or in Breyer’s Strawberry ice cream 🙂 ) Best wishes for the week ahead and yeah for Splitmeet! <3

      Do you mean Oeilett Bengale?
If so, I do not find them similar. I also did not get any Strawberry.
On my skin, I picked up mostly carnation and ambroxan.
I’m hyper sensitive to both notes though, so hopefully someone else will chime in.

I did mean Oeilett Bengale! Thanks for the clarification and the comment. Funny a perfume would announce a note of “Big Strawberry” but dedicated sniffer like you would not notice it. Wonder if it is really there!

I do not detect any strawberry in Oeillet Bengale, let alone big strawberry! I wore it a few weeks ago, but I had no idea strawberry was a note in it, so I wasn’t trying to sniff for it. For me, it’s mostly a spicy floral with some incense in the dry down.

You guys I am so furious with the customer service I had tonight at the Wendy’s drive through window. I actually drove back through to make a complaint, but stopped myself because of fear of being recorded and being called a Karen. So, now I’m mad at myself for not following through, and will call corporate tomorrow.
My sotd is Arizona by Proenza something… lol, once again too lazy to get up and look. I smell good though.

I just sprayed some more to see. Sniffing up close, I smell a little fruitiness. I would not guess strawberry though. This is my first wearing, and I am still figuring it out.
