Wednesday scent of the day 2/10

Posted by Robin on 10 February 2021 212 Comments

It’s Hump Day and Umbrella Day. Birthdays: Boris Pasternak, Chick Webb, E. L. Konigsburg. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: day 3 with Uncle Serge, in La Fille de Berlin.

Reminder: on 2/12, welcome the Year of the (Metal) Ox! Wear a fragrance that represents diligence, dependability, loyalty, honesty and hard work.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown is the design for the 2021 Lunar New Year stamp from the US Postal Service. "Calling to mind the elaborately decorated masks used in the dragon or lion dances often performed during Lunar New Year parades, these 3-dimensional masks are a contemporary take on the long tradition of paper-cut folk art crafts... The star in the center of the ox’s head references the celestial themes of the Chinese zodiac. Art director Antonio Alcalá designed the stamp with original art by Camille Chew."

I am continuing with my Valentine’s week of rose perfumes I love, but barely reach for them. Today, I am wearing Robert Piguet Calypso, beautiful and comfy!

I got an update about the dove last night. Unfortunately, the injuries were so bad that she had to be euthanized. Even though I had hopes she would survive, I know the possibilities were few. As they told me, she was spared from a longer and greater suffering in the wild with an imminent death. So sad, but I am relieved I was able to help her.

On my second cup of coffee with few Turkish honey sesame cookies. Another cold, windy and gray day. Counting the days for Spring to arrive!
    Happy Wednesday! ?

So sorry your dove didn’t make it, but it’s still such a blessing that made sure she was looked after and the right decision made for her. Sending hugs.

Sorry about the dove. With pets and other rescued animals, it helps me to think that the sadness I feel when they are gone is a transfer of some of their suffering away from them and on to me. Painful as it can be, I’d rather carry that burden for them if I can.
If everyone who had seen the dove just walked on, no one would mourn her death, but she would have suffered in the wild. By taking her in, you formed a bond with her and thus mourn her, but gave her a more peaceful passing. (This is as spiritual as I get, btw, it’s just that my heart belongs to the all the critters.)

Thank you, Vee. I feel exactly the same you do about any type of animals. I am glad to see that I am not alone in that feeling. Last night, after reading the detailed report they emailed me, I was so overwhelmed, that I deeply cried for good 10-15 minutes. As sad as it was, it was also very comforting that she was not suffering anymore. I am in peace now and always ready to help again, if needed.

I’m in Galop today, which, since it always makes me think of Helen of Troy, is probably in complete opposition to this week’s CP theme! It’s too luscious for a day of grocery shopping and Zoom meetings, but what can one do? One must wear the perfumes…

To my nose it’s the scent of the most beautiful woman in the world — not to say I think it’s the most beautiful *perfume* in the world, but it’s so extravagantly, voluptuously, recklessly womanly. I’m a big rose fan, so that helps. 🙂 Whenever I wear it I feel like I’ve put on a sort of soft armor of improbable, irresistable attractiveness that’s enough to bring warriors and cities to their knees.

Goes great with chores. (eyeroll emoji).

In MFK APOM pour Femme today, golly, how this one suits cold weather. Not at all what I expected when I got the decant, but it works!

Managed to knock over my first coffee of the day and pour it all across the floor and myself, but thankfully didn’t burn myself or break the moka pot, so all’s well that ends well. A hint from the universe to do a load of laundry, I suppose!

Now laundry is done, English muffins are made again, and my second coffee is ready. May everyone’s Wednesdays be fixable ?

Good grief, I spilled my morning coffee too! All across the newspaper!? Ruined the paper, made a mess on my floor and made the first words out of my mouth for the day very bad ones.

But my SOTD is SL Amber Sultan, a power scent for me. So I wet swiffered the floor, throw the soggy news in the trash (most of the news belongs in the trash anyway) and made a new cup of coffee. I figure the day can only get better right?

When I first saw this poor girl I started to laugh, then thought, “Wait, what was she thinking?” Talk about user error. Read the label. It says GLUE, don’t get on skin.

If I made a mistake like this in my industry (tech) I would be told to RTFM (sorry for the language), then probably fired.

I hope it didn’t do permanent damage to her scalp. Also hope she can get a wig until the hair grows back.

Rose Infernale today! Not really on theme at all. I’ll have to think about what to wear for the CP this Friday. Hmm.

Today I begin treating myself with nice fabrics–I’m wearing a silk tank and cashmere sweater (and eagerly waiting for my cashmere sweats to arrive). My poor silk and cashmere garments have gotten no wear in almost a year, while I’ve been wearing cotton and synthetics at home. How silly. Clothes are meant to be worn!

All those “work clothes” and “party clothes” are taking up so much room in my closet and doing nothing at all. Do you think you might donate a lot of your work clothes, or just wait until you start going back to work in person and then resume wearing them?

By Kilian Amber Oud. Because it’s smooth and warm and lovely. This is one I feel hard for (and split the refill bottle due to expense), and I’ve never been sorry that I bought it. It’s interesting about the year of the Ox, I’m a Taurus and I think it shares some of the same qualities. I hope I do, too. I really value diligence, dependability and honesty in people.

Busy day today, spritzing on a sample of the current version of Kilian Love. There are rumours of reformulation/watering down so I’m testing it side by side with my old bottle, just out of curiosity.

It is the same smell, but less potent. Hard to say if it’s due to maceration in my old bottle or reformulation. For sure the liquid is a lighter colour.

Joining Robin in La Fille de Berlin today. I think this might count for CP, since many detect a metallic note in it! Hahahaha. I don’t detect it though.

Last night, I made this roasted feta/tomato pasta recipe that I heard about because it went viral and caused a feta shortage in Finland. I just had to try it after I heard about that. It turned out delicious and a huge hit, and seems very good for improvisation. I definitely want to try it again.

SOTD is Roja Sweetie Aoud. From a sample I got in a swap, of course, because they are absolutely out of their minds to be charging over $500 a bottle for this. Just lost in the ether. I don’t even dislike it, but I’m offended by the delusion that I’d pay that much for something that smells like I’m soaking up a puddle of oud oil with a loaf of bread. Who is this line for? Just youtube hypebeasts?

    Humpday!

    1) “I am ready to go on…I am not a cat.”- 2021

    2) SOTD: In my bargain steal Gucci Memoire d’une Odeur. Lovely almond-herbal scent- really lovely, light yet VERY cosy scent. The lovely slight bitterness that comes from the chamomile rounds this out. Perfect for WFH as of now; would be a great unisex scent for the office. A scent that I would actually pay full price for, no lie.

    3) Rest day – a walk and plenty of stretching. If you do Peleton, remember you *can* have an over use injury, so take breaks and STRETCH.

Work has been crazily busy, then we couldn’t find our cats last night. I was getting very worried, then one of our neighbours popped her head out the door to say she had a cat under her bed that wouldn’t come out. The bed was very low to the floor and I had to reach under and drag Phaedra out by the scruff off her neck. While I was doing that, Deuc had just sauntered home from somewhere. Much relief all round.
For no particular reason, I’ve decided on Thameen’s Amber Room today.

Inspired by the qualities of the Ox, I reached for my Beaufort London Come Hell or High Water collection of travel sprays that come in a handmade and altogether pleasing leather roll up case. This collection was inspired by the history of the British Navy and is also a really interesting meditation on birch tar as a perfume ingredient. Coeur de Noir, complete with Joseph Conrad quote, which I shall spare you, seems to reference the history of privateers, pirates with the permission of the queen or their nation’s government. Bergamot, lemon, black pepper, rum, ginger, ink, some leather woody and then that birch tar, incense, laudanum and a hint of vanilla! There is nothing sweet or gentle about this fragrance at all. These are not meek. If your desire is to smell like a pirate, look no further, wooden ship, gunpowder, rum and all!

These are really witty! I am getting little huffs of vanilla and tobacco right now, like my imaginary pirate is enjoying rum and a pipe smoke, still not sweet. The nuances unfurl slowly.

I heard tonight that the polar vortex might just stay in Canada. I’m still expecting a low of zero by morning. I might see 32 degrees by February 24th!

If that polar vortex stays up there, that’s fine by me!

BTW, re: shredders, I have one made by Royal. It can shred 12 pages of paper at once, or light cardboard. I think we got it at Costco or Staples.

Thanks for the recommendations! I was using the cheapie 3 page shredders, and they were not good at all.

Sad to say, but with shredders, you get what you pay for. Something to look for is a shredder with a “Reverse” setting, just in case something gets stuck.

I will gladly share the polar vortex that’s set up in my neck of the woods! ?

I think we have the same Royal shredder; it’s fantastic and can even go through old expired credit cards plus you don’t have to remove staples. I love it!

No staple removal? Now I have to get it.
No need to share the vortex.. you keep it, I INSIST ?

Yeah, it’s been awesome not having to cut up expired credit cards by hand. I can also vouch for it being able to destroy old software CDs.

No need to be so generous with the Polar Vortex! ?

Sotd is the glorious Dune. Dabbed from the cutest mini. Early tomorrow morning I have a important phone meeting with a random worker that will want to be mean to me. Since NST won’t be open for business until after my call, I’m asking anyone who’s still reading for good wishes and for a rare nice person to be on the other end of the line. I really need this stress to go away. I may or may not have stress bought a perfume, and still contemplating another. Lol.

TF Black Orchid Parfum travel spray. I tacked it on to my daughter’s Ulta Valentine’s order. It did get me quite a few gwp, so I’m concidering it perfume math free, lol.

Started day in Gabrielle Essence, then Eau de Shalimar after shower.

My skin has been uber-sensitive lately. It’s driving me nuts. I’m trying to just use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer. But I may need to try something new. And the puffiness under my eyes! Aging is a pain.

Yes, ITA re aging. And aging gracefully, wow, very difficult. Right there with you. But we smell amazing!!

I like the image for the stamp!

SOTD = Maitre Parfumeur Ambre Precieux EDP

One of the best ambers – powdery warm spicy and vanilla too! The bottle is tacky with a tacky jewel on top – like Roja before Roja Dove became known for his bottles ?.

You know I love a red bottle, but yeah… that’s a little tacky. It’s ok though, as long as you smell great!?

No. 19 because I was in a mood on Monday, Oha yesterday just because it’s lovely, and Shalimar today because Shalimar…no other reason necessary lol. It’s been a crazy week for sure. Hubs out of town again, crazy at work. I ordered a few tacos tonight from a local taco truck I’ve heard of a lot and good grief! Talk about delicious! Made up for the crazy week haha! Sadly, delicious food has that much power over me. 😉

That’s okay — it’s all the little things that add up to how the day went. Tacos sound great to me! and you smell gooood!
