Monday scent of the day 2/15

Posted by Robin on 15 February 2021 300 Comments

Monday, plus a whole slew of holidays: Hippo Day, Singles Awareness Day, Presidents Day, National Flag of Canada Day, Susan B Anthony Day, ENIAC Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Sarah Jessica Parker Splash SJP oops no that's STASH, because MossyBerry brought it up yesterday.

Reminder: on 2/19, we're doing the Picture Challenge, edition 6. Wear a perfume that matches the picture, which is The Girl by the Window by Edvard Munch, 1893. More reading here; larger copy of the image here.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Good morning and Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr! It’s rainy cold gray here, but at least it’s not sleeting or snowing here…..

Doing the almond powdery thing in Guerlain L’Instant Magic. Good stuff! Dries down to a nice soft cozy dealio….

Omg, JadainGA – – someone else who loves that?! I used an entire large bottle in my mid-30’s, then got another in 2018 as I started my perfume hobby & wanted to revisit all the lovelies from my past. This is not meant as an insult, but rather a compliment: It kind of smells like supuh-high-end Love’s Baby Soft to me. (And yes, I drenched myself in LBS as a teenager, as did my sister, lmao…) I find it an extremely sexy scent, as well as cashmere-cozy. It’s different from its parent-scent, which I also find warm & comforting.

Oh wow! I TOTALLY get the Love’s Baby Soft vibe too! It really is great stuff. Full bottle worthy for sure! When my decant runs out I may have to invest in a FB! 🙂

I got mine on fragrancex back in 2018 (50 ml bee bottle for ~$40). I just checked and they’re out. I avoid fragrancenet, but just checked there and they’re out too. The Guerlain website is still selling a 100 ml bottle for not too steep a price:
          https://www.guerlain.com/uk/en-uk/p/linstant-magic-eau-de-parfum-P013314.html
Although it may have been reformulated between 2007 when I first got it and 2018 when repurchased, it smells exactly the same to me. Anise is listed in the top notes and I don’t know anyone who hates anise (including licorice/pernod/ouzo/sambvcca) more than me, but I don’t smell it at all in L’Instant Magic. I definitely smelled it in Guerlain’s Apres L’ondee, which is why I gave my bottle away after 2 sprays.

Shalimar Philtre de Perfume today. Philtre is recognisably Shalimar, but Shalimar in tilt-shift. The opening is a sherbet blast of bright, zesty citrus and iris, almost but not quite rooty. The petrolic quality of regular Shalimar is there, but it’s pushed right back into the distance. As the citrus fades the rose and jasmine come into hazy focus and the vanilla appears for a really lovely creamy effect. The drydown is gorgeous, as the ever strengthening vanilla is joined by a chocolatey patchouli for a more gourmand take on Shalimar’s base. However, it’s never cloying or overpowering because Philtre is rather demure and quiet. Right now I love it more than the EDT version of Shalimar, but not as much as the EDP or EDC.

In more exciting news, after a 4 week wait (and frankly I’d given up on it ever arriving), my bottle of Passage d’Enfer Extreme turned up this morning!

Longevity is good, I’ve had it on for a good 7 hours now and it’s still going strong, but it is quieter than regular Shalimar. It’s one you can overspray without gassing everyone in your vicinity!

You smell wonderful and Lush solids are really nice. Simon Constantine left Lush and started his own fragrance brand called and, with a little circle over the a, in England, of course, so he currently cannot ship any of the new line in liquid form but he can ship the solids that come in a little tagua nut complete with cap. The initial roll out is Mad(vanilla), Bare(cedar), Frank(frankincense), Bean(tonka), and Sand(sandalwood). Now the good part. Everything is sustainably sourced and profits from the line actually go back to the small farms that produce the ingredients. Essentially, Simon has cut out the middleman and gone right to the source building partnerships with farmers and actually helping with the replanting of single source and endangered plants. I ordered Frank and Sand and not only are the solids luxuriously textured, they melt readily into your skin, they are both interesting riffs on materials you think you already know. Frank is definitely lemony, fresh not church. Sand is Australian sandalwood with mimosa and vetiver and has some lovely banana facets. I am eager for someone to carry this line in the United States. P.S. The seal on the tagua nut is no joke. My husband had to place the little thing in the vise grip and gently encourage the lid off, wiggling it side to side. I have Sikkim Girls(jasmine) in solid and it would mashup beautifully with either of these.

In a tiny spritz of Nomenclature Shi_So to wake up and then Tauer Rose Delight Body Oil post shower.

Very sleepy today. On my first cup of coffee and still in bed. Need to set up my new cell phone that arrived earlier this morning after it slipped from my hand last week when outside and the screen broke into million pieces. Not that I needed a new phone, but there was no option.
Planning on doing some minor cleaning and then relax for the rest of the day.

    Happy Monday! ?

Thank you, Floragal. I also drop my phone continuously, but this is the first time that it was so bad. I slipped on the street thanks to black ice on the sidewalk and the phone flew from my hands and crashed in an insanely way. I hope winter is over soon!

Better for the phone to smash into smithereens than you! I say that as someone who took a tumble in 2015 and broke my shoulder. Had to sleep in a medical lift chair (aka The Barcalounger) in my dining room for months, and work from home once I was off the painkillers (as quickly as possible). Silver lining: that’s when I started blogging, and really reading blogs like this one. Stay safe!

My library is closed today and tomorrow, so I’m at home in my comfy clothes and wearing a comfy scent, Alkemia Hex. For some reason I like a perfume oil on a cold day. Southeast Texas goes crazy on a snowy, icy day. We just aren’t used to this weather. At the end of this week we are supposed to be back up into the 70s.

First, thanks to everyone for the condolences & support when I posted about my aunt passing last week. Very much appreciated. I made it to the services, really no problem at all, despite the unnerving forecasts.

Scent: started out with ElizabethW Sweet Tea, but it fades fast. I’m working with a very pretty rollerball (really, it’s a pleasure), so maybe I should just keep on rollin’.

Tea: English Breakfast, maybe Twinings? At any rate, a bit tasteless. Turns out the stuff from Upton or Harney is worth the time & effort.

I am already too perfumed today to re-test what the difference between them is! Will try to follow up, but there is some difference, and at about $20 for 30mls of the edt, or maybe even better, I am *glad* to have both. The edt bottle is so pretty with that bee and rose design, not that the looks outdo the scent, BTW.

SotD Jorum Studio Phloem. Phloem is my go-to “wake up and get motivated” scent, it’s got a pungent cacaphony that inevitably hits me like an espresso shot.

Still negotiating with the production for which I’ve been offered a role. The pay has gone up but with insufficient guarantees, so we’re not quite there yet… Crossing my fingers. My industry is both hit hard by the pandemic *and* entirely un-unionized and unregulated as far as pay and work conditions go, so self-advocating is critical.

In happy news, my new pillows are ready for pickup! That was far shorter than 6-8 weeks, woohoo!

Good luck with the negotiations! I feel like companies are using the pandemic and the widespread un/underemployment to make lowball offers. I had an initial phone screening for a job a few days ago, and they asked what salary range I was looking for. As soon as I said, they tried to bring the number down! Ridiculous.

Yeah – it’s a weird situation where it’s a stunt I wouldn’t normally perform, but they couldn’t bring their international team in due to COVID, so there was a lot of back and forth in the regional market to try to establish what we felt were acceptable rates for the work.

For sure their initial number was a lowball offer, but thankfully they’ve at least been amenable to negotiating.

Tauer LADDM today…one of the handful of samples from my travel bag.

Packing up to leave our long weekend hideaway and head for the ferries. My kid is eating leftover chocolate cake for breakfast to get rid of it. Things you only do on vacation!

It sleeted all night on the real Mongolian yurt that is the bedroom here, which was very cozy to listen to. Amazing that it stayed pretty warm even in -7C temperatures the other night (with a couple of space heaters, of course).

Happy Monday! Robin–do you mean ‘Stash’ not Splash? Although I kind of like the name Splash.

I’m in PG Bois Blond because Sistine mentioned it the other day. I should be happy because today is a day off, but it’s gray and cold and I’m still stuck in my house. However, I truly am grateful that it is a nice warm house with plenty of food (and perfume). Maybe I’ll actually just sit and read a book for a while. I rarely get to do that.

Wearing DSH Inner Sanctum with dabs of American Beauty besides. I wanted a deep rose that still has some sparkle and this is a great combination.
We’re in the cold, heavy snow part of this storm which this area is used to, though it’s been a while since we’ve had a real winter like this. My husband and I were discussing why being snowed in pleasurable while being in quarantine is not, even with the reality of digging out of a foot of snow. Sheer fear factor?

I think because being snowed in has the connotations of being cozy, an excuse to drink more hot chocolate, and is known to be temporary. Whereas quarantine has the connotation of scarcity and worry, doesn’t necessarily end, and that’s hard for our brains to deal with, plus the chances of actually getting sick, which is no fun, and possibly fatal.

Plus, you know the snow will be all sparkly once the clouds are gone, and help amplify the sunshine so that winter doesn’t seem quite so bleak.

Hello everyone, wearing Volutes in the EdT concentration, as I have been for the past 3 days. I think Sycomore is a good cold (20 degree) scent, and Volutes is a good slightly warmer (30 degree) scent. Really hitting that February point where I just crave warm enough weather to bask in all my light citrus/floral/green scents again…

Good morning everyone, my SOTD is White Tea by Perfectly Scentsable (formerly Remedy NorthWest, formerly Body Time of Berkeley). For folks who want a longer-lasting, less expensive version of Au the Blanc by Bvlgari, this fits the bill nicely. 🙂
I was released from UCSF, had a bad bout of pancreatitis and an infection, elevated WBC, and fever. This visit really took it out of me.
Home sipping tea and resting, I have Smokey slippers, apparently he missed me! 😀
    Everyone have a good day!

I laughed at the various names of Perfectly Scentsable. In fact, I remember when it was Body Shop, before Body Time. They changed names when the UK company Body Shop expanded into the U.S.

It seems ATB was reformulated a few years ago, it has a decided barber shop note that wasn’t there previously. I have an older bottle and did a side by side comparison with the perfume oil from Perfectly Scentsible, they are identical. And the oil lasts for hours.

Beginning my exploration of Les Exclusifs today with Bois Des Iles, from a very generous NST’er. I was surprised to find it a little shy with me. It is very cold and dry here, so that may be why. It started to bloom as I got moving on some inside work, but when I did a little snow shoveling, it did not waft out from inside my coat, which surprised me. My first impression is: love. We keep getting the Winter Storm Warning, but just as our corner of the county often misses the rains in the summer, we keep missing the big snows in the winter. Just a scant 2″ of powder so far. At 18F snow does tend to be powdery! 🙂

She had an accident right before the blood peeing incident, she tried to jump from the couch to the coffee table and missed, slamming her belly against the table. Vet thinks she ruptured a blood vessel in her bladder. Crossing fingers it doesn’t form a clot that blocks the ureter.

Yesterday I wore The Body Shop’s White Musk Libertine, which I thought was a nice, pretty, and light scent for Valentine’s Day, and some idiot at work apparently thought it was too much because everytime I passed by him he’d make a big show of flapping his hands around and acting like he was suffocating or something. It was getting reeeealy annoying, and I wanted to snap at him to grow up and stop being a jerk or something like that, but there were too many people around, and that along with my natural inclination towards non-confrontation kept me from going off. He isn’t even an employee, he’s just a friend of the manager who visits once in a while. In hindsight, I should’ve said, “if you don’t like it, then leave”. Sigh. I hate jerks. But I kinda needed to vent and knew you folks of all people Get It.

Apparently tomorrow we can say goodbye to the freeze-wave that was with us for 2 weeks now. I can use a break from my warmest jacket.

Wearing Dusita Moonlight in Chiangmai which maybe partially fits the picture. I’ll think of something better soon.

Sycomore. For some odd reason, I’m smelling rooty iris. Does it have that? Trying to get in the groove for work – it’s a holiday, technically, but on my schedule, it really isn’t. Still, I feel less guilty for taking it a bit leisurely!

I don’t get rooty iris from it, but I do get quite a lot of vetiver. I wonder if the rootiness is coming from that? Or your skin might just amp up the iris…

Unintentionally wearing Gain ack! I was in a rush when I dropped off my laundry at the laundromat last week, so I didn’t tell them to skip the fabric softener. Gosh, are people actually wafting this all around me and I never noticed? It’s absolutely ginormous! So now I don’t know if I’ll re-test Moonlight in Chiangmai, The Dark Knight and Tyger, Tyger today as I had planned. I’ve made a pact with myself that if I like something I’m sampling, I’m not allowed to put it into a re-test pile where it will languish for an eternity. Perhaps changing my clothes will help, although that smell seems to be everywhere …
Hope everyone is having a peaceful day…

Oh no, that scent is so much! My hubby bought Gain in-wash laundry scent boost awhile ago on purpose (as if Gain needed that).

He used it when he did laundry (towels and sheets); the scent coming off the sheets was waaay too much. I asked him to never use that again; it’s just suffocating!

More snow here. It’s Mini Monday and I picked a mainstream – Modern Muse Nuit. I have minis of many of the “old school” Estée Lauder perfumes and vastly prefer them. Overdose of vanilla for this flanker. At least it’s a spray….

I blind bought a bottle of that from Ebay at the end of last year and am still deciding if I like it. I get quite a bit of flowers from it w/ the heliotrope and jasmine. I’d call it a floriental whereas Fragrantica classifies it as a woody oriental. Lots of reviews mention the vanilla but I get more flowers than vanilla…have to wear it again as sometimes impressions change with multiple wearings…especially when you compulsively pour over reviews before trying it yourself. Ahem. Cough. As I did. 😉

Hey, that’s a good idea for using minis, mini Mondays! I have a lot of minis too. Some of them are hard to open, so when I’m in a rush in the morning I go for something I can spray instead. So I like the idea of having a day dedicated to minis.

I’m in Adam Levine, which is really quite nice. Needs respraying, though, as it quickly becomes close to the skin. I need to wear this more often.

UPS delivered all our signed and notarized docs to the title company today…the ones that were supposed to arrive Thursday in advance of closing. Even though they recorded Friday as transfer date, it’s nice to get it reconfirmed.

I thought buying a new home was a big deal, but then I spoke with friends on Sunday. They’re adopting three siblings ranging in age from teenager to first grader. THAT’S a big deal.

    President’s Day!

    1) Am partially dug out- I ran out of melter salt and had to walk the 1/2 mile to the hardware store and back, uphill, in the snow! 🙂

1a) But seriously, freezing ice came down and compacted the snow, and I nearly landed on my caboose a couple of times getting supplies. This past year I forgot to stock up on emergency supplies the way I usually do in summer, so lesson learned!

1b) Power went out and so I had a cold house for a few hours- but power – and furnace!- are back! Hot water! Soup simmering on my Star Trek stovetop! Luxury!

1c) My love to those in the SE and Texas going through this winter storm!

    2) SOTD: The Body Shop Gardenia body butter after a gratefully warm shower, and a couple of spritzes of TF Noir.

Lillyjo, you were right the first time – it’s not the immortelle flower, in fact. It’s a very realistic, fresh white peach blossom (not syrupy-sweet), iris, rose, blackberry, & tonka bean in a perfect blend. There’s supposedly a carrot seed note, which I can’t smell at all (and the iris is more floral, not root-y nor carrot-y). It’s ravishing, albeit very light. I can get away with wearing this to work.

I’m wearing Unknown by Unknown because I sprayed from an unlabeled sample sprayer this morning. It’s a kind of funky skunky rose and I’m really wondering what on earth it is. Hmmm. We have SNOW SNOW SNOW today and it’s sticking because it is only 17 degrees outside. Coldest weather in Houston for 130 years, they’re saying on TV. Luckily I have power and water. Many friends do not. I put out extra bird seed and have been keeping the doves very very well fed all day. Right now I’m sitting here in a sweater and hat and scarf with a blanket and cat on my lap. My heat is on but can’t get things above 64 degrees. Tonight will be worse…. I’m feeling worried for the homeless people and animals out there. One of my cats always wants to go outside but even he is sticking to a bed indoors for now. Might make some gumbo tonight if the stove keeps working.

A few years ago, Duke Energy did a major clean up along the power lines in our area and even our neighborhood, and we’ve had few problems since then. So, here’s hoping! We have a flock of what I think are first year bluebirds at our suet feeder. They are so pretty. I am watching to be sure I keep it full. A giant red squirrel also has found it, and the birds are second fiddle to him.

I chose Floris Honey Oud to go on top of remnants of last night’s Anne Pliska. I’m close to thunking this decant and did thunk my Anne Pliska spray sample last night. I still have an even older small decant of Anne Pliska, but I may need to go for a bottle once that’s all gone. I wore it in the evening three or four times recently, and it works beautifully at night.

My part of Seattle ended up with about 9 or 10 inches of snow yesterday morning, which is the most we’ve had since I moved here 8 years ago. We got to watch lots of people sledding down the hill we live on over the weekend. There was even a snowboarder and a skier! But it’s been raining or sleeting on and off since yesterday afternoon, so the snow is melting at a good pace. I’m enjoying my holiday off work sitting on the couch watching GBBO while my boyfriend does some WFH beside me.

Honey Oud became cloying, so I sprayed some 5 O’Clock au Gingembre on top of it. It’s definitely helping.

It is STILL SNOWING here. I shoveled twice yesterday and once today, and I’ll need to do it again soon. Also still very cold, but I’ve been cuddled up under my electric blanket with the puppy so I’m good.

No scent because I haven’t showered yet, but I’ve been burning my orange flower candle from Nicolet Candle, which is lovely. I hope everyone is managing to stay safe and warm!

Chicago. We’ve had an incredible amount of snow this February, and it’s still coming down. We had hardly any before this month–it’s all come in the last two weeks!

Yay for ENIAC day! It was no problem shutting my computer down for one minute in honor of the day, as our power went out again at 2 am. At noon Mr. G decided we would decamp to a motel, for the heat and internet connection (and, in all probability, if I know Mr. G, television), and we have just finished checking in. I wasn’t actually in favor of this, but I have to admit that this is far more comfortable than home was this morning. And he packed some Jameson’s for me, and my pillow, which was very sweet.

Busy day today! But now I am waiting for the incoming rain. It might be freezing rain, and it might be just regular cold winter rain. The forecasters aren’t quite sure about that.

Both the cats are camped out on the heat vents, and couldn’t care less about the outside conditions.

I used to live in a house with a big O’Keefe and Merritt gas stove that had a built-in griddle with a pilot light under it, and my cat slept on the griddle in the winter. It was adorable — just had to give it a good scrub before making pancakes!

We warmed back up to hear normal temperature so it’s back to snowing!

Ended up washing down the kitchen cabinet doors after doing a few dishes this morning, I must have been really bored ?. It sure will be nice to get back to “normal” one day.

I hear you on the “boredom tasks”! I decided that today was the day to clean all the mirrors in the bathrooms. Doing it reminded me why I go so long in between cleaning them. Streaky mirrors look nearly as bad as dirty ones…

Hello hello! I’m in PDN Patchouli Intense, from a discovery set. Mmmm, spicy and nice.
We lost power last night about 11pm, but got it back today about 3pm. Pipes okay so far. It will be colder tonight, so we shall see. The snow is so pretty, but I honestly just want it to go away at this point! I’m a winter wimp.

Take care, all of you out there dealing with the cold weather!

Well, posting so very late that I already have a glass of wine in my hand and three quarters of you are probably already asleep! Wearing some rather old Imogen Rose after a big furniture-rearranging-and-consequent-cleaning adventure. When I first got this, it was too baby-powdery for me, but that note seems to have waned in the several (ten?) years since I bought it, and now it’s just an extremely pretty, pink-smelling, rosewatery rose and I’m loving it.

I’ve had so much to do lately, I keep having to post late. I’m waiting on about 6 inches of snow. I know we had a relatively easy winter until February, but I just want it to go away! I’m thinking of all my Texas and NW and NE and Midwest friends! I’m not sure how the South is doing, but hope all are well!
I wore Tobacco Vanille today, so I smelled great!????

No snow here, just tons of cold rain. We had a day off from house renovation workers, which was nice. I’m so grateful for all the work getting done, but it’s very loud, especially when I’m working. Today isn’t an automatic day off in my workplace, you have to take it as a personal day. And honestly, now that my kids aren’t young enough to need supervision, and it’s cold and rainy, and I’m working from home anyway, why bother? I’ll have some time off this week when my youngest has his wisdom teeth out. Wish us luck! SOTE is Laura Mercier’s Ambre Vanille, a very comforting bedtime-type scent.
