Tuesday scent of the day 3/30

Posted by Robin on 30 March 2021 166 Comments

It's Tuesday, National Doctors Day and Pencil Day. Birthdays today: Vincent Willem van Gogh, Eric Clapton, Tracy Chapman. (And a quick PSA: Donatella will be dropping by on Thursday!) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm still on the weekend, with Arielle Shoshana Sunday. Tea at the moment is Upton Cacao Kisses Colombian black tea, with a sprinkle of nutmeg.

Reminder: 4/2 is International Children’s Book Day. Name a favorite children's book and wear a fragrance to match.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Good morning Y’all,

Going thru some of my forgotten goodies that haven’t gotten a lot of attention lately, and landed on Juliette Has a Gun Sunny Side Up. I forget how much I like this one. It’s wearing a bit heavy at the moment, but it should soften up soon…..

I really need to do a good look through the decants, and throw away the spoiled ones and wear the others that are being ignored!

I’m not wearing anything yet – it’s a lazy morning.

Yesterday I found out that there’s an open-air mall with a Lush about 30 minutes from my house, so I went to get some more Rose Jam shower gel. While there, I tested their Confetti fragrance. It went nuclear sweet violet on my skin. If you’re a fan of Lush’s violet scents you might like this one.

How long does the Rose Jam shower gel fragrance linger? I usually don’t use much scented bath/body products because I don’t want it to interfere with my scent but everyone always speaks so highly of that one it makes me want to try it!

Maybe 30 minutes? Not long after I’ve showered. But it’s so glorious while I’m showering that I love it. The only other shower gels I’ve ever enjoyed so much have been Tramp (Lush, discontinued) and Bathing Culture’s Mind and Body Wash.

( No affiliation! But I loved it so much after buying the 8 oz size that I bought the 32 oz glass refill and next time I will buy the gallon.).

Unfortunately, like most of the rest of the line, Vanille Pineapple is long discontinued. If you want a very good pineapple-heavy scent, though, Demeter Pineapple is just the thing. You could maybe layer it with CSP Vanille Extreme.

I’m wearing Narciso for Her edp, from a 10ml spray that I purchased years ago. Robin had a lemming of a set of three sprays, which included either two edts and one edp, or vice versa. I gave the extra to my sister. It’s been years since I’ve worn this, and I’m not a huge fan. I think I’ll enjoy the edt more.

This is a decant from the bell jar that I got in a swap a while ago. I have never tried the one from the black bottle, so I don’t know if there is any difference between the two.

I only have the Profundis in the bell jar as well. I have had it for quite a while and wore it on Sunday. It still smells beautiful. But I agree with you all regarding the new bottles. I have lots of his perfumes in the rectangular bottles and three bell jars. I do not own any of the fragrances in the new bottles.

Thank you, Petunia! I agree with you that the bottles are not that appealing anymore and if the scents are getting reformulated with each change, so even worse. All the bottles I have are the plain, clear rectangular ones and I love them!

I’m in Jicky edt, from a swap with a lovely NSTer—I definitely got the better end of the deal. I love this one. If I had to choose a book from my childhood to match, it would probably be Cinchfoot, which was a cloth-covered hardcopy book owned by my mother when she was little. I can only vaguely recall the story–which I think was told from the vantage point of the horse Cinchfoot—this perfume makes me think of leather saddles and hay, sweetened with vanilla.

You smell wonderful! I bought a bottle of Jicky last year when I got nervous that it didn’t seem to be available from any U.S. retailers. It invariably makes me think about Colette’s stories, simply since she wore it.

Is your Jicky edt a recent formulation? I love the mini I have of vintage edp and wish that the recent formulation was more integrated. The stinky elements are much more pronounced in the bottle I bought a year ago. Maybe I’ll go on a mid-vintage hunt so that I can compare.

I’m not sure. I inherited it in a swap a few years ago, and I am guessing it was already a couple of years old–so maybe 5 or 6 years old in total? I find it pretty integrated–as compared to Le Lion by Chanel which is much heavier on the leather to my nose.

No scent yet, off to the dentist soon. Got a rare compliment from DH yesterday on Aedes Cierge de Lune, though.

Vaccine Appointment Roulette begins for my age group on Thursday. We have 2 weeks to score an appt before the state opens it up to everyone. Yeah that’s going to work out great for folks my age. So much for priorities… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhxlZC8BZJ4

None of it should be this hard, pixel. I’m at the point where this statement has become a tired refrain. Opening packaging, reading labels, making appointments, getting broken stuff fixed, using any and all services that have transitioned to being fully online, generating passwords, filling out forms, managing to speak to an actual person, having that person be capable of fixing your problem, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera (channeling Yul Brynner there, for folks in my age group).

But vaccinations in the Era Of The Pandemic? Should be as easy as entering your name in an appointment calendar, and then driving down to the corner pharmacy.

I’m one of the lazy crowd this morning, but it’s because I woke at 2:30 and took forever to get back to sleep. Might go with Violet Blonde again for Pencil Day.

On children’s books, we had one when I was little that was about naughty socks disappearing in the night, but I can’t recall the name of the book or the author (making it very hard to track down). The illustrations of the runaway sock creatures were the best part, like a cross between Sendak and Gorey, with angry expressions and little black stick legs. I would pair it with Feu Secret.

The hits have been OJ Nawab of Oudh, Amouage Dia Woman, and Diptyque Orphéon. I watched Persolaise’s video on Orphéon and I agree with it being intriguing. I expected it to be kind of dirty but maybe French bars are not like that, just ours here. But it’s kind of fresh, and the smokiness appeared only after a couple of hours, and even then it was soft. I liked it a lot. Dia & Nawab were also pretty great.

The misses are MEMO Sintra and Initio Rehab. Based on the notes I should like Rehab but I found it uncomfortable to wear, a bit too powdery. And Sintra doesn’t remind me of marshmallows but rather a honey flavoured sticky sweet candy that we used to eat in my childhood. It’s too sweet for me.

You gotta cope, indeed. As mechanisms go, perfume samples are pretty darn healthy, I’d say.

I saw a squirrel fall out of a tree this morning. It didn’t fall too far and got up and ran back up the tree afterwards, so I guess it wasn’t hurt, but I was surprised, they are usually so sure-footed. It’s cold and cloudy outside so I am waiting for it to warm up before going out. In the meantime I’m reading a trashy novel and cuddling with the kitties.
    I’m wearing D600.

Squirrels are the dare devils of the backyard critters. I have one (maybe it’s more than one — I can’t tell) that jumps from tree to tree so fast I can’t believe he is actually aiming. He just jumps and assumes he’ll land on branch at some point. I’ve seen him fall and get up like it was nothing, too.

I’ve seen a squirrel deliberately jump off a 3rd story deck to the ground below to escape a situation and run off completely undamaged afterwards.

I once saw a squirrel fall from a very very tall oak. He hit the ground, bounced, then just lay there. I thought he was a goner, so I went to get a shovel to move him out of the sight of my then very young children. By the time I got back outside to the oak that squirrel was gone. He must have woken up and run back up the tree. 😉

Testing A Lab on Fire’s Hossegor today in my quest for a Damp Forest & Juniper scent that lives up to the one in my head. I like this quite a bit, even if it isn’t what I am looking for. It has mineral and saline notes that make it more complex than what I want. I can’t place why, but it is reminding me of the last semester of high school, when there was quite a bit of hanging out, in the nice Spring weather, with friends and semi-friends in a last hurrah kind of way. We did go to the beach a lot and it would have been too cold to swim, so maybe I’m remembering the smell of the beach without suntan lotion mixed with the spring fresh air and a waft of those pine forest car fresheners that we all had. This smells like that, exuberance and all.

Drinking a cup of sencha left over from my tea advent calendar and looking forward to a pot of Anastasia this afternoon.

It’s unseasonably warm today, so I’m unseasonably wearing Thé Pour Une Été along with a very summery Reformation top that I treated myself to as an early birthday present. Every bird in the neighborhood is singing through the open windows, my little one is busily kindergartening on the other side of the room, and I’m fielding various Concerned Emails about a big post-fire hazard tree removal project that I’m managing and that just got underway. But they can’t get me; I smell too good.

Also preparing to spend almost $200 to buy dirt (okay, fancy amended soil, but still, dirt) for my two new raised beds. Feels like an absurd thing to do, but the soil here is neglected and clayey and just generally no good for vegetables.

I’m interested in your amended dirt purchase. Mr. SP is currently making me some garden planters so I can have a raised bed. I need to fill it with something. I have some bags of mix especially for planters boxes, but I need a lot more. I don’t really know what to search for – should I just look for “amended soil”? Thanks for any ideas!

I’m ordering mine from a local soil company that delivers — I’m not sure where you are but they’re Soils Plus in Sonoma CA. You could probably search for something like “garden soil delivery” in your area. Or if you have a pickup truck that you don’t mind getting dirty, most places are happy to load you up rather than deliver. Our local company has a range of products and they recommend certain ones for raised beds; the one I’m getting is a soil blend with various organic nutrients added.

Isabella, I left you a comment on yesterday’s poll, but wanted to add that if you go look at the facebook page I sent you, you can use those instructions anyplace — for instance, there are detailed instructions for getting an appt at CVS, to name just one, and the procedure in CA is the same as here.

I have gotten appts for several people, and it is terribly time consuming but I have always managed within 3-4 days.

I’m wearing Messe de Minuit from PL67’s split. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with this one, since the online reviews are all over the place. I suspect from all the different reformulations. It’s a soft orange spice ball, with some slight soapy-ness. Quite well blended and much cozier than I would have expected. I like it!

I have absolutely no idea. I might even go back to medicine, not because I particularly want to but because it is way more lucrative than being a freelance translator which seems the most likely other option. It’s the second day of Spring Break for me, and I’m supposed to be: 1) getting caught up on my grading; and 2) writing a huge report that I’ve been putting off for months. I feel like doing neither, so I’m procrasti-posting about perfume, instead.

The sprayer is really not very good but the perfume is ebnjoyable. This evening I am in Visa which to me is a fruity chypre not the woody Amber of Fragrantica.

There will be ice cream for dessert.

I’m in Tocca Brigitte, which is tied with Stella as my favorite from them. Why did they discontinue it?! It’s a musky tropical fruity floral with saffron. I have probably one more wearing left in my decant. If anyone has an unloved bottle or decant, let me know. I’d love to swap for it. I did locate a bottle on a Canadian retailer’s website, so I may end up going that route.

Thank goodness the sun is shining today and it should be warming up. I need to get out for a walk after work. I was too tired after work yesterday that I decided it was better to get in bed under the covers instead. ? At least it gave me more reading time, so I was able to finish the book I was reading, The Strange Bird by Jeff Vandermeer. Next up is Jane Harper’s The Dry.

Ugh, I hear you! I temporarily got over my hatred/fear of getting poked when I was pregnant and having to have blood drawn constantly, but now the hatred/fear has crept back. The only saving grace is that the phlebotomists in the lab at my clinic are really jovial and always have fairly loud rock & roll playing on the stereo.

Thanks for all of the well-wishes on the move situation yesterday! Just to clarify, I am not surprised by this at all. California was never a long-term, forever home for us. It was short-term for him to work on one program. And it’s beautiful here for SURE and I’ve enjoyed playing tourist for a couple of years but don’t mind moving on. 🙂 Since my son is grown, we just look at this as an opportunity to try and live new places to see where we’d like to settle eventually. I do think we will be in Colorado longer than California for sure though. It’s nice we can both stay with the same company this time. He will be in a different department but my boss has actually asked me to stay with the team and telecommute the next year or so, which I am happy to do.

    Late to the party ?

SOTD = Guerlain Shalimar Philtre de Parfum EDP
