Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, late March 2021

Posted by Robin on 27 March 2021 208 Comments

Saturday is International Whisk(e)y Day, World Theatre Day and Sarah Vaughan's birthday. We're marking all the dates, and saying Rest in Peace to Elsa Peretti, Larry McMurtry and Beverly Cleary, with our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, your favorite fragrance to wear while sipping a nice single malt, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

I loved Beverley Cleary’s books when I was a girl. May she RIP.

I’m wearing the sillage-monster Profumum Acqua e Zucchero, the fancy version of Pink Sugar. 🙂

Someone mentioned they had the Profumum Patchouli and wanted to sell/swap/split it. If you see this post, let me know as I’d be interested in a split. 🙂

    Happy weekend everyone.
Going into Daylight Saving Time tonight so I might feel slightly sleep deprived tomorrow I guess but hey, it will be brighter outside for longer!

I’m wearing Lye by Gabriella Chieffo. The brand doesn’t seem to be getting much love and it not widely spoken about.

Can’t believe Easter is only a week from now but it will be just like in 2020 – without celebrations or family gatherings, only the closest relatives you live with.

Apparently my work bonus from last year is coming soon. What should I treat myself to?

I almost emptied the vial I got from Celine at Esxence in 2019. I’ve been saving it to keep me going for longer.

On the other hand I’m also thinking of Memo Argentina or Italian Leather.

No one guessed the name of my perfume yesterday, it was Ambre Loup.

Iris Torréfié for the farmers market. I like this one a lot but it fades to nothing too fast. I want more more MORE!

Tonight (inch allah) my husband and I are going out for our first dinner alone in over a year. I am thinking Shalimar Madagascar or should I stick with Iris Torrefie? I am wearing a green dress and mauve high heels.

We are going to a wedding in two weeks (the couple are being careful, everyone will be masked, my husband and I are now. fully vaccinated, we have our GP’s blessing, can get there in our own car, and will leave the reception early if things get wild) — which is to say that I am SO THERE with you on getting dressed up. Do I still know how to walk in heels?

Have a lovely night out! Hope the meal is delicious, but perhaps it won’t even matter.

I put on boots w chunky 2.5” heels the other day, and I was seriously “whoah!” Actual heels will be dicey. Just before lockdown I bought the absolute cutest platform sandals—which now look like elevator shoes to me? I have never worn them. They are actually much cuter in real life https://www.nordstrom.com/s/tory-burch-miranda-espadrille-platform-wedge-sandal-women/5546188

Just got back from meeting a friend for coffee and pistachio croissant to eat in the park by the river. So beautiful out! Spritzed on Fiori di Capri. Which I will likely spray in again after I shower. Then am meeting an old friend who I haven’t seen during this last COVID year.

    My fridge is sparkling!

We’re on the same wavelength for cleaning. I spent yesterday spring cleaning the kitchen. Sparkly refrigerator, clean and organized freezer. All cupboards, pantry and drawers were emptied, wiped down and reorganized. I found a very scary can of 6 yr old clam chowder!! I hate clam chowder so I can only assume hubster bought it and never consumed. Yuck.
Today I’m wearing a spritz of Seville Orange Blossom, but I’m finding it too sweet for today and just not in the mood.

I love a sparkling fridge! I did my freezer a few weeks ago and took out the huge basket that holds all the food (it’s a fridge on top model) and couldn’t get it back in.? I got so frustrated I ended up putting the basket in a corner of the kitchen for a couple weeks and then tried again and voila, it went right in. I have no idea what I did different but I don’t think I’ll ever take it out again!

I couldn’t get here much this week, but mostly I’ve been wearing my Eris Mx. sample with a couple of days spent with my new Nez bottle.

Here’s my brief review of the new Nez fragrance, Ambre a Levres. It’s interesting that they chose to put amber in the name–I don’t really get what I would call amber. Behind the scenes: I panicked and bought a bottle (small size, great price, no samples, etc) and then panicked and wished I hadn’t (it’s not really my type of fragrance); but now it has arrived and I like it very much. To my nose: It begins with an aldehydic iris with sort of a clean shampoo vibe, and I would probably have been disappointed if it stayed there. But then it deepens over time into a lipstick fragrance (iris, rose, violet) with a vanilla/tonka ending (but the iris and suede keep it from going too sweet). The suede note is subtle, but I prefer no out and out leather. It lasts a long time and smelled wonderful on my shirt the next day. I’m not a huge heliotrope fan either, so I was a bit worried about that note, but all was well.

Heliotrope listed in the notes worries me, too. It can sometimes tip over into Play-doh territory, a smell I can’t abide. Glad to hear it worked out so well for you!

I blind bought it too and love it. I get very little leather as well which is also fine w/ me. 🙂 it had a nice progression on me with the different notes too…not linear which I enjoy.

Handing out Enabler Badges here! SP, your report of panicked buy/panicked regret of buy/happy with buy is singing my song. So, with the extra She-ra stamp of approval, I bought. But I love lipstick and am a huge heliotrope fan…..plus got free shipping with code “NST” and tossed a couple samples in the basket. Will report back when I have tested. No SotD today, really; trying several things….

I’m wearing Hue, by Hayley Kiyoko. It’s a bright, very cheerful fruity floral. I like it — it’s uplifting, and I can use all the extra buoyancy I can get these days. From the website, it’s got notes of: blood orange, watermelon and freesia, peony petals, lychee, rose, pink magnolia, and cacao blanc.

We have good news that PROBABLY I will be able to go visit Mom in the flesh, in her room, late this coming week! I’m very excited for her and for me, but just hope that this next phase of opening things up more won’t go wrong somehow after their hard work of keeping residents protected out there.

    Wearing SL Daim Blond.

Another gorgeous sunny day in the 60’s! Woke up very early, had my coffee with a toast and fig/cocoa spread and went out to run some errands. The magnolias are almost in full bloom and crocuses and daffodils are everywhere making my walks more cheerful and colorful!

All packages for the splits of Iris de Syracuse and Messe de Minuit are on the way already. I responded to all of you who contacted me via email showing interest in the splits, but I didn’t get an answer from some of you. I am not sure if my emails landed in the spam folder, please check, but the package will reach you, regardless. I am sending tracking numbers in a few.

I will spend the rest of the weekend cleaning, organizing things at home and getting some rest.

In Twilly today, making another trial run through the Hermès minis that Sephora sent me by mistake last year. It’s okay on me, but I’m not interested in purchasing. Of the four minis in this set, Rhubarbe Ecarlate is the only one I like — and I doubt I will ever buy it. I think that, even though I bought a Jardin last year (Sur le Toit), the only Hermès that I out-and-out LOVE is Hiris.

I loved Elsa Peretti’s bone cuffs. I remember seeing them in a magazine ad when I was a youngish teen, and then just a couple of years later, my cousin — a first cousin once removed who was only a few months younger than me, but always the petite, pretty, worldly one — showed up wearing one at a family gathering. It was a silver one and I think a gift to her from her mom (my cousin), but I recall being shocked that someone my age could receive such an extravagant gift. I wonder if she still has it (it’s been 30+ years).

I wanted to re-read all the Ramona books when Cleary turned 100, and I didn’t. I will now.

It’s the perfect day for Tam Dao, doing laundry, finishing a paper and getting my @$$ kicked in scrabble for the third time this week. My daughter has beat me twice this week, each time by more than a hundred points. I just cannot win and my husband asked me why I keep subjecting myself to the humiliation, lol. Because it’s fun! Hey, who knows, maybe one of these time I’ll actually win…who am I kidding, I’m never gonna win.?

Did you buy your furniture at your local mega-grocery store? Asking, because our Kroger today had for sale three or four attractive, by NO means inexpensive types of patio sets along the sidewalk leading up to the store. $900.00 and up for a sectional or a glass-top table and chairs – I just wondered why that seemed odd to me – perhaps they were popular brands that people who had been looking around would recognize as a good deal?! Enjoy your BBQ; I am “opening” our porch tomorrow but we will have BBQ from our wonderful local Jamaican Food Truck.

I am a big fan of Elsa Peretti line of jewelry for Tiffany’s esp those in production in the early 2000’s. I thought the silver pieces were amazing but y big beef with silver – you have to clean it and polish it all the time!!!! However the designs (at least to my untrained eye) were beautiful, fluid and timeless (albeit pricey!!!)

I was surprised but how much I liked it. It is very addictive. When sprayed on hair and/or clothing it sticks around for 24 hrs. Dry down of Tonka, woods and praline is super addictive and comforting. It is reminiscent of very sweet cognac – and I think this is why it works for me, because I find general smell of pure unsweetened cognac revolting. Def FB worthy and I am thinking of doing a split!!

Will be wearing vintage Coco later, after a shower. A windstorm knocked out a big section of our backyard fence Thursday night, right on top of our truck, and blew out a couple of old windows on our back porch. Mostly cleaned up now and the truck damage is minimal thank goodness, but still a shock, plus I’m undergoing a change in medication that’s making me feel like I have the flu. Sniffle. Yes, I’d love some cheese with my whine but I got my cholesterol checked this week too, lol!

Oh I am glad it was not worse, ringthing! We had a big wind like that here. I heard the house creaking and settling as blasts went up under the soffits, I guess. But today when I did my yardwork, there were almost no branches or any sign of it. Passing you a “nice bit of gorgonzola,” as Wallace would say.

I am wearing and enjoying Tiger’s Nest and have an amusing scenario for you concerning my multi faith family. A child in my grandson’s pre-school class tested positive for Covid so he and his family have to quarantine for the next 10 days. That family is Jewish and Christian. Because they can’t go to the store, my other daughter and her husband have had to shop for their Passover seder meal. This daughter and her husband are Hindu and Christian. They now have a few funny stories of my son-in-law Niraj and their grocer Achmed diligently trying to put together the grocery basket.

Love it – I’ve described it as and still do as walking through a forest after overnight rain.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CM7tO1fhwHC/?igshid=sl84d2y8ctzc

Family Zoom went well and not bringing up politics definitely kept it going. We have our next one scheduled for May 1st!

Masks – if you can’t get your hands on legit N95s, a good alternative is KF94. I bought packages from a Korean store. I will use one next week. My brother also showed us an “ear saver” which is an adjustable band you loop around the back of your head with each end hooked to an ear loop. Indeed, it stretches the ear loop so it doesn’t cause the loop to squash your ear. I need to buy a few of these, especially when I have to wear masks when I eventually commute into the city again (date TBD but it is a coming this year).

Hope everyone is having a good weekend! I have many packages ? to open – fun!

We had a fairly industrious day today. Some very ripe bananas were calling, so the hubster and I made dog biscuits and jacked up bananas bread with black rum instead of bourbon. It was fine. When baking with booze, it’s hard to go wrong, really! Erm, only the bread has booze in it, not the dog biscuits. ?

I found out yesterday that I will need surgery on the finger I broke a couple of weeks ago. I’m not pleased, but what’s a gal to do? I’ve had the first part of the vaccine, so I feel a bit better about the situation. Hopefully will happen this week.

I’ve been experimenting with an Eneke sample set I ordered in 2015? 2016? I have no clue. After My Own Heart has a lot of lilac in it; it’s grassy, too. I’ve tried En Passant, and have come to the conclusion that lilac doesn’t work for me, and that’s okay!

( I said it anyway, lol)

Oh, you’re very kind! I’m tempted, but I just ordered the Nez bottle from LS, so that will do it for me.

Actually, with all of the humans you have to deal with, I think you should get a reward bottle!

Ouch about your finger. I hope it’s outpatient and you’ll be good as new in no time (well, after therapy).

I hope it goes well. As you know I had hand surgery in December after my freak accident cat bite on my thumb. I did about two months of physical therapy and am glad I did as it really helped and was actually kind of fun. With hands, they call it occupational therapy. I worked with two different people and both were excellent (if you need any recommendations, but my place is probably too far from you). They have a lot of creative activities you do and it was more varied than my repetitive PT for the hip surgeries. I assume you’ll have some too and wish you the best of luck.

Thanks, Calypso! I will have OT for sure. It will start a couple of weeks after the follow up appointment. It’s cool that you had fun with your OT experience. That probably means, as you said, your therapists were very good at what they do.

Work is still crazy busy. Yesterday a lady got in my face about the fitting rooms still being closed. I just said do you want to be in a box trying on clothes with a bunch of naked people? Lol. I heard Old Navy opened theirs up. I’m dreading when we do, because we don’t have enough people to watch it. Yesterday I wore Allure edp and today I’m going in wearing Tendre Poison. I love this perfume so much. It’s not over the top, and perfect for spring.

We do take returns. The main problem I think is we won’t be able to clean and sanitize after every customer.

I do too. It’s the only version I’ve tried. I’d like to sample the eau Sensuelle eventually.

After all the talk yesterday about cleaning, I got distracted from repotting plants and cleared all the extraneous junk out of the laundry room (it had become our “junk room”), and then organized all my painting supplies (house, not art). Doing laundry this morning in a blissfully clean laundry room while wearing Memoirs of a Trespasser.

I hope everyone is having a nice weekend.
SOTD is Do Son. It may be sacrilege but much prefer it to Carnal Flower. It has a pure clear green spicy fresh quality that I love. I never thought that I would enjoy tuberose scent so much.

I recently sampled Chanel Boy. The opening lavendar note is beautiful. I can’t decide if I want to own it. Any thoughts?

I prefer Do Son also. CF has a little too much menthol for my taste.

I am doing an incense week.
Starting with Liquides Imaginaires Sancti. Sample thunk! I enjoyed a lot while it lasted.

Super rainy day! Pouring like crazy! Feeling lazy about engaging in home chores, but I cannot keep postponing them. I need more coffee and think I will be ready to start.

    Happy Sunday! ?

I was a bit uncertain when I sprayed from the bottle as there was a bitter green note that I found disconcerting, but now that it’s dried down I am liking it.

Wore Courtesan while I vacuumed this morning. Off work until Thursday and have my 1st Covid shot on Tuesday. Thinking of wearing no 5 Eau Premiere today. Also Thinking of getting the Eau Premiere travel set but haven’t made a decision yet. My bottle of Coromandel came of Friday but haven’t opened the bottle yet.

Eau d’Italie “Sienne l’hiver” – for a “cold”, overcast day in Malaga. It’s actually 17C, which would have my brother in Dublin in shorts, but I guess we are acclimatised :^D
