Tuesday scent of the day 1/26

Posted by Robin on 26 January 2021 319 Comments

It's Tuesday and Peanut Brittle Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm not feeling great this morning and will possibly be going back to bed soon. If I felt better, and if I had any, I'd wear Angel Liqueur de Parfum. But since I don't, no points for me today.

Reminder: on 1/29, wear a fragrance by (Thierry) Mugler, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Ciel Bleu Porcelain tea set for 2 is hand painted with 24 carat gilding, and 20 sets were made. You can request a price quote at Ninaber van Eyben in the Netherlands.

That is some tea set Robin, did you request a price quote? 😉
    Vanille tea by MF

I do not have any Thierry Mugler perfumes so days of Annick Goutal.

SOTD is AG Vanille Exquise, I very much drawn into the feel of this fragrance today rather than the actual scent.

Had a horrible sleep last night, several pots of tea for today.

But AG Vanille Exquise is wonderful!

You can get the teapot in a case on a dedicated stand/table…that sorta convinced me it might be out of my price range 🙂

Hope you’re soon right as rain, Robin.
Tea today is Numi breakfast blend–need pep for what I suspect will be a couple of rounds of snow shoveling today.
Ordered samples of the newer Masques–trying Madeleine. Well done but will not require more.

It’s a nice gourmand–I do get the whipped cream/milky effect–but on me it was very linear (generally prefer florals).
It contains cumin, which doesn’t bother me, but I know some are quite sensitive to it.

Thanks! Cumin doesn’t typically bother me, luckily. I will still plan to sample all the new MM perfumes soon. I am hoping the US shops receive Ray-Flection soon. I think it was lucasai who posted about it in the last few days.

I recently tried Madeleine also. The chestnut note really came through for me (as did the milk/whipped cream). I agree, well done. Decided I don’t need to do chestnut ever again.

Though the x-rays look good/don’t show instability, my doctor wants me to wear the cervical collar another 4 weeks…I felt kind of devastated yesterday by this but I think w/ all the stress in my life and the world of late…it just kind of hit me hard. The original estimate was 6-8 weeks and I have had it for 4 and I was hopeful maybe I would get an early reprieve. But I shall press on with the help of my old friend…vanilla. 😉

Today I will be trying Fragonard Vanille which was my first purchase of 2021 and also a blind buy b/c that’s how I roll…will weigh in w/ thoughts later. This was a 2020 release.

I am also debating between the Coco Mademoiselle Intense travel spray (which I smelled a while ago but believe it has prominent vanilla and is so darn cute) and Heretic Dirty Vanilla now available at Nordstrom which I haven’t smelled yet b/c I have Notes burning a whole in my pocket. Please guide me on which to acquire. 😉

Also little Miss Greta continues to do well. I am getting better at doing her liquid antibiotics and eye drops too. Behold the power of modern medicine! 🙂

Hi She-ra: not that I would ever discourage *buying* perfume, but I’d be happy to send you a 10ml decant of CMI. I got 50mls when it first came out, and then one day soon after on Ebay I saw 100mls for about the same price and, well, perfume math that is a bargain. So I am swimming in it! 😀 Let me know at kclberry, dot net, of net scape-o! Tossing up another 5ml decant if anyone is interested.

Ditto on the Nemat Vanilla Musk. My husband got me a little bottle awhile back and it’s a straightforward comfort scent, not overly sweet. I love it for bedtime because the roll-on bottle dispenses just enough. Bummer about the C-collar, but better safe than sorry. I like Coco Mad Intense, but my husband doesn’t care for anything Coco Mad related. Haven’t smelled the Heretic.

Still Muglering it up in A*Men Ultra Zest, which is the original A*Men subdued by a bright candied orange and I think a bit of cinnamon. It’s really pleasant and sunshiny, with the too-muchness of the original tamped way down.

I’m wearing Lonestar Memories today, from an untouched sample. I think I’ve had this awhile, because, as with other Tauer samples, the liquid is quite viscous. I like it, but it isn’t love. I may try Lonsome Rider later this week, because the notes sound more my speed.

I have a feeling that today’s tea set is one of those with a price that falls into the “if you have to ask, you can’t afford it” category. SOTD is Paracelsus, and I still love it as much as I did on first wearing it – as Jalapeño says, “swoon!” In other news, I’m meeting with a deck contractor later this morning for a bid on much needed repairs to our back deck, my parents got their first round of vaccinations yesterday, and we have snow predicted for late afternoon/evening today. I hope you feel better soon, Robin, and hopefully whatever it is that a you’ve got is minor and short-lived.

I hope you feel better soon Robin! Head back to bed for some zzzzs.

My SOTD is Mugler’s Alien Essence Absolue – jasmine, orris, vanilla, incense, myrrh, white amber and cashmere wood. I love this quirky – ambery, resinous jasmine. I’m not normally a huge fan of jasmine but paired with resins, as with Samsara, it’s one of my favorites.

Woke up to the sound of coyotes yipping this morning, it was very cool! Officially counting down, moving in less than five days. Excited and nervous.

Not too long ago I was on a hike with my family in Point Reyes, at dusk–we could hear coyotes yipping, probably less than a mile away in the hills near us, but we couldn’t see them. We were sure they could see us, standing there gawping at all the racket!

We hear coyotes in our neighborhood yipping at least once a week in the middle of the night. See foxes a few times a year.

Last week we were having neighborhood cocktail hour (as one does a few times a week since the beginning of COVID), and a bobcat crossed the street about 75 yards away. It stopped, gave us a good stare, then continued on its way.

That is fabulous! Where do you live? We get foxes, but no coyotes or bobcats in our Oakland backyard (that backs up against an EBMUD easement/wooded area).

I’m in Marin. There’s a lot of wild forested areas in our neighborhood (our plot is nearly an acre, and basically all woods—no, I don’t own it, too poor for that), but we don’t abut any open space.

We’re maybe a mile from Mt. Tam and tons of other open space, but our bobcat would have had to cross some streets.

Of course we have tons of deer, too. One day I found a 3 point rack just sitting on the driveway next to my car.

Then there’s all the other wildlife I’m not as fond of: spiders and rats and squirrels (cute, but if they get in the attic, they give a ratty-vibe). I swear we are a spider farm.

Oh, and neighbors have tons of daytime coyote-spotting stories. I’ve not seen one.

Wow, a bobcat! I do love furry critters. Years ago, when I lived in SW Florida, I saw a FL panther while trail riding. It was one of the most amazing sights.
Shortly after, we saw wild hogs, which spooked our horses.
Florida has such astounding natural beauty, I really wish the local government agencies would invest in thoughtful wildlife preservation efforts.

No points for me all week, but I’m in Chergui today and loving it, so there’s that. I have to speak briefly in a large Zoom meeting today and when that’s over (I always get nervous), I will celebrate with coffee and a delicious homemade cookie. https://smittenkitchen.com/2017/12/salted-butter-chocolate-chunk-shortbread/

Twins! Kevin’s short shrift of new releases always inspires me to wear the “oldies but goodies”. I saw the Maison Crivelli line when I was in a perfume shop the last time, but focused on smelling all the Vilhelm perfumes that they had in travel spray form. None of those appealed to me either. Best of the bunch to my nose was Dear Polly – I thought it had a bit of leather, but never checked the note list.

That is an excellent cookie. I have a batch of the cookie dough for it sitting in rolls in my freezer, waiting to be sliced and baked for a friend’s birthday. Sometimes I dollop excess egg-and-sanding-sugar mixture on top of the cookie for an extra crunch.

I did most of my taxes yesterday but can’t file until 2/12. It’s always a relief to have them done. I’m wearing Maai (only one Mugler and I’m saving it for Friday) and waiting to see if the snow that is forecasted will actually arrive. Hoping it doesn’t turn out to be “wintry mix.”

Had my first Covid swab yesterday. My husband and I have steadfastly refused to get tested for minor complaints as we wear N95 masks as a rule and felt that to start testing unless really unwell was a slippery slope. We get free Covid tests as part of our hospitals’ covid policy and have seen colleagues go crazy. My ongoing nausea (now D6) finally tipped the scales but I tested thankfully and wonderfully negative. Hope you feel better soon, Robyn.

I’m wearing a mystery sample that I found on my dresser not labelled. Doesn’t matter, because it is pretty forgettable. I would like your opinion on something. I got a $100 LuckyScent gift certificate for Christmas. I am trying to decide between Xerjoff Lira and Love and Crime. Former is expensive and I would never buy it without the gift certificate. But the gift certificate would cover almost all of Love and Crime and I would still have to spend my own money on Lira to make up the difference. Which should I buy? I really like both.

Hope you are feeling better, Robin. For CP points, I am digging out my set of Mugler samples. Today I tried Supra Floral. It was very nice going on, but 5 or so hours in, I can barely smell it as a skin scent. I used about half of a 3ml sample spray – maybe it would bloom in the heat, which we certainly don’t have here today. Have a good Tuesday, everyone!

I still have about half the sample, so I will just return it to the hoard; maybe since we talked about it, I will remember to see if it is different in warm weather! Being a fan of big sillage, I seem to be impatient with perfumes that don’t sing out no matter what.

I’m in Mugler Amen Pure Shot. It’s Pure Soap on me, so I added some 4711 Lime & Nutmeg on top. I smell like fresh soap now, and I’m okay with that. Will entertain myself with other 4711’s in layers today. ?

I’m able to wear Mugler all week, which wouldn’t have been possible just a year ago. Thanks to swaps and freebies though (with special shout out to hajusuuri for a variety pack of Les Exceptions), I have plenty to choose from. Today I’m wearing Cuir Impertinent, which has a lovely and prominent anise note. I also appreciate how subdued it is in contrast to yesterday’s Angel Muse.

AM = 3 small sprays, lasts most of the day (I refreshed with one small spray to each arm early evening just because)
CI = 4 small sprays to each arm and 3 to the neck

Yes, that is indeed the one that I have! I I previously used the UnCalender by PeopleSystems for many years- and I makes a great bullet journal for just about anything. But I have two specific goals that I need to work towards in March, and so decided to give Best Self a try. I just started using Best Self at the beginning of January- but I have noticed the abbreviated time and focus on my two specific goals to be already helpful on staying on track .

I only have two Mugler scents so will save them for later in the week.

Mitsouko EdP today. I’m drawn to something appropriate for a cold day. I was commando yesterday. We made a decision on Sunday to rent a car and drive out to a storage space we have in the Poconos to do an inventory check in advance of a purge. I wanted to do it in advance of bad weather expected. So, was on the road early and forgot about any scent.

SotD Zoologist Musk Deer. This is the “perfect” weather for it – feels like -9°C and about to get a solid few centimeters of snow.

I’ve got 4lbs of pulled pork cooking in the oven for this week, and coleslaw made.

I have to say, having Mr. Teebear working from home has its benefits. I went to train while the pork was cooking for 3 hours, which I would never feel comfortable doing otherwise in case of some sort of oven-related emergency. I won’t even step out of the house while the dryer is running normally!

In Taif, and I have to say, I had no clue whatsoever regarding the multitudes of Mugler scents out there! Luckily, not tempted for now! 🙂
I spent hours working on a class assignment over the weekend, and moaning and whining about it….then I figured it out, felt all proud and perhaps a bit smug even at my monumental achievement, but decided to check into the professor’s office hours regardless just in case…and found out I had done the whole assignment wrong and will need to do it over.
I think every time I have the “smugs” coming on from now on, I’ll be extra cautious! 🙂

In something that is supposed to have ambergris (or fake ambergris)–a “solid” perfume my mum picked up in Japan. Weirdly, I am not picking up on any ambergris–but instead chypre–sort of like a very prettily scented Vaseline. My plan is to use it up quickly.

Robin, I’m sorry to hear that you aren’t feeling well today. I hope whatever it is passes quickly!

Today’s alarm clock was played by a cat getting ready to throw up in the bedroom. Thankfully, it was at a reasonable hour, and on a hard surface, so cleanup was minimally annoying.

Today’s yucky weather sure took its time showing up… it didn’t arrive until late this morning. Almost all of it is/was rain. Maybe a brief burst of sleet around lunchtime. Not a single snowflake to be seen. ☔?

SOTD = Aedes de Venustas Grenadille d’Afrique EdP again today. I needed a “Get it done!” perfume for today.

Yes, waking to the sound of the cat vomiting takes me back. But you are right…reasonable hour and hard surface make all the difference.

Neither new kitten has vomited to my knowledge yet…eventually they will of course. Maybe b/c kittens don’t shed fur until they get a little older and once they get furballs it will probably commence. 😉

What I didn’t mention above was that I quickly moved the cat to a hard surface before things got messy.

I did notice that as my current cats grew up, their coats got much more plush and thicker. So you could be on the right track about hairballs. Hopefully you won’t be dealing with a lot of them!

We got snow and then the wintry mix. I was out there around 5:30 and swept away wet and snowy stuff.

I was well below the snow/ice/wintry mix line all day. Kinda thankful for that.

BTW, the tuna poke bowl was a delicious lunch! Spicy, too! ?

Stayed up late finishing the new Graceling Realm book by Kristin Cashore, Winterkeep, complete with mind reading foxes and dirigibles and purple manatees, it was really wonderful. In a bit of Angel Muse today, a really lovely gourmand. I squirted 3 test strips with my final selections from the strangelove coffret I received for Christmas. meltmyheart is really the most credible chocolate and oud perfume I have ever smelled. And not sweet but dusty and savory. lostinflowers is equally lovely with jasmine, champaca, gardenia, saffron and oud. silencethesea is like nothing else in perfumery, you can smell the sea and the shells and that seaweed that has been in the sun a little too long. It is incredibly evocative, perhaps not entirely wearable. These are very spendy, you can get a deal at Net-a-Porter occasionally or at the strangelove website. I think the ingredients are top notch and the line really reflects the many moods of oud in the not the usual ways.

Hi all, checking in on the late side again. Saw my hand surgeon late this afternoon and he said everything looks great and I don’t need to go back. He complimented me on my rehab work! Yay! I celebrated by treating myself to some pretty earrings (the huge medical complex has a really nice jewelry shop in it). Previous surgery follow-ups have also entailed such celebrations!
So, I got my Zoologist box yesterday and it included a nice personal note from Victor, as always, and a lot of samples, yay, including Snowy Owl, which I have been very eager to try! I put some on last night and tried it again today, both times with pretty lavish sprays. I’m sorry to report that I find it disappointing. The initial mint phase is very nice and striking but it only lasts 15 minutes, and then things go into a very juicy green phase, kind of like Elephant, that I don’t really much like, and doesn’t seem consistent with the vibe. After another hour it almost just disappears on me! I have to go close and sniff in really hard to get much of anything–faint whiffs of coconut, musk, something floral. Reviewers on Fragrantica complain of the calone but I don’t even notice any. I’m just not getting the spring snowy scenes or dark forest. Oh well.
Tomorrow I’ll see my hand therapist again–I have about 5 more visits–and I’m taking her a loaf of bread I made last Saturday. (I froze it, and hope that won’t ruin it.) I wanted to let her know that I’m really happy I can manipulate my thumb and fingers again!
Robin, please take good care of yourself, and get better soon!

    Hello, folks!

Hope you’re feeling better soon, Robin, and that you were able to get some rest!

I think that would be the definition of an “if you have to ask, you can’t afford it” teapot. LOL! I have enjoyed looking at some of the floral-patterned teapot pictures you put up sometimes, and some of the interesting earthenware or patterned porcelain ones.

I’m looking for a simple teakettle that doesn’t whistle. I can hear if the water is boiling, and whistling sounds like that bother me. Something in the $20 to $25 range is about my speed. lol! If the crowd here comes up with ideas, let me know. 🙂 Thanks!

Yesterday Mom and I headed out west to the super-Walmart in Parkesburg. I’m sure irisjasmine knows where that is. 🙂 It was a very productive trip. That Walmart has lots of items our smaller local Walmart doesn’t have. Plus we stopped at Arby’s to pick up a late lunch. That’s the kind of thing that’s exciting to Mom and me, especially when I pointed out that they had reubens on the menu.

Of course I was exhausted when we got home, and I’d done bad, bad things to my back with various lifting and carrying that day and the day before. Advil and a long nap helped. And I put on Nicolai Fig-Tea, which I find soothing. I had no idea this was Mugler week. I have assorted samples around.

I’m still not with the community project program today, either. But I got my box of items from LUSH today, and had a good time experimenting. I liked the fragrances of the things I got, so that’s good. 🙂 I washed my hair with “Fairly Traded Honey” shampoo, and used “Honey I Washed the Kids” shower gel. I thought both were quite nice. Also, my hair is very nice and soft.

I got “Ro’s Argan Naked Body Conditioner.” When I looked at it, I realized that “Naked” meant that it wasn’t in a pot, just in plastic wrap. I found a “Don’t Forget Cake!” plastic jar that I had washed out and kept with the idea of putting stuff in it sometime. (lol!) The conditioner fit well in that jar. I got a small amount of “Charity Pot Naked Body Lotion,” but that will probably be okay just in its plastic wrap. If not, I have lots of small containers.

I got the solid perfumes “American Cream” and “1000 Kisses Deep.” The one I’m trying right now is “American Cream.” I like it quite a lot. I haven’t tried putting the other on my wrists yet, but it smells nice in its little jar. For some reason I keep going for the fragrances I think will be soothing. Go figure. 🙂

    Have a good evening! 🙂

Ah, so we were both busy yesterday! I wish I had a teapot rec for you, but when I make tea, I just put water in the microwave. I know that is probably tea heresy.

Whatever is most convenient, I think. That’s likely heresy also. lol! I’m sure I’d think differently if I were trying to make tea in a ceremonial way, but I go for the utilitarian approach with tasks more often than not. 🙂 A lot of things I think are safer for me to do in the microwave than on a stove. Melting cheese or butter work better for me in the microwave. I do feel like I can manage boiling water better if I have it in a pot on the stove than if I microwave water in a Pyrex measuring cup, for instance. Anyway…

I tried Dirty as a wash card on a day that my folks were out of town. (lol) I was like, “Wow, that’s strong and memorable.” I have another couple of wash cards to try sometime. Lush suggested that the wash cards could be used to wash hands in public, like if you have access to a sink but there’s no soap dispenser there. It’s an idea. I suppose as long as someone wasn’t washing their hands with Breath of God or the like, you’d be okay. On the other hand, the scent of Breath of God may help keep others at a reverent distance. (LOL!)

I am glad you are enjoying your Lush goodies! What a day! I love my electric kettle and have a beautiful glass one from OXO. It was expensive but it cleans up beautifully and the handle and lid configuration is perfect. I have burned myself on the escaping steam on smaller and less expensive models, it has an automatic shutoff. I have forgotten kettles on the stove, no matter how noisy, so safer and better for the easily distracted.

Thank you! And thanks for your suggestion about an electric kettle with an automatic shutoff. 🙂 That sounds like it would be the safest thing for me. Like, in case I got distracted by a shiny object and wandered out of the kitchen. (Who, me?) I can still hear from an adjacent room whether water is boiling in a pot on the stovetop, if I’m concentrating on listening for the sound, but that’s an “if.” I’ll keep the idea about an electric kettle in mind. 🙂

I’m sorry you’re not feeling well, I hope that improves soon. My SOTD is vintage Dioressence — love it! I have a mini splash bottle that I use sparingly. For the CP, I’ll likely wear one of the few Mugler scents I have, Angel Muse. It’s not a big fave, but I don’t dislike it.

I love vintage Dioressence and was the extremely lucky recipient of either a freebie or a swap very much in my favor, can’t remember exactly. If you find you are getting low, just let me know and I’ll send you a decant. It’s potent stuff, so I only need a couple sprays per wearing.

Late post as per usual, after a 13 hour day. ?

Spent most of yesterday in the delightful remains of Neroli Outrenoir (courtesy of a generous NSTer) which I’d slept in. Surprising lasting power!

Then, I made a fatal mistake. I decided to do some sampling in the evening. (An activity I am questioning in the wake of Kevin’s recent post!) I decided to spray a recently-acquired sample on back of hand. I don’t even remember WHY I got this sample. That seductive list of notes that ends up being oh-so-deceptive? (If only Kevin had posted sooner!) Then—unthinkingly—I rub the back of my hand on my neck.

Well, Dear Reader, I think you know where this is heading: tenacious, “I won’t let you forget what a fool you’ve been “ scrubber.

I was still catching whiffs of the horribleness this morning.

Then I sprayed more Neroli Outrenoir.
