Penhaligon’s Racquets ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 17 May 2021 10 Comments

Penhaligon’s has launched Racquets, a new iteration of the discontinued 1989 fragrance.

Tenacious, uplifting, invigorating – and that’s before one steps onto the court. Bright, bouncing lemon doubles up with strapping leather in this sparkling eau de parfum. Do try and be a good sport.

Additional notes include paradisione, gaiac, limbanol and ambrox.

Penhaligon’s Racquets is available in 30 and 100 ml Eau de Parfum.

(via penhaligons, additional information via harrods)

Update: Racquets was developed by perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin.

Wow…sounds really unappealing but at least they list the chemicals

It does not sound that appealing to me either, but I think this fragrance was beloved once upon a time? No idea how it’s changed.

R: Sounded better for sure back in the day: lemon, bergamot, linden blossom, geranium, lavender, clove, ylang-ylang, oakmoss, incense, cedar, vetiver, amber, musk.

New version sounds pared down, with limbanol, paradisione and ambrox substituting for LOTS of notes.

Ah, thanks. But also, not at all claiming that the above is a complete list of notes. Penhaligon’s did not list them at all (on US website, at least) so that is from Harrods. But if the original did not have leather, does sound like they’re going in a different direction.

The brand calls it “a new modern interpretation”, and it appears the juice and ribbon colors also differ from the original. I haven’t tried either, but the reformulation does hold appeal.

If modern means substituting a good list of notes with chemicals…

Though to be fair the original was also probably full of just as many chemicals , but back then they hid them behind more natural-sounding names
