Wednesday scent of the day 2/24

Posted by Robin on 24 February 2021 258 Comments

It's Hump Day and Pink Shirt Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

We're actually expecting the temperature to go over 50...I am celebrating with Aftelier Candide.

Reminder: 2/26 is Levi Strauss Day. Along with Jacob Davis, Strauss invented and patented the riveted blue jean. Do what you like with the theme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Over 40 here, and sun this morning. My ice-stuffed gutters are drip, drip, dripping. You smell jasminey & cheerful, Robin!
L’eau d’Hiver here, seems appropriate for a thaw.

Good morning all, my SOTD will be from yesterday evening – vintage Chanel No. 22 Eau de Cologne. Beautiful white flowers and incense. Such a lovely bed time scent.
Plumbing issues at the new apartment, so no early walk until the plumber is finished.

Oh, and I registered my hubby and myself for the Covid vaccine. It turns out both he and I, because of the industries we work in and our health conditions, are higher up in the tiers than we originally thought. He is an essential worker who had heart surgery last year and I work in education and am immune-compromised. Keeping fingers crossed that we’ll be notified soon, we’ll see. 🙂

You smell fabulous! I’m a little bummed the EdTs were discontinued and EdPs in their place.
I actually like the (more) current EdT of No. 22, it’s fizzy, joyful and quite lyrical. I also adore the vintage; meditative and quiet – the arrangement of white flowers over a delicate incense base is heart breakingly beautiful and ethereal.

Well, our plumber and his assistant seemed pretty nice, got the work done quickly. He was fine with letting Smokey run around while he was doing the repairs (he likes cats) until he saw how big SmokeyToes is….

Serge Lutens Feminité du Bois. I know the name was meant to reassure women that a wood-heavy scent didn’t have to be masculine, but jeez, it really is butch, all that cedar — there are other things but they get lost among all the wood, like a corsage in a pencil factory. It’s so great.

Oh how I adore Feminité du Bois. I get a little plum, bees wax and dusty spices from the Shiseido version.
But you’re right, it is decidedly pencil shavings at first. I remember seeing the ladies who lunch crowd shopping at Dillard’s (EL’s Beautiful was the top seller), sniff the Feminité du Bois – the looks on their faces was priceless……

There are absolutely other elements, some of that stewed fruit that made it into all the Lutenses for years and years, but mostly for me it’s a big wallop of cedar, done exactly right — I had a little bottle of Atlas cedar oil that didn’t smell as much like freshly sawn cedarwood as this stuff does.

Oh dear, I’ve been up since 4:30 and I just realized that I’ve been unconsciously thinking it’s Friday all morning. Time to recalibrate…

I’m in Chanel No. 22 largely because it was front-and-center in my perfume cabinet (okay, closet) and I couldn’t really remember what it smelled like or why I’d indulged in such a large decant a while back. Waiting for the aldehydes to calm down so that I can properly smell what’s in there.

Thank goodness! I don’t know what was going on and what prevented me from accessing NST yesterday and today until a while ago but hopefully the problem is now solved.

Well… Happy Birthday to me! Turning 31 today. Last 12 months were challenging to me, mostly due to covid, but there were many good changes too – like losing over 20 kgs of weight. Today I can celebrate and hope that the future holds a lot of good things for me and less covid misery for the world.

In case anyone wanted to see this birthday boy, here I am:

I love iced coffee and always order it vs. regular when out. I like coffee on the hotter side which, of course, is tough to always get/maintain from coffee shops/cafes but they can’t mess up iced. 😉 And yay for finishing your taxes!

Good morning all! I’m in Lime Basil& Mandarin plus Red Roses. This is a recommended layering, but I like Lime Basil on its own better.

I thunked some things over the last couple of weeks! LL Labdanum 18 rollerball, Fresh Cream Soft Suede 15ml mini and Byredo Bibliotheque candle. I was really hoarding that candle. It was probably 7-8 years old.

Well, it was a 7.5ml, so smaller than most, and I only wore it as a bedtime scent. Best guess is a year…? I forgot about it for awhile, but used it when I put it front and center on the nightstand. Next up: Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights travel spray. ?

Yep.. I don’t really see the layering either. The scents are fairly different from each other and not that complementary. With the exception of the sea salt one? That’s mostly a marketing trick I think ?

House twins! I’m in Pomegranate Noir and Mimosa & Cardamom, but on separate wrists, not layered, as I work my way through all of my samples. They are both nice, but I don’t find either exciting. I understand why some people love pomegranate noir, but I find that I don’t like lots of red fruit in my frags. (Which of course is contradicted by love of Pulp, but that is an EXCITING frag). Even for Christmas scents, I much prefer orange & clove or evergreens over pomegranates or cranberries.

It is finally warmish here and melting the snow off my roof. A giant chunk whooshed off in front of my window while I was on a Zoom and I jumped from surprise. I must have looked like I a saw a ghost!

Celebrating with a pot of 2nd flush darjeeling from Clipper Ship.

Hey, I forget about layering on separate spots! I had Mimosa & Cardamom and swapped it away, then experienced swap regret. I have a couple of samples; I’m sure that will be enough.
I’m glad it’s warming up for you! I don’t think I’ll ever be enthralled with snow again. ?

That’s understandable. We got enough of it in NJ for it to be an annoying nuisance that I will complain about, but you guys suffered a full-on snow assault — orders of magnitude more disruptive — so, yeah, you’re being less than enthralled with snow is understandable. Generous, even. Hope things are getting back to normal.

    Good morning everyone!

It’s above freezing AND temporarily sunny – started the morning with a double dose of spring to channel this unexpected bounty! SotD started with Ostara but I find it a very gentle scent, and wanted some more oomph to power me up, so I added some Song of Aubrac overtop.

Oatmeal and coffee consumed, and then many many many hours of Zoom await me although the first, thankfully, is a stretching class.

I have to go look at decking samples today – getting ready to hire someone to re-do our back deck (it’s falling to pieces rapidly, and the snow/ice we had recently did NOT do it any favors) and need to know what to tell them to order (they not being mind-readers and all that).

It was much cooler today and I actually went out for an appointment so I wore an ‘adult scent’, Violaceum. This is probably my best blind buy (found it well discounted). I like the name because it makes me think of lacy violence in violet, or something!

Question: is the aging of a perfume accelerated once one opens it – or spritzes it – for the first time? Would hoarding it until once finishes something else preserve it for longer?

Yes, the more air that enters the bottle when it’s sprayed, the quicker it oxidizes. Especially when bottles get below 50%, you should use it up quickly.

I have not been doing this for long and do worry about my perfumes going off so keep the bottles boxed in a cupboard. But then look at buyers of Shalimar bottles that have aged for 50 years and feel slightly more reassured… I wonder if some perfumes take time better than others?

Do you have very aged perfume that is still ok or some that has really gone off?

I have a now-vintage bottle of Ivoire de Balmain that I brought back in the late 1980’s. It still smells great to me. I’ve kept in inside its box and away from light and heat for all these years.

Definitely some perfumes are more stable than others. All the ones I’ve had go off were modern perfumes, purchased in the last 20-25 years.

I’ve been wearing perfume for my whole life and have had maybe 2 bottles go off. I keep them on a shelf, out of sunlight. I have had more decants go off in short time or evaporate. I did have a original Ma Griffe that was in perfect condition until I broke the seal. It evaporated very quickly, but smelled fabulous. Also, a few years ago during a heatwave, I threw a bottle out because of association. 3 days of outside heat later, I changed my mind and retrieved it. It was fine! Lol.

Lovely and sunny here, and wearing a pink vest that just arrived (I was lusting after a particular Patagonia colorway called “Century Pink”).
I watched that perfume documentary last night (“Nose”) – spent the $6 and all. Here’s my review, if you’re curious: It is very pretty, lots of shots of flowers being harvested and some glamour shots, too. Some interesting info (mostly related to the flowers being processed). Not a lot about the actual scent creation at all – it really stays in the fields/distillation site. But for $6, I give it two nostrils up and my husband was not totally bored watching either. Super annoying: the subtitles cover the titles, so every time you see a new person, you don’t really learn who that is. And the titles (not the subtitles) are white and mostly tiny on a mostly pale screen – perhaps legible in the movie theater, but not on a home TV.
Must see TV? Nope? Beautiful and overall somewhat interesting? Yup.

I looked up this “century pink” color and it’s so pretty! Almost like a rose gold, or bronzey pink. Thanks for the review of the Nose. I think I’ll pass for now, waiting for it to be available for free, if that ever happens!

I’m in Vetiver Oriental since it was quite cool this morning. But it’s since gotten much warmer and very sunny.

Our high reached 78 degrees yesterday, which resulted in a sweaty walk for me in the afternoon. I know everyone is awaiting spring, but I’m already fearing a sweaty, smoky summer!

Just a little COVID vaccine info. In my state, most of us have signed up in three different portals. Let’s be frank, states do not have the software existing to implement a vaccine effort of this size efficiently. Enter CDC VAMS. I received an email to sign up for yet another portal. I was not going to but after cursing and eye rolling, I did and yes, today, not even a week later, I received my first vaccine! So if you receive an email from this system, do it and skip the insurance page, it is not required! I was in and out in an hour and a half, 15 minutes was waiting to make sure you did not have any adverse side effects. I wore Chris Rusak Relief today, it was an accurate and enjoyable reflection of mood!

I took a half-day off today; weather is warm and sunny, and I got some garden work done. I have two new raised beds for vegetables and the wood needed to be treated with some preservative, so I got that done. Waring Nirvana Amethyst today, it works well on a day like today, which is spring-like but not yet really spring.

    Today’s pink shirt: https://www.nooworks.com/collections/womens-tees/products/turtleneck-long-cat-pink

And SOTD is the last of one of my small decants of En Voyage Zelda. I love this stuff and definitely plan to buy a bottle once ny remaining decant is finished.

Oh, and today my boyfriend and I have our 15th anniversary! We both kind of forgot until yesterday do there are no big plans, but we’d like to get fancy dinner take out this weekend. And I think I’ll pick up a special dessert at the grocery after work.

Hi everyone! I’m wearing Pacifica Tahitian Gardenia today because it feels like spring may be on its way after all. We might still get some more snow and cold in the next few weeks, but it won’t last as long. I finally took my car out to go grocery shopping today, after not driving it for almost two weeks–I was hoping the weather would warm up and melt the mountain of snow it was under so I wouldn’t have to dig it out, and it finally did!

I got my vaccine! It was through my hospital. The entire process was incredibly well organized by a vast phalanx of staff, beginning from when some guys flagged me right through the garage and into a parking space, and at every step afterward. In and out in 45 minutes, including the 15 spent in the waiting area after the jab. So far no Sudetenland effects!
I’m wearing Tom Ford Noir, a very pleasant medium heavy scent. I selected it by a blind draw from a bowl of samples—literally blind since I didn’t have my glasses on!

Hello, lovely and nice-smelling people! Still nothing much to report on the fragrance front on my part, except that I’m still using the Fresh deep hydrating rose face cream on my hands and arms. The skin on my face doesn’t really get dry. The skin on my hands, though, that gets very dry. I like the fragrance of this even better than cocoa butter lotion. LOL! I like rose scents in general, and find the Fresh rose face cream to be a very pleasant scent. 😀

I need to check here more often to see what event or food or cause is going on or being celebrated for the day. I was mad at myself for missing the “Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast” day. That kind of day is something I could have done very easily. LOL!

I was happy that it was a warmer day today. I was able to get out and get some errands done, and then I went to my favorite Indian grocery. 🙂 I stocked up on the lychee and mango drinks I like. I got plain yogurt so I can try to make raita. I experimented with a plain naan when I got home, putting olive oil, garlic salt, rosemary, dill and thyme on it and heating it up for half a minute. That was pretty good.

I have a decent collection of herbs and spices. It’s all dried herbs over the winter, but hopefully the sage and thyme and such will come back this spring. The containers that I have herbs in are currently covered with a couple of feet of snow, but snow is a good insulation for the kinds of plants I left outside for the winter.

Some of theIris reticulata bulbs that I got a few months earlier than I planned for and stuck in random pots that I had indoors are starting to sprout. The flowers are supposed to smell like violets. I will report back if or when they blossom.

The crinum bulb that I got in Spring 2016 and promptly lost in the house, then found this winter, was not only still alive, but has leaves over two feet long now. Also, the bulb seems to be pulling itself deeper into the pot by the roots. It’s the kind of crinum that’s known as a “milk-and-wine lily.”

I’d potted up a couple of kinds of lilies that don’t need — and don’t want — to be chilled in the winter. The Easter lily I got at a local grocery store in April of 2020 or so, and repotted in the fall, sprouted again in the winter and the stem is a couple of feet tall now. The growth pattern of that isn’t as scary as that of the crinum. I was aware that the lily bulb was alive, and I’m more familiar with true lilies than with crinums and such. 😀

Well, it was a report on my indoor “gardening” rather than perfume, but savory herbs like that are used to make “Guerlainade.” And of course there are iris and lily sorts of perfumes. lol

The sage that I have outside is practically unkillable. So I think odds are pretty good that yours will return.
