Tuesday scent of the day 5/11

Posted by Robin on 11 May 2021 237 Comments

It's Tuesday and Salvador Dali's birthday. (And a reminder: the haiku challenge is coming up on Saturday!) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Lush Kerbside Violet for Stevie Wonder's 2020 ballad Where Is Our Love Song. Proceeds from the song went to Feeding America.

Reminder: on 5/14 we're celebrating Stevie Wonder's birthday (a day late...he turns 71 on Thursday). Tell us your favorite Stevie Wonder song and wear the fragrance to match.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Also wearing Lush today: Lust, which is actually my favourite jasmine. Everything about it works for me.

Every time someone wears Lust I want another bottle of Flying Fox, and maybe some of that jasmine henna too.

I decided to keep exploring the CdG Incense series. Today is Ouarzazate. The first thing that I thought when I put it on was – herbal. When I checked the notes Fragrantica said it included sage and desert plants, so I assume that is what I’m smelling. I’m enjoying it.

The CdG Incense series is really good. I love a good herbal scent, L’ Eau Trois has a nice blast of herbs with resins.

I had a decant of L’Eau Trois. I think that the last time I noticed it, the dacant had mostly evaporated. If I’m wrong, I’ll try it again. I thought it skewed too masculine for me when I first tried it. These days there are many “masculine” fragrances that I love or that I’m anxious to try.

I love L’ Eau Trois when it’s really hot, also beautiful in the cool weather. I find it works better when it’s dry/low humidity out.

After my tantrum about cold weather yesterday, someone suggested I just wear my warmer weather scents anyway. This is a good and sensible suggestion!

So I’m in Diorissimo today, since I always think of it as a spring scent. The LOTV is blooming, so even if I feel too cold, it’s still completely appropriate. Still doesn’t feel quite right for some of my more citrus-forward scents, but this is really nice for today. And it’s sunny out, so I’m definitely happier than yesterday.

Good Morning all, my SOTD is Rem, by Reminiscence. I want something light, Mr. SmokeyToes and I are headed to the dentist in a little bit. I’ll apply Cool Tropic Palm by Comptoir Sud Pacifique after we get home. My goal, when we get to the dentist, is for me to climb 22 flights of stairs instead of taking the elevator. The last time, I was winded at the top. I’m interested to see if my stamina has improved.

We had to give SmokeyToes a dose of medicine this morning, he was decidedly ‘not’ pleased, we both are nursing our wounds.

I finished the Paris Library, by Jennifer S. Charles, what a lovely and engaging read. I simply couldn’t put it down. My next read is by Stacey Abrams, While Justice Sleeps, and Broken Horses, by Brandi Carlile.
    Everyone have a marvelous day!

We used to have a cat named Felix growing up that needed a towel and two people, one of whom was wearing a leather jacket, to get pilled. Thankfully our cats these days are more forgiving.

Excellent! We did it! All 22 flights! Actually, given the interstitial floors, it was more like 24 floors.
The look on the building attendant’s face when we asked for stair access to the 22nd floor was hilarious. Worth the trip.

In fifteen sprays of Chanel No.19 Poudre for my first day back to work in the office. I am glad I can still smell it after 4 hours and wearing a mask.

Very busy day. I am missing my second cup of coffee, but I will remedy that at lunch time when I go outside.
The subway commute was a bit rough, but the day here is going ok, so far. I was notified when I arrived early this morning that this month I will be working only on Tuesdays, instead of two days a week, as previously scheduled. There are new employees starting to work this month and they had to safely fit them in the schedule. I am perfectly fine with it.

    Happy Tuesday, everyone! ?

      15 sprays?! lol!

Still no serious talk of heading back to the office although it is open for those that really cannot work from home any longer. We are hiring at a fast clip so I’m really not sure how they will figure this out space-wise. We were already at capacity and expect another 100+ by year’s end. I’m happy with WFH for now.

Poudre is so fleeting that I had to make it last, and it is working! ?

If they are hiring here, it means we are in good shape and safe in our positions. Some of our employees either retired or quit during the pandemic and moved to other states, so I guess they are filling the empty spaces now. Let’s see how it goes in the next couple of weeks.

I think it is very pretty and an easy-going scent, and I’d like to purchase something new for spring/summer season. I love the bottle too.

I have been engaged in lots of important vanilla work in recent days
?…was prowling around on Fragrantica for unsniffed vanillas and bought some decants off the bay of Evil.

In Lancome La Vie Est Belle Intensément today…which was released in 2020 not to be confused with an earlier flanker called Intense as they often are. It’s a sweet floral gourmand w/ raspberries, jasmine and vanilla. Nice but nothing groundbreaking and doesn’t smell like the original LVEB.

In the last couple days, sampled two from Mizensir…Solar Blossom and Poudre d’Or…enjoyed both and will try them again later this week.

Also tried two from Jimmy Choo part of the Seduction Collection I now realize 😉 …link below and no affiliation to the brand or Fragrantica. I sampled Vanilla Love and Iris Crush…also both pretty good and need to revisit.

It seems like Vanilla Quest has become Vanilla Existence. 😉

Service and delivery here in the Great White North is A+++ at least, I assume it works equally well for Stateside considering the volume of Canadians complaining that you guys are nabbing all the good stuff ?

I must say the drydown of this LVEB flanker is very good…maybe it’s orange blossom w/ the vanilla? I used to struggle w/ orange blossom but now, over the last couple months when mixed w/ vanilla, I can’t seem to get enough! Like a new synapse is firing in my brain…behold the power of vanilla! 🙂

Scent: TDC Tokyo Bloom on one arm, and La Danza Delle Libellule on the other. I don’t wear gourmands, but I’m enjoying this one…only thing is, I believe that the apple note needs to be less red and more green (as in Granny Smith). So I added some Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat. I would have to play with the proportions to move it where I want it.

    Tea: Upton Lemon Drop

Joining those who have Isn’t She Lovely in mind, in my case paired with SMN Eva. Since hajusuuri goaded … er, encouraged ? … me into springing for a FB, I’ve been spraying my decant somewhat lavishly. I have to say that Eva benefits from a generous application. Lovely lemon-and-black-pepper vibe over a gentle orange blossom.

I’m meeting out in the woods today with a rep for a local landowner who lost everything in one of last year’s wildfires. I’m heartbroken for her, but her rep is pushing for a major post-fire logging operation in sensitive habitat and my job is to show up and make everyone happy (including the woodpeckers). I went with Rose Flash for today to convince all parties of my goodness and benevolence. 🙂

It worked! The rep was totally easygoing, offered me an iced coffee, *and* called me “young lady,” which is both at odds with but wonderfully corrective of the largeish birthday I just had. I think we’ll wind up with a good plan that balances the landowner’s desire for a “cleaned-up” forest with said forest’s tender, post-fire needs.

Sampling multiple perfume samples and decants at the same time, the past two days, I haven’t been able to remember what smells so darn good.
Longevity will play a factor this time. I am trying to decide if I should step outside of my comfort zone with a beautiful Iris, tuberose that i actually like or tropical perfume. I ‘d like a comfort scent, which I have two ideas or a gorgeous patchouli. Again, two options.

Comfort or non-comfort? How do you choose?

SotD Eldo Vierges et Toreros, paired with the song “For Once in my Life” as it’s the only tuberose-featuring perfume I enjoy on my skin so far (bubblegum does NOT become me, no matter what tuberose thinks!)

Trying to decide what to potentially do this Friday apart from work – it’s my 40th birthday (which tells you already which Stevie song I’ll pick!), I work 9-6:30, and currently live alone in a city under lockdown where I have relatively few friends.

On the other hand, I don’t normally celebrate bdays at all so I don’t feel obligated to do anything. Considering getting myself slightly indulgent takeout sushi…

    Good Morning!

    1) SOTD: in Ambery Saffron, the dupe for Baccarat Rouge 40. I have decided that this is a sci fi /new age scent, and will go perfectly and weirdly with Wonder’s Journey Throught the Secret Life of Plants soundtrack.

    2) About my job (to Haj, if she is on today and any others):

About two weeks ago or so we had an emergency meeting, out of the blue, on a Friday afternoon. A meeting dump on a Friday afternoon is NEVER good, so I braced myself for bad news.
And it was bad news! I addition to merging our profitable section with the money losing but more robust tech section, my company then decided that IT support & fintech support would be outsource to a ‘partner’ who will have workers do our jobs in Central America and Phillipines.

This was not so much of a surprise, to be honest; open and needed positions have been not filled. Work has piled up (with me getting the latest load upon the retirement of a wonderful co worker) while wages have been stagnant.

Some people were shocked and disappointed- I am jaded by now. So while I will be doing my kitchen (and paying for it out of wages rather than go deeply into debt) I will be getting my dismissal letter by July 5. I have been asked to create a training schema for the new people that will be taking over; I have thought about it because I am a good trainer. But given the workload, I simply can’t and won’t sacrifice even more of my time to something I won’t even be paid for.

I don’t mind so much the training of the replacement people- it has to be done. What I do mind is the frenzied push to get as much work out of the remaining staff as possible, and the absolute lack of empathy where this push for more, more, more comes from.

A former boss I did not like at all left me with this advice: no one will prioritize you and your career except yourself. Definitely good advice, far and few in between.

Training schema sounds like an outline of a sequence of training. I would deliver exactly what they asked for. If they need content, you can say the firm needs to have someone else do the work you inherited from the colleague who just retired PLUS 25-50% of your job so you can work on training content. You can also become a contractor after your last day but you need to check what the rules are regarding severance.

The last time my company outsourced IT (and took most of our employees in these roles), it went on for a few years before a decision was made to insource.

      Good luck!

        1) This is so, so true.

        2) I have completed the schema with a white paper so that the work flow can be efficient; however I already informed the firm that I cannot do the training under the timeframe they want without a significant raise in pay.

        3) We will find out if contracting is available after we get the official dismissal letter. Usually contracting is a LOT MORE than being an employee in the IT space, and these people know it, thus the push to S Q U E E Z E as much productivity as can be done from us.

        4) Yes! Because outside people rarely understand how to prioritize needs in a company space! Sigh.

        5) I can do this! Thank you!

In SJP Lovely You – for the song Isn’t She Lovely 😉

I got a rollerball to try it out, and like it a lot (sort of like Sarah Horowitz Perfect Veil without the vanilla). It sits by me desk and I reapply throughout the day. I also bought a 1.7oz bottle and body spray mist set from Kohls for $20, and to get free shipping bought a set of sheets that turned out really well so a big overall win. 🙂

Wearing Dior Bois d’Argent and Goutal Des Lys. Both Nice in very different ways.

I can be quite absent minded at the best of times and my mind being constantly in overdrive doesn’t help, so I went to the shops in two different pairs of shoes today!

Excellent! I have never managed 2 different shoes but I’ve done that with socks often enough. I’ve also gone out with one eye “made up” and the other not — another reason it’s just as well I quit makeup altogether.

Why am I afraid of Twilly? I’ve had a sample on hand for years now, and the Hermes fragrances and I tend to get on *very* well, so what’s the deal? I think something about the marketing makes me think it’s going to be too ladies-who-lunch for me…

Thanks for the good luck wishes yesterday, everyone! Everything’s going well so far. It’s much bigger than my old branch but everyone’s been very welcoming.

SOTD is Tocca Cleopatra, which I always want to like more than I do, I got a mini a long time ago as a Sephora reward, I think? But I don’t get along with grapefruit.

I’m glad the new work scene is good! As for Cleopatra, I’ve not smelled the Tocca fragrance but I certainly don’t think “grapefruit” when I imagine its namesake. Then again, my mental image of Cleopatra has been forever marred by this: https://www.world-archaeology.com/world/africa/egypt/cleopatra-was-no-beauty-coins-shows/

Tocca has to shoehorn its inspirations into all being light and pretty little things, even if they were edgier than that.

    SOTD = Diptyque Volutes EDT

I could pair this with Isn’t She Lovely ☺️

    It’s one of us favorites:
    https://www.instagram.com/p/COvrOCLhnsl/?igshid=1403fx1ikc6mj

Also, I’m not confident about identifying flowers but I’ve seen enough irises in pictures and drawings that I stopped to take a picture of what I thought were irises and sure enough, they were:

In other news, I heard that pale skinned animal noses may be prone to get skin cancer. The radio vet mentioned using a permanent marker to darken the snoot. Would you do that to your pet?

Using a Sharpie on my dog?!? Oh, heck no. The Wild One has a light, brownish pink nose, and we use baby sunblock on her. Also, we walk her in the morning or late evening.

You are a teacher of all things Iris. You seriously made me laugh. I have them in my yard and I couldn’t identify the iris note. Thanks for the giggle.

And, heck no! Nothing touches my babies nose except Musher, sniffy gross things and me kissing her. That has to be bad for a pup. I could get high sniffing a sharpie. I think ?.

Yep, definitely bicolor bearded iris! Some of them smell wonderful.

No chance in Hades of me putting marker ink on a kitty’s pink nose! Some of the ingredients in ink are probably worse for them than UV exposure.

Song of the Day (not Stevie Wonder): https://youtu.be/QHhNt6q06_k

This song has acquired more meaning to it in the past 15 months, some of it kind of disturbing.

On a happier note, I was able to have a brief phone conversation with my Mom today! She sounded pretty good, all things considered. My brother made sure to call me while he was visiting her this afternoon, and we chatted on his phone. It was SO good to hear her voice.

SOTD = back in Opium EdP.

It’s been a hectic day, and still going. I’m wearing Jimmy Choo edp. I love this perfume. I stopped wearing it because I thought it cursed me the winter of 2014. Still thinking about my scent-Stevie Wonder paring, but SotD is Amouage Opus III. It is wonderful! Late in the day, I started getting the ambergris accord – a sweet, papery type – and I was swooning. It will take me many more wearings to get to know it and I look forward to them!

I’m wearing a touch of real oud oil, because this New York Times magazine article reminded me that mine is langishing:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/10/t-magazine/fragrance-perfume-orientalism.html?action=click&module=Features&pgtype=Homepage

It’s a bit all over the place, as NYT magazine articles often are, but many parts are really beautiful and interesting.
