Thursday scent of the day 1/14

Posted by Robin on 14 January 2021 291 Comments

It's Almost-Friday, World Logic Day and Ratification Day. Birthdays: Nina Ricci, John Dos Passos, Clarence Carter, Julian Bond, T Bone Burnett. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Balenciaga Paris, which strikes me as a reasonable match with Ultimate Gray.

Reminder: on 1/15, wear a fragrance to match Ultimate Gray and/or Illuminating, Pantone's colors of the year for 2021.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Puppy and Kitten Market Shopper ("Front puppy and kitten print recalling cyber cute-culture") in soft calfskin is $2250 at Balenciaga, if you can still find one (it is sold out online).

    Good morning Y’all!

Doing the cozy snuggly tonka bean thing in Yves Rocher So Elixir. I need to wear this much more often! I’m working my way thru a box of forgotten samples that I dug out of my closet. It’s like a treasure chest in there! 🙂

I’m in Pomegranate Noir from a sample. I have very little experience with Jo Malone, except for some samples that I received through a freebiemeet. I like this one enough that I think I would like to try a decant.

I loved and wore Pom Noir by JM for years. It’s a lovely winter fragrance. I consider it a transparent, more wearable incense/patchouli/pom scent than most.

If you love Pomegranate in a scent, Remedy NorthWest has a fantastic Pomegranate Noir oil, and they scent body products like shower gel, soap, and body spray.
It may be a scent that is being discontinued from the lineup, and it’s 50% off.
      I have the A, D, & E body cream, it’s fantastic.

    JM Basil Neroli
After sampling the 4 I had, I like this one the best. But I still need to try orange blossom and the others mentioned.

I actually love Basil & Neroli. I bought a 30ml bottle a few years ago. It’s one of those perfumes that inexplicably makes me happy when I wear it. I’ll take that anytime I can find it!

My neighbor gave me the last few ml sprays of her bottle that’s how I ended up with this one. You are right, its does invoke a feeling of happiness. I feel like the lasting power is good for cologne. What do you think?

I agree. The lasting power of B&N is surprisingly good. It definitely helped in my decision to buy a bottle.

Ran out of nested comments – I just wear it on its own. I’m not really into layering perfumes.

What other rose scents do you like? I’m looking for something similar for a friend along the same lines of Jo Malone, light, fresh, dewy, stemmy rose scent.
I gifted her with Roger & Gallet’s Rose soaps, she loves those also.

I am a big fan of the Perfumer’s Workshop Tea Rose, even though perfumistas don’t wear it much. I also like Pacifica Persian Rose, Ormonde Jayne Ta’if, Les Parfums de Rosine Un Zest de Rose, Hermes Rose Ikebana.

My problem with Tea Rose is how BEEG it is. There’s no dose that feels “light!”

I agree with OJ Ta’if, and several of the Rosine scents might be a good fit, although I don’t own any of them. I sampled A LOT of them early on, and they all have that lighter, sweeter version of rose at the heart of them.

On me one spray of Tea Rose on my neck is enough. I really love it! I agree that Rosine has many great rose perfumes. La Rose de Rosine is also a light beautiful scent. I have owned few decants and they were all very enjoyable!

My favourite despite it being mainstream and low cost is the original Paul Smith Rose. It’s more vibrant than Lancolm’s Mille et une and less prim (and dated) than tea rose. I like JM’s Red Rose but the Paul Smith is actually more refreshing and uplifting due – I think – to the green tea. I bought it near the beginning of my perfume journey and bought a 30ml as I was sure I would grow out of it. Anyway – it’s one of the very few cases in which I regret not buying a big bottle. (I mean it’s inexpensive – I’m just resistant to re-buying ?)

Seconding the Pacifica Persian Rose. Valentino used to make a rose perfume called Rockin’ Rose, which was not rock and roll at all (maybe Top 40, though) but a dewy, fresh rose that was rather pretty.

I like and own Hiram Green Lustre. It’s a bright tea rose but not too much and has also frankincense that is subtle but noticeable. I also have that problem where a green rose can be too screechy and rub me the wrong way- not with this one.

Hi honey! ?‍♀️ Ooh, congrats on the adorable owl!

Green Spell elicited a spontaneous delighted smile from me on first whiff – always a good sign! It’s very green, sharp and bracing but not too bitter. The tomato leaf, galbanum, and violet leaf are the dominant notes on me. Could be fbw for me, but I will have to employ the hajusuuri method to fully assess – the longevity and development petered out pretty quickly after my dinky three sample spritzes.
Did you buy a LARGE sample?

2250 for a bag?!?omg, who buys these things? Lol
LL Santal 33 on one wrist and Maison Louis Marie no. 04 Bois de Balincourt on the other. These get a lot of comparisons and I can see why. They are very similar. The MLM is “quieter” than the LL, but I get more floral undertones from the LL. I’ve been on a sandalwood kick lately. My girls downvoted the LL, but I don’t care, I like it anyway.
In other news, my parents made it to sunny Florida yesterday. Yay! I’m always happy when they (meaning my 76 year old dad who does all the driving) are off the road. They are on the list to get their vaccines there. Double yay!?

I love LL Santa 33, and Rose 31. I’d say those are my top two from the line. And they are fantastic in perfume oil form.
LL Iris 39 is also wonderful, but one has to love patchouli scents.

Interesting that it has patchouli, I had no idea. I’ve tried about half of the line but not Iris yet…eventually I would like to try them all. I do like patchouli in some scents, coromandel is a love, but I didn’t really care for diptyque tempo. So I guess it’s a hit or miss note for me.
LL Labdanum is my favorite of the line so far.

Hello all! Happy almost Friday. 🙂 My SOTD is Fleurs de Rocaille by Caron. If ever a perfume has a yellow vibe going on, it’s this one. Not my go-to scent but it’s nice for warmer days.

It’s going to be a sunny day in SF – I’m headed out for a walk in a few. I’m going to loosen up my back – I’m a tiny bit tender from yesterday’s yoga workout. You can find it here:

It sounds important enough that your provider should be able to advocate for you. Having done some research on this subject, the 2 most important types of people to dispute a non-coverage is a patient’s family member / trusted friend (both must have power of attorney) (or yourself in this case) and a medical professional. Good luck with the insurance company which, I am assuming, is for profit.

If your physician considers this procedure to be necessary/important they can submit what is called a prior authorization to the insurance company explaining the reasons for which they would like to have the test done. Sometimes it comes down to your MD discussing the case directly with another physician who works for the insurance company (a peer to peer review). It may take some time but if the request is justified it usually gets approved.

Feeling low today. The loudest voices in our school district are back to blaming teachers for this semi-virtual school year. I know I should be able to dismiss such silliness, but it’s demoralizing when I think most people, in all parts of the educational exchange, are trying their best.

I’m wearing Lost Cherry from a sample I dismissed awhile ago, and while it started out good, I think I still don’t like the dry down. Maybe I’m not a big almond note fan?

My fiance and I have occasional date nights during quarantine that involve dressing up! We throw two-person parties with elaborate decorations and fancy food, or else pretend our dining table is a bar (with the lights turned low and a printed-out menu), or pretend we’re going to a doughnut factory for a VIP tour. Anyway, my point is, you can totally make up reasons to be dressed up! And if you don’t want your outfits to go to waste, be sure to set up a photo booth so you can admire yourselves later 🙂

Courtesy of Pixel, I’m in Muresque by DSH and am loving it. Very similar to the vibe I get from Wild Roses–even though they do not smell the same. It is probably the sweet patchouli. I’m not sure I am getting much sillage, particularly given my heavy-handed application. I have a small bit of Wild Roses extrait and it functions like a typical extrait–steady warm sillage. This does not (at least as much as anyone can tell the sillage they are blasting into the universe), but it is so pretty!

My sick colleague (COVID–ugh!) is doing better. She sounds dreadful, but like someone battling a bad case of the flu–no worse. My husband scared the bijeesus out of me with stats from hospitals that are seeing really really sick people in their 20s and 30s, believed to be because of the high viral loads they’ve been exposed to. Anyway, I am definitely perkier knowing she is doing okay.

If you get it in a spray bottle (which I’ve seen at CVS and the like for scrapes), just spray it on the Eau de Pew and let it sit for 10 or 15 minutes. Then rinse it off with plain water. Hopefully that takes care of the Big Stink.

I’ve definitely been on a spring floral kick! It makes it seem like it’s just around the corner. You smell great even if your porch doesn’t!

When Mr. Teebear and I lived on the West Coast we were “saved” from the neighborhood skunk several times only because a momma raccoon used to sneak into the upstairs neighbors’ floor to steal their cat food – so she was QUITE territorial about our house!

I think this went on for quite some time before there were problems but one night we heard noises on the back stairs. After the first time we spotted Mama AND her four adorable thieving kits, we did promptly let the neighbors know that their kitty Panda had *not* suddenly gotten a lot hungrier. That answered a lot of questions they had!

But the raccoon family still liked to hang around, just in case someone forgot to block the cat flap with a large potted plant at night ?

I didn’t in that time frame but I can tell you that, were I to buy a mac laptop again, I would get one with a more pronounced keyboard. I got the macbook (app. 3-5 years ago) which is super sleek but the shallow keyboard is not great if you type a lot, in my opinion. I since ruined the macbook (don’t reach for your tea without looking!) and I’m on a work laptop, which is a Dell, and not nearly as sleek, but a much better keyboard.

Hi Hajusuuri, I got a new MacBook Pro through work in the late fall. So far, so good. I should be using an external monitor to avoid the computer hunch, but that is on me, since I do have one and just haven’t pulled it out and set it up. But it works very smoothly, which was not the case with the Air I had before this. And now the Pros are almost as light, but with more plug ins and a better keyboard.

I currently have a Mac Book Air and it sounds like I may need to upgrade. One thing that did not have a bearing on my choice then was weight since I was not planning on traveling with it. That said, the fact that the Pro has a better keyboard and is also now lighter than it used to be are points in its favor.

Fourreau Noir. Feels like a lavender tinged gray to me and fits the grey weather too.
Had to use public transport today, thankfully it was relatively uncrowded, but another 2 hours of mask wearing plus at work is not nice.
Bought some yarn to knit socks for my friend, who has liver metastases. Hugs for her feet!

It is cold, but the sun is shining! I look forward to getting out there for my walk today. I wish I could sneak out early and get it in the middle of the day, but my classes are too close together for that. At least now it’s not dusk when I can leave at 4pm anymore.

Another day and yet another Amouage: Fate this time. I seem to have a lot of Amouage samples and I want to sort them out and see which ones can stay and which ones will have to go. Fate is definitely leaving. It is just too much. And I love Guerlains but this is so dense and sweet and just not me.

Thanks for all the kind words yesterday! NST’ers are the best.

    Thursday!

    1) SOTD: TF Noir pour femme- tiny spritzs.

    2) Sunshine today. Did some quick pricing at HD yesterday- cedar pickets are 40% HIGHER than what is usually at this time of year- about what I expected. Will be doing a quick bike ride to one of wood producers after work to check out any pickets that they may have.

Have you considered Trex? When it’s time to re-build my deck, that is what I am planning on using. I have not priced out yet though so it could be a pipe dream. My deck is small.

        I have!
Trex is expensive, and TBH, it’s not popular here, even in high end homes. Every one wants cedar or teak, and installation is specialized here, where with cedar or teak any idiot (me) can pick up the materials and build a deck or fence.

        *cries in credit card*

On a positive side, I knew that fence needed to be replaced- now this forces things. I was also thinking of building a small deck, so I will get this done all at once. But I need a good spate of dry weather, all the materials and 50 hours in the day.

Good luck!! Our last cedar fence was probably 20+ years old, so there’s that — they do last if you keep them painted or otherwise treated.

And adding…we bought the pickets, the posts, and the pre-cut boards for the sections that are high privacy fencing, and my son and husband assembled it and installed it. Saved a lot of money over our original estimate for having it done by others.

The downside is that my husband still hasn’t gotten around to re-building the gates (we kept the iron hardware from the old ones). Hopefully this spring!

          15 January 2021 at 5:03 pm

          Ah!

So this house was built in 2006, with the fencing put in at that time. It was not treated and the posts were put into the ground naked- no grounding with stones or cement. So when I get this done, it will be done properly. I will probably reuse the boards in some capacity.

I did the fencing on the other side of the townhouse, so I will replace this, then the back fencing and build a deck.

Our posts were also in the ground naked, but the posts were treated wood, and they lasted longer than the cedar pickets and boards. I actually don’t know what kind of wood the posts are.

But they are also relatively easy to replace, and not that expensive IIRC.

We do the cedar pickets with solid stain that looks just like opaque paint. The drawback is that you have to do it again every few years, but I do like the look of a white picket fence.

I am continuing my sample testing with 2 items: BDK Gris Charnel and Nuit de Sable.

One of the reviewers on Fragrantica, where reviews are so widely divergent that I sometimes wonder if they’re talking about the same thing, says about Gris Charnel “…if you don’t get this perfume maybe you should train your nose a bit more”. LOL

I’m pretty sure that my nose needs a lot more training but I really don’t “get” it. To me it smells like dozens of other sweet woody nondescript fragrances that you are likely to encounter at any department store.
Have you all tried it? Am I missing something here?

Moving on to Nuit de Sable. Again, I feel like I’ve smelled this many a time in one of the oud/wood/rose concoctions on the market. To quote Persolaise, “ the sort of thing that’s been pumped through the ventilation system at Harrods for at least the last two decades”. His observation does not refer to Nuit de Sable.
I don’t think it’s bad (although I had to scrub it) but I am kind of disappointed in this repetitiveness. Any other opinions on this one?

It is entirely possible that after smelling so many perfumes (and I’m sure I haven’t even come close to smelling as many as some of you here have) it takes a lot to impress.

I think this is mostly a men in their 20s thing. I am in my 20s myself but if I were doing bragging posts about my new MFK or something I’d choose my vanity and not my car. Weird trend.

Broke my Lost Cherry streak to try out a sample of Parfums DelRae Coup de Foudre and fell in love at first sniff (pun fully intended; I’m not above the lowest form of humor). It’s a lovely rose scent on me; a nice dose of citrus and flowers round out the rose. I have enough gorgeous roses that I probably won’t buy this, but I would be quite pleased if a bottle magically appeared in my collection.

I’ve done such a bad job with the CP this week. Maybe I’ll pull out Ostara tomorrow. Today’s high here is going to be sunny and 70! Ostara is nearly overdue 🙂

Gorgeous sunny day here, wearing BDK Tabac Rose. It starts off very loud, but dries down nicely.

Have you tried Tubereuse Imperiale Cazaubon? That is one of the three BDK samples recently ordered from Luckyscent and the one I have not yet smelled. The other two did not wow me, as I may have mentioned above ?

Geisha Noire for no reason other than my hubs is coming home tonight and he likes this one. He’s been out of town working so I will be happy to see him, although I have enjoyed cooking whatever I like with no consideration if he likes it or not and watching girly shows LOL!

I made a sausage and kale soup, some zucchini and carrot fritters, a salmon Niçoise salad. Oh and a plantain hash. So good!

I’ve been cooking for myself and Mr. Teebear since the pandemic started – he’s able to work from home unlike me, so it’s a fair division of labor – but I envy you your stretch of cooking for just your own tastes! Hope the reunion is just as nice.

A little late today! In addition to all the other tasks, today I decided to mop the front entryway. Based on what I saw, I might have to do that more often. (I didn’t think it was THAT dirty!)

RIP Siegfried Fischbacher (of Siegfried & Roy fame) and Joanne Rogers.

SOTD = back in Cuir de Lancome again today. I saw that there was a clue about Lancome last night on Jeopardy, much to my amusement.

Let’s not overdo it on the house cleaning front. If it makes you feel better, I’m rolling with multiple cobwebs on all the furniture feet…..

It was a case of 1) I can see it, and 2) it’s easy to do. My entryway is on the small side.

I do have cat-fur tumbleweeds drifting under my couch. It’s impossible to keep up with those! ?

I have two Yeti cats and feel your pain on that one. Those little fur drifts just literally float away from the broom….

Smelling great, Jalapeno! But I agree with Lisa D, you don’t want to overdo the cleaning; you may end up re-injuring your back!

Thanks Gail! I think part of my back issue was stress. So I am working on keeping that to a low simmer whenever possible. Easier said than done, yeah.

My spot vacuum cleaner (for the entry level / downstairs) has been out of power for over a week. I suppose I need to get up and plug it in but first, I have to clean out the dirt trap. Oy!

I’m late again today. Time seems to fly away on me and I’ve had some work projects. Our weather was gorgeous today and mild and I had a nice walk. I wore Perris Monte Carlo Ylang Ylang Nosy Be because that note is definitely yellow to me and I love this version of it.

I am glad you mentioned this house. I am hearing wonderful things about Mimosa Tanneron, created by Jean-Claude Ellena and it appears that he is the in house perfumer for Perris Monte Carlo. I bet you smell heavenly.

After a bit more research, Jean-Claude did not do them all. It looks like Indigo Perfumery stocks them and you can order samples. Indigo offers great customer service and samples from brands that are difficult to come by on our side of the pond. It was the first store in the U.S. to stock Papillon. I am not affiliated in anyway but as a happy customer. The other nice thing about Perris Monte Carlo is the lack of hyperbole in the company provided descriptions, simply the inspiration and the notes.
