Maison Margiela Matcha Meditation ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 21 January 2021 13 Comments

Maison Margiela has launched Matcha Meditation (Tokyo, 2008), a new unisex fragrance joining the Replica series.*

Matcha Meditation was developed by perfumer Maurice Roucel, who was inspired by the soothing aspect of the matcha tea ceremony. The notes include bergamot, mandarin, green tea and matcha accords, orange blossom, jasmine, moss, white chocolate and cedar.

Maison Margiela Matcha Meditation is available in 10, 30 and 100 ml Eau de Toilette. You can find the two larger sizes at Selfridges now.

* Matcha Meditation probably replaces 2014's Tea Escape, which was also designated "Tokyo, 2008".

Well, when we here in Scotland are allowed to travel more than 5 steps from our own homes, & I can go to Glasgow, I will pop into Frasers department store to see if they have this – the notes sound interesting, though I’m not sure about the inclusion of ‘white chocolate’. I am a bit of an MM fan, & always regretted not buying his original fragrance when it was launched, as it was something a bit different – & I am still (yes still!) working on finishing my Promenade in the Gardens bottle, as my fragrance wearing has been heavily negatively impacted by our assorted lockdown rules. Apologies to anyone who reads this – mini rant over!

Are you not allowed to wear fragrance during lockdown? If so, I’m so sorry!

Sorry, didn’t mean to mislead you – fragrance wearing must be one of the few things that hasn’t been forbidden (!) – I meant that not leaving the house for anything other than ‘essential grocery shopping’ means I haven’t been using fragrance much at all in the last almost year. I would have greatly appreciated your sympathy had it been on the “people can’t do this list” though!

So interesting Carolyn — I think I wear more fragrance since I don’t have to worry about anybody smelling it but me! We are all so different.

Nice to hear your thoughts, Robin. Because of where I live, & handcarry luggage flying regulations when I travel within Europe, my ‘try then possibly buy’ options are very limited, so I haven’t been using perfume on a daily basis during lockdown as I would begrudge running down my existing supplies! However, despite rules to the contrary, I am visiting my best friend this evening for dinner & copious red wine consumption, so will definitely apply something before I go out. I am also aware that ‘strong’ fragrances are frowned upon in certain environments in the US (this hasn’t ‘crossed the pond’ to the UK to any great extent) so I completely appreciate that if people have a favourite that is frowned upon, they would use it at home! My dear friend Kathy in Oak Ridge North, Texas, told me years ago when she was a big Giorgio fan that it was ‘discouraged’ in her workplace, so she had to find something deemed ‘less offensive’.

Ha, whereas I will not use up what I have during my lifetime…so that makes sense!

Hope you have a wonderful time with your friend tonight.

I was interested until I saw white chocolate. Why does everything have to be so sweet anymore? I still miss the L’Occitane original green tea perfume. The reformation ruined it.

If this smells anything like Tea Escape, it will be a lightly sweetened green tea with milk. Tea Escape reminded me of Green Tea-flavored Pocky the first time I smelled it.

I’m eager to try this since I liked Tea Escape quite a bit and was sad when they discontinued it. I still have a travel spray of it.

Replica discontinued a few of the scents I did like, and I don’t much care for most of their new releases, so it should be interesting to see how this one is!
