Friday scent of the day 2/12

Posted by Robin on 12 February 2021 206 Comments

Happy Friday and Happy (Lunar) New Year! (Also, Darwin Day and Lincoln’s birthday, plus RIP Chick Corea.) Our community project for today: welcome the Year of the (Metal) Ox by wearing a fragrance that represents diligence, dependability, loyalty, honesty and hard work.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

Diligence, dependability, loyalty, honesty and hard work: right away I thought of Prada Infusion d'Iris (not the Absolue, even though I do prefer it — that's too luxurious for the ox.)

Reminder: on 2/19, we're doing the Picture Challenge, edition 6. Wear a perfume that matches the picture, which is The Girl by the Window by Edvard Munch, 1893. More reading here; larger copy of the image here.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is from Prada's Lunar New Year campaign 2021.

Good morning and Happy FriYAY and Happy Lunar New Year!

For the Friday challenge I went with my dependable, much loved Chanel No 5 Eau Premiere. It always works. It’s one of the very first perfumes I ever bought for myself when I first starting really getting into perfume, and I love it as much today and I did then….

I am not at all sure that this fits the brief, but I’m in Serge Lutens Santal Blanc, which has always seemed marvellously austere to me, a sort of shoulders-back chest-out spine-straight fragrance. It’s very complex but it has an admirable forthrightness that I love. It’s one of my top-five Lutenses for sure.

My bottle is from 2008, and I see that the scent has been moved to the Eaux de Politesse collection and is variously described as crystalline and aquatic, which could not be further removed from what I have, so clearly it’s been reformulated, possibly even to the point of being an entirely different scent under the same name. Just a warning to anyone who might want to try it.

I tried it in Saks a year or so ago, and the sandalwood went to dill pickle juice on my skin. It was so sad. The bottles in that collection are quite beautiful, though.

That does make me sad. It used to be something momentous and wonderful. This is why it’s so hard to recommend scents nowadays if you have anything that’s more than a few years old: you don’t know what a new bottle might smell like. “Why does he like this so much? It smells like a deli!”

Some talk about a cumin note in it and I think my skin brought it out cos the soft slightly sweet creamy effect was always dominated by a jarring dirty note I couldn’t place…

Shalimar today. Talk about hard working and dependable! I was going to wear Coco, but it’s too romantic. Not to deny the romance of Shalimar but it’s a perfume I wear for myself and often in large amounts, it never fails to make me feel better. Happy Friday everyone! ?

I haven’t tried this line but was thinking I liked the name. Google defines Gallivant as to ‘go around from one place to another in the pursuit of pleasure or entertainment.’
It then gives this example “she quit her job to go gallivanting around the globe”

Such a brilliant idea for a line of perfumes!

    Good morning!

I haven’t had anything really to report perfume-wise. Sometimes I smell like cocoa butter, and sometimes I smell like other moisturizers, but I haven’t really gotten fine fragrance experimentation in there lately.

The Fresh Deep Hydrating Rose Face Cream has instead become a deep-hydrating hand cream for me on several nights recently. I tried it on my face and it felt a little greasy to me. The skin of my face is apparently not dry that way. Slightly greasy moisturizer on my hands is a good thing, though. And I’ve been using the C.O. Bigelow Rose Salve on my lips now and then, depending whether that or a stick of Chapstick is closer to me.

I don’t think I’ll be going out or experimenting with fragrances today. Old Spice would be what I’d think of for solid and dependable. 🙂 Dad registered it as a floral when I wore it a year or two ago. I thought about whether it would be okay to broaden the “Ox” category to “domesticated bovine” in general. In which case I could go for Demeter Condensed Milk as a bovine product. (lol)

I also thought about trying a fragrance with “cuir” in the name, to give the leather association. 🙂 I’ve gone through many pairs of cowhide leather gardening gloves, and there’s a little bit of a scent I associate with new cowhide gloves.

I don’t think my folks could deal with a leather scent today, though. I’ll pretend that I’m wearing something solid and dependable today, and then maybe figure out a bedtime scent like that. 🙂

    Take care!

I’d considered a leather perfume for today, so we were on the same wavelength at one point!

ITA about that Fresh Deep Hydrating Rose Face Cream. I ended up using most of the deluxe sample I had on my hands, too. I usually don’t like scented lotion on my hands, but that worked just fine there.

I honestly forgot about todays theme, so I’m in Caleche which might actually suit the theme. As with other aldehydic florals of that era, due to reformulations they end up being a bit ‘masculine’.

I really couldn’t think of any Oxen* related perfumes. I decided to oppose the whole CP,, in honor of Ferdinand**, my favorite bull (a species I suspect is in closely related to oxen*). So I am wearing a fragrance to represent why he loved just being in his field, quietly smelling flowers: Le Temps de Fete. You might say that Ferdinand was anti-hard work, but really aren’t cows supposed to hang out in fields and graze? It was the humans who decided that they should work at bull fighting?

“I think I could turn and live with animals, they are so placid and self-contain’d,
I stand and look at them long and long.

They do not sweat and whine about their condition,
They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins,
They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God,
Not one is dissatisfied, not one is demented with the mania of owning things,
Not one kneels to another, nor to his kind that lived thousands of years ago,
Not one is respectable or unhappy over the whole earth.

So they show their relations to me and I accept them,
They bring me tokens of myself, they evince them plainly in their possession.

I wonder where they get those tokens,
Did I pass that way huge times ago and negligently drop them?
Myself moving forward then and now and forever,
Gathering and showing more always and with velocity,
Infinite and omnigenous, and the like of these among them,
Not too exclusive toward the reachers of my remembrancers,
Picking out here one that I love, and now go with him on brotherly terms.”
From Song of Myself by Walt Whitman.

    * Now, it suddenly occurs to me; :’Heurre Blue” in honor of Babe, the Blue Ox, but I’ve already sprayed Le Temps De Fete.
** The hero in Ferdinand the Bull by Munro Leaf-a children’s book about a bull who would rather smell the flowers in his pasture than become the bull in bull fights.

Started today in a little Dior Vetiver on the forearms (again) which is admittedly a bit too ‘luxe’ for an ox. I may be more on point now with SMN’s Vetiver on my shoulders. This one is deeper, earthier and more aromatic: it’s not a very popular vetiver but it is definitely one of my favourite.

Like cazaubon, I’m feeling somewhat abused this morning and in need of self-indulgence. Our winter storm arrived with quite the vengeance yesterday afternoon, bringing absolutely HOWLING winds along with two or three inches of snow (so far). Consequently, I may or may not have slept, so I’m forgoing CP points in favor of the soothing qualities of Paracelsus.

This is the second cold, rainy, and gray day in a row. I wasn’t even thinking when I grabbed my bottle of Hove Plage D’Ete. It smells “sunny and warm” to me. Coconut and citrus, along with some earthiness, which I think is in the base of most Hove scents, if not all of them.

For the CP I chose Tocca Colette. She was my signature scent in college days pre-rabbit hole, so we’ve been through a lot together…library all-nighters, breakups, ill-advised binge drinking. She still brings a smile to my face. If that’s not loyalty and hard work, I don’t know what is.

Shalimar, vintage Edc I got for a song on ebay (“rebottled”). It’s old, not much to look at, bottle wise, but came with the box (also nothing much to look at) and still smells great after what I think must be many decades. Plus – Shalimar!
    I expect many twins…. 🙂

I think you can find these kinds of things without crazy luck every so often – so there’s hope you’ll find a bottle, too! There’s couple on there now but they are not as great a deal. There is even lots of “regular” vintage Edc out there.

Shalimar Souffle Intense today and feeling overwhelmed a bit.

Greta the kitten had diarrhea last night and needed a bath. 🙁 It was really one loose episode so will see how she does today.

Also waiting for meds to treat a skin condition for Hans the kitten. I got it salmon flavored and have a dream I will mix the liquid into his wet food and he will eat it. ??;)

I am a Water Ox, so I will get my own year in 2033; for the Year of the Metal Ox, I thought of wearing something with a metallic sheen, like Hiram Green’s Lustre, but then I found another perfume in the same box, Dawn Spencer Hurlitz Bancha, and that is just perfect for today. It is a very grounding, calming and honest scent and I used to keep a bottle at work – well, it’s still there, sitting in my empty office as I have been working from home for months now – to keep me focused and calm when I felt really frazzled. It is such a lovely scent, deceptively simple but beautifully done. Since I’m macrobiotic, I have had a lot of twig tea over the years and I love its smell, but this perfume does not smell like twig tea smells, it smells like twig tea feels. One of my most favorite creations by DSH.

In the end I chose Annick Goutal’s Sables instead, given that it conjours up some sort of landscape of arid sun-baked stone that seems as if it will be there, unchanged by the elements, till the end of time – and maybe, if I smell it attentively, there might even some metallic hint in it!

Feeling a little achy and teary this morning. At 6:30, my oldest headed back to college in Rhode Island–and with the pandemic that just seems a million miles away. His little brother showed me the written instructions he left for me so I could use “Just Dance 2021” without him (the tv, wii, and all the other tech in our playroom is a complete mystery to me!) which made me laugh. Earlier this week, the hubs got a dx that is complicated and scary–and things just feel, well, I don’t know.

Anyway, accidentally or intuitively, I am filling the CP brief in Memo Irish Leather, which definitely relates to diligence, dependability, loyalty, honesty and hard work. Its an elegant, thick woolens out in a icy rain sort of perfume.

Happy Friday and Lunar New Year!

In ISM – It’s an ox in terms of dependability and loyalty in my collection and truly a reference iris among iris/orris fragrances.

It also matches the snowy scape outside – beautiful and fleeting.

Finally – ISM reminds me of Northwest artist Morris Graves’s 1955 painting “Minnow” and his powerful words –

“The minnow is that coming-in-to focus of a clue within a concentrated moment of awareness. Silvery minnow-moment, flash-gleaming in the depths, now seen, now gone…when crisis occurs the minnow voluntarily comes into view – to renew faith and give direction.”

I’m playing along with the CP today in Esteban Classic Chypre. Definitely a dependable, loyal, and hard-working fragrance for me. Honest, too – what you see in the name is what you get. This is a fragrance which works all-year-round, is always supportive, but never showy.
It seems that Esteban is not distributed very widely in the U.S. anymore, which is a shame, since they produced quite a few nice frags which were on all the discount sites when I bought this.

For the CP: Paco Rabanne Eau de Metal. A blind buy from a thrifting run some time ago. I thought it was a men’s cologne until I got home and did some research. But I never wore it until today. I am sure it’s an older 20ml bottle, and the first (decanted) spritz brought some dusty, slightly off citrus notes that are well known to this vintage perfume fan. But they faded and my much-loved smell of sweet flowers and oakmoss took over. It’s lasting quite well, too. I don’t actually notice anything metallic about it. Happy Friday all; I will have to catch up with comments later.

Doing some early research for a valentine scent.

On one arm: Guerlain Meteorites, the perfume equivalent of one of those drugstore, heart-shaped marshmallow thingies given as grade-school love tokens.

SOTD… what’s that? This afternoon, I am going to haul out my Smell Bent’s and spray them all to find out which ones get to stay on the island. I will be a cacophony of scent.

My cabinet clean-out project continues… it was the liquor cabinet’s turn today. Poured out some old-old stuff. And why did I have two full bottles of sambuca? Huh? And why two bottles of rum, which I confess I’ve looked at warily ever since a certain high school Rum Incident. Which was a loooooooong time ago, but some aversions stick with ya.

Sunny here today; will be rainy tomorrow. We are in an alternating pattern with each sunny day followed by a rainy day. Could be worse, we need the rain. Hope all of you experiencing winter weather stay safe and warm!

Reading about all the hideous winter weather, I feel positively guilty about our beautiful Saturday morning. However, I can offer some encouragement to the Northern Hemisphere folk – it’s there’s a slight autumn feel creeping in to the early morning already.
I’m repotting some indoor plants this morning, it’s well overdue, but essential now for all the poor plants that the cats have knocked out of their pots 🙂
After that, I’m thinking about a generous trial from my sample of Green Spell, the new Eris. I’ve tried only a dab so far, nice, but it faded very quickly.

I had figured I’d end up in Chanel today (wore 31RC and Cuir de Russie earlier in the week, and I have more Chanel than any other house), but reached for Memo Winter Palace, instead. I think it does not really fit the CP but seems appropriate for Lunar New Year in general. Wish I had that beautiful bottle!

Heading to a belated Candlemas bonfire tonight, fueled by our Christmas trees. We will be outdoors the whole time (including for dinner) and observing the local capacity cap of ten. It’s going to be COLD (air temp of 12F and who knows what the wind chill will be), so I cannot imagine that we will hold out very long. But it will be our first social event in three weeks, and the first non-Zoom social event in about five (all non-Zoom events have been outdoors).

Despite the temp, that sounds like a really fun event–have a blast!

My SOTD fragrance for the theme of “dependable, diligent, loyalty, honesty, hard work” was Lutens’ La Religieuse. I really had a hard time thinking of a fragrance to match that theme, the rest of you were so creative! But I had a sample of that one nearby, so when I noticed it, I thought, that will do fine! I know not everyone has positive associations with nuns, but I went to school for two years in Brussels that was run by nuns, when I was a little girl, and they were lovely — very kind and patient with us.

Wearing my oldest and most loyal stand by, Paris YSL. About five sprays of EDP. Most people are olphactorily challenged with masks so I just thought why not. It is wonderful and comforting and I love it just as much as I ever did.

I’m wearing AG Vanille Exquise for my Favorite Fridays. Of all of my 100ml bottles this one has seen the most love, starting with the early days of being somewhat vanilla obsessed.

We have snow on the ground in Seattle, and it is COLD so I had to go with one of my most dependable comfort scents, Ambra del Nepal by i Profumi di Firenze. It’s basically my perfect amber with cardamom, vanilla, and lightly smoky incense. Enjoying my vacation day though I’m not getting up to much more than sitting around relaxing and getting laundry done.

Wearing Jo Malone Lime Basil Mandarin for the CP because it is my most dependable fragrance. Whenever I’m not sure what to wear, this is what I go for.

Hi all! I’m wearing L’Eau de L’Artisan because it’s my dependable standby and I think I wore it more than anything else last year. And maybe the herbal grassy notes represent food for the ox.

I made whole wheat bread yesterday which I’m enjoying today (from this recipe: https://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2019/01/100-whole-wheat-sandwich-bread.html). It’s a workout for the food processor, but overall pretty easy–just takes time because of all the waiting between stages. I discovered that my whole wheat flour had a sell-by date of 2019, but I used it anyway. I live dangerously!

For today’s cp, I’ve taken the concept of the qualities of ‘diligence, dependability, loyalty, honesty and hard work’ as they relate to a fragrance in real time: For the past two weeks, we’ve had intense winter with alternating bouts of bitter temps + snow, back and forth, with no sign of any letup until late next week. What scent has the fortitude to work in this climate? My choice is one that’s a favorite of mine that I save exactly for such days/weeks, Caldwell Massey Pure Frost. Classic simplicity; it doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not. Its clean-lined blue-and-white bottle presents a straightforward and fresh fragrance that beautifully captures the scent of frost and the peace and beauty of new fallen snow yet simultaneously works hard to provide its wearer warmth and comfort from the cold. Notes listed are Casablanca lily, jasmine, vanilla, and bergamot, but there’s a bit of spice in there somewhere that gives it a distinctive twist that lingers during drydown. The soap and accompanying bath products are equally delightful and I’m glad I scooped them up while available.

Wishing everyone a wonderful Valentine’s Day weekend ahead – whether you celebrate it with someone you love, by yourself, or don’t celebrate it at all, I’d like to share a favorite poem of mine that I think especially suits the day. Remember to ❤️ yourself!

In the always spine-straightening Chanel No. 19.

In some ways, I think my Fiori di Capri would have suited better. It’s just so straightforward and honest.

Really not happy with the haircut I got most recently, I’m just biding my time in letting it grow out before I can have it completely reshaped.

Happy Lunar New Year, NST! ???

Hunkered down now, and waiting for the next winter storm which should be coming either in the wee hours of the night, or tomorrow morning. All of my outside-of-the-house errands and tasks have been taken care of earlier today, or they really weren’t pressing.

SOTD = AG Ambre Fetiche EdP. So glad I got the old version of the bottle for this one. I have truly enjoyed wearing this one for the past week. And not had the itch to interrupt my perfume monogamous streak. If that’s not loyalty, diligence and dependability, I don’t know what is. I figure that this and Pacifica’s Spanish Amber are my Top Amber Perfume picks.

Posting late and in a rush while making roasted tomato, burrata and basil pasta. I promise to come back and read the comments later!

I chose Earth Mother today. Why?
    1) Metals come from the Earth.
    2) The Earth mothers I know are some of the most solid and dependable people I’ve ever met. As long as you’re a plant.
    3) I can depend on it to smell amazing.

Is that Dame Perfumery Earth Mother? I ❤️ that one, too. I like to wear it in late winter or very early spring, when it’s still cold and the world is not yet green but I know that new life is beginning to stir below us.

I wore MFK Grand Soir today because it is strong and sturdy, and I can rely on it. Probably too sexy for an ox, but who cares? I know I smell powerful!
It’s cold and gray here and supposed to get colder. That’s unusual for us. I’m hunkering down. I have a big vat of vegetarian soup with kale, beans, and many veggies.
Suddenly this evening I got a text from my hospital group saying I’m eligible to get the vaccine, and I now have an appointment for Feb 24th! I filled out the form to apply lickety-split! This has brightened my day considerably! My attitude otherwise would be kind f bleak because, you know, Valentine’s Day puts a lot of bad pressure on us single people. I almost bought myself roses at the store today but they were ridiculously expensive!
